  • As American Jews face an unprecedented surge in antisemitism, they are also grappling with division in their own communities. The debate over support for Israel is playing out among Jews across the country, with some calling for a ceasefire while others unequivocally back the Israeli government. Journalist and author Emily Tamkin explains this moment of division and highlights the importance of listening to one another during this period of pain and grief.

All of Israel may be scared right now, but yet, there are many jews there who would rather live in peace with the Palestinians if they could. I'm ethnically 90 percent Irish, born in the US. I had a few Jewish friends growing up on the East Coast. I was raised Catholic. I had protestant friends, too. No big deal. We just wanted to ride bikes and play baseball.
When I got older and moved to the western US, I had several Jewish girlfriends and became, by accident, part of a Jewish community. All of my Jewish girlfriends had parents with pretty interesting stories. So, I was absorbed in that community, but few of us thought about Judaism much at all. Some Jewish friends even made occasional Jewish jokes, which I never did and never understood antisemitism.
With today's conflict, I'm critical of Israel, which I always strongly supported. I'm critical online only, since I see no reason to upset certain friends. Ironically, I've been called antisemitic and ignorant several times. In response, I say those accusations are juvenile, simple minded and no longer work on me. I will continue to respond that way, and encourage others to do the same.
I'm afraid many Jews, including TV "journalists," are behaving in self righteous, arrogant ways. That is not helping Jews, and only will strengthen antisemitics and create even more.

That truth highlights a value I've found useful from de-escalation training received for street protests. Particularly in these times of heightened division and siloing fostered by social media platforms' commerce-serving programming code, we can often defuse knee-jerk reactivity by first acknowledging the party's sense of justice and, in this case, inherited historical trauma, then pivoting to the nuances of the issue which let them see who the real enemy is. My go-to pivot on this is the difference between leadership decisions and the will and needs of the people on both sides. One sad difference between Israelis and Palestinians is that Israelis can express their will without fear of reprisal. Of course, every rule has exceptions; a few instances of speech expression (about the war) have drawn potentially draconian punishments. In the U.S., we had Manzanar. War is always hell.

I come from a family that was one of the only Jewish families in the town i grew up in in upstate New York. We lived in the middle of the woods, and about a mile down the dirt road from us there was a gun club which we suspected, and later understood it to be true, that the kkk operated out of. But in the middle of nowhere that gun club, to me as a kid, being a mile away might as well have been in another county. I would still walk all day everyday through the woods with my dog. It was the place i loved the most, the deep woods. One day i was walking in a part of the woods i rarely walked in, it was across a street and was unclear where the property lines were over there. But this day i was feeling adventurous and walked out of earshot, down a path, over a hill, around a shale cliff, all in all probably 1/8 of a mile until i came up on all these no trespassing signs. I was 10 so i passed them and almost immediately was looking art the back of a two story house. And there in the back yard that was a giant flag pole with an enormous red flag flapping in the wind. I looked up trying to process what i was looking at. When it hit me that i was looking at a massive na$ee flag i spun around and ran home and frantically told my father. His jaw dropped when i explained where i was because it was the home of one of our town’s cops. A man we had to interact with regularly. A man who we know was the law and 100% had access to an arsenal.
We were basically surrounded - the kkk behind us at a literal gun club, a na$ee cop to our right, in the middle of 200 acres of woods. For my entire childhood. Who knows all the flags in all the houses beyond my 10 year old walking distances!
It breaks my heart to hear that im not jewish when im called out for fighting for a free Palestine. I wonder, would these same people who tell me im not jewish, or worse, that im a jew-hater, claim me as a fellow jew if me and my family, who all have been fighting the israeli apartheid, had been killed by these people who were surrounding our house growing up? I bet they would have.
To me that sounds like theyre saying, at least when it comes to me and my family, that the only good j is a dead j. And that feels very antisemitic.

That is not a "complexity" ... If you're a decent human being, then "good/bad" isn't difficult to figure out here... Let me help you out ... your focus in all of this is VERY SIMPLE .... I am completely confused why if you oppose War, or the concept of collective punishment, or opposing colonialism or racism by what is going on in Israel and Palestine is immediately termed "anti Semetic" or hatred of Jews.
Israel is a State, it has a government and it's government has its own policy for it's people.
For me, killing or waging war on innocent people by any government is horrific and insane, and ultimately only results in more hatred and bloodshed.
People have to get to the point that "all human life and lives are valuable and all human beings deserve the right to exist and live in peace.

Ive seen many You Tube videos where the Jewish people say they are the chosen ones. I’ve also seen a lot of former Israeli soldiers saying that they were taught to look at the Palestinians as sub human. ( even taught that as young kids). The atrocities that the Israelis soldiers had to commit against the Palestinians were hard to listen to…killing and torture on the Palestinians. So, when you have to combination of the Jewish people thinking they are the chosen ones…maybe it’s hard to have empathy for the Palestinians and can commit genocide and apartheid against them for 75 years.

As a child in grade school a new girl who wanted to be my friend asked what Nationality I was. I said I was part German. She said she had to ask her parents if she could be friends with me because she wasn't supposed to be friends with German people. I was about 11. I look forward to the time when people aren't taught by their parents their culture to label people as enemies. But when you make grievance central to your being you never get past it. Israelis and Palestinians have done it for decades, Jews and Muslims for centuries. Neither side will allow the other to live the way they do in peace on their own land.

I watched the documentary on You Tube called “ Parents reaction when Jewish and Arab children meet”. Near the end you will see that the Arab girl and the Jewish girl want to continue as friends, but the Jewish family said that she couldn’t because she was a chosen one ( all Jewish people are the chosen people…I didn’t know that) and she couldn’t communicate with the anyone but Jewish kids. I did not realize that Jewish people called themselves the chosen ones and had no idea before watching this documentary that Jewish kids are told to only play and be friends with other Jewish kids. I had heard where Jewish families will excommunicate with a family member if they marry a non Jew.

Sad and wrong though not universal. Religious extremism is the cause of so much suffering and evil in the world. Amazing how there are so many different "chosen" people who say the same. My Dad was Catholic my Mom Protestant he was told he shouldn't date, couldn't marry her. She converted but still I don't know if they were able to marry in the Church. He later switched to Protestant. I had a Baptist as a teacher who told me if you're not baptized you don't go to heaven. I asked what if you're a baby and he said doesn't matter unbaptized babies go to purgatory. I always thought what kind of God would damn a baby only loving some not others. Not one I'd believe in.

    LOVE IS THE SOURCE
    PaulTeich 10/31/2023
This poem is about talking to God about love
Love is the source of all things
You are the source of all things
    We can feel your love
    Can you feel ours?
We can see examples of your power
    Can you see ours?
Are ours destruction or planting flowers?
How do you view us from your ivory tower?
    What keeps evil at bay?
Is it a spell and apple and leaf of bay?
Is it an old fashioned ruler who thinks she’s a Bey?
Or is it the simple acts of simple people taking care of each other day by day?
You have given us love to turn Earth into Eden
You let us know we were without true gnosis with the apple Adam had eaten
Letting us know we get intrinsic worth from giving a rib and not from beating
Please take away indifference, give us peace and make us care if everyone is eating
    Love is the source
Whether it comes from you or me, love takes us to heaven on a winged horse
May peace, love and poetry save the world!!!

Maybe because Palestinians have been dispossessed from everything, oppressed, raided, kidnapped and killed at Israeli-will for the last 75years....and when the Hamas attack happened on Oct 7th, while Israelis and their sympathizers saw in it a barbarian act, many others saw in it an act of defiance by the oppressed voiceless Palestinian raising and fighting back, and they cheered for that small act of defiance and resistance despite the approach being wrong (killing some civilians)! If you cannot understand why some pro-Palestinians people felt happy for the Hamas attack then you cannot sympathize with the Palestinian grievances in anyway! we could agree that targeting Civilians is wrong...but for Palestinian militants, what else can they target? they dont have F16, nor the fancy American weaponry that Israel has! they kidnapped an IDF soldier (Gilad Shalit), and have been called terrorist for doing so....Palestinians protested peacefully in their own Gaza territory few months earlier and have been killed by IDF snipers (and the world didn't give a shit)....now when they do the only thing that could attract attention to their cause, mounting a large scale attack which caused among other civilians casualties, you re not happy? remember that military service is mandatory in Israel, so many of these civilians have indded participated in enforcing the colonization and oppression of Palestinians! remember also that some of the civilian Israeli casualties have been killed by IDF itself, and not by Hamas. Anyway, while I dont agree with Hamas attack, I fully understand it...and cannot lecture Palestinians on how to fight back....if you really believe in the peaceful resistance, then go support BDS...if u really care!

Interestingly, there was a time when antisemitism was ignited by establishment Jewish support for Germany prior to 1918. Most establishment Jews were German-American and most poor or lower middle class-class Jews were refugees from Czarist Russia Empire.

I think everyone should realize that most groups have had racial hate directed at them. Try to put yourself in other people's shoes. I'm glad you offered this perspective. I pray for all innocent lives from all marginalized communities.

Everyone should be, and feel safe, regardless of what ethnicity, religion, gender, or whatever you are.
Anti Semitism, and all forms of prejudice mostly comes from ignorance, however, there are those who are anti Semites, racists and bigoted, because of hate.
Saying that anti Semitism is on the rise is not exactly true, because, in the light of the situation at hand, there are many protesters, or others with opinions, wrongly being accused of being anti Semitic and even called "Hamas supporters," while there are many Jewish people who have joined the protests for exactly the same reason others did, and do.
And there is another side to the coin as well.
And that is the extremely manipulative Israeli lobby.
People's careers have been ruined because they refused to be manipulated directly, and/or indirectly by the Israeli lobby.
That is, of course extremely undemocratic, to say the least, and therefore also un American.
People on both sides are sometimes quick to jump on a bandwagon, and lose perspective of what is truth and what is right(ious).

American Jews have always been divided. The religious Jews have much distain for Zionist Jews, who seem to be Jews in name only, or when it benefits them. Unfortunately, it's the extremes of religions that cause problems. I've said for many years that the Zionists in Israel would cause the religious people great harm. Sadly, I think we will soon all see just how much trouble.

Like Trump Netanyahu has tried to make HIM representative not only to being Israeli but to being Jewish. You can't be American if you don't like Trump. You can't be Israeli or Jewish if you don't support Netanyahu. That's what Autocrats do. Netanyahyu had a huge role in the attacks on Israel. Israelis were protesting him now they are protesting to back him. Same as the Mullahs Iranians were protesting them, some Gazans protested Hamas starting a few years ago not that Israelis will admit it they like to paint every man woman and child not even born the last election and Hamas - now people are protesting in support of Hamas and Iran. Those who caused this are benefiting from it - most of all Russia, who Netanyahu supported.

Starting from 15:20...Emaily stated that "American Jews created a version of Israel that is divorced from reality"...This is a VERY nice way of saying American Jews are lying to defend Israel.
How lying doesn't foment "antisemitism"? Note I am using quotes since most American Jews have equated anti-Zionism with antisemitism (something that evolved only in the last 2+ decades), and expect me to love rather than hate those who dispossessed & replaced me! It is stunning how American Jews in mass are engaged in a feedback loop that is a self-defeating strategy.
Honestly, I cannot agree with Emily more; we've researched this point at Palestine Remembered. American Jews repeat big ridiculous lies about Palestine & its people that Zionist Jews in Israel abandoned a long time ago, and Ms. Tamkin is correct: it all evolved after the 67 & 73 wars, but why not before? This is a BIG mystery! I hope she can elaborate on this timing; I have found no one tackling this point.
Anyhow, let's hope the American Jewish community does gang upon her as they did to Hannah Arendt after she exposed the KAPO files in 1963 during Eichmann's trial. They have very little tolerance to dissent.
I have to watch this interview several time
    Many thanks Amanpout & Co

She hit the nail on the head.......................................................People are divorced what Israel is and what it is like on the ground. My personal experience, living out in the M.E and being an eyewitness to the injustices Israel inflicts on Palestinians, was a wakeup call to my own moral compass.
This led me to research Israel's background. Not using Jewish resources, but Palestinian, which to my horror I opened a pandora's box of shocking crimes Israel had/has inflicted since 1947. The Palestinians lived in a peaceful, thriving society, with excellent infrastructure. There were booming export markets, busy ports, railways which weaved its way down to Egypt and to Mecca. The university was the vision of a Palestinian woman who was known in the intellectual and artistic circles. Shops were stocked with goods from far away as Europe, India and China, The Palestinians had festivals, poetry recitals, art fairs, singing contests, fashion draped the bustling rural centres, such as Jaffa, Haifa and Jerusalem. The many cafes served Turkish coffee, sweets, which locals played board games, listened to live music and storytelling. There were many industries including metallurgy, soap, furniture, oil refineries (which came from Iraq), leather factories, arts and craft industries, large farms, orchards, beautiful residences as modest too. Well stocked hospitals, military such as their Navy, beauty salons, various markets to buy local and exported produce. Then the British arrived, followed by the Europeans. Initially, the Palestinians welcomed the Europeans with open arms, as having international guests was different, exciting and the loved it. Yet, under British Mandate was there first societal earthquake and when more ships of Europeans kept arriving and the British Mandate expired, the Zionists raised their iron fist and smashed it down on Palestinian society with such force and shock, it forever shattered a once, beautiful, peaceful, thriving society and its Christian and Muslim Palestinians.
The Zionists were massacring many locals, that is, stripping the women and teens who were then inflicted by systematic torturing, mutilations, rapes, shooting and throwing them in pits. These included some men, bullet ridden babies and kids. The total for this incident was around 130.
Another example, is in May 1948, lining up these little kids, and blowing their brains out. Another historic crime the Zionists should face is rounding up 700 locals, shooting them and throwing them into pits. Today, there are still eyewitnesses to these atrocities. that live in the diaspora.
There are 1000s of cases of crimes from the Zionists. More recent are sporadic murders by private citizens who go around shooting farmers or the case of that Palestinian family who were burnt alive and when one of the culprits married, they held up a photo of the very badly burnt baby. Its legs had fallen off, due to the fire and the horrific photo was celebrated, with cheers and dance. This actually is a fairly normal reaction amongst the citizens. There are so many cases that run into the 1000s, which include torture chambers, abducting, jailing and caging little children.
The conclusion is this...the Zionists should be bought to the Hague to face horrific crimes going back to 1947 onwards.
As what Palestinian academics told me, " When a bully keeps smashing you, over and over again, the victim will eventually lash back. Hense the rise of the grandsons and nephews of those who were beaten, stabbed, shot, jailed, burnt alive, thrown in pits, having their homes overtaken. These grandsons and great nephews have appeared over the decades in terrorist attacks, such as the German Olympics, high jacking planes, bombing cafes or 7/10.
The Zionists refer the Palestinians as animals, yet the Zionist animal behavior has proven there is a very deep sociopathic behavior amongst a lot of the population. Even Professor llan Poppe says, "there is something sick in the nation". They take no accountability and have no remorse in torturing, shooting, spitting, kicking, punching a Palestinian or bulldozing their homes, land, roads, farms. Who steals and takes over a well-functioning society in the 20th c, with absolutely no remorse and all self-entitlement .... the Zionists. The have become monsters and if one dares coitizes Israel and speaks the truth against them, you are called the usual victimhood line, being antisemitic.
I am so done with Israel and Zionism.
They have for decades misguided, lied and distorted the truth not only to the Jewish people but the world. As far as I am concerned, I totally wash the filth of Israel from my hands as I realized they are not only murderers and thieves, but they contaminated the beauty of the Torah and what Judaism stands for.
