  • There is 4' of snow on the ground at our next campground so we are settling down for several weeks at Lake Mead Nevada where it hit 100 degrees last week-end. This may be a long summer travel season for us and only time will tell if we are up to the challenge.

Hi Bob, Glad to see you guys on the road traveling again. A suggestion for your overheat problem, the big rubber and chrome Monaco rock guard hanging off the back of your coach believe it or not creates a circulation of air around the engine compartment which traps dirt dust and hot air, by removing that rock guard it allows the surface air between the coach and the road to flow freely and exit freely and will actually help draw warm air out of the engine compartment and out the back. When that rock guard was removed from our 07 Navigator it actually helped in this regard. The cooling system should be robust enough and when working properly should be adequate. By removing the rock guard and allowing the free flowing air underneath the coach will help with cooling situation regardless. Safe travels

Howdy Bob! Hey, I have been here in Pahrump for a couple of months, heading out again soon too! One of the things we worked on here was my father in law's radiator. He has a rear radiator, and his coach has had an overheating issue since he bought it a few years ago. I asked him if her had ever cleaned the radiator and got a blank stare. No was the answer, so we grabbed a spray bottle of simple green and headed down to the car wash. I should have filmed it, but lots of goop came out as we pressure washed from the back side towards the front. We weren't able to get into the fan housing from the front since only access is under the bed, so went from the rear with high pressure, taking care not to get to close to the fins and bend them.
He has had it back on the road 2 times since then, with hill climbs he was accustomed to having to pull over to cool down on, and it stays nice and cool now, right about halfway on his gauge. He doesn't have a digital readout of temps, but for him a good strong pressure wash cleaning of the radiator made a night and day difference. Not sure side radiators have the same issue, but engine oil vapor from the PCV slobber tube gums up the old CAT rear radiator ones. Might be worth a try for you if you haven't done it lately.

Pearl is my hero! I've been driving our 40-foot rig regularly too, towing the Jeep. More women should learn how to do this because you never know if there's going to be an emergency and you're stuck somewhere without your partner knowing how to drive the rig. Husband and I hook up the toad together as a team so that I'm very familiar with the process.

Pearl is great at driving the RV but she doesn't show any interest in hooking it up and/or any of the dumping duties. I guess that is the price I have pay and I think it is a great trade off. We do see more and more women drivers in the campgrounds and roads so I think there are more of us Guy co-pilots than folks imagine. Good On Ya!

Downshift and keep the rpm 1800-2000. Clean the radiator fins a couple times a year even more if you are going on dirt roads.

We met one couple that did exactly what you describe in their coach which is the same make, model and year as ours and he said it did the trick. I have looked in our engine compartment and it appears that would work perfectly but first I want to climb several mountain passes and make sure it solves the problem before I start cutting holes in the back wall. That would be a very easy fix and cost almost nothing. Thanks for the suggestion Dan

Google waterless engine coolant and check that stuff out. It completely replaces your water and antifreeze with this chemical coolant. This coolant has a boiling point of 375 degrees F and will not vaporize--eliminating overheating, boil-over, and after-boil. The low vapor pressure reduces stress on the engine cooling system components. Waterless High Performance Coolant will also eliminate corrosion and electrolysis, and offers permanent protection to temperatures as low as -40 degrees F. There are several different brands out there.
