The story I heard was that the band was in a car when Little Eva's version came on the radio and they all started to sing along with it. They liked how it sounded so much that they decided to try recording it themselves.
When I was a kid I bought the single We're an American Band, and I think Locomotion was on the B side. I just loved to crank this up as loud as I possibly could. It's so dense and busy, I really think that the way they mixed his voice makes sense for this, because it leaves room for everything else to be happening all around it. And his voice is so perfect for this. But also, I love the intro, because when that bass guitar comes in and you realize how heavy it's going to be, for me it's kind of a goosebump moment.
Grand Funk Railroad 1974. To my ears this version sounds like glam rock bubblegum in the style of T. Rex., David Bowie, Sweet, etc. The screechy guitar work was more than a decade ahead of its time.
I grew up with both versions. My sister is 10 years older than me so I first heard little Eva’s version and when I was a teenager Grandma Funk came out with their version. I like them both.
I agree with your take. The Little Eva version is better and they didn't Grand Funk it up enough. But decent tune, no doubt. This used to be on the radio all the time when I was growing up. Both versions.
Oh wow my babysitter used to play me this when I was about 8 years old I can't believe I still know the words I'm 56 this is so funny I forgot this song
MAN ! YOU GOT TO DO Little Eva's VERSION ! To me , born 1965 and growing up with these bands on the radio ect , Little Eva's version is the best . I love this band but this cover was not up to par with the original in my opinion im sure others will disagree but here we are. Love ya channel keep rocking !

I like this version the best!
Love this version, but I’m partial to it because this is what I heard growing up. Great great memories.
Remember back when I was a teenager there was a dance hall called the elbow room, played a lot of these songs!
❤

Little Eva!! Late 50’s
Paul Leary, guitarist for Butthole Surfers told me about these guys. ❤
Do Grand Funk's " LIMOUSINE DRIVER" a not to familiar song to most, I had the 45...it's a good song. Better than this!
No disrespect to Little Eva, but I like this version much better
