    Mondaine's watch Dial is ICONIC. It can be found in Art Museums in the US, London and Spain. In 2012 Apple was almost Sued by Mondaine, for using the Dial design without permission. A very underrated Brand...but certainly not a Fashion Brand Dave. Good content tho 👌🏽

    I'm Swiss. These are for the tourists and are sold in pretty much every souvenir shop but I've never seen it on a wrist ever here. The design is nice but when you see these watches daily in the train stations, you kind of want something else to look at on your own wrist.

      I bought the Mondaine “Giant” (white dial with black hands) years ago. It is readable across a room. So, when I was in Switzerland a few years ago I was one of those tourists who bought another one at the airport. This time it wasn’t the “Giant” but the dial was nearly as big with the dial being in black and the hands in white. It is also readable across the room. I just like the look of the watch. And, I’ve actually seen one on the wrist of a Swiss railroad conductor while riding on a Swiss train.

    I have two Mondaines: the sports version (with tritium) and the Stop2go. I would not call them a "fashion watch" or brand: because it has more design heritage. Also be aware that there are no other watches with this quartz movement: this is specific for them. I mean: can you name any other quartz movement that goes from 31st to 39th? So I think calling it a fashion brand is really, really selling them short!
    To me Mondaine is like a Bauhaus watch: you instantly recognize it. Also my Stop2go has a
    Unique quartz movement in the sense that it more sweeps than ticks and the 2 seconds pause at every whole minute!

      @Strideo1 3 года назад +2

      This is a pretty common gripe about quartz watches that's mostly a misconception. The alignment of the seconds hand with the indexes doesn't really tell you much about the quality of the timepiece. In fact quartz watches assembled by hand are more likely to have misaligned seconds hands than mass produced machine assembled watches.
      Even Omega's quartz watches are known to have seconds hands that don't precisely hit the indexes.

    Well Dave, as an update I took a risk on an eBay quartz model for sale at just under 45GBP. The photographs showed a watch in quite poor condition in need of some love. Anyway it turned out to be a mid size 35mm Evo 30300. It wasn't in very poor condition it just needed a clean, a polish and a battery. I did this and put on a new carbon fiber strap. Now it looks perfect except the mineral glass needs a polish to remove a scuff that isn't immediately obvious. I like that feeling when the ball is in the back of the net and you feel like you've scored the winner (except every vintage Favre Leuba I get is an own goal!). So that's the Mondaine checked off the list of wants.

  • @bobalouie2413
    @bobalouie2413 3 года назад +2

    Great video. Bought my Mondaine on sale since it is pricey. Keeps superb time and looks great with a black and red leather strap. Crown is a bit smooth, hard to grip; but, it's a simple, elegant and classic look with a second hand deliberately reminiscent of the red paddles Swiss rail conductors waved to signal train boarding and departure. Dial is very easy on my older eyes. One of my favorites. I did have to exchange it to get one where the second hand hit the markers precisely..
    (really bugs me when they don't align!).

    @billmurphy893 3 года назад +2

    Thanks for the review nice job! Have you seen the Stop2go? It's a lot more $ but has a lot more of a story.... Same look but the second hand sweeps around in 58 seconds and then stops at the 12 for 2 seconds while the hand advances one spot just like the Swiss rail clocks do when they sync up with the central clock ensuring all clocks are exactly in sync ever minute. Forgot about the lume on the underside of the hands which is trong enough to make out in the middle of the night!

    Interesting to get a peek inside but no-one will be crying out for a case back window.
    Iconic Bauhaus design. Perhaps familiarity breeds contempt. A bit overpriced, certainly, compared to Far East imports but it is made in Switzerland and worth it if you like minimalism as there's nothing else quite like it. Apple had to pay quite hefty compensation for their copywrite theft and quite rightly so. The Stop2Go gimmick is fun but I wouldn't pay a lot extra for that party piece. The quartz version isn't massively overpriced, compared with fashion brands, but the automatic is very expensive.

    40 days on the date complication? Why? I don't get it. Please explain, if you can.

    • @JusttheWatch
      @JusttheWatch  3 года назад +4

      It's a big date complication, which means that they have to use two wheels, one for each numeral. So there's one wheel with blank-3 on it and one with 0-9. So at the end of the month you have to cycle the second wheel back to 0 to reset it. Normal date complications by contrast have a single wheel that goes from 1-31.

    Like the watch, but the strap doesn't work for me.

    The RONDA movement is a bottom of the range, one jewel piece of Meh, so $20 worth. A significant proportion of the Mondaine range is glass not saphire and only a questinable 30m depth, which is basically splash proof. At least on the Giant and a few others they have lume on the back of the hands which is a nice touch. They should be considered a novelty dress watch only. Not worth the money, but nice on the wrist. The battery may outlast the movement, and the date is prone to being off-centre or just not working. Date needs adjustment every month. The Mondaine stop2go range are a different watch all together.

    I enjoyed that review Dave. I would say that it is fashionable rather than a fashion watch. I don't think that it's a fashion brand. However it does put seem to put style over substance in that its kind of simple and minimalistic so I think that you would be paying for that kind of exclusivity in design rather than the construction and whatever bells and whistles it has. I'd really like one but I don't think that I could justify that kind of price for me. I'd be expecting more. I did check out the Berny homage on AliExpress. It looks nice but lacks the lollipop second hand and for me that's the deal breaker in the negative sense and why I don't think that I will buy one. It's only 22 GBP for the quartz though. There is also less heft to the markers and hands. They seem slimmer somehow. It was nice to see the small child's face and the hymn book too. 👍⌚🙏

    I understand why people buy these but not a big fan of the aesthetics personally. That 'pizza pan' face just doesn't appeal to me although the legibility and general usability are definitely plus points. Considering the price and specs I'd pass on this and go with Seiko or Tissot.
    If I saw a Mondaine I liked at a really low price I might be tempted but then again the money could be put towards something better. Strangely enough that happened to me last summer when I passed on a 1/2 price Mondaine with a deckchair stripe fabric strap.
    Agree about the packaging though, the Tissot boxes for example are ridiculously OTT for an everyday watch.

    i can understand, why people like these watches, but for me, there just noting special and kinda boring. BUT, i think, the reason for this is, because i was grown up in switzerland and i saw this design everyday (multible times) and now, im living in germany and the german railwail clocks are literaly just a rip-off of the swiss railway clocks (even with the 1,5 second secondhandstop every minute), so if i want to see this design, i don't have to look down on my wrist, i have to look up on the trainstation, literaly every day, since i can think ;)

    They are fashion watches as the leather strap degrades very quickly. Also after a year of intermittent use the hands warped and got stuck on each other causing the watch to stop. For a Swiss Ronda movement, I am not impressed with them.

    I just sold my limited edition"Day date" from 2004 The second hand never hit the markers. I only buy Japanese Quartz if I have to. I found out that I did not want a station clock on my wrist anymore. Not very well made. More of a status watch from the nineties.

    Reviewer doesn't even know or care to just check the sponsored watch website to know the packaging for the Evo2 is a regular consumer set? 🤔🤭 Too many YT reviewers and influencers have become so casual and lazy about preparing key background information to package the video better. Ultimately we just get a sort of generalist overview and not an objective review... 'I'm not really sure...' doesn't cut it. Oh well. Whatever. How would this even make anyone think this is a brand worth exploring? 😬🤦🏻‍♂️
