to me it does not matter if she wins or not. the chances are she will be nominated and that already is history making, the first woman of asian heritage to be nominated at the Oscars for a lead actress role
Minor correction here, Michelle Yeoh is not mumbling at 21:10, she is referencing Wong Kar-wai, one of the most incredible filmmakers of all time, director of In the Mood for Love (2000). Big thank you to those who subtitled this incredible interview and making it more accessible!
Michelle had a 15 year head start and was already a icon in the movie industry. Not to mention Michelle has had a huge diversity of roles that were never 'Oscar' worthy.
100%. I actually discovered this co-interview when I was writing a response to someone who was complaining that Blanchett lost the oscar to "that Asian movie woman" (FFS). I thought, I bet she's said something about her, did a quick search, and of course, they completely admire each other. They're legends.
I just love the fact that most Cate's interviews are a sort of "Cate, you're incredible" - "Ok, but you're fantastic" back and forth. I must say I LOVE the way Blanchett embraces her colleagues' talent and work.
Not sure if many people know, Michelle Yeoh did her own stunts in Jackie Chan's Police Story 3 - riding a motorbike onto the roof of a moving train in Kuala Lumpur. She's freaking amazing.
I think that's the one where Michelle and Jackie Chan kept trying to out-do each other with their stunts, until Jackie took her aside and said they had to stop before one of them got killed. Later, in an interview, Jackie said there were only two women in the world who scared him and one was Michelle Yeoh. _Jackie Chan_ said this. Respect. _("Scared" in the best possible way of course.)_
As a Malaysian, I'm happy Michelle won and I'm even happier to hear the Malaysian accent. Also very pleased she's being interviewed by Cate, who is my favourite actress.

I want Blanchett to win and honestly I’ve never heard of Michelle until this year but have heard of some of her films. She seems to be a gracious, lovely lady so I’d be more than happy for the GOAT, Cate the Great to share the honors with Michelle this year but one way or the other, I want cate to win for her legacy defining, beyond brilliant role in tar! 👏🏻👏🏻♥️♥️

Second the world would talk about it for years as they do now given their outstanding performances. Cate is undoubtedly the front-runner and a personal favorite [actor] of mine so i have to agree. I loved Blanchett analysis about Yeoh ability to perform, she mentioned a couple of times her ability to act without words and i couldn't agree more. There's this energy, this vibe from Michelle Yeoh that resonates power, and when she applies it in acting it's so damm good.
I'm interested in watching Tar after seeing this interview, er...conversation. I didn't even know of the movie, but after the glimpses of Tar's personality and then hearing the bit that she has acute hearing sensitivity and her parents are deaf, it's definitely an insight into the character's personality. It's really like witnessing the character's reflection of carrying the burden that afflicts them by their respective disability. It seems like the deaf would be absolute freedom and absolute creativity by having almost no reference, whereas Tar's would be the complete opposite, where you pick up the nuance of every.single.thing., so each note, each silent void, must have a purpose and precision to it so as to assuage her sensitivity. It seems rather extraordinary. I'll have to definitely look it up!
They’re two lauded performers holding space for each other, neither fighting for the limelight or an extra minute. There’s no ego, it’s just so beautiful and such a great example of their legacy and experience

Michelle's wisdom and experience is so palpable in the way she articulates and expresses herself. Such a graceful and eloquent woman with massive amounts of talent!
i'm in awe of these women. they're so deep in their respective careers and still delivering their career best performances. EEAAO and tar are two of the finest pieces of cinema. they both deserve oscars for their roles. i would love to see both of them in a movie together.

Michelle Yeoh is a legend, an Icon, my forever favorite actress. So nice that she’s being recognized for her acting now not just because she can kick butts. She’s also genuinely a good person.
I was lucky enough to meet both Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh at separate screenings of their movies. They really are as amazing, kind, intelligent, and generous as they are in this video. They both give you their full attention and engagement and are truly gracious women. I wish they could both win the Oscar this year but if I have to choose, I am rooting for Michelle.
I can listen to Cate talking forever. I mean she is gorgeous to look at but that is the least important part of her charm lol She is so attentive, well versed in the topic and ask sensible questions. She has genuine interest (or at least appears to have genuine interest) in the other person and is fully engaged in communicating with whoever she is speaking with. I love her so much. Thank you Variety for uploading this gem of the two legends!
To watch and listen to these two iconic, gorgeously beautiful and intelligent conversationalists was such a treat. I LOVE how they both raised each other up and their individual and collective energies was a delight to be witness to.
This pair's conversation was like a symphony , there I was sitting mesmerized, drawn in depth as they exchange their perspectives. The artistry and core understanding of these thespians' craft ,the way they decoded every detail of their work (previous and current) especially the conception and meaning of their character and pre- production is insane!! There is more to films than just the story ,the characters and the production , there is an audience. Can the audience see themselves in you as the character? Does the story have any relation to real people's realities and struggles whether past ,present or future ? What is the purpose of the Fantasy or Drama or Comedy or any other genre of your story, did you have the audience in mind? I am finding these questions answered in this conversation. We think we watch films just for entertainment , boredom and so on but beyond that, we consume, there is a transference! We are the most important part and thespians who understand that assignment must be appreciated.
@Variety, the "Michelle mumbles" transcription at 21:10 is actually her saying director Wong Kar Wai's name, he directed the film In The Mood for Love which she mentions. This is a very wonderful conversation between two masters of acting.
Love these 2 actresses. They embody beauty, class, elegance, eloquence, magnificence, gracefulness, humility, the list goes on, to the fullest. This was beautiful to watch. Much respect to these 2 legendary women! 🤟

Blanchett has won on "Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards", "New York Film Critics Circle Awards". It's not yet in the bag for Michelle. But one of these ladies will absolutely win it.
Can you give me A Chance for Work I Care you always
to me it does not matter if she wins or not. the chances are she will be nominated and that already is history making, the first woman of asian heritage to be nominated at the Oscars for a lead actress role
I cried like a baby at the climax of EEAAO. Such great performances from everyone, especially Michelle Yeoh
seeing this beautiful conversation and knowing one of these two incredible actors will soon bag the Best Actress trophy is extremely satisfying
Yes, it MUST be one of these two 🙏

Minor correction here, Michelle Yeoh is not mumbling at 21:10, she is referencing Wong Kar-wai, one of the most incredible filmmakers of all time, director of In the Mood for Love (2000). Big thank you to those who subtitled this incredible interview and making it more accessible!
2046 is a masterpiece! loved that movie so much
Great correction! Definitely an oversight so I hope they get to fix it soon :)
Also at 37:05 she said O levels not 'all levels'
In the Mood for Love made me fall in love with movies. Its so beautiful, words can't do it justice.
In the Mood for Love is an otherworldly movie on so many levels!
I love Cate fangirling out at Michelle so hard. What a fantastic pairing. I’d love to see them in a film together
Michelle had a 15 year head start and was already a icon in the movie industry. Not to mention Michelle has had a huge diversity of roles that were never 'Oscar' worthy.
@@cim888 your point ?
@@niraxlevi9930 It's pretty obvious.
I must say I LOVE the way Blanchett embraces her colleagues' talent and work.
this is just 40 minutes and 46 seconds of cate blanchett and michelle yeoh fangirling over each other
Not sure if many people know, Michelle Yeoh did her own stunts in Jackie Chan's Police Story 3 - riding a motorbike onto the roof of a moving train in Kuala Lumpur. She's freaking amazing.
She’s comfy acting in her country’s own soil 😁
She is amazing! It’s Police Story 3 you’re thinking of though 😉
That’s when I first discovered her. I was 12 and have followed her movies since.
Not only did her own stunts, but made Jackie Chan feel like he had to step up his own game, which not many people can do.
As a Malaysian I’m so happy and proud of Michelle’s achievements! Cate is an incredibly talented and beautiful actress!

She seems to be a gracious, lovely lady so I’d be more than happy for the GOAT, Cate the Great to share the honors with Michelle this year but one way or the other, I want cate to win for her legacy defining, beyond brilliant role in tar! 👏🏻👏🏻♥️♥️
@@PersepolisPF it would be an iconic moment at the oscars if they both won ngl. First off they would make history each for different reason. Second the world would talk about it for years as they do now given their outstanding performances. Cate is undoubtedly the front-runner and a personal favorite [actor] of mine so i have to agree. They have to share it idc
Well done, Variety, for getting these amazing women in conversation and community.
I loved Blanchett analysis about Yeoh ability to perform, she mentioned a couple of times her ability to act without words and i couldn't agree more. There's this energy, this vibe from Michelle Yeoh that resonates power, and when she applies it in acting it's so damm good.
With pride, she announces her 60th year. In spite of her age, she is still energetic, attractive, and capable of beating anyone in the film industry
That bit about Tar's parents being deaf just added so much more layer to the character. Brilliant!
Especially in contrast to her acute hearing, not even just normal. Two extreme ends of the hearing spectrum.
Seeing Michelle Yeoh in "CROUCHING TIGER/HIDDEN DRAGON" in 2001 and Cate Blanchett in "ELIZABETH" in 1998 were among the most incredible cinematic experiences for me.
The acting is great in crouching tiger but the wireworks was too much, i ended up hating the movie.

Cate Blanchett referencing Yes Madam is absolutely amazing.
It's the way each one keeps answering with more compliments and awe and deep respect towards the other. Two great women.
I can listen to Cate talking forever. I mean she is gorgeous to look at but that is the least important part of her charm lol
She is so attentive, well versed in the topic and ask sensible questions. She has genuine interest (or at least appears to have genuine interest) in the other person and is fully engaged in communicating with whoever she is speaking with. I love her so much.

I love this woman so much
To watch and listen to these two iconic, gorgeously beautiful and intelligent conversationalists was such a treat.
