How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we quickly realized a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. For the last two years we've lived in a Geodesic Dome, which has allowed us to be comfortable (expect for the winter months), while we realize our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward.

Moving into the cabin didn’t exactly go to plan but at this point, are any of us even surprised?? 😂Seriously though, we are just so grateful that one of us was home at the time because for as bad as it was, it could have completely destroyed the entire cabin had it not been caught right away. Even though the water went through all the walls and drywall, we’re really hopeful that staying on top of it & running the dehumidifier constantly will make it salvageable? Does anyone have any experience with something like this, should we be okay do you think?
OMG, I'm so sorry to hear that. When that happened to me, the first thing I did was to call my insurance company. They sent a team who evaluated the damages and they had to take away the gypse and the walls where the water was and then replace everything.
Agreed, call the insurance company. You had an inspection. He didn't say the roof was toast. You should be covered. There's a reason they sell some fixer-uppers 'as is'. Then you aren't covered. Wait, there's a finished basement. I had this happen first time I ran the washer. Turned out the sump pump was toast. Do you know if there's a sump pump? In another house it happened because the window wells had filled with silt level with the window frame. That was easy, a few minutes with a shovel. A friend with a wet basement needed to redirect the downspout from the roof gutters.

If it flood my guess is the previous owners knew that it floods sometimes. As sellers they need to fully disclose anything like this. Some people do this, relying on the fact that it wont be known until much later, in your case that was sooner. Im not definitive on this but, if the previous owner built this, as you stated, he has more knowledge about this and it they were there awhile for their to be occurrences.. Does this explain why the basement wasn’t fully renovated? Maybe..

Fortunately, it was only a backwash line that broke and not a more serious problem like high groundwater inflow or a main water line. Also with that older gas stove and piping, you should definitely get some combined fire/carbon monoxide alarms for the cabin if you don't already have them.

Guys, I know this is feeling like just one more disaster and it's been a shaky year is some ways for you both. But, the good news is you had planned to do quite a bit of remodeling in that basement and you have plenty of room on the 1st floor and loft to get you by in the meantime. Finding out about the flooding at this point my be a blessing in disguise. Now you can plan. you'll be removing one of the decks and you have plenty of room to put in a drainage system before remodeling.
The cabin is still absolutely beautiful. So hang in there and don't forget to BREATHE!!!!!
I agree with Linda! It might seem like a LOT to take in with a new home, but better to face it (as you are doing!) right away and know that you will need a proper drainage system than to put valuable items in that space and lose them!

Exactly!!! It could always be worse. Sure, it was a lot of work but being warm and comfortable in here is still a huge win for us!
I missed the last video. What has become of the shipping container house build? If the water got very deep the drywall will all have to come out and dehumidifiers and fans ran for days if not weeks. My best to you from western Ky
Might just need a sump pump. We had to have one put in our basement. Never unplug it! Good luck! 😊
My basement has flooded a few times and I’d strongly suggest you remove the drywall at least a foot up from the floor. The drywall sucks up the water and mold begins to grow behind the wall pretty quickly. Once removed you should check into treatment for the framing that was exposed to water. I’m sure you won’t be happy with the chemicals but there are products that kill the mold spores and it’s a really good idea to consider this for the long term health of your inside air and any duct systems, especially if, in the future you have little ones in the house. I’m so sorry guys.
Best treatment is Concrobium. It’s also completely safe for people and animals.
Been there more than once and used to work in residential construction & remodeling. Water in the drywall is bad, even with dehumidifiers. You will HAVE to open up the walls, at minimum a foot high, and dry them out. Yes, it is salvageable, but there is a lot of work ahead my dears.
We kinda figured that would be the case...it's unbelievable how many times we've emptied it, must be at least 30 this week!
@@tylerandtodd ha yeah that’s a non-stop process. Does your dehumidifier have a hose attachment on the back to allow you to run a hose out a window or door instead of having to dump the bin over and over?

You may need a basement drain system, that allows water into a drain around the walls, eventually flowing to a sump pump, or possibly a french drain outside the house.
Anyone who owns a home knows a shopvac is a MUST for floods. You never know when a pipe will burst, a toilet will overflow or something else unforeseen will cause a flood. Getting that water up as fast as possible is essential. Then you call a mold mitigation service with huge fans to prevent mold in walls and carpets. As long as you get it dry quickly you are good to go. It’s a pain because it throws you way off schedule, but it’s solvable. Such is life - always a little detour here and there. Praying for you and the furry kids. 💗🙏🏻🐾

Live in a travel trailer. Travel to far off places. Build an off grid life. Whats a little water? Annoying as hell but it isnt going to slow you down!

Growing up in Canada, I remember a sump pump in our basements. You will need to replace any drywall that was in water to mitigate mold. Love your new gorgeous home beside the lake!❤
When we bought our first house they gave us the keys and we opened the door to a flooded basement. Get your insurance involved. You will need a mitigation crew and a contractor to come look at it and give estimates first. Do everything recommended because you will have a moldy mess behind the walls. So this happened.
They said they didn’t have insurance yet due to the propane. You have to have insurance to make a claim 😅
Remember, silver lining, at least Todd was there. Imagine if no one was there to catch it. I can't wait to see what you both do with this cabin ❤❤

My husband and I just recovered from basement flooding x2 The basement repair was almost finished when it flooded again! In order to repair it and make it safe from mould, they had to remove baseboards and drywall x2, plus carpeting. Thank goodness it was all covered by the insurance company!
I had a place next to the lake and we had to dig a "drywell" in our basement. It was only a couple of feet deep and even during the heaviest rain it took an hour or so to fill. The sump pump in the bottom of it could empty it under one minute. Our basement never flooded. Its weird to think that collecting water in the basement will actually keep it dry but it does work.
Those things work really, really well! Definitely could be something to consider in the future!
In my city all homes are required to have sump pumps if they have a basement - am surprised you cottage does not have a sump pump - apparently you do not have a sewer connection.@@tylerandtodd
Tyler and Todd I remember when I was your age I am now 58 I had the most amazing partner for 22 years and I watch both of you as he and I did the exact same things maybe not an off grid house but renovating houses I miss him dearly I spent most of my adult life with him and watching you brings back the fondest memories merry Christmas

I'm sorry to hear that! I was so hoping you guys could get a break from all the bad stuff!!! Insurance definitely first. You may have to replace the drywall, depending on how high the water line was. Drywall will mold and its not healthy. Be to be aafe than sorry when it comes to your health! Best wishes guys! Love you all!❤❤❤❤❤ Keep trudging ahead!
Aren’t there drywall alternatives available now that are recommended for basements? I heard something about this from a relative who lived in an area prone to flooding- it was marketed as being something that would ‘dry out’ if it got wet and the homeowner would not have to worry about mould etc
Not sure if it lived up to it hype but hope there is something Available so when Tyler and Todd refurbish, they are making their cabin mould and mildew resistant

Homeownership is so wonderful until you have a issue. Tip on the dehumidifier - get a hose run it into a floor drain and attach it to the dehumidifier. You won't have to dump it that way.
I'm not sure if someone made this suggestion on your comments. Get the concrete floors painted with waterproof concrete paint. This will help should you have any more floods. It won't seep down into the concrete, and cleaning up is so much easier. Paint even in the garage, if your car drips oil, it won't leave stains. I used to have an area that would flood almost every year from storms, and this saved having to wait days before the concrete would take to dry.
You can always use the 7 foot pencil tree in your bedroom if you get a larger one for the living room
Y'all! Our laundry room flooded this morning! Only we didn't have a Shop-Vac, so I had to go and pretend like I (Chris) knew what I was looking for. Gotta watch the boys every week...............they are amazing!!!!!!!!!!!! Flooded basement....I do know the feeling....big mops and lots of elbow grease............it will get done....I promise, no problem...gotta love the boys!

I had a similar situation (twice actually). I did get my insurance involved and had professionals come and clean it up. Besides dehumidifier they also used large industrial fans to help dry it out.

Yes get the large industrial onrs, we had a kitchen destroyed by dishwasher leak. The insurance company sent a disaster mitigation company with the fans. Unfortunately you might have mold up walls from previous incidents, like others have mentioned here. You cannot not check for it, black mold is deadly. Good luck & I hope I am wrong!

It's an absolutely stunning house and I can see why you bought it! I'm so sorry to hear about the basement. My brother had his basement flood, due to location. He used a sump pump, but I don't remember the other details. I'm sure there is a protocol from the professionals you contact. I wish you all the best, and that everything will be sorted out without too much stress/headache - you deserve it!
At least the flood was caused by something easy to fix. Think upside, you have a clean basement floor now! Squirrel was so cute watching the cleanup. How is Charlie's leg doing now? I'm not sure if Tyler should be left in charge of moving, he was so distracted by looking in the boxes haha. Can't wait to see the lake property looking beautiful in the snow. Especially as Todd is likely to put every twinkly string of lights ever made up all over the house!

Well, you knew it flooded at least once before because the basement floor was tore up. There is always a way to mitigate water intrusion. It might be expensive but I think that place would be worth it.

If you have concrete board it may be ok. You’re doing the right thing by running s dehumidifier.
Here’s hoping that damage is minimal.
Inspections are worth their weight in gold. If the inspection didn’t mention that the roof needed to be replaced, you should be in the clear.

You both did a great job working together with the flood and not spiraling! There are a lot of joys with being home owners but also some unexpected surprises, and handling with a level heads allow them to drift away with the tides. One of my favorite sayings is “this too shall pass”! Thanks for sharing the realities of life and home ownership.

I love the way Squirrel sits on the steps looking at you like you did a booboo and expects you fix it 'yesterday'. But Squirrel seems content to surpervise for now. After all, a cat, is always the supervisor of everything. (grins)
"When it rains, it pours" - I was house/ puppy sitting for my sister & brother-in-law once - went to run some errands (was gone about 4 hours), and came home to find half of the house flooded. One of the hot water heaters that were in the attic (2-story house, 8000 sq. ft.) had ruptured and water flooded both upstairs and downstairs. All the carpeting, vinyl plank flooring, and drywall on that side of the house had to be removed. What a mess! Fortunately, they had insurance.
Yes, get insurance, and don't wait - get to ripping out all the wet drywall NOW! Mold, esp. black mold is very dangerous not only to your health but to the fur babies' health as well. (I know - lived in a house that had mold constantly growing on the walls so bad, that I ended up painting all the walls forest green, to camouflage the mold problem - didn't work.).
Smart idea to have the propane heater checked out before using it. How is Charlie doing?

A little tip from a winter climate household with many cars- buy each car an extra set of wheels. One set for summer tires, one for winter. Not mounting 2x a year will not only save money, but also rims form unnecessary damage. Also, it's nice to have extra 4 spare wheels "just in case" instead of just one in trunk.
Call a remediation company like Servicemaster Restore asap; as others have mentioned you might be dealing with potential mould etc. If you’re close to Servicemaster Dartmouth give them a call. Best leave to the pros this time! Best of luck to you both!
Unfortunately, lots of flood experienced! Keeping a lake basement dry maybe a continual challenge. We’ve installed sump pumps, French drains and drain tiles. Improving the grading around the house probably won’t help if the lake is providing groundwater. All worth looking into.
I just have automatic good reactions when I hear someone refer to their shrink..why? It’s like having a family doctor, or a dentist, or a trusted handyman. Lucky person. As I’ve grown, my needs change & so do my doctors. Some are alternative doctors of various kinds. Self care is HUGE! (And I didn’t have a crappy childhood …but DID have a god education). Sometimes I need to hear just the right words, or have insights ….or remember a part of self care . It’s worth it and allows me to stay focused on what’s important and balanced for a best life. 😊

Knowing it flooded before you bought it, helps. Looks like getting rid of the entire basement to elevate the home portion might be a less expensive way, but drastic. Hopefully you can just get the deck removed and a drainage system down so you can still keep the basement! This isn't nearly as bad as what you've been through all these yrs

I have a wet/dry vacuum like that, they are a godsend with big water spillages. I was relieved for you that it was an issue with the water filter rather than a flood from the land.

OMG, you two can’t catch a break. My darlings, just grit your teeth and deal with it. It will end shortly and your beautiful new home will be ok again. Our home flooded downstairs 4 different times. We finally figured out it was not sealed properly around the base of the walls. Problem fixed!!! It will all be ok. Welcome to homeownership!!!!❤

I'm so relieved it was just the filtration system. With the dehumidifier it should be alright. Water that's coming in with rain outside would've been a much worse problem. Hope that'll be the last catastrophe for a while.

Be super careful with the chance of mold we had water damage in our house behind our kitchen cabinets and a waterline break under the floor t he kitchen and I’m allergic to mold it don’t take much and I keep saying it’s mold and the first company that came out to dry everything said no it’s not mold when our contractor came out I said it’s mold I’m allergic to it he actually removed one cabinet and it was covered with mold so the first company came out again and apologized after our contractor called and yelled at them 😂

So sorry about the flooding of your basement, not sure how many days has lapsed but, you should place a fan in and around the area most affected by the water to help with drying out the drywall and wood frames and minimize any development of mold. I think most all of us have experienced a whole spate of very unfortunate events that left us wondering who in the universe we managed to hack off and who we need to apologize to.
Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.
Wherever possible “double clamp” all places where hose clamps are used. Something that years in boating taught me and many others.
What a mess! Hope that never happens again.

I have no experience with this, but hope you get a quick answer. Crossing fingers and toes that this is it for bad luck. ☘
Since the flood happened after the service of the water system, contact them. The company's insurance may cover the remediation. You are going to have to remove and replace the wood that got wet, the drywall and any insulation behind the wall. It takes 3-7 days for the mild to show. Get some industrial construction fans and run them as well.

One of my brothers bought a house not long ago. Within two weeks, the same surprise awaited him in his new basement. So much water. He took it as a challenge and broke concrete, laid PVC with holes, gravel and recemented the floor. He also dug away from the outside wall, applied a waterproof coating, regarded the land around the house and extended the drainage pipes away from the house. I'm so sorry you had a surprise in your new basement. That adorable home is worth whatever it takes to fix the issue. Hugz
