How To Use Mindfulness For Depression

  • Mindfulness's attention to the here and now. It's being fully present in the moment. You are experiencing the present moment and non-judgmental way. The brain model of depression is hypo-connectivity between the neurons in certain parts of the brain that regulate and process your emotions and a hyper connectivity in the default mode network. In this video I discussed what the default mode network is and how it relates to depression. I also discuss how mindfulness changes these connectivity patterns.
Here are the specific structures of that brain that make up the default mode network. The posterior cingulate cortex (PCC; areas 23/31), the precuneus, and the medial frontal cortex (MFC, including areas 24/10-m/32), as well as bilateral inferior parietal and posterior temporal areas around the temporoparietal junction area.

I have been on and off medication for depression and anxiety for several years; however, when I sew, quilt, paint, and draw, I think I go into this mindful state, especially sewing. Every stitch is a prayer for my own health and wellness as well as others I love. Same thing when I walk, hike, bike, and ski.🙋🏼‍♀️

As part of my treatment for severe depression, I am in the process of teaching myself how to practise mindfulness and just being positive no matter what; and I honestly feel so much better already. Haven't had a really bad depressive day for so long and I am able to finally sleep and even socialize! My psychotherapist feels I may not even need antidepressants after all because my progress is amazing so far.

And it’s the same whatever you do. Whatever you do, focus on the textures, sensations, and put all your attention on it. Whenever someone says something, focus on it if you’re life depends on it.” Man was that helpful. Thank you Dr Marks. Really appreciate the science behind how our mind works. My former therapist gave me an audio mindfulness body awareness and the first and only time I used it, I became hyper- aware of all the emotional distress I was holding in my body. It was like focusing on different parts of my body brought different painful memories to the surface. Even remembering it brings me close to tears. In that incident I started crying, and then sobbing, and I had to stop. Since then I have been diagnosed with PTSD due to early childhood trauma as well as trauma in my late twenties/early thirties.

I am so happy that you incorporate mindfulness into your practice. And I am so grateful that you did this video. What many do not understand, is that once you become mindful of your thoughts, you are able to better handle the many things life WILL throw at you...including the kitchen sink. I have went beyond MBSR and now pass the education and "insight" needed to maintain my mindfulness to my children. The great thing about mindfulness is you can become a "positive and uplifting" virus that infects everyone around you in a good way, rather than being a "negative and toxic" virus that can make your surroundings and those around you darker. Some people who were in very challenging conditions and situations that most of us could not imagine were able to maintain their mindfulness - where they do not dwell on the past or the future. They were able to keep their mind from the feeling of hopelessness and despair...even though they were surrounded by it . We need more of you! Thanks again for your work!

Thank you for sharing the science behind mindfulness!😁 I started practicing it 3 years ago from my counselor (who also studies Buddhism). I noticed within a week the anxiety went down and over few months my negative thoughts slowed enough for me to manage life better. The next thing I came across in applying mindfulness is after I went to a drum circle at my church I noticed for first time since I was diagnosed with depression that I had moments my mind was as calm as a lake in early morning. I felt so much relief😁...I bought some frame drums and play along with drumming meditation videos.

I take medications at a greater interval if I mediate or exercise or even practicing on my hobbies like watercolouring, reading, classical dancing or playing the piano. Distraction from the negativities in life is very important, and coming back to it with a fresh perspective later when you are positive. BUT that is soooo hard to do and it engulfs you and only medication at times can give you the boost you need because you have gone too far into the dark ruminating hole of negativity and fear. Thank you for these videos! I actually refuse medications due to the side effects. I’ve had many doctors try to keep me on medications when they were causing terrible and unbearable side effects. I now manage my depression and anxiety using more alternative methods, for me the most beneficial thing has been certain amino acids. However they are not always enough on their own, so I then use mindfulness techniques combined with the amino acids. It drives me crazy that so many doctors feel patients must remain on prescription medications for life and they don’t even teach about alternative treatments at all. I love your approach and how you teach people about both medication and alternative treatments. I also love your approach of not keeping all patients on medication for the rest of their life and instead tapering them off after a year or so to see if they still need them.

@@avaprod.8622 there are multiple I use. The main I use for depression is 1000 mg of L-tryptophan. For anxiety, I use L-theanine. Though please be careful and use caution when using, L-tryptophan and 5-htp are two amino acids that cross the blood brain barrier and should NEVER be used in combination with SSRI’s because it can cause serotonin syndrome. As far as I’m aware L-theanine does not cross the blood brain barrier. Though I am not a medical professional so please do your own research and exercise caution when using. I hope this information helps.

Good information. From my observations, mindfulness coupled with EMDR allows for the restructuring of past negative thoughts/experiences to be viewed as important parts in making you a better person today. Instead of ruminating on negative events, one can view them as important events that give experience and insight to help them improve.

Great point Dennis. That's actually at the heart of mindfulness. It’s about acceptance of the events versus trying to forget about them. Thanks for your comment!

My psychologist conducts mindfulness workshops in Asiri hospital. I have followed the course of workshops and it has been very helpful specially against ruminative thoughts and even intrusive-thoughts. Mindfulness is not something you do once and get fixed, but a lifestyle change and a commitment to it.

This is fascinating to me, as I just started practicing mindfulness about 8 months ago. Being mindful does help with the intrusive thoughts. I am also on a good med combo now and am stable.
I'm wondering how mindfulness would or would not help with bipolar disorder.
Thank you for a great video. I look forward to them each week.

Hi Dana. The research I've seen only covers unipolar depression and not bipolar depression. But it may work the same. We're still left with whether or not it helps with mania or mood stabilization. Thanks for continuing to watch!

Talking about the intrusive thoughts, do you observe the thoughts when they come or simply try to push them away and observe your breath?

Many years ago, a coworker made a casual comment -"All of life is habit." I immediately realized that she was talking not just smoking, drinking, etc., but the ultimate habit - our thoughts.

I’ve recently found a weekly Vinyasa Yoga class. I love how the yoga teacher started her recent class with a guided awareness meditation based on the 3 As : Approach, attitude, awareness... I’me determined to keep up the class as I could feel myself getting better during my postures. Having the right approach and attitude and awareness enabled me to hold my balance and focus on the postures properly, correctly and confidently.
