A wise man once said “The Godfather is how the mafia saw themselves…Goodfellas is how they actually were”. Godfather really drove home the themes of honor, loyalty, sentimentality, family, etc. whereas Goodfellas really portrayed the mob for the glorified schoolyard bullies in silk suits that they were…of course both are great movies for different reasons!!

The Godfather is more complex than that. They're every bit as disgusting in The Godfather as they are in GoodFellas especially guys like Barzini, Michael, and Roth. Michael is anything but honorable, especially after the restaurant

There's nothing complexed about the Godfather.

14:20 Billy Batts was what was known as a Made Man, in the gangster life. He's pure Sicilian, which qualifies him and once inducted, no one from any gang, rival or no, could touch him without having a sitdown first. Even other made men couldn't touch him. Now not all Made Men act smug because of it, but Batts, revelled in his status and often would purposefully goad fights in order to see if anyone would be stupid enough to hurt him.

His legit fame was a low-key replacement drug for the loss of his notoriety and glamorous gangster life. As unwise as it may have been, no one came after him, the gang's power and influence had been broken.

Yep, true story, based on the book "Wiseguy". The real-life federal prosecutor played himself re-creating the conversation he had with Henry Hill when he brought him into the witness protection program. The real Henry Hill was paid nearly half a million dollars for the film. Henny Youngman, a famous one-liner comedian, played himself in the club scene. The Lufthansa heist was real ("Lithuania"-I loved that, lol!) Ray Liotta just died in May, too young at 68, but he kept acting up until the end and was filming a movie at the time. Great reaction because the subject matter is so antithetical to Cassie's sweet, wholesome nature (which we all love!) and some of the comments were so hilarious.

      Yes.
All the traditional Italian criminal organizations (Mafia, Camorra, and 'Ndrangheta) all have initiation ceremonies and the status of someone being made.
The American Mafia is primarily based off of the Sicilian Mafia, but it was still influenced by the other two organizations as the American branches of them got absorbed into the American Mafia.
For example, the Chicago Outfit was primarily formed from the Camorra which is one of the reasons why it doesn't place as much importance on the initiation ceremony as most other Families and tends to use different terminology and has a different structure.

As a person who is half Irish and Half Sicilian, he doesn't go up to the top in the crime ranks, but he can go high enough that even the higher ups treat him with respect. He's been to that club enough times to know everyone, both staff and gangster alike. They aren't doing this to make him look good, they're doing it out of pure love and respect. The fact that Karen is wowed by it, is a fringe benefit.

All definitely based on true events and people. The only liberty taken was Henry. In real life, he was a real POS, and despite Liotta making him look bad at times, the real Henry was far less suave and more of a slimeball than Liotta portrayed. The movie also embellishes his importance to the mob. He was more like an acquaintance who hung around on occasion and joined in on the criminal activity. At least, according to other known mob figures who were around at the time and have commented on Henry.

The real Tommy was a hulking brute, but just as wild and unpredictable as Joe Pesci's portrayal. The real Paulie was a disgusting slob - seriously, look at pictures of him. Interestingly, the movie predicted something that didn't come to light until way after the movie was made - Karen Hill was cheating on Henry with Paulie.

@andyindub But you have to keep in mind, the book was based on the narrative Henry gave Nicholas Pileggi, so yeah, the movie followed the book, but it was all based on Henry's accounts, for which he made a decent chunk of change. It's not hard to think a guy like him would embellish.

That's not the only liberty taken. Obviously the names have been changed. The real Pauli...Paul Vario was a rougher and uncouth guy compared to Sorvino's portrayal of him. The real Tommy was much larger than Joe Pesci; as well as the real Jimmy. He was a big guy....much larger than DeNiro.
How well they lived in federal prison in the film has been disputed
by people like Michael Franzese, who knew all of them.
The film, and the book it's based on, make it very clear that Hill was not a "Made Man". Neither were Jimmy or Tommy. They were foot soldiers in Vario's crew....and he was a Capo.
In that regard, I don't think it's overstating Hill's importance to the mob because it shows exactly what he was a low-ranking foot soldier who wasn't even a formal initiated member of the mob.

So Henry Hill passed away in 2012, he was in the WPP but would eventually get kicked out due to continuing his criminal habits. In his last few years he made a living by doing talk shows, podcasts, basically anything that got him reliving his past as a mob associate.
Also, some things to note: In the Mafia, "Made Guys" are people who are seen as official members of the Mafia. Henry was an associate, which meant he worked for the Mafia, but he wasn't a protected member. That's why it was so easy to kill him when it boiled down to it. He wasn't protected, so he was free to kill.

IRL the Biily Batts is a story if it's own. And was really not the reason Tommy was killed. It was more about Jimmy and Paulie keeping the heist money for themselves. Killing Tommy was to keep his share and then let the Gambino family kill him in exchange for taking no or a smaller cut of the heist money. By mafia rules they had a small interest in anything stolen from the airport. Paul Varrio could have gotten Tommy a pass on BB. It was actually Jimmy that wanted Batts dead bc he refused to repay a loan to Jimmy after he went to jail, or Jimmy borrowed money from him and didn't want to him back.

He would have instantly been a threat because the Burke crew would become his. Jimmy would never let that happen and Varrio was never going to let that happen because Tommy would have been a threat to him too. The made guy thing is for bosses and captains.
Gotti campaigned to be the killer of Tommy because he was a traditionalist when it suited him. He got the kill order and a couple of other guys made their bones by being a part of it.
Then a few years later Gotti committed the cardinal sin and killed a boss for no reason. The other bosses tried to kill Gotti over it several times. Then he became a lightning rod for the law enforcement and they let him live to go to prison while they got a few extra years of freedom.
Jimmy Burke was an earner and he wanted Billy dead. He did it and knew he would get away with it. Tommy was a scapegoat and it was a way to kill 2 birds. Tommy was too wild and if he was ever made he was a danger to other already made guys. It was politics and strategy by another name.
Sorry to burst the bubble of mafia lore, but that is the truth. That is the truth from Henry Hill's mouth when he was drunk and not having his words manipulated by authors, screenwriters, and a talented film director.

After the unification, the nobility couldn't trust the newly established national police to protect their property, so they hired private security. So the Mafia did originally start as a legitimate protection force.

This is easily in my top 10 favorite movies of all time, but Goodfellas is a "one of these things is not like the others" situation considering what other movies are in my top 10...Rocky, Back To The Future, Superman (1978), The Shawshank Redemption, Star Wars, Ghostbusters, The Muppet Movie (1979) ... all movies that leave you feeling inspired, feeling pumped with good feelings, leave you smiling and feeling you can't stop.
Goodfellas is not like that. But what it does do is make me feel like I've just been told one hell of a good story! The rewatch value of this movie is top of the scales for me, every time it's on I get absorbed into the story and completely interested in watching it, and the movie just seems to get better and better.
But I also understand Goodfellas is not for everyone and that is totally cool.
I also want to mention how great a filmmaker Martin Scorcese is. His movies are so engrossing. He has a certain mature style that he leans into, but he's also shown that if he wants to, he can make a movie for any genre.
I 100% totally recommend Scorcese's movie *Hugo* for you. This *is* a movie that will leave you with that great inspiring feeling like those other movies I mentioned.
It's also a great movie to watch at Christmas time. It's not a Christmas movie per se, but it has that Christmas movie feeling. I very much hope you find a place for it in your schedule this holiday season. I think you'll love it!
    Best Regards!

23:23 is the reaction I liked the most. That response she gave in the movie always made me laugh since first seeing the movie in the 90s.LOL " It's great."

I love how you say you started this channel to vary the kinds of movies you typically watch, and then you come to THIS! I'm certain this stretched your comfort zone almost to the point of breaking!

I like how Cassie has gone from knowing Robert DeNiro as the guy in Meet the Parents to now seeing him in The Untouchables, Heat, and now Goodfellas.

Love your reaction! I've seen people react to Robert DeNiro's performance in "Goodfellas" and " Casino" alot. However I yet to see anyone react to his performance in " Cape Fear"🤔Also no one has reacted to Billy Bob Thornton's "Slingblade". Missing out on some great acting. Hopefully one day🤞

Interesting that you noticed the kid version looked like the adult version of the Henry Hill character. The kid wore contacts had painted in Italy that cost over $5000 each, to help them look alike through their eyes.

Two movies you have to watch are A Beautiful Mind and Million Dollar Baby. Both are some of the best academy award winning movies of all time. Incredible stories and very emotional.
