This is the most underrated movie ever made period. It is downright baffling how no one ever talks about it and it was not at all successful, It has an amazing A-list cast, masterful directing, cinematography, musical score, and of course performances. I guess its just a prime example of being ahead of its time and poor marketing, especially since just this last year saw a huge trend in gritty auteur westerns(hateful 8, revenant, bone tomahawk) I have been obsessed with with film since it came out and am glad its recently starting to gain a well deserved cult following.

The reason, I believe, why this film is so underrated (especially by audiences) is the fact that, much like Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon," it leans toward a more meditative style, reflecting and analyzing the psyche of its two lead characters rather than engaging in the typical gratuitous standoff/shootout sequences with rapid-fire editing, while also presenting its characters not as mythical figures (a common cliché of the Western genre), but as simple, ordinary, flawed men who are not actually tough but just happen to be prone to violence and greed. Also, it's quite more leisurely paced than "There Will Be Blood" (an equally great picture) and less action-centered than "3:10 to Yuma" (a considerably inferior picture). In a nutshell, it's a masterpiece.

Very true. Well put. I like Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven just as much for the same reasons, even though his charachter almost appears mythical in the end when he steps in the bar, he's just an old lowlife - albeit infmous - murderer; pointed out by Hackman's charachter before he's shot, where he mentions him sinking as low as killing children once upon a time and he just replies "that's right" not even denying but admitting the fact

I saw this movie when I was in my teens and it had a profound effect on me. It was really the first time I realised that films could convey meaning, which sounds a bit trite but before I just watched films with the expectation of being entertained. I had social anxiety at the time and really related to the Robert Ford. He has this really sad story of not being treated seriously by others and being slightly socially inept, which leads him into desperately wanting to prove himself to society. However, when he finally gets his chance and he takes a massive leap of action, it backfires massively, only for society to shun him more.

An excellent film all around. The cinematography... perfect, the script flawless, the cast incredible, the acting and execution of everything... fantastic. And don’t even get me started on the soundtrack. One of the greatest films of all time without a doubt. Very underrated

Jesse did shoot his friends in the back. This movie perfectly shows the real tragedy of human mind. How the man who killed so many innocents was and still is accepted as hero while the man who killed a 'hero' is proclaimed coward. Just like Bon Jovi said in his song 'I blame this world who turns a killer into a hero'.

I watched this a few days ago. Really enjoyed it. Great acting all round. And Brad Pitt does that thing that's so hard to do: makes the bad guy appear both likeable and incredibly dangerous and terrifying at the same time.

I grew up on stories of Jesse James, probably seen every movie about him, and read every book about him. This one is unquestionably my favorite. I love it how it's about both Jesse James the man and Jesse James the myth, and it handles and intertwines both themes perfectly.

One of the greatest films in my opinion and one of my ultimate favourite. The cinematography is beautiful. Achingly beautiful. And the acting is incredible. In my opinion, this is Brad Pitt's performance of a career. Casey Affleck got my attention and his performance and duel with Brad Pitt was masterful. Sam rockwell is amazing too. This film is criminally underrated. A true masterpiece

Roger deakins created some once in a generation magic with his cinematography here. Yet did not win the oscar smh. Pitt's potrayal of jesse, even more importantly of a jesse james going through depression and lonliness is perfection. Affleck and rockwell are 2 masters anyway.

+Ciaran Palmer i thought it was stupid at first but i think there reasoning behind it, i think its done to put you jesse shoes as i believe he know his fate through out the film but he never choses to run. also i think the part "cowardly" is actually a dig at people treating jesse like a hero and robert ford as the villian. shouldnt robert ford be considered a hero in all logically sense? he takes out the bad guy right? but hes not

In the second half of the film where James's paranoia escalates, Pitt is actually quite frightening. A actor of limited scope he becomes eminently watchable within the limitations of his ability. I watch this over and again for his performance. And the film itself is excellent - all including, particularly Affleck who's almost sensual frustration and obsession with Pitt's James is the eventual death nell for them both. The pace is perfect as well as the score. Truly a great film.
