What I like about your videos is that your narration is relaxed and calming. It really is in the spirit of surfing that most of us should have. Fun without dangerous impulsivity. No aggression or ego. Thoughtful experimentation to better understand your boards and conditions so that you can have even more fun. Totally opposite to the testosterone driven, impulsive, thrill seeking and mindless aggression that many surfers have toward their sport and to each other. It's fully possible to have a fantastic day surfing on average waves without dropping 20 ft, holding your breath for 2 mins under white water, scraping reefs and throwing punches. If more surfers had your attitude then surfing would be a lot more fun for a lot more surfers. Thanks for your videos. I really enjoy them.
DoctorShrink Thanks so much! I really appreciate your comments and agree completely. My super extra top secret plan is to bring more joy, calm, and peace to surfing :)
I'm 58. I don't think the trend toward aggro in the surf will fade any time soon. I think it's getting worse. I ride a SUP and stay out wide out of the way, picking up waves no short board rider would want but that still give me heaps of fun.
Wow, I really enjoyed this. Just came upon it. As a relatively new paddle surfer I can appreciate the views and vibe. Great narration, music and footy! Will be checkin' out more of your stuff!
Great video. Highly recommend 808 as well. I surf this spot when I take the family in the summer as Launiupoko tends to get too crowded. Tried foiling for the first time in July of this year between Pua and Launiupoko and spent most of the time in the water.
Nice shots man, the cove, launiupoko, all fun spots, I miss maui, great place to live and surf. props to 808 sup rentals, always use them when I am back on the island visiting friends.
Good narration, seemed zen-like. Surfed with you once (38th) and didn't realize what you were doing with the cam, now I see. Keep it up bro, good stuff.
Your voice is so calming, and so is the music, and of course imagery. I was looking at norcal surfing vids and had to click on your channel after watching your fort point video because it was so good.
Dude, I found your channel and video by accident but damn what an awesome video. I love the narration and I dig that you let the video go on for some time and not just "the best of" type shots. Props to you man. Subbed!
Really enjoying your videos I’m heading back to Puerto Rico next month. Definitely will be looking for a board to sup surf. Can you recommend a size for knee to chest high. Or what to look for. Thanks
FincaDelSol PR Thanks. I recommend finding a local who's willing to share their knowledge of boards and spots. There always seems to be someone who has a lifetime of experience and who would love to pass on their life's work to a person who really appreciates them. If not this sounds like an invitation to becoming the wisdom keeper :)
Great video man - heading back in July and you have me totally pumped about getting out there on the SUP and attempting the waves again. As a Calgary guy I don't get a lot of opportunity, but love it when I do. Something awesome about your video and the vibe you set that really sums up how awesome it is out there.
Great video as always. Been watching your videos for about a year now and have learned so much about SUP surfing and love the stoke and calmness of all your videos. Question; could you show a photo or something that reveals your GoPro stick? I love that angle bc its up in the air instead of being on the bottom of the board. Thanks any help appreciated.
after browsing in your channel and looking some tutorials todau here in israel was a great day for surfing and i got my few first real waves on my sup! had a great day met a lot of other surfers and really had a lot of fun and felt amazing and with that come the quastion: what tips do you have to balance on the board? does it come with time or there are some drills to do to make it easier? any way i had a great day and some of it was because of you so thanks! @clayisland
Hi and Thanks and Great to hear your stoke! I struggled with a 29" board and then went wider to 32" and that gave me the balance I needed. I think the best practice is to go paddle, time on the water helps with everything.
Hi again. Could you compare the Flight Hawaii Triton board you rode in this video to your Stretch and Simsup boards? I’m trying to get my bearings on what style of board I want... Thanks in advance! Btw, that 1000-yard foil ride was unreal! Are you sure you weren’t riding one of those motorized boards?! 😄
@@TurboE30M3 hi, it's been a while. Stretch made me a stinger tail SUP before I got into foiling and that's the best board I've ever ridden. I remember triton having pulled in tail so turned well from the back and also a bit tippy back there. Simsup is a fast down the line no cutback kinda board.
Clay how do you like transitioning into surfing stance from a neutral stance vs a staggered stance? I haven't had much luck catching waves in a neutral "paddle" stance unless they are very small, I have found that I have to be in a staggered semi surf stance with anything over a couple of feet or I will usually eat it because I can't transition fast enough. the waves here on the gulf of mexico are mainly wind driven chop and dump very fast so you don't get much time to get into position before they break.
Hi, on bigger boards I feel freer to put my feet wherever, on smaller boards staggered stance seems more necessary. Moving both feet at the same time (jumping) or keeping my paddle in the water while moving my feet helps also.
make sense. I think a lot has to do with the quality of the surf ie how steep and fast they break. just my opinion. I can see how the larger more stable boards would give you more time to move around with less wobble. Now if we would get some decent waves here...great vids... happy surfing
I hear you and I agree. Have you tried different shapes? I find my winter board doesn't work in smaller faster dumpier waves. My simmons shape works much better, as it takes off down the line and requires less footwork to make the sections. Wishing us both great waves!
I used to Windsurf Maui (Spreks and some Hookipa), but didn't really SUP much in those days. Took my SUP there last time. got to do S-Turns over near Lahaina. But . . . Where are these spots? Are these northshore? Dying to know for next time that I got over there. Especially that place with lots of other SUP guys - being friendly! I used to surf Shark Pit on the south side of Lahaina. but I don't think that they would be friendly to SUPs out there.
Hi, no I have not, I'll look into that, thanks! It would be helpful to know which dark scenes you are referring to? Then I can try similar lighting with flat style.
Hi, I am uncomfortable naming surf spots. It has been my experience that most folks in Maui will be happy to tell where it is when on the island. Thanks for watching.

Very enjoyable to watch, love your channel. Recently took up SUP surfing and love how it demands you move your feet.
Clay, I love how relaxed your music and narration is. It's a great feel and strangely compelling to watch.
Algarve SUP Thanks!

Your comment should be posted on ALL surfing videos. Im 60 now and the nasty vibe is full on in some spots. Perhaps it's a trend and will fade.

BumHaven Thanks. Yeah foiling is improving slowly
Great video and it’s equally great to listen to your calming voice describing the experience

Wonderful. I'm 6'6" 200lbs.

Hard board. I've sup surfed an inflatable in small waves, riding waves is fun on any craft
Awesome. You mind saying the specs of the board? Thanks.
Thanks! Yes I was riding a production Bill Foote 10'x32", I think it is called a Triton.
What set up do you use for your camera arm? love your videos :)
Thanks, camera mount: clayisland.com/building-with-bamboo/
Love the bamboo arm. Thank you for the instructions. Checking out the website now. Legend :)
Cool video! What kind of gopro mount are you using on the board? I've never seen that angle before!
Thanks! I make my own mounts:

Hello, I'm watching from Japan.
I recently started SUP surfing, but I'm struggling.
I will refer to it.
I relate to this a lot
sweet.
nice vid . nice vibe
Thanks Austen
Nice, vid. What size board is this?
antoine leduc Hi, it's a 10x32 Bill Foote Triton

I know this west side towards lahaina, but where is it specifically?
Hi Gary, I'm uncomfortable naming spots. I suggest asking a local or local surf shop.
on which mount you put the go pro ?
Gal Spinath Hi, on my custom handmade mount, there is a link in the video description. Thanks.
great video
What is that (gopro?) mount that u r using?
Thanks! The GoPro mount is a custom hand made pole I have been working on. A link is in the video description.
Good video man. They’re getting better. I like the camera angle, did you rig that up yourself?
have you tried flat picture style? sometimes picture looks dark

Who did the great music track ?
David Kantey Hi and thanks for watching. Vir McCoy is the musician, link is in the video description.
What broad used in this video?
very enjoyable :-)
Hi buddy, how big this stand up.Hugs
Hi, in this video it's a Foote 10' production board that I rented from 808.
@@clayisland very good my friend, you take very good. hugs
where is this surf spot in Maui?
Hi, I am uncomfortable naming surf spots. It has been my experience that most folks in Maui will be happy to tell where it is when on the island. Thanks for watching.
None of these are secret spots. At least part of this is south Maui. Kind of grainy with my bad connection so hard to tell for sure.
What is the size of your board? 8'.?
Hi it is a Foote 10'x32" in this video.
Nice!
I've just bought a 11', and hope to be good/easy to catch some waves! Greetings from Brazil!
Clay, I had the same board from 808 during our recent week in Maui. Fun lil board, and great surf location.
muito bom
Is that an inflatable?
nope
Olowalu?
