I read that in real life David Groh and Valerie Harper were good friends, and remained such until he died. She said they kept in touch. If I had been a writer for the scripts, I'd have kept the duo happily married, but having some 'adventures' together. The episode Bump in the Night consisted of a sort of adventure for Rhoda. I'd have had Rhoda work with Jack alot sooner.

    • @RepentfollowJesus
      @RepentfollowJesus Год назад +3

I didnt care for her working with Jack. If they could redo the entire Rhoda and Joe part it would have been great. They made her too needy and him too cold. Maybe if she had just backed off completely and did her own thing he may have missed her and fallen truly in love with her. She needed more hobbies with the girls going off to ski or whatever. I dont know. I just know he didn't truly love her. It was more like a long date without the real commitment of true love. It bugged me. It wasn't her fault. She was the type that needed more attention and affection. He just cared about guy stuff. He had her for one thing only it seems to me. If only she could have created a vacuum to draw him in.

That’s so nice to hear. 🥰 I like Joe. I’ve been reading a lot of comments saying otherwise. I think Rhoda and Joe were a great couple. I was hoping to read they had a real romantic relationship but I’ll take the “good friends” part anytime. 😊

There was no chemistry between Rhoda and Joe. When that happens between two actors, there’s not a lot ( save editing) that the producers can do.

The problem was David Groh was awful at comedy. Some people just aren't funny and he was one. I'm sure he was a lovely person and probably a good actor for drama. But he was too intense and surely for comedy. They should have taken their time and not rushed Rhoda into marriage. that would have given them time to see if the chemistry worked between the two (it didn't) before they'd committed to the 'relationship'. Of course this was only one problem with the show. there were many others. They didn't have a strong supporting cast, the writers weren't as sharp as the writers of MTM, Bob Newhart show, or Lou Grant. Most of the humor was just sort of meh. It's too bad, Rhoda was my favorite character on MTM. There she was funny, lighthearted and quirky. They took all that away when they moved her into the main character role.

  • @BenjiOrthopedic

I remember reading in Valerie's bio that phasing Joe out was painful. They knew it was coming, and they did it rather slowly over many episodes and that David's last episode was a sad week on their set. She also mentioned that he had just bought a house in Los Angeles not long before they decided to have Rhoda and Joe divorce...luckily he kept working throughout the rest of his life.

Ann Meara started appearing on my radar when I saw her in the film “Fame,” especially the scene where she confronts Leroy. It is a powerful performance. She was not only a comic but had a great dramatic range too. She and her husband Jerry Stiller really became legends in their own lifetimes.

@@DavidinMiami, Thanks for your comment. Our perceptions of time and age are so relative and malleable, aren’t they? I remember when college students seemed like full grown adults to me. I had a summer camp counselor, for instance, who was between his freshman and sophomores years in college, which would have made him about 19 or 20, yet I thought of him somehow as being in the same age group as someone who was 35 years old. Now I can’t conceive of even dating someone that young. College “kids” seem more like older, grown children to me - and I strongly doubt there would be any coeds who could conceive of dating me!

Also, a different guy///a 3rd Nick played him as the accordion in the wedding episode. I enjoy Valerie, and Julie Kavner and Ron Silver. And Mr. Music as Carlton, of course. Kavner is my favorite. She's always good as Brenda, and delivers her funniest lines with aplomb. Betcha when she did this series she'd never _dream_ that she would eventually be the voice of a blue haired cartoon mother-- and would make a very comfortable salary.
In the first scene the guy playing Rick, Don Chastain, is given a cardboard box that's supposed to be full of invitations. But because this man simply forgot that acting is pretending, he takes the nearly empty box and flails it around like it weighs three ounces (which it might actually have). Little things like that should be noted during the filming session by the director and changed for the better. It looks ridiculous.
For me Anne Meara isn't funny as Sally; maybe it's the scripts. It felt like Sally was never fully formed; she comes off as a strong 70's woman but then they suddenly will make her wimpy and fawning to men. Mixed signals. She should have been either a tough cookie with a wise cracking mouth (like Roz Doyle from Frasier), or a neurotic wimp worse than Brenda with a bunch of idiosyncrasies and weekly unseen therapy sessions ... something specific and memorable for the personality. It isn't shocking that they dropped the character after this season. Anne was much better in Archie Bunker's Place as the outspoken and salty cook Veronica.
Pity that Ida only shows up in one episode this season (Walker was busy with other programs).
Watching this show as I have been lately, the biggest thing that stands out is that overall this is surprisingly inferior compared to The Mary Tyler Moore Show, from which it sprang. For me there are hardly any memorable or stellar episodes that I want to revisit again and again. And I realize it's probably unfair to compare the two shows. Plus, the chances of creating a second fantastic sitcom were slim to begin with. But this is such a different vibe altogether than when I watch MTM shows. I'm not even talking about the whole Joe/Rhoda separation fiasco. This sitcom was suffering before that anyway.
I'm glad it's here to watch on RUclips. Like many other viewers here, I get a kick out of some of the period fashions and decor and slang; I grew up in this era so this is always a fun reminder of my youth.
I do wish there was a lot more classic TV to watch on RUclips ... like uncut episodes of Alice, The Facts of Life, The Odd Couple, Laverne and Shirley, etc. But I understand that there isn't a big selection here because of copyright laws. Studios want us to stream their shows or to buy the discs.
Holy moly, I'm writing a friggin' novel here. 😆 Sorry for the length.

It's ok, I like when people don't try to limit their comments to one phrase. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I actually like that Sally was an oxymoron. A strong 70's woman, but suddenly fawning. It's dissapointing to see her fawn, but sadly, it feels more real.
Tough cookies like Roz are just softies underneath. They cultivate tough exteriors to protect their sensitive hearts. (Trust me, I know. I am this very character. 😉)
I love all those shows you mentioned. Wish I had someone to watch them with and chat about them with. But the people I use to know who were into these good old shows are gone. And those left in my life just aren't interested.
So I appreciate long thoughts on it from strangers in the comment section.

I didn’t notice it at first but when I went back to look I saw what you meant about the box of invitations. As soon as he was holding it with one hand that way it looked very unrealistic. It would have been easy to fill the box with some cheap material so the actor wouldn’t have to even think about making it look realistic because he would naturally be carrying it in a realistic manner and could concentrate on delivering his lines.

She’s apparently also a graphic designer in addition to the window job since she says she designed those invitations in the first scene and we didn’t have internet templated invitations back in the 70s. I sometimes wonder what the 70s would have been like with home devices and internet.

I agree with you, season 2 was much better. The new characters add nothing positive to the show. I've never been able to stand Ann Mera, she and her husband are listed in the dictionary next to the word, Luck.

I love Mary Tyler Moore, Phyllis and Rhoda but I HATE how the writers have the characters cut the pronouncing of the names = Mar, Mur, Ro, Bren, Phil - it hurts my ears!! I had a friend - and old friend but it drove me nuts that he always called me Sher - it hurt my ears - like one shoe dropping.

  • @michellepost5232

Gary is alot better than Joe! Rhoda tears down every man she encounters, yet she thinks Joe is so great, and look how he treated her. That bar so crowded would have made me feel claustrophobic. It's weird, as big a city as NYC is, wherever Rhoda goes for an evening she meets Joe. What I hated about the 1970s was those wedgie shoes, and those clog shoes. I never wore them, hating the looks of them was enough. The music, movies, many of the TV shows were great. I always watched this when new.

Absolutely gross that Gary is holding the business end of that plunger, or plumber's helper, almost next to his face (8:00). Those things are used to unclog toilets. I know, I know. This is a TV show and the one he's holding had certainly never been used. It's just the idea. Ugh!

I've just discovered this series (Dec 2020). I'd never seen or heard of it before. I was born in 1972 so was kinda before my time & I wasn't allowed to watch TV growing up. It's interesting to see so many young famous faces, then racing to Google to find out 'where I've seen that face before'. Ann Meara was in King of Queens with Jerry Stiller. It's sad tho when you look up some of the actors & they've passed away. Valerie Harper, Dave Groh, Carlton the Doorman...
Great writing for the most part, especially earlier in the series. I don't like this Rhoda/Joe storyline tho. He went from a good guy to a total Jerk! I dont think Dave Groh liked it either tho.

It's funny they cut him out of show. He had a steady job. Then he and Rhonda separate. He died very young. He was only in his late 50s. To me the show was funnier after they split up. He was good looking he wasn't very funny.
