Princeville, NC, is named after Turner Prince, who was born into slavery in 1843. Mr. Prince was very instrumental in the development of the early settlement of Freedom Hill and would eventually have the town named in his honor when it was officially incorporated in 1885, as he was the person who built many of the community's homes.
