As a 12 year old black girl in the Bronx in 1975, I understood all aspects of the show. My favorite is when Rhoda and Joe got married. My heart broke when they divorced. But loved the show in general including Carlton the doorman.

Yes, Harold Gould was amazing!! Martin Morgenstern was such an understanding, sweet-tempered, patient husband and father. But he never let himself be overpowered by his small but mighty wife, Ida. He diffused her aggressiveness with sly sarcasm, whenever it was needed. Martin was the kind of man that every woman wants. Every woman with an ounce of sense in her, that is. Harold Gould was a pleasure to watch.
Check him out in a small supporting role in the great movie, "The Sting." You might notice Paul Newman and Robert Redford in there, too.
Harold also played Rose's (Betty White) boyfriend, college professor Miles Webber, for a season or two, of 'The Golden Girls.' Wonderful there, too. He never lost that twinkle in his eye.

People look today at class III obese models for body positivity, but Nancy Walker in this role is authentic body positivity. Though not a classic beauty, not super thin, not majestically tall (rather the reverse), or exaggeratedly voluptuous, Nancy Walker is a healthy beautiful woman whose personality and talent far outweighs the ridiculous expectations placed on women's standards of plastic surgery.
