The Agony and the Ecstasy - Fly Fishing New Zealand.

- The 'Agony and the Ecstasy' very well describes this trip from a couple of seasons ago with my long time mate and client, Kresten Ovesen.
Interestingly, i shot this and sort of forgot about it for a while which is surprising considering the very rare event that was to happen near the end of the trip... It was under blue skies and a manageable down stream breeze, making it a pleasant late season outing for us both. This clip shows the often fickle hand that 'lady luck' can deliver at times but more importantly highlighted to us that each lost opportunity adds more value to the next success. Always worth the wait! Beautifully done once again..Thank you...#bucketlist
Thanks so much for the kind words, appreciate the support
Good weather, good water, good fish, good mates and beautiful scenery, what else could you ask for? Thanx for sharing!
You're most welcome!
The Salmon always bring a different strength of fight, have caught a few myself targeting Trout, the stamina and fight they bring is something else. This piece of Water gives the impression that these fish have seen a fare few flys previous
That was fun to watch. Thanks guys!
Mark Hunt cheers
GREAT VIDEO, SPLENDIDE FISCH AND RIVER !!!👏👏👏👍👍
will marsouin27 thanks for taking the time to watch!

schmoonkie cheers!
When I saw this pop up on my notifications I paused GOT and threw this onto the telly. As always absolutely fantastic fishing and filming. Thanks Mike. Atb
Nemanja Gradinac hahahaha brilliant! Dethroning 'Game of Thrones' was on my bucket list, now I can rest easy 😜
Awesome footage you’ve put together there Mike.. couldn’t help but see you are also a fan of those Wicked Sister deserts!
Cheers Dylan, best of luck with the health buddy. Stay well so you can show me how to catch one of those big boys down your way
Nothing like a good size active fish to give you an early morning workout. As I said to Nick R, accepting and then dealing with the frustrations of fly fishing is what will make you a better angler. Another great vid Mike.
The good and the bad indeed. Cheers!
Its brillant mate...u picked the right title too😃😍🥇🥇🔝🎣🎣🎣
Ghali Angler cheers about sums it up
😍😍 superb!!
You are the best!
Thanks! (i think you mean Kresten but i'll take it :-)
Amazing video Mike !
ZomBee thanks!
I haven't watched the video yet but I'm already giving it a like. I've waited far to long for one of your videos Mike! You've been slacking! Motivates me as the weather warms here in Colorado.
hehe sorry about that, i'll be better - i promise!
Lot of nice big fish and even a little king. Very nice work on the vid itself too and i'd say one of your best vids from the ones i have seen. Great stuff:)
Was some good fun and glad you enjoyed it

KREME - DRY FLY DIARIES cheers!

Giants! Land of Dreams!
I am a fortunate man, my daughter has just moved to New Zealand and I now have no excuse not to go there, not that after seeing this film I need any more motivation! Great Video, beautiful fish well caught!! Thank you for posting this one.
Simon Smith cheers for the kind words
Paradise.
Vincent Donnelly indeed
Wow..wow... I am from India.. I can feel your feelings and enjoyments... You are in a 2nd heaven...
Sight fishing big brown trout on the surface. Doesn’t get much better than that. Really entertaining video.
X Papi thanks for your kind words
Big gaps between videos but man is it worth the wait 👌👍
Adam Tonkin Tonkin cheers for that. These vids take a shitload of hours to make so that, plus other stuff such as life, get in the way a bit...
So happy about the upload🤙
thanks for that
Really do love watching you're videos lovely Salmon, but i think you boys need a bigger net those Trout are massive ha :)
Martin Ebbatson gotta keep it as a challenge buddy
Super!
Paul Svensson thanks!
Great vid as usual. Interesting that you can fit the camp table into your pack. ;)
Yeah, it's like one of those transformers...
@@mikefsher Not to mention the wok and the chairs and the lounge suite. Well maybe not the lounge suite.
@@johnolds2583you cant see the 60in widescreen, but its there...
@@johnolds2583 my only gripe is the spa wasn't working.
Great Video. That last fish is incredible. Regards to Nans and Hans.
matmanx2 cheers and I will. Who’s this?
mikefsher - sorry. That comment was prob a bit creepy! Just a satisfied client. Feb 2018. Hans took me out and got some lovely Browns on a cicada pattern
matmanx2 heheno worries, he's a good man
Cannot get better fishing than that
jonny jones thanks, glad you liked it
Beautiful fish-handling and gentle release. Been fishing for 35 years across 4 continents and this IS a seriously good video. Not sure about the 15 false casts before delivery but great voice directions Mike!
Kind words indeed and sincere thanks. On the false casting, in wind like this, Kresten is feeling his way on each false cast, as a very long leader is pushed about on gusts, and as accuracy is everything here you need to put down only when you know it can be placed right...
Cheers....Fished the Routeburn Creek / Dart River area last summer. Nearly spooled by a big brown that took off downstream. A very wet ending as I took a tumble but saved my new $120 flyline. A great part of the world. Unbelievable water clarity
Mike and Nans are a great team. Nans will set you up with Mike or one of his best mates-- world class guides all.
We did a heli rip with them and it was outrageously beautiful, and full of large bows and browns. Some of the most beautiful rivers I have seen--from Patagonia or the Alps, the Rockies, Cascades and Smokies, Latitude offers some fine fishing rivers, superlatives cant express...the best of NZ! Nelson is beautiful in its own right. Start you're trip with a certified SI Kiwi guide, or waste valuable time trying to figure it out. Latitude out of Nelson is a great place to start.
beauty
Carter Ingram cheers!
Amazing video! Thanks for sharing!
thanks!
God's country.
Spent 6 mths there when I was 18yo in the 70s.
If Heaven is half as nice!!!
indeed sir!
Greetings Mike from Montana. Great video! Appreciate you NOT mixing a ton of Motley Crue-like music to the video. It seems all the hipster videos need to have head-banger music....BLAH! Hope to get down your way someday....take care.
Andy Roy Nice of you to take the time to say so, btw I agree on the music thing!
Andy Roy Amen! Love the sound of the wind and water and an occasional expletive when a strike is missed but hold the music please!
Separate tents! Has there been a little tiff?
Love your efforts to put your adventures on film.
Cheers! Im not sure any living creature would want to share a tent with me...
Damn what dreams are made off
rsa420 indeed!
Graet video, pretty, i SUB
EREZ FISHING & TRAVEL cheers!
First hit a like, then watch!
Hehe cheers!
Mike sitting in my living room watching on the Tele. I'd like to think of something poetic and funny but been a Yorkshire man living in Scotland that's not really me. So F@#£ing awesome post I enjoyed very moment.
Said like a true Yorkshire man! :-) Thanks for taking time to watch
Always a pleasure watching your posts Mike. Tightest of lines.
Is that the fish on the line at 6.04 at his feet half way up the rod?
Wich type of pant do they have ? Is it waterproof ? Difficult for a non english speaker to understand all the comments ,is it a private river for having so big fishs ? Anyhow pleasant to watch . Thank you
yep i been there
Unreal video Mike. In all of your videos I'm in awe at the slow and methodical approach to spotting, casting, and especially landing these beauts. You capture the capture the whole experience, with a pleasant lack of grip and grins, but grip and admires. Ill be heading to the south island here in a few years, will have to book you for a few days when that time comes. Also curious as to the rod Kresten is fishing here, from my perspective it looked rather light for fish of this caliber?
Haha just trying to keep it real, cheers. He was using a five and a six so about right for the fishing here...
Muy parecido a los ríos de la Patagonia Argentina
Guys, what a video!! What are the waders/pants your guys are wearing??
Cheers! I wear compression leggings - in this case by Skins, they work well.
Wow, incredible , how big are those Browns? Thanks very much enjoy your videos! :)
Charlie Palmer thanks mate - yeah some nice sized fish for sure
@@mikefsher whens a Good month to Book a Trip with you? 2020 I get an extra week vacation, and fishing with you is on my bucket list... :)

FISH-RS ?
amazing ! question for you, what do you used for the wading boots and the wading pants under the short ? i would like to buy the same setup im tired to walk with a wader
xpL julien cheers! I use sports compression style leggings and neoprene booties and wading boots
@@mikefsher thanks bud, i like your videos, it is real fly fishing, lot of guys fishing NZ are using big indicator, and for myself, this is float fishing using a fly rod, not flyfishing....
another great video, thanks for sharing mike! one question: what type of pants/tights are you guys wearing? i assume they are waterproof?
Will Seitz cheers, not waterproof just compression leggings...
@@mikefsher oh! got it, thanks.
Man, this New Zealand backcountry is just unbelievable. Some day I'll make it there! In the meantime: What's that kind of music you use?
Tomasz Sikora cheers, some of a mates music and royalty free stuff
what are you guys paying down there to fish rivers like that? just curious :) Greeting from Switzerland!
happy flappy seasons license and the cost of me the guides www.latitudeguiding.co.nz
wait, is it a salmon chinook that your friend caught at the end on a dry fly ???
xpL julien it was indeed.
Wonderful environment .... the trout, and in this case - also a salmon speak for themselves. I had a similar situation in the Adirondacks of New York (1981) where I had hooked the biggest Brown trout in my life on a size 14 black Woolly Worm with a red floss tail (wetfly). The fish was lying on the upstream side on the lip where the water formed a backwater. I was fishing blind to all the likely lies and when this fish took, it wheeled around downstream and zipped into the backwater, going into a tremendous leap. When I finally got the fish in close enough for a good look, my fishing buddy told me it was a Landlock Salmon ... my very first salmon ever caught, and my very first salmon to see in person. It never dawned on me that there would be a salmon in the river that time of the year. The bend pool was not that far up the river from Lake Champlain so that certainly was a factor and the water there is fairly cold. I never had even fished for salmon, so it never dawned on me to even consider the fish anything but a Brown trout. These experiences are why I love flyfishing and fly tying so much. Best of luck on all your adventures ..... trout don't live in ugly places.
yep, fly fishing throws up all sorts of curveballs for sure!
Epic video! Awesome water and even better fish.
Quick question, are tapered leaders very important over level line leaders?
MooshieGaming yes. We use 15 - 20ft leaders so you need good turnover
@@mikefsher Cheers. thanks so much for your reply!
amazing buddy which camera are you using and which one you would love to get ?
xpl cheers, this was an older Canon XA30 but I have two Sonys - an A7RIII and an NX80
mikefsher thanks for the fast answer, amd which camera do you suggest me to buy if i want to make HD videos ? Thx
Which exact part of what river is this??
...only kidding...😁
ComboverSoul tig the bottom end of the Nunya river 😂
3:00 This monster is very expensive in Taiwan
What are the pants you are wearing under your shorts? Great video. Hope to visit ya someday
Clint Lantz compression leggings and cheers, look me up!
Are trout that size good to eat?
Mark Sheppard I wouldn't know as I release them all.
can you give me some spots near Queenstown please
I'd love the person that disliked this vid to post here and explain why?... Seems odd that a little fishing clip could be that offensive as to invoke that sort of a reaction. I don't think i've ever pushed the dislike button in my life. If i get bored with something i just move on. Funny old world...
Yep , I'd put the dislike down to a slip of the finger.
Matt de Torres I could give that finger back, I have a spare middle one... 😂
Theodore Dow errr.... yes we are, hence me expressing an opinion...
Theodore Dow it was a game of two halves...
Just noticed this comment couldn't help but express my thoughts on this. I'm not sure how anyone that loves fly fishing especially in remote areas with such wonderful scenery can ever dislike your content, personally I think this is one of your best videos, right up there with Campfire reflections, another great vid. I wouldn't bother too much about these people Mike.. a lot of them are usually people with no content themselves & you will find this negativity in a lot of channels
First ha
Well done you!
First time these fish have been fished for since 1994. Try to match the hatch, shit throw a size 4 articulated streamer and have a better chance.
Cameron Kelly oh cool, thanks for letting me know... not sure how you knew, but cheers! The bootprints we saw must have been hikers wearing Simms boots. 🤔
Please show me the flies you use
Come over and i will...
Jajajajaja but I live on the other side of the world ...
Never knew Woody Harrelson was a fly fisher
Fsh ...or left handed.
Why didn't you take any home or even one for dinner?
Cause fly fishing here in NZ for me is an engrossing sport, not a very expensive way of collecting food...
Theodore Dow I guess one has to square away ones own personal ethos before taking the fly fishing journey, you have to be ok with all aspects of the game or risk constant internal conflict. I'm ok with C&R. Each to his/her own...
@@mikefsher Oh, I see - thank you for the clarifications.
Monster fish no other fisherman. Are these private waters. Lots of videos of NZ and monster fish but never any other people. I’m just trying to understand what’s going on.
not many private waters, but if you get to a spot and others are there you simply go somewhere else.
where's the agony ?
LR Lapua hehe it's all about perspective I quest...
Better make sure there is no one standing behind you when you cast, if you slap someone in the eye, they'll take away your fishing poles next.
Den Smith well at least that made sense...
Is this a reference to guns being taken?
Guarantee you hooked every fish you saw.... The agony...
Cameron Kelly well there is that...
