Really appreciate your breakdown of the research. So sad that those poor animals are forced to endure such pointless testing (aka torment and torture). But as you said, it's important to understand what type of testing/reseasrch was done and how that translates to the results.
I'm glad I came across this particular post. You're absolutely correct about Titanium Oxide. My background is in Chemistry and since my college years I was puzzled as to how research took place. I landed in the field of research for the simple reason of being frustrated as to how studies went about. Your point on Titanium brings back my research on Saccharin, studies done on lab rats were exposed to this substance in numbers, humans would never consume in a lifetime which brought cancerous results, well duh, of course it would. I wonder how many people know that to much broccoli could cause cancer, of course, you'd have to consume 21 large heads of broccoli in one sitting, 14 times within a one week span, can you imagine this being done then stating broccoli causes cancer. The U.S. needs an overhaul in research ethics. Anyway, I became a patron here some time ago, never took the time to sit with you (sorry for that, life is busy) you're work ethic is stunningly professional, hats off to you Marie!!
Yay! Love this video. I purchased your book in December and now have about $200 worth of ingredients in my shopping cart on tkb trading' website. I keep going back and making adjustments trying to decide what is most important to get first. This video is super helpful and I'm looking forward to more on this subject. Also, as a soap maker I have used zinc oxide as a whitener and it is too large of a micron size and adds a bit of scratching effect to the soap. If too much is used it will even affect the soap's hardness and cause it to dissolve unevenly or break (maybe more water is needed?). I quit using it and switched to white kaolin to whiten soap and even though it is not as white as titanium dioxide would be, it works for my purposes. Thanks!
Ah, interesting feedback on the soap! I have only ever used ZO sparingly in soap as I started using TD and have mostly just kept to that. It's good to hear from someone who has experimented more than I have!
Jinal〈3 LOL!! You just described my day 😂👍 So happy I found your channel and blog, @humblebee&me! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us! ❤️
I just found your channel and I absolutely love it! Such a perfect blend of all natural paired with science and research. So many "all natural" promoters don't realize that just because it's natural, doesn't mean it's good for you. Also, I had an allergic reaction to arrowroot powder during a diy test, so patch tests are important before smearing it all over the face! (like I did...) 😂

Love this video. Fabulous to see the powders and differences. Especially enjoyed the sericite mica section. I was like, "Me! I made the airbrush powder! I did." 😁
Found your channel because i wanted to make my own lipgloss and came across your channel. I needed a white lip liquid pigment. Tried titanium dioxide with castor oil but ended up with lotsah bubbles 😅 im going to binge watch your videos! Perfect time as well.
Marie, thank you for this important explanation, yes I have been worried about titanium dioxide, won´t be anymore, and what a good lesson on the different powders you usually use, thanks again
Great video! It was very informative seeing the different powders compared side by side. I like your sensible response to the "isn't titanium dioxide a carcinogen?!?" question, too. Thanks for sharing Marie!

I really think silica microspheres is under used with DIYers. It's a magnificent ingredient!! Love it!! You should dedicate 1 solid video about this powder!!
Great demonstration! I was hoping you'd mention the use and roles of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in diy sunscreens and foundations (sun protection properties). Keep up the excellent work :)

Animal testing is not very accurate due to the fact that humans have a different genetic make up to rats and mice and rabbits what may be harmful to certain animals species isn’t necessarily harmful to human. What can you add to mineral loose powders to have it more slip or it to be smoother? And is there also you can add so that loose powder would be more adhesive on your skin 😊

brooke Harrod limesandcoconuts11 FINALLY other people!! A day or two after application I break out into red bumps everywhere, my skin gets tight, dry, itchy, and a burning sensation. Is it the same for you guys?
I wonder what you think of French green clay for body powder? I am trying to create a recipe for body powder and I am stuck. Any advice would be great. Thanks so much
It can be when properly formulated with, but not when used by amateurs like us :) I've written an entire post on this here: www.humblebeeandme.com/why-homemade-sunscreen-is-never-a-good-idea/
I genuinely mean "most skin tones"; the setting powder I developed for my book that features some of those ingredients worked well with all the WOC I tested it with ❤️ Overall formulation + concentration is important. Happy making!
Great Video! but i have a question, when you said titanium dioxide is actually do better than zinc oxide, i was wondering how about the protection and Anti-inflammatory function? I have made once nappy cream with zinc oxide for my baby girl back 3 years ago and it worked so well. I always though TD only for physical sun block and yes cosmetic lol (sorry im not that familiar with TD) Also, there are lots of cream, especially nappy cream, the main active ingredient is zinc oxide, i have seen one up to 10% (medical treated of cuz). May I know what's your opinion on this?
TD is more useful than ZO in makeup; if you're making a diaper cream you need to use ZO :) You can learn more in the Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/)!
Do you use Titanium Dioxide in anatase or rutile form? Also, for mineral makeup, do you prefer coated or uncoated titanium dioxide, and if coated, what coating do you think is best (aka, least offending) to skin? Thanks for the great info!
Thanks! I too prefer the anatase form! Do you mind sharing from where you purchase your anatase TD? The only place that I've found the specifies an anatase form is tbktrading, but I was wondering if you knew of any other places that offer it? And as far as the Zinc Oxide goes, do you prefer a high or low micron/particle size (coated or uncoated). There's so many recipes on the internet, but so few really specify the exact ingredient that was used and I find that it really can "make or break" a recipe/batch... Thanks so much!
In theory, yes, but I'm not sure if you'd notice the impact on your body (as opposed to faces, which have more pores than the rest of our body). You might prefer to add a starch, which will reduce the oiliness and is less expensive :)
Hi Marie! I'm new here and loving your content - so much that I got your ebook a few days ago and have just dove in enjoying it so much! I do have a question though - I'm reading that titanium dioxide is known to accelerate skin aging by producing free radicals - do you know whether this is true for non-nano titanium dioxide as well?
Hi Anette! When I hear a claim like that, one of the first things I want to know is if the claim is backed up by actual, relevant studies, or if it's a theoretical thing that could happen under certain specific circumstances (that may or may not be relevant to actual use of the ingredient). For instance, you might've read that you should never ever touch bentonite clay with metal due to ion exchange. I asked an expert, and he explained that this is unlikely to happen in a meaningful or damaging way in the way that people use bentonite clay for skincare (www.humblebeeandme.com/bentonite-clay-and-diy-beauty/). I found this article interesting: www.sterlingminerals.com/does-titanium-dioxide-cause-free-radical-damage-to-skin/.
Hey! I will never DIY sunscreen and I would recommend that you don't, either. I've done a big post on why here :) www.humblebeeandme.com/why-homemade-sunscreen-is-never-a-good-idea/
Hi Marie .. I am currently using your recipe in your book for the mattifying powder but I still need a little more martifying due to super oily skin .. is it ok to use a little silica microsoheres into the formula for added oil absorption if so how much should I add for the recipe size you provide for in your book .. Also is maybe your airbrush powder a better base to use the silica microspheres as a finishing powder ..Thank you so much I am enjoying your book so much 😍
For the finishing powder I'd probably start by using silica instead of the calcium carbonate; just remember that you cannot put the microspheres through the blender or they'll lose their lovely feeling due to not being spheres anymore-mash everything together in a baggie instead! You can always add more as needed :) For the airbrushing powder I'd replace 1/4 of the sericite mica with the spheres and go from there :)
A big question that pops into my mind due to my skeptical nature is: aren't our eyes entrance doors to this compound? Because I apply sunscreens around them.
No; you'll find the answers you're looking for in the Humblebee & Me Encyclopedia at www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia. Simply look up the ingredients in question to learn about why they are used in formulas, what they do, usage rates, and more. Happy making!
I too would love to see Sun Screen. My daughter has gorgeous peaches and cream skin but gets a sun burn if she sits by a window too long. Traditional sun screen doesn't work on her and I worry about skin damage. Please Please help.
Jennifer Judd She said in another video that she won't make sunscreens because you can't ever know the true strength of a homemade one. Read the back of the store bought sunscreen, you need far more than you think and need to reapply far more often as well.
Mandas677 is right-DIY sunscreen is an AWFUL idea. Here's some further reading: formulabotanica.com/not-use-coconut-oil-sunscreen/, www.labmuffin.com/spf-changes-how-much-sunscreen-use/, www.humblebeeandme.com/my-thoughts-on-homemade-sunscreen/, swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.ca/2009/07/please-do-not-make-your-own-sunscreen.html. Please don't try it!
So, if I were to make foundation using kaolin clay as the base, do you think that would work reasonably well, or do I HAVE to have titanium dioxide? What kind of results do you think I would get?
I think you'd get a low coverage powder with poor adhesion, and judging by your profile photo, you'd have a hard time matching your complexion as you're quite fair. You are obviously welcome to try, though, and if you do I'd love to hear about your results!
Haha the lighting in that photo made me look really white. I have olive-toned skin and get super tan during the summer. That's what I was thinking: low coverage...I'd love to get some titanium dioxide, just gotta plan for it. (Now my mind is stuck on what you said...is it harder to match fair skin tones? Why? What do you use to pigment your foundations?) Also, would making it a cream foundation give it more adhesion?
Thank you! This is insanely helpful. I have a question about the titanium dioxide. TKB has Methicone Titanium Dioxide, Dimethicone Titanium Dioxide, Titanium Dioxide - Rutile, and Titanium Dioxide Oil. I was going to order a sample because it seemed like a lot of eyeshadows had titanium dioxide, but then I saw how many there were and I'm super confused and didn't buy any. It sounds like one of these you could add to a matte green and end up with a brighter green?
I've read that zinc oxide has sun screening properties. I use a uva/uvb sun lotion under makeup anyway but bottles usually say you have to reapply after a couple of hours. When I'm at work, this isn't doable so what about doing the lotion and then dusting my face with zinc oxide a few times throughout the day. Would that work?
Hello! I love your channel. Which ingredient would you recommend to use to help loose highlighters adhere to the skin? At the moment, Ive used 2 mica pigments and the product is disappearing on my skin. Also, it feels like of grainy.
Titanium dioxide, sericite mica, and kaolin clay will all aid with adhesion, as will magnesium stearate. You should check out my book! www.humblebeeandme.com/make-it-up-preorder/
I was mixing for my cosmetics and my mica pigment contains titanium dioxide and fell over my floor and myself it wasnt too much but it was a lot is this something i should be worried about?
Just wipe it off/up and that'll be fine. The thing you don't want to do is inhale large amounts of it, but that's extremely unpleasant so I can't imagine you'd do much of that by accident!
I wonder what you think of French green clay for body powder? I am trying to create a recipe for body powder and I am stuck. Any advice would be great. Thanks so much
I'd probably choose white kaolin so my powder wasn't green, but other than the colour it would be nice in a body powder.
where do you buy pigments for lipstick/ (vegan)
Sorry, hit send too soon!!
But hate the price. Any suggestions?
Thanks Carin
Thank you so much for these video. 🙂👌🏻
Thank you for watching!
Do you think you could mix the starch, mica, and clay to make a transparent setting powder?
Yup! There's a formulation in my book :)
@@HumblebeeAndMe Thanks!
Can you use TD to lighten up micas?
So helpful! thank you!

Isn't zing oxide a sun protectant? I would add it for only that reason. Are there better ingredients that work as sun protectants?
It can be when properly formulated with, but not when used by amateurs like us :) I've written an entire post on this here: www.humblebeeandme.com/why-homemade-sunscreen-is-never-a-good-idea/
Very helpful. Thank you.
Thanks so much for watching! :)
Can I mix titaniumdioxide in clear nail polish to make white polish?
Yup!
wonderful resource thank you.
Happy to help!
I'm guessing by "most skin tones" you mean most white skin tones? Or does it work on darker skin as well
I genuinely mean "most skin tones"; the setting powder I developed for my book that features some of those ingredients worked well with all the WOC I tested it with ❤️ Overall formulation + concentration is important. Happy making!
@@HumblebeeAndMe Glad to hear it! The phrase just got my hackles up, so glad to know it was informed and considered!
Great Video! but i have a question, when you said titanium dioxide is actually do better than zinc oxide, i was wondering how about the protection and
Anti-inflammatory function?
@@HumblebeeAndMe love your video!! and thanks so much! So this video mostly apply on make up products lol Thanks!
Do you use Titanium Dioxide in anatase or rutile form? Also, for mineral makeup, do you prefer coated or uncoated titanium dioxide, and if coated, what coating do you think is best (aka, least offending) to skin? Thanks for the great info!
I use anatase, uncoated, non-micronized, and that's what I'd recommend :)
Mine is from TKB Trading as well :) I typically get plain ol' high micron uncoated ZO.
would you be able to add sericite mica to a body butter to kind of take out some of the oiliness and defuse the light on your skin?
@@HumblebeeAndMe Thanks, Marie! Looks like Rutile appears to be the way to go....thank you so much for the link!
I love your videos!! Do you have a recipe for powdered sunscreen? I love Coloresceince sunforgettable,
Hey! I will never DIY sunscreen and I would recommend that you don't, either. I've done a big post on why here :) www.humblebeeandme.com/why-homemade-sunscreen-is-never-a-good-idea/
Where can I get pure iron oxide matte powders from for cheap?
Humblebee & Me Thank you so much 😘
Plz also make vid on.. how to make it easily at home!! I m waiting... plxx....
I'm in love wih your channel and your book! Serecite Mica, is it the same as magnesium serecite?
lol ignore the question I figured it out :)
A big question that pops into my mind due to my skeptical nature is: aren't our eyes entrance doors to this compound? Because I apply sunscreens around them.
Sorry... what? What does sunscreen have to do with anything?
Hi! Do you think it's safe to use just ZnO as a translucent powder? Thank you!
wow. thanks for your videos., love them matter of fact. your one awesome chick, whos knows her stuff. thanks so much...,
Thanks so much, Lori! Happy making :)
Will the Mica have the same airbrushing effect if put into lotion?
Yes :) www.humblebeeandme.com/airbrushing-creme-foundation/
Please make a video about how to make pan stick and pancake makeup..
I have a blog post on pressed makeup at this point :) Just search for it on my blog!

Are all of them water soluble?
Why? What do you use to pigment your foundations?)
Also, would making it a cream foundation give it more adhesion?
Can i add kaolin clay to make a base cream for make up
It can be part of a successful formula, yes.
I been using titanium dioxide for water in my lipgloss and it’s been separating a lot I don’t know should I use titanium dioxide for oil?
what do you mean for water
It sounds like one of these you could add to a matte green and end up with a brighter green?
dimethicone is a silicone. So that dioxide must have silicone in it.
Please give this a read: www.humblebeeandme.com/why-homemade-sunscreen-is-never-a-good-idea/. Thanks for DIYing with me, and happy making :)
@@HumblebeeAndMe Thank you!
So you can use cornstarch as a setting powder then?😳
You could, though it's a pretty low-rent one :P The one in my book offers much better oil control :) www.humblebeeandme.com/make-it-up-preorder/
Humblebee & Me thank you!!
such a helpful video!
I'm so glad! :)
Is zinc oxide used in creams

Do you have any recipes for powder that has an SPF factor?
No; www.humblebeeandme.com/why-homemade-sunscreen-is-never-a-good-idea/ 😊
Is titanium dioxide on contour bad?
Not necessarily; it would depend a lot on the skin tone of the person using it and the rest of the formulation.
