When I learned drums, I did do it intuitively right. When I became a master of arts, I looked into details.
I can't tell yet, what's better, but a good indicator is your ability to make people dance in their seats and having fun.

When I learned doubles, my instructor had me practice on a pillow-something with no rebound-and attempt to make the second hit louder than the first. Being able to provide your own "lift" in this case is transferable to other techniques like repeated flams too. Once you've developed the chops, learning to incorporate the rebound of a real drum and move into a more natural flow is ideal, but getting that foundation always comes in handy. Particularly when you're moving around the kit, getting "over" the rims playing doubles is a lot easier if you can provide some lift of your own on the exit.

Good exercise to strengthen your chops is do a multi beat exercise, slow and full strokes, try to make each stroke sound the same (do not accent the first stroke, it’s natural to do so). Turn the tempo up the more comfortable you get.

If you play faster with less distance to the snare, do you also use more thumb pressure when hitting?
Because when I try to hit faster, I often have less distance to the snare because of the shorter distances, which in turn means that I have to apply more force on the first hit to generate the corresponding rebound, am I wrong?
For me it often feels more like a drag hit. :-(

My teacher says every strike has to be intentional and that rebound most times is hard to control (he is a jazz drummer). In reality i believe it is up to the player to master control of the rebound and not sound sloppy, right?

Practice with a workout pad. I made my own for cheap with a chunky piece of high density foam with very little springiness. But you can buy them made from various materials. The idea is that the bounce is so small that it forces you to use your muscles more and build better technique.

just play quads as fast as you can, then doubles are lightning speed. Just start at 8 stroke rolls, and reduce by a stroke after a few minutes. It's exponential for your speed.
