I love these videos, they have helped me to do a lot of fixes on my own Mazda 3. The Haynes Manual actually has the torque spec as 35 lb-feet of torque.

Great video, definitely helps to see what needs to be done before actually doing it. I will mention though that the factory torque specs for the inner tie rod are 51-72 ft-lbs and the outer tie rod are 29-36 ft-lbs.

Excellent video. Thank you. You should probably add in future videos though that before you lower the car's weight onto the wheels you should snug the lug nuts to the wheel to make sure that the wheel is secure centered on position, otherwise if they aren't at least somewhat snug when the weight comes down the wheel studs can shift off-center in the wheel holes and the lug nuts may not tighten up properly. Just a thought.

When i removed the old inner tie rod, it didnt have a lock. The new tie rods I bought (Moog) did not include the lock either. My Mazda is a 2010, is this different from your 2007?

I ordered Moog inner tie rods. Noticed they are different than those used in the video. The Moogs came pre-greased and instead of a lock washer they use red Loctite.

I did the same thing, but my "moogs" didn't even include the red loctite, decided to just return and get the 1A auto brand so they come with the smash-down lock ring, seems more reliable IMO.

Sue says @6:37 "Now, it's important when tightening this not to rank on it cause you're gonna, you'll damage the gears inside that power steering rack." Does that mean there are no torque specs when installing the inner tie rod? She stated @10:47 that there's no torque for the outer tie rod castle nut and to just tighten it down.
How tight should the inner tie rod be?

    • @TheAgentAaron

As I sit here reviewing the replacement of my tie rods & tie rod ends, I saw your question. Much too late, I know, but for future reference, the Haynes Manual for the Mazda 3 2004-2011 notes the torque for the tie rod end (outer tie rod) to steering knuckle nut to be 35 ft/lbs. Strangely, as Sue said, there is no listed torque data for the inner rod so probably as she says, snug it up and give it 1/4 turn to seat it firm. Also, no torque info for the castle nut. Something in in/lbs. Maybe 50-80 in/lbs. Just throwing it out as an idea. Those castle nuts are tough cookies. Hopefully your project went well. This will be my 2nd time to do these.

I've read that it is recommended to remove the rack before torquing on the inner tie rods (not to damage or break seals on that rack), but I see many films where Inner TRs are replaced without that complicated procedure. Is it for some models, or it is extra precaution? I changed those Inner TRs on one car (2001 Saturn SL2) and decided to do same thing on 2003 Chevy Cavalier. But there was a white plastic sleeve on the Inner TR of the Chevy, I started to do some research and came across this statement about the seals on the rack. Now thinking that maybe it is a reason, why for both cars Haynes Manual doesn't describe Inner TR replacement. Very confused and would appreciate any opinion on this matter. Thank you for the good film.
