Installing a 6.4 SRT Hemi in my Jeep Wrangler!

Its time to install the 6.4 SRT engine into my Jeep Wrangler!!
I have a 2010 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon that ive owned for multiple years, it came with the 3.8L engine. The engine has held up well over time, however once i added one ton axles and 40s.... I was on the quest for more power. And 485Hp should sure solve that!
In the first video of the Jeep Hemi swap video series we took a look at what engines/trans and years to pick from. I am using the 6.4L (392) LX (car based) hemi, and pairing it with a 8HP70 8 speed transmission from a dodge 1500.
Almost everything i am doing in this series will be the same as a 5.7 VVT Hemi swap as well. The 5.7 is cheaper, and easier to find used. It still puts out a ton of power, and you could always throw a cam in it to bump up the HP.
Jeep Wranglers are a lot of fun with V8 swaps! But paying a shop is not.... This swap will not be cheap, however we can save thousands by doing this at home (and at your own pace and budget).
The LS swap is another option, however to retain all factory Jeep controls it can be just as expensive as a 5.7 swap, and requires the use of a lot of Canbus adapters which can fail over time.
Its time to remove the old Jeep engine and start up the modifications needed to fit this big Hemi in the Wrangler! We have to remove the factory battery tray, move the steering mount in the firewall over, remove the old power steering reservoir, and well... Thats about it!
The 8HP70 (8 speed) is a game changer! A hemi with a 5 speed is already great, but 3 extra gears makes it even better! This is something i would highly recommend to anyone that had a 3.8. If you currently have the 3.6 with auto trans, you can always reuse your NAG1 trans with a new bellhousing and Torque convertor- the choice is yours!
I am using parts from Jeep Speed Shop. They are a small company in CA, specializing in hemi swaps. Todd, the owner is very knowledgeable of these swaps, and makes really great parts.
They can be hard to get a hold of... They operate on only a few employees so be patient if you leave him a message or text.
Jeep speed shop (JSS) has a few build of material lists (BOM) on the website if you are wondering what all parts you need. I will include the link below.
    Parts:
Engine Leveler (You will need one): amzn.to/3qjmKMh
Engine Hoist: 2 ton from harbor freight
    3/4x16 Tap: amzn.to/3plFpWB
    Exhaust Manifold Right: amzn.to/2N874x0
    Exhaust Manifold Left: amzn.to/3djOwEG
    Steering Relocation: jeepspeedshop....

Transmission Structural support (Get bolts if needed): www.moparparts...
    Oil Filter Relocation: www.moparautop...
Rear Sump Oil pan for 6.4: www.mymoparpar...
    Transmission Cooler Lines: 68291875ab
Or make your own cooler lines: amzn.to/3dfmjyW amzn.to/3qwT9PT
Full kits from JSS (You will still need to source engine/trans, and all other build of material items- jeepspeedshop....
BOM from JSS: jeepspeedshop.... May not open on laptop or desktop.

I think there were a couple of wires, hoses plus a few bolts to the trans and mounts; nothing like that pile of spaghetti you're dealing with -Ha! Oil filter will fit, tightly. (Fram #PH16 or equivalent). That's the same angled filter mount that came on my 5.7 WK. Incredible job you're doing; both the swap and the documentary. Keep Cassie Classy!

Header options are pretty limited for JK Hemi swaps. There are custom long tubes if you are willing to pay big $$$.
FWIW, a lower cost header options is the 6.1L GC headers will bolt up and should clear the bolt in engine mounts. You can find a used set for $100-$200. Reclock the exhaust flange or cut them off and use vBands.

I would avoid those exhaust “manifolds” at ALL COSTS, they choke, they get hot and they crack and will thermally expand and snap your bolts. Happened TWICE to my wife’s WK2 grand Cherokee ...
I would try the WK2 Grand Cherokee SRT8 manifolds, though they are cast manifolds they have a relatively large exhaust port and larger runners but keep a tucked design that may still clear your motor mounts ... and they didn’t have issues with cracking or breaking the bolts.
It may be worth your while to ceramic coat whatever you go with , and perhaps thermally shield your motor mounts ...

Glad I came across your vid, I was about to do exactly what you are doing here, except I'm keeping my 4.0 and just going with the 8speed hopefully opposed to doing a gear swap front an rear. Like you said, the low gearing in that 8 is a complete game changer, an even with the Rubicon TC the gearing can't be to low for me. After all who needs a120mph capable Wrangler. If my turbocharged 4.0 cant get it done, I ain't gonna do it.

I don’t think the 8 speed will bolt up to the 4.0, different bell housing pattern.

That was my biggest worry, and I've yet to find any definite info other than that 8speed is in a ton of other vehicles from diff manufacturers, Another thing is how to manage it standalone with a dedicated TCM, I assume it's control is built into the harness reconfigure you purchased to control the engine? Hot Roddin sure seemed a lot easier before FI & Computer chips took over. 😂@@JKGearandGadgets

Hi Ben! First, thanks so much for this video series. It has been a wealth of information. I noticed that you chose to keep the Rubicon transfer case with the 8 speed. Would you still go that way if you did it again or switch to the 2.72 non rubicon case? Thanks

Awesome video as always! Making it tough for me to decide on doing an ls swap or a hemi swap. But I’m really interested in seeing the Holley termx for the lj. Considering going that way with the ls.
