    That was quite a bit of mileage around central London....
    A couple of tips from an ex F3 shooter:
    For low level pics, the one over the water, take the pentaprism out, the same for overhead ones holding the camera upside down.
    For quick focusing learn the rocking chair method, spin the focus ring till it looks good, overshoot slightly, spin back and overshoot slightly again, spin forward again just a little (kind of half way) and your in focus. Like a rocking chair, it will go back and forward until it finds its resting place.
    Extra tip, spend a few evenings with the camera in your hands whilst relaxing watching TV or something and build muscle memory by repeatedly triggering and reloading.

    Good one. As someone 'raised' on film and darkroom, I found subsequent digital images 'cold' by comparison. We can scan film now (although the processing /scanning can be costly) but previously we had to rely on the lens sharpness and focussing technique (as you found) for sharp photos. To compromise, I don't do more than base sharpen raw files for screen, only on big prints. I also slightly warm up images and adjust to a small minus clarity. It still doesn't really look like film, but it's a compromise.

    Hi Sam , enjoyed this film photography series immensely .
    I had been thinking for awhile about picking up my Nikon F100 SLR which hadn’t been used since 2004 .
    Grabbed some Kodak portrait 100 a couple of weeks ago and finally went wandering around the Art Gallery yesterday after being inspired with your previous video .
    If you get the chance you should try out a F100 (a semi professional camera released about the same time as the F5 , I’m sure you will be impressed
    I has served me well for my ‘life in the pit’ ( live music photography ) over a 10 year time period .
    When I started shooting bands my Lit’l F301 was the camera I started out with before moving up to the F100.
    Keep up the great work

    Very nice video! Nice to see the trials and tribulations of a new film shooter. A couple helpful tips: when shooting with prime lenses, learn to focus with your Hyperfocal Distance and Depth of Field and you’ll enjoy a greater number of keepers per roll. The beauty of these methods is you’ll learn to eventually begin to shoot without having to bring the camera to your eye when you know those in focus distances/ranges. It’s a great way to get “grab” shots in street shooting situations where you don’t want to telegraph your intentions. Learn to shoot at larger apertures to get greater subject separation, especially when you’re shooting a subject across the street against a background; the photo will have greater impact. Keep up the great progress!

    Sam, glad to see you learning film. The next step, if you so choose, is shooting black and white, then learning how to develop and print it. (much easier than color). Instead of Photoshop, you dodge and burn while exposing the paper. :)
    Good luck in your ventures..

    Hi Sam, great video. I've also recently picked up a F3 and started going out shooting experimenting a few different film stocks and also getting used to shooting manual. I am an enthusiast, therefore, not a professional photographer. I do rely on local stores to help me develop and scan the negatives. My question is do you scan the negatives into jpg format or tiff format? Also, what are your thoughts on editing photos shot on film? Do you think post production destroys the purpose of shooting in film (as each as its own unique characteristics)? Lastly, what is the lens you used for this shoot? Much appreciate it.

    I also love film as well, I just haven't done it enough. I have an idea about film photography but I know it would be so expensive to shoot an entire year on film and then share your photos... I really want to do it as well. Make a POV of every session you take of film and it would be super entraining to watch.

    Hey Sam, curious what the thought process was behind overexposing the portra by a stop?

    • @Opticalwander
      @Opticalwander  2 года назад +3

      I didn’t it was an 800film shot at 400 so I was under exposing it to provide less grain in the natural bright light. I made this decision based off the fact I didn’t want to have over exposed images in the bright light and I even could of gone lower I think maybe iso 200. I had no other film I.e portra 400 to use

    • @mattleslie
      @mattleslie 2 года назад

      @@Opticalwander ah you are right I had it backwards. Thanks for the explanation!

    • @mattleslie
      @mattleslie 2 года назад +1

      @@Opticalwander actually, I am thinking about it (I am new to film too!) and wouldn't shooting at 400 when in aperture priority mean it is overexposing? ie, it would be 1/200s at 800 but 1/100s at 400, so a stop overexposed for 800 film. Not trying to argue, just thinking out loud so we can learn together

    • @ibadfish17
      @ibadfish17 2 года назад +1

      @@Opticalwander sorry bud but you are incorrect. Setting your iso to 400 will in fact be overexposing your film by 1 stop. You’re probably thinking about iso in terms of digital where lowering your iso by a stop will darken the whole picture. In film lowering your iso will make your film less sensitive to light and your camera light meter will react accordingly by giving you a slower shutter speed affectively exposing the film to light longer. So realistically you were overexposing your film by a stop. Film likes more light and color film can be overexposed by several stops. Portra for example is a film that loves to be overexposed, also over exposing film will give you nicer grain and add more saturation to your photo. Under exposed film will bring more grain and make your pictures come out muddy. When shooting film you have to think differently than when shooting digital. Where digital is apt to blow out highlights, film will have a greater latitude and keep more detail in the highlights. In film iso is all about how sensitive the film is to light.

    • @ibadfish17

    One fault, you walk too quickly. Pick interesting areas. A good background, wait for your actors to fill the space. Do a few! Forget film limitations of endless shooting. Don't hurry to finish film! If a few frames left, it's for next session. That large zoom a hindrance. One Lens! A 35mm or 50mm. You can use "Zone" focusing. Use smaller apertures, make an area of focus from 2.5m to say 5m. It will work out, use the stop down (screen darker) and try evaluate. Move, if possible, to BW. as you use higher ISO. Push film, I use no more than 800~1200. Very Enjoyable! Well done!
