    TOEFL Integrated Writing Practice
    I show you my solution for the second integrated writing task in the ETS Practice Test for TOEFL Writing (link below). I scored 30/30 in TOEFL Writing and I tell you tips and tricks how you can score high in the integrated writing task. In this solution I use the integrated writing template that I created for my TOEFL test. Remember to practice using this TOEFL template several times before you take the TOEFL test.
    Go to www.ets.org/toefl/test-takers.... Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the PDF. The integrated writing practice task starts on page 7.

    1) The Integrated Writing Task
    In the integrated writing task in TOEFL Writing you first have to read an article and after that you listen to a lecture. In the article the writer presents his arguments with regard to a specific topic. In the lecture the lecturer directly opposes the writer’s arguments by stating counterarguments. In the ETS practice test you cannot listen to the lecture, you have to read it. Your task is to write an integrated essay that explains each argument of the writer and each counterargument of the lecturer.
    2) How to Take Notes: The Table Strategy
    Before you start writing the integrated essay, you should first take notes. Write down the most important points and organize them in a table. This helps you write the integrated essay later because the arguments are well-structured. If your integrated writing task is well-structured, your TOEFL Writing score will improve considerably!
    3) Writing the Introduction
    In the introduction of the integrated writing task you must first state what the article and the lecture are about. They deal with the same topic, thus you only need to write down that topic. Second, you must state what the writer’s and the lecturer’s points of view are. They are directly opposed, so make sure you make that clear. In the video I explain how you can do that.
    4) Writing Body Paragraph 1
    In the first paragraph of the integrated writing task in the TOEFL you should explain the writer’s first argument and the lecturer’s first counterargument. Make sure that you write at least two sentences for each argument. In the integrated writing task you must show ETS that you are able to write an essay in English. You must show that you have a broad range of vocabulary, that you know English grammar, and that you can present the arguments of the writer and the lecturer. Use a variety of words in your integrated essay, paraphrase information whenever possible, and explain the arguments of the writer and the lecturer correctly.
    5) Writing Body Paragraph 2
    In the second paragraph of the integrated writing task in the TOEFL you should explain the writer’s second argument and the lecturer’s second counterargument. Make sure that you write at least two sentences regarding each argument. It is important that you use different words, do not use the same words that you used in the first paragraph. Use synonyms, in particular when you talk about what the writer or lecturer says. Have a look at my essay and my TOEFL Writing template for the integrated writing task to see how you can do this.
    6) Writing Body Paragraph 3
    In the third paragraph of the integrated writing task in the TOEFL you should explain the author’s third argument and the lecturer’s third counterargument. Write at least two sentences for each argument. Remember to use a broad range of vocabulary to express what the writer and the lecturer say and use different linking words. You should regard this paragraph as your last chance to show ETS that you deserve a high score in the integrated writing task.
    7) Score Booster
    These are my tips to boost your integrated writing score. First, make sure that your essay is well-structured. Use a table to structure your integrated writing. Second, use a lot of different linking words. Third, paraphrase the information given in the article and in the lecture whenever this is possible.

    I have a doubt about writing section. I have seen that many people start their paragraphs with the speakers arguments and then they introduce what it is mentioned in the reading, however, for me is much more easier like you did, first state what the writing says and then oppose the idea with the speaker argument. Do you know if there is any difference in the score or it is the same which one you introduce first? The questions usually says summarize the lecture... so i dont know if the order will affect.
    Thanks for all your help you are amazing Juva :)

      I'm so glad you like it 😀. That's a great question! It makes sense to introduce the argument in the reading first and then mention the counterargument from the lecture because the question usually asks you how the lecturer casts doubt on the points made in the reading. I hope this helps!

    Juva, thanks for the videos, but I have a question!!! I understand that in the independent writing task we should write more than 300 words, because they just say that 300 is the minimum. But we should we write more on the integrated task too? They usually say a range of words, am I allowed to write more than that? How much do you recommend writing on the integrated task? Pleaaaase answer my comment, I'm dying not knowing this.

    • @juva
      @juva  Год назад

      I'm so glad you like the videos 😀. In TOEFL Integrated Writing you must write as least as many words as the word count states. You can write more, that's fine. I wrote more than the minimum word count and I scored 30/30 in TOEFL Writing. However, you must answer the question precisely and ensure that your essay is concise. Therefore, you shouldn't write too much.

      That's an excellent question! The word count given in the TOEFL is a minimum requirement, so you can write more. Actually, I recommend writing a bit more than the word count because this shows TOEFL that you are able to write longer essays. I wrote more in my TOEFL and I scored 30/30 in TOEFL Writing.

    • @juva

      I assume that it may be the TOEFL, however, I'd recommend contacting the relevant institution where you need to submit your certificate and asking them what they accept since this may differ. Hope this helps :)

    What is the word limit for integrated writing as per new norms?

    • @juva
      @juva  3 года назад

      In the integrated essay you should write at least 280-300 words. However, don't worry, the minimum word count will be stated when you take your TOEFL test.

    The article and the lecture both deals with the voting system in the United States of America. Whilst the author thinks that computerized voting system has more advantages than the traditional system of voting for three specific reasons, The lecturer opposes the author's claims. In his opinion, the traditional system is more reliable than computerized system.
    First, the writer claims that traditional way of voting has plenty of errors occurred during the past elections. Furthermore, it is stated in the article that computers used in the elections are way easier to use and you can increase the font size of the names during voting. In contrast, the professor argues that many of the voters are not familiarized with the new voting system. Additionally, he maintains that most voters cast a wrong vote and deterred repeating their votes during elections.
    Second, the author mentions that in the traditional counting of votes, humans are responsible for mistakes. On top of that, it can lead to a lengthy process of recounting the votes which is very expensive, Consequently, with computerized system the votes are automatically counted. However, the professor calls this argument into question by saying that computers are prone to errors because it is made by humans. Moreover, he remarks that if error occurs during the elections, the situation will be much worse.
    Finally, the writer asserts that computerized system disadvantages are very slim. In addition to that, it is mentioned in the passage that people put their faith when using advance technology in everyday life. As opposed by the author, the professor holds that computers are improved over the years. He highlights that voting is a rare event and it does not suffice.
