From iRobot to Stephen Spielberg's AI, humanoid robots are the stuff of science fiction. For almost a century, futurists and soothsayers have predicted the dawn of a new species: the robot. Not only would these mechanical marvels walk and talk, but they'd also handle all the tasks we didn't want to do, from chores to mining.
Far back in 1932, British inventor Harry May showed off his robotic invention called Alpha, which could fire a gun at a target. To a world shocked by the rampant unemployment of the Great Depression, the humanoid robot was a terrifying prospect. Here was a worker without needs of food, water, or rest.
Yet, almost a century on, the nightmare never came to pass. While robots are now commonplace in factories worldwide, they're robotic arms screwing on car wheels or producing high-end electronics, the humanoid robot remains elusive.
Until now.

Not at all. One set of robots has good mobility and object manipulation skills. One robot has advanced information access. One robot has a highly developed set of "facial muscles".
What is lacking is the ability to learn. Look for Tesla to demonstrate that later this year.

Issac Asimov's law of robotics? It is close, it's practically here. But the ones that will take the world by storm are the last two- the humanoid robots that display human expression and responce.. I've always had a fascination for robots: 20 + years ago, I designed a robotic arm. Several co workers at Worthington industries couldn't believe it.
Every robotics maker so far has thoroughly rejected applying Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics. Why? Military applications. Kill-bots.
In any case, Asimov consistently wrote about ways robots would work around the Three Laws in order to manipulate mankind. They were never meant to be fool-proof. But they're far better than the unethical horrors we have in store.

It's actually within our DNA to harm ourselves. SAD. If we're not careful, this may one day become a robot planet.

A quotation from 'I, Robot' yeah? Call me crazy, but I imagine Will Smith was just reading the script, written by the film's screenwriters, adapted from Isaac Asimov's original ideas.

I wonder if they intentionally left the skin “bone white” and also left off any hair on purpose. Maybe people would become uncomfortable if it was too lifelike? Just curious.
Comparing the two, to my mind Sophia looks blatantly fake in all respects, whereas Ameca looks incredibly lifelike from a “facial-feature” perspective, but utterly fake from a materials/complexion perspective. However, both personality algorithms are unique and intriguing.
Ameca is definitely more human like!
according to an developer interview the gray skin of ameca is actually intentinal^^ they appearently asked themselves the same question whether going completly human with it goes too deep into uncanny valley.
AI 'robots' (which are non-mobile so not really robots) are the 'Sex Sells" marketing arm of borng and repetitive industrial robots. There will NEVER be a world of cyborgs where in "June 2021 Skynet became self-aware." You're FAR more likely to lose all of your savings to an Indian-hacking inter-network. The cool 'VPN app' is constantly being scanned for your PII.
I don't understand the need to make robots aesthetically pleasing. I don't. I want to be reminded these things are robots and not humanoid adjacent. They are just tools. I'd rather they put on a 2nd set of arms or whatever multi-limbed configuration. But I don't want it to smile at me. I want it highly functional.
@@Cognaxance i think it boils down to design philosophphy and practicality. like, building a highly efficient robot will likely result in a less humanoid design but on the flip side, it may need specific tools and parts to be build, making it more expensive to buy and maintain. on the other hand however, a more generilized approach usually ends with some degree of anthropomorphism (a humanoid shape) to allow the machine to use human tools which are already there. and that is where the problems start, taking ameca for example: the designers could easily make a life like face for it (thare are actually vidios that demonstrate this, sophia being another example) but they realized that it triggers the uncanny vally response. so to make the robot more approacheble, they gave it obvios gray, artificial skin which made it easier on the eyes. i gues what it will boil down to in the future is to strike a balance between form and function that does not fall into uncanny valley. but at the end of the day, that is just my opinion given what little i actually know about the topic. also, bad grammar....

Relax bro. It's not those creatures of bits of metal and wires you need to be afraid of. The spread of A.I. in administrative computer systems is something to have nightmares about. Not because A.I. of itself will turn against us. But because it can be so easily abused by destructive powers.
If we are to move into the future, we as humans must learn to improve ourselves. The stop gap of robotics proves nothing.
Interesting... the first person to respond to your comment latches onto your screen name instead of what you actually said, and thus it beautifully illustrates your comment. We're a species of social animals who are weirdly anti-social, and trying to side-step that basic problem does nothing to solve it. People speak as though science & religion are radically different ways of looking at things, & that we have to choose one or the other - yet neither one has succeeded in helping us live in peace with ourselves, each other, & the world we live in. We try to build imitation humans that are "perfect", or force people to follow religious rules that will make us "perfect", but we have no idea what a "perfect" human is.
They talk about how scary it is that "this robot" and "that robot" has (more) or (most) "facial expression". Not once did they talk about the robots showing actual emotions.. THAT is what would be scary in the A.I. world. They're not there yet.
Can the ethics of AI ever exceed that of the programmers? Emotions without ethics would indeed be frightening. Imagine the temper tantrum of a 2-year old executed with superhuman strength!

I suppose there are several options on the best face to put on a robot. I'd go for the C3P0 style in that it works in a human environment and with human tools. The SciFi films usually focuses on human appearance because it was easier to have a human actor with prosthetics. In the real world an intimidating robot would be inadvisable if you wanted relatable, and you'd have to emphasise a smiling face and a lack of teeth and claws once it got bigger than the average human. The Terminator, acted by Schwarzenegger, made a certain amount of sense as you'd need a bigger frame in early models, and the later ones tended to be smaller as you'd expect. The story originated by Philip K Dick's 'Flow my tears' according to the sources I have found, but I'm sure I remember a short story involving robotic assassins, one of which appeared to be a small boy with a small teddybear designed to penetrate as a trojan horse, the remaining redoubts of the residual human population. Prurience however suggests that for film purposes a synthetic siren (that's the one with hooters rather than the one that is a hooter if you'll pardon the crudity) is favourite.
The problem with robots is that the people implementing them are selfish sociopaths who only think about using them for killing people or for funnelling ever more money into their pockets.
I believe the movie you're thinking of is called, "Screamers." I think the lead actor was the same guy who played Robocop.

Atlas is more like the future of robotics.The addition of speech to communicate and reason with its master and to be able to drive would make him more versatile and fun when he gets pulled over for speeding. Atlas doesn't have to look human but acting like one would be beneficial for us to blame if something went wrong.
As we move into the future I do feel like automation will become more of a factor but yes it does seem like we're still in the baby stages the technology is still developing you can see it and I do think it will be a while because it is still rather cost prohibitive as in most people will not want to spend the money.
They aren't showing the robots in meat processing plants that are just tiny eye and chip that can rehang 98 chickens a minute and on the correct line based on weight and bruising.
Almost all packaged foods and processed foods are done by AI.
Cars, tools, baby swings, medication, military weapons and planes, nukes and anything They read the instructions on. They are already producing and packaging almost everything you buy in industrial plants. The people now are the ones loading the supplies they need so this thing can work nonstop for 2 and 3 shifts. No need for lunch or bathroom breaks and no paycheck. No retirement or social security and the rich get richer. This is the whole reason they created them. Now they are trying to make humanlike models.
AI can actually build AI. This is dangerous to the max. Just like the game Go. They will eventually eliminate anything they don't need. They recharge themselves and build the recharging ports and other AI.
I see what's coming to humans if just one programmer has evil thoughts. These they show here are babies compared to what's been around for years and the day the whole world was able to buy cellphones and internet we've all been teaching this main AI that I'm writing on right now. Humans won't have jobs much longer. Then you know what's expected to buy and sell right?

The two most (world recognized) AI robots were put on demonstration a short time ago together and after a brief introduction with a human reporter, left to their own devices to chat. The conversation was hilariously sophomoric, like incels talking about group sex, then shortly after, the two AI constructs (non-mobile) fell into a 'I know you are, but what am I?" DO LOOP and their plugs got pulled. Kinda like when Elon Musk demonstrated his (mockup) Tesla truck windows and they easily smashed.

Well, if the robot is actually an AI robot then, over time, it will learn just like humans do.
Look at the evolution of AI computers playing chess and then Go. Not hard for humans to beat at first. Then unbeatable by humans after enough 'growing up' time.

The only way to interact with a robot or A.I. is with a rifle or a a shotgun.
The worries about robot's lack of a need for sleep as a competitive edge against human labor is premature. If they use neural-like networks, it's possible at some level of function they will need to go into a mode of operation similar to sleep to do some "housekeeping" and "garbage collecting" for a lengthy period of time.
Yeah, and when we get a "General Artifical Intelligence" right, they will probably also have likes and dislikes. Cause, you know, neural networks are not programmed, they are TRAINED. Based on REWARD. Like a HUMAN.

I think the short term future for humanoid robots will be co-operation where Atlas is used for the movement and Ameca is used for the expressions. And I think Ameca is the way robot expressions should go because that face will cause much less uncanny valley issues and still be able to express all the feelings that are needed for proper human interaction. I don't belive humanoid robots can successfully skip uncanny valley and trying to force flesh-like appearance without proper animatronics will just make the robot appear as sick or disease burnened which is obviously not good PR.

I heard that Japan is the pioneer country in developing robots for senior-care. I think that’s a great idea. If it came to fruition, it would be a big help for care-givers & for seniors who live alone. Imagine the robots can perform all the mundane, heavy-lifting & dirty works in caring for frail seniors and keeping them safe. This will enable more frail elderly ppl to live independently instead of going nursing homes.
People need other people with a soul and personality to take care of them otherwise life is hollow as a robots eyes….
On the contrary, with robots’ help, caregivers, friends & family members can have more time and energy to converse & doing fun things with the seniors.

That is a great idea. That is very difficult to do for humans from an emotional standpoint. I cared for my mom the last 5yrs of her life. She had dementia. Very emotionally draining and heartbreaking for me personally.

I'd say we are about 10-20 years away from all this tech fully developing and combining. And the only one's that will be able to afford to buy them will be governments, corporations and the very wealthy.

Am I the only one who thinks that this posting is something right out of the outer limits?
Imagine having a robot golf caddy. It can carry your clubs, add your score, give you the score you had on previous rounds and provide you with the perfect club at any time. Then if you argued that it gave you the wrong club, it's response would be that based on your prior rounds, from the same distance and taking into account the wind speed, elevation or drop to the pin, that is why it gave you the club. It could also use internal videos or photo footage it stored in it's memory from previous golf rounds. It could even suggest different strategies on the tee like where to aim, based on the wind speed. On the green, it could calculate the slope to the hole using various camera angles and speed sensors to give you the perfect putt every time. The ultimate caddy.

I keep wondering about the human need to make them appear like us. I was creeped out not by the machines themselves but by the look of supreme pride I saw in the eyes of the humans as they interacted with the machines. The "parental pride", the adoration already showing that we are in fact, creating something new to adore, make superior (in our minds) and create a new god if we continue down this road, so very impr essed with what we can create to appear as human rather than actually BE humans completely by taking care of our own species. Me thinks we are doomed.

I worked as a temp in Silicon Valley some 20 years ago. We had a robot on duty in the mail room who used to deliver the mail to all the departments. I always thought that was pretty stellar!

But Pepper was able to recognize that i was trying to take his picture. so struck a pose. Vogue. 🎶🤖 i was impressed. ☮️🖖

@@Frankjc3rd Asimov's laws of robotics are not scientific laws, they are instructions built in to every robot in his stories to prevent them malfunctioning in a way that could be dangerous. The first law is that a robot shall not harm a human, or by inaction allow a human to come to harm. The second law is that a robot shall obey any instruction given to it by a human, and the third law is that a robot shall avoid actions or situations that could cause it to come to harm itself. Where these laws conflict, precedence is given to the first law, then the second law, with the robot's self-preservation taking last place. Asimov's laws were created by Isaac Asimov as a counter to the Frankenstein legend - that any halfway intelligent creation of mankind would be flawed and jealous of humanity and must inevitably turn on its creator. Before Asimov science fiction was filled with dangerous killer robots. After him we have friendly, almost human androids. The three laws are - and it is important to get them in order - 1 - A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2 - A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the first law. 3 - A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the first or second law. These laws were invented for science fiction, but they are treated with great credibility in the field of robotics (after all, Asimov came up with the word robotics). Should the day come when we have reasoning, intelligent robots, you can bet that Asimov's Laws will be the first in.

Two points: 1) There's actually another one. The Zeroth Law (it came later, chronologically, but is more fundamental) states that a robot is incapable of causing Mankind harm, or by inaction...... 2) He made them up, but I dare say that cyberneticists will implement something like them (if we ever get that far) cause it's a good idea as well as the fact that many of them will have read Asimov's novels.

It's also worth noting that while Asimov's Laws appear reasonable on the surface, some of the fiction they appear in (at least the book "I, robot") deals with how these apparently immutable laws designed to prevent robots harming humans can have harmful consequences. Worth reading...

Asimov's robot stories are fascinating as science fiction and as an exploration of moral values and sociological mores. He plays around with the three laws to demonstrate their value and also their shortcomings, I recommend "The Complete Robot" - a collection of his short stories over the decades as an introduction to his then ground-breaking ideas.

Legs. We all know how terribly difficult it is to affordably make a heavy humanoid robot walk on uneven terrain. But I think its too creepy to have a humanoid walk with the reverse knee, horse gait even if the robot looks completely fake as in this delivery robot in the video. I guess as usual with the Internet in terms of video/ai etc, we have to wait for advances in the pornography area and in the human companion robot business to create more realistic looking, moving and feeling robots.
It's only weird if you allow such things as appearance to grab your attention. I don't find it weird at all. I have no doubt that at some point in our future we'll meet an alien race built like that.

Yet most companies are under staffed with people reaching their hands out for government assistance so they don't have to sweat. This has been a very bad trend for the last few years and doesn't look like we will come out of it any time soon. Those that are being forced to go back to work, do as little as possible with bad attitudes. Sad state we have put ourselves in.

Matrix and terminator most likely. There would definitely need to be some other alternative for sustaining human life other than physical work. That being said, i highly doubt this planet has 100 years let alone 50 years of human life.
It would be something to see if someone could combine into one robot the agility and fluidity of the Boston dynamics (Chinese Firm) robot and the facial expressions of meta and the AI of Sophia.

Not really. If we can create things like that, then it shows there is nothing special or 'divine' about it.
And unless you are a creationist or a completely literal about humans, we started out as simple single cell organisms and not in the form we are today taking millions of years to evolve into what we are today.
