    Because I didn't have the money to go buy any carb clean I had a bottle of vinegar in the house and some Ziploc baggies so I filled the ziplock baggie up with vinegar and put the carburetor in there and let it soak for a day it did pretty good but there was still some gummed up stuff but I got it out and then that solenoid was gummed up too I took my torch and heated it up and then sprayed some wda 40 on it and smacked it on the vise a couple times and did what you said with the negative and positive cables and it started working just thought I'd share that took me a few days but you got her going thank you again man helped a lot

    I gave up trying to get jets out a lo9ng time ago. I just LAY the carb spray to it;s hide several times and then put the air compressor after it. Several times with that whole deal is usually enough for them to run and do like you said and the engine will clean everything up. And the best thing I did for the 1/2 VW Vanguard 20 horse was get a fully adjustable carb off Ebay. It runs steady now without surging or have the choke partway out. Thanks a lot for this. The linkages and the Vanguard are a lot similar! Watch out for the crickets and pick me one!

    Those Vanguards are great engines, great video! I recently bought 2 big Briggs single cylinder horizontal shaft flat head engines for a steal, one is a 16 HP single cylinder cast iron engine, cast iron block and it weighs a ton. The other is an 11 HP and it's an aluminum block, both engines have electric start. I got the 16 HP running by just cleaning and rebuilding the carb, cleaning the points, etc and it runs like a champ. The 11 HP had a stuck valve, the exhaust valve was stuck open. Keep up the great work!

    I have one of these engines, I picked it up last summer for $110. It was flooding at the scene. So I know the carb floods over. I haven't got around to fixing it yet because I haven't needed it. I had the opportunity to get a 20hp for $200 kick myself that I didn't, these are expensive engines. This video will help when I finally tackle it.

    Very good info. I ran across this researching while working on a '07 Toro Sand Pro, with almost 1200 hrs. Basically a riding, 3 wheeled rake for golf course bunkers. It has the Vanguard V twin engine, (not sure what HP) almost exactly like the ones you feature, except the valve adjustment is different. The valve cover bolts (2) screw into the center of the rocker arm, and adjustment is made at the top of the rocker arm. Its been doing all three things you mentioned about acting like a weak battery when starting, backfiring, and surging, or "huntin'" we call it, at idle. I have made all the adjustments like you showed, now on my way out to buy a set of spark plugs. I hope to fire it up first thing tomorrow. My question is, what is the almost triangle shaped cover thing that sits down in the valley pan, one bolt right in the center of it, just in front of the governor? It has a 90 degree hose, from almost the top of the carb going into it. A breather maybe? Could it be clogged, and is there anything I might have missed, in addition to your adjustments trying to fix these three issues? Thanks!

    I’ve got a vanguard 16 that’s a gravity fed the gas tanks on top carburetor spotless I took it apart I cleaned it it runs perfect and ideal spot on it revs everything is great issue is when I shut it off I come back the next day and the gas has flooded and has drained out all over the ground.Unfortunately mine does not have the solenoid to shut the fuel off so it relies solely on a Float needle to seal.And looking at all the diagrams it appears that because mines a gravity fed it has an aluminum needle it has a rubber tip and it rubber tip is supposed to see inside of the brass pressed and see from the carburetor that is non-removable non-replaceable and that’s supposed to seal off fuel flow.So my question to you is how do you adjust the float level height so that the fuel gets shut off sooner and that way mine will not flood.I know there’s that little metal tab on the float which way do you bend it how much do you bend it and is there a way to test it with the carburetor cover removed so that you don’t have to play trial and error every single time and strip the top half of the engine down in order to get to removing the carburetor cover.

    I have a question. I am having a similar v-twin with out fuel pump. I am having a back feed of fuel coming out of my vent with excessive fuel dripping from my exhaust pipe. I assume this is a jet or float issue in the carburetor. Have you seen this before? Love your work it is greatly appreciated.

    Sir. I have this very engine and attempted a carb clean. Reason being I was having some rough starting issues. She needed open choke and throttle to really fire up. After the clean she starts really well, but now cuts out on idle. Do have any suggestions for what might be the issue here? Thanks in advance!

    I’ve got a 16 hp vanguard it has very little use it probably is 20 hours in the past 20 years it’s a gravity fed fuel system I’ve clean the carburetor it starts up and idles fine it performs well the issue is when I shut it off fuel is somehow getting by and Hydro locking into the cylinders even if I manually shut off the fuel flow from the tank the fuel bowl on these models is very large as you can Seeing your picture and that fuel is leaking past I’ve already replaced the needle so my question to you is how do I adjust the float level you mentioned that you can bend that tab if I want to reduce the amount of fuel that’s getting into the bowl which direction do I bend it

    • @paulkruegee6205
      @paulkruegee6205 3 года назад

    • @paulkruegee6205

      I took it apart again this morning I remove the needle I polished the little cylinder that the needle goes in because there’s a little bit of residue in there and I figured maybe it’s getting needles getting hung up on some of the residue I polish that cleaned it out put it together starts right up you shut it off if you don’t turn the fuel off because it’s gravity feed it feels a cylinder I use the new needle this time again and it still will not seal I am at my wits end.

    I have exact carburetor which came with a 2019 vanguard engine. The engine hunts, even after taking carb top off and cleaning both top jets, it still hunts, then I bought a new carb, and it has a adjustable bronze mixture screw like you show on yours, but the original 2019 carb where that screw is has a piece of metal inside the hole. Have you ever taken that metal out to see if a screw is behind it? Reason I ask is I think that adjustment may be blocked and possibly causing my bad idle condition.

      Same problem here, my float was stuck. Also, when he pulled up the floats and showed the pin that can be adjusted... i suspect mine is dirty, because it still leaks some after getting the floats un-stuck. If it's gravity feed fuel, but in a shutoff valve.... saves gas. (Another question like this was answered, here is his answer: " First thing i'd check is the needle valve/seat and/or the float, if its sticking letting it flood out it will do that. "
