I have watched this song now for a 100 times already and I STILL get emotional at the end. It has such a deep layer of personal loss and tribute to it. You can party to this song and cry to it... A real masterpiece.

Thanks for taking this emotional rollercoaster. Recap You can travel freely in a Europe w/o borders but the pain of the loss of loved ones travels with you. Follow your dreams and make the ones you love proud. Carry the memories with you but also their lessons. Joost is no joke he is a survivor right through the pain to party on the eurovision stage.

His dad died of cancer when Joost was 12 years old , his mom a year later , his dad told him you can be anything you want because watching Eurovision together with his parent Joost said I will be there one day so that’s why his dad told him you can be anything, travel everywhere , as an orphan Joost travels Europa but still in pain and grieve off his loss at the end he means to say !! it’s enough , I need to move on , thanks dad for your wise lesson , Here I am I DID IT .

I love this song for all its layers:
      - Happy start - a child that is carefree
      - Final Supper - Tragedy
      - Dark atmosphere - The pain and suffering that follows
      - The burning - processing, letting go and rebirth

He lost his dad when he was 12 and he did promise his dad that at some day he would make it to the eurovision and 1 year later he lost his mother now that he is going to the eurovision he is closing a chapter in his life and is ready to let it all go and move on with his life.

12 points to The Netherlands. The winner of the Eurovision Songcontest 2024.
This is a masterpiece. Euro papa= Euro dad, because papa is dad in Dutch. A sad song with lyrics with a meaning, with a message, in a happy hardcore melody of the 90's. A letter to his father who died when he was a 12 year old child. His mother past away a year later. He promised his father that he will be someday on the Eurovision Songcontest stage. His father told him that it is possible because there are no borders between the countries, and no limits to follow his dream. Borders and limitations are made by human. In every country he went, he felt the pain and grief of no having his parents. The fire symbolise letting go of the grief and pain, and the start of a new chapter in his live.

The buildup in the video/song is genius: happy music till you are faced with the slow part, and making you think "what have I been watching?".
Sort of forcing non-natives to go back, put subtitles on and realizing the lyrics are pretty dark, and wondering what the story is.
In researching his life they listened to this earworm for multiple times, and you got them hooked 🙂

It may have been said before, but his father died when he was 12 years old and his mother when he was 13. They used to watch the festival together and his father taught him that life has no limits and if you want to achieve something and Joost said that one day he would be there on stage. He has traveled alot as a orphan in europe and the cheerful tone is that he always makes the best of his life despite his sadness. And now that he's standing there, he's achieved his goal. This is a tribute to his parents.

This song has a deeper meaning. 'Papa' is translated 'dad' in dutch. Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was 12 and his mom a year later because of a cardiac arrest. When he was younger he watched the Eurovision with his parents and said “I’m gonna sing at Eurovision one day”. Joost sings that no matter where he goes or what he eats, he can not escape the pain of this loss. In the end he says goodbye to the pain of his loss by burning the photo, without losing the memory. This song is also an ode to Europe. His dad told him that it’s a world without borders, because borders are invented by humans. And that you can create your own world. The dance break is happy hardcore - a music style that was invented in the Netherlands, also called gabber music. Bringing a personal loss, the feeling of Europe and the dutch culture together; that is art.
The lyrics have a lot of layers:
    Europe let’s come together!
    It’s now or never!
    I love you all!
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Visit my friends in France
Or take a long walk to Vienna
I want to leave the Netherlands
    But my passport is gone
    Fortunately don't need a visa
    To be with you
So take the bus to Poland
    Or the train to Berlin
I have no money for Paris
    So use my imagination
Do you have a euro please
    Say "merci" and "please"
    I lost everything
    Except time
    So am travelling every day
    For the world is mine
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Eu-ro-pa!
    Ich bin in Deutschland
    Aber Ich bin so allein
    Io sono in Italia
    but still I feel pain
    Am running from myself
Calling for "help!" all day long
Yes I even give people money
But there is no one to help me
    I don't need es-car-gots
    Don't need fish 'n chips
    Don't need paella, no
I don't even really know what that is
    Turn on the radio
    I hear Stromae with "Papaoutai"
    Won't stop until they say
"Yes, yes, he does that very well ey!"
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Eu-ro-pa!
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa….
    Welcome in Europe boy!
At the end of the day
    We are all human beings
    My father once told me
    It's a world without borders
    I miss you every day
    Is what I secretly whisper
    You see dad
    I listened to you
    Is what I secretly whisper
    You see dad
    I listened to you
