The Hammer Everyone Overlooked in Super Mario RPG

  • Super Mario RPG is a game that I thought I had figured out as a kid. I didn't think there was much left to discover, but I was certainly wrong. Because there was one weapon in the game that majority of players overlooked because it was hidden amongst a ton of other early game items. It was obscured in the perfect way and today we're going to be revealing its location and its secret power.

    These kind of obscure secretes happened quite often in old games. The mushrooms in Monstro Town that turn you into a mushroom are another example of this (Same name, different effect, placed at a point in time in the game where you would never want to buy one). Also for me personally, I didn't know about the coin ships or white mushroom houses in Super Mario Bros 3 until about 20 years later.

    I knew about the lucky hammer since I noticed its description was different from the original hammer. But I didn't really think anything of it because, even though it had the potential to double my winnings, I didn't feel any need to max out my level and was never worried about running out of coins by the second half of the game. Oddly enough, though, I swapped out the masher for the apparently weaker super hammer in some fights. I didn't understand why at the time, but I noticed that the masher had incredibly random attack damage sometimes weaker than the super hammer, so I was willing to sacrifice the extra boost the masher provided when I just wanted reliable damage numbers.
    Every weapon in the game apart from Mario's lucky hammer has an invisible power variable that randomly varies attack damage. For most weapons, that variable is equal to plus or minus a tenth of the weapon's attack boost. For the masher, lazy shell, and frying pan, however, that variable is much larger, being ±30 for the masher. Thus, while the masher is capable of dishing out attacks more powerful than the next weapon up, it's a gamble, and my bad luck made it an unreliable choice in boss fights-particularly against Johnny when I went into the 1 on 1 fight not thinking about how that fight got triggered. Switching to the super hammer gave me more confidence in that situation since bad luck couldn't hold me back.

    I haven't played Mario RPG yet, so I can't watch the video yet. But Recenty I've been doing a 10hp run of Paper Mario TTYD. And I found a hidden gem badge I've always overlooked! FP Drain! FP Drain gives you -1 damage, but every attack gives you 1 FP. So, you can use badges like Power Smash/Jump for free! Or any other attack that only uses 1 FP. So if I basically use Power Smash as my default attack, I'm actually doing 1 more damage than a base hammer attack for free. And if I do start running low on FP I can restore it at the cost of a small damage reduction.
    I think Paper Mario has a ton of potential for different metas, that are easy to skip over in a more balanced run.
    I also think if you are willing to grind a bit more, Badge Power is objectively the best stat you can level into, because you can use HP Plus/FP Plus badges for 3 badge points, which is how much you gain per level up.
    ...Just thought someone might find this interesting lol.

    • @Itosalix
      @Itosalix 4 года назад +1

      I do "Constant Danger Mario" runs. Only putting points into FP and more often BP. After getting full control of Bobbery I locate Chet Rippo and take points from HP to BP bringing me down to 5. Then load up 3 pretty lucky's (there's a method), close call's, defend plus's, last stands's, (lucky day if you've done the pit to level 90- or won the lottery which works by number of days), and a insane amount of power rush's (Pianta Parlor). You WILL have enough BP if you never increased HP.
      If you are still unsure you can equip a P-down D-up for extra defense and damage dodge. To up your attack I'd use jumpman with spike shield (and ice for fire enemies). Mega rush can work, but I rarely get down to 1 HP with my method.
      Also if you ever need extra HP there's always a HP Plus badges.
      The important part is stacking the power rush's. You can deal 50 or more every attack. I only did it for fun, not because I'm a bad player.

    • @slapbass9125
      @slapbass9125 4 года назад

      @@Itosalix Right, I read about this! I heard you can do kind of the same thing but stacking Close Call badges instead, and Mario just dodges everything! That sounds amusing lol.
      My end goal is to have a save before The Pit of 100 Trials. Then just try all kinds of different strats/badge combos, and see how far I can make it. I'm just about to enter the 1000 Year Door now.
      10hp has been really fun! It doesn't completely break the game, but I get to use basically all the FP attacks I want! And battles become a puzzle of how to eliminate all the enemies in the fewest number of turns possible. I'm also using Hammer Man cause that's how I roll.
      Out of curiosity though, do you know if there is a cap on the number of badges you can hold? I figured if I ever did need more health, I could just get a bunch of HP Plus from Pianta Parlor. If I remember right they have them.

      @Otacon464 That sounds like an excellent idea.
      -Forward air is like Marios, but Geno fires off Hand canon launch for a stronger spike hitbox.
      -Back Air is Piranha Plants.
      -Down air is Mega Man Down air
      -Up air is Mii Gunner
      -Jab is like Star Rod Jab, but will guarentee stun for a few frames to lead into combos.
      -Up Smash is Samus, but lower.
      -Side Smash is Samus, but lower
      -Up tilt is similar to Mario
      -Down tilt is like ROB, but has shorter hitbox and is a small kick.
      -Forward tilt is a thrust of Geno's arm canon, decent range, being similar to that of Luigi's Forward Smash.
      -Forward Smash is Mii Gunner's
      -Down Smash doesn't hit behind, but matches Geno's other Smash Attacks. Basically a Faster version of Snake's Down Smash, but weaker to compensate.
      Specials Each have a timing mechanic, which can provide added bonuses
      -Up Special Is Geno Boost, but it doesn't work like in Mario RPG, instead, it Boosts him up to heights. Timing mechanic implimented into move, and getting correct timing (5 frame window after 10 frame animation) raises recovery height and speed and also boosts Attack for short period (5 Seconds after move completion) and invunrability for duration of move (2 seconds). Can be aimed like Jokers.
      -Neutral Special Is Geno Beam, Geno Charges a beam, once fully charged (Stars go away) stops charging. If you can time a button press to the completion of the charge (Stars vanish, 4 frame window), it deals more damage. Every star is a checkpoint to release, and if you hit B when one appears, but before the next appears (Second Long Window), Geno will release charge immediately, for decreasingly less damage from full charge.
      (Heirarcy:
      -No Charge (1/2 second window), Fox Laser.
      -Stage one (One Star) similar to Robins Stage one Electric attack
      -Stage 2 (2 Stars), Moderate Laser, After echo exists for a second.
      -Stage 3 (3 Stars), Moderate Large Laser. Ever played as Daroach in Kirby Star Allies? Geno's Stage 2 and 3 Lasers are similar to Daroaches laser charge, but don't freeze. 2 seconds of screen time.
      -Stage Four (Fully Charged, no timing) Fires of a Powerful Laser, Similar in speed to Thoron from Robin's Moveset. Multi hit.
      -Perfect (Fully Charged, Timed) Hits for 4/3 damage of Stage 4, every hit.)
      -Side Special is Geno Whirl, Double Damage if you time the connection with the opponent. Only one can be on Screen.
      -Down Special is Geno Burst (Original move) Star energy bursts forth from Geno, acting as a counter/reflector, but unique in that you have to hit B again to return the damage. Absorbs one attack, but if it fails to absorb anything or you don't return the hit properly, very punishable. If it reflects, you have to time the hit of the projectile. This would make Geno the only Mario Character with a counter of any kind.
      -Final Smash: Geno Blast. Geno charges energy and fires it into the sky, where it begins raining down on the stage. Devastating, so long as you are hit by it, can't go through 2 layers of stage (Two solid Platforms)
      Throws are standard, but Up throw is similar to Fox's. Pummel is Geno smacking the opponent with his arm canon.
      -Up taunt is Geno's victory animation.
      Dodges are Geno de-possessing the Geno Doll, and shifting it along with his power if they are Directional.
      I actually had quite a bit of fun brainstorming ideas for Geno's Moveset, which mind you are just that: Ideas. The exact movements won't be perfect, and the moveset won't be identical to him if it makes it into the game, but this is what I've come up with.
      Oh and I ain't no Nintendo Insider, this isn't an actual moveset. Just Ideas for a potential moveset.

    • @FrostGlader
      @FrostGlader 4 года назад +1

      @Otacon464 It's true to the game, because quite easily, Arm _canon._
      Forward air is a needless copy, but K-Rool and Banjo have very similar movement to Mario's so who really cares. Besides, Funny Arial is Funny, Has always been funny, and Will always be funny. Plus it would be interesting to have a unique movement where it can carry opponents straight into Down air, giving Geno something of an Input Move.
      Believe it or not, most of the Tilts, Smashes and Air attacks I selected are based from the "Standard" attacks Geno has from Mario RPG, with a bit of leniency to them. Even Fox Up throw was selected for this exact reasoning. He fires of either his Arm or Bullets from his arm, and this is reflected within the movements, The explosions are from his age (hand misfires and explodes,) and Down air is mostly carried by Gravity anyway (I should add that it's not a spike, unlike Megamans)
      I forgot Neutral Air, so here it is now: Same as either Ivysaur or Samus, take your pick.
      Ivysaur because of Geno's cape, Samus because Arm Canon.

Out of all the features you can get during a battle "Once More, HP Max, FP Max, and Lucky" Lucky was my least favorite.
