  • In this Mailchimp quick tip, I'm talking about differences in email bounces - hard vs. soft. Your first question, if you're not familiar with email delivery, is, what the heck is a bounce? Well, a bounce means that there is some reason why your email did not go to that email address. Now what's the bad thing about bounces? The higher your bounce rate is, the more it negatively impacts your sender's reputation.
So what's the difference between a soft and hard bounce? A soft bounce means that the email that you send to that email address is experiencing a temporary issue, such as the inbox is full. A hard bounce means that there is a permanent reason why your email was not delivered to that email address, and the classic example is that the email address does not exist.
Hard bounces are automatically cleaned from your audience list. Soft bounces, you get seven tries, and after the seventh try, with no contact activity, Mailchimp will then go and say this is hard bounce and clean that.
