Whilst this Italian classic might look like it’s been immaculately cared for since it left the showroom, it actually has an interesting story to tell. This 1974 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS was stolen and buried in the garden of a house in South Central LA. Four years after its burial, it was discovered by some young kids who were playing and digging in their garden. The car was in a terrible state and was returned to the insurance company. Despite its condition, the car’s current owner Brad Howard bought it in the late 1970’s and had it restored to how it looked originally. Brad has no plans on selling his prized car, and said: “For a car that got painted over 40 years ago, it’s still holding up pretty good.”

It was an insurance scam. The guy bought the car saying it was for his wife & then reported that she left the keys in it when she went shopping & it was stolen.
He had an in ground pool that actually started out very shallow at just 1ft deep to start & then went to about 8 ft. He bought the house with the pool already there & never used/filled it.
Since the pool was so shallow at the entrance, he was able to make a short ramp in order to drive the car into the pool. He then covered the pool with the pool cover and then got a dump truck full of dirt to dump on top of the cover. He graded the dirt. Seeded it & soon it was covered in grass.
He then called his insurance company reporting it stolen. He collected the insurance money, he and his wife sold the house, and he was gone.
The next family that moved in never knew they had a pool buried in their back yard with a new Ferrari in it for years. One day, after a rare heavy rain, holes started to poke through the ground from rain erosion. The new owners kids noticed the holes and as any normal boys do, started playing & digging in the dirt
Well, they kept on digging & noticed it dropped down real deep. What happened was that the weight of the dirt on the pool cover caused the cover to collapse in spots. So the kids basically "dug a hole" straight to the bottom of the pool. Climbed down the hole & saw there was a car there! & They ran in and told their parents!
Like, "Hey Dad! Mom! There's a car buried in the back yard!!!!"

Of course the dad was very happy with his adventurous boys because he thought he could claim the car as his.
He tried contacting the previous owner of the house & he found out they left the country to either Spain or France.
So he thought the car was his for sure. When he tried to register the car in his name, the car came up as reported stolen and the cops came & told him that a tow truck was coming, along with someone from the Ferrari dealer, along with a rep from the insurance company.
When they all got to his house, he said the insurance agent & dealer assessed any damage to the car.
The insurance agent then told the home owner that they were hiring an excavation company to remove the dirt & they (insurance company)would retrieve the car.
The home owner tried to stop them & said basically, "this is my house & my property. I don't want anybody digging up that dirt"
The cops said that since it was stolen property, it doesn't matter whos property it was. So the insurance company went ahead & got the dirt removed.
The next day, the Tow truck driver, the Ferrari dealer & the insurance agent showed up at his house to get the car. The tow truck driver took the keys & the car didn't start. The dealer not only came with duplicate Ferrari keys, but also a car battery figuring the car wouldn't start after so many years. The Tow guy replaces battery. Starts the car. Backs it up the pool ramp & the home owner said 2 tires were flat so the tow guy slowly drove it to his truck. Hooked it up & the tow truck, dealer & insurance agent all drove off.
The insurance company then put the car up for sale at auction & that's how this guy got the chance to buy it.

At least the owner now knows he has an in ground pool in his yard & one of the greatest stories to tell people at parties by that very pool.
Makes you wonder how many other cars are just buried beneath the ground.

I want to know did the value go up or down because of its history? Is it iconic as the Ferrari that was underground.
actually it wasn't kids who found it but a CI tipped off the police and they cooked up this story to protect the CI's identity. Learnt this from Stuff you should know podcast, great episode, they talk about another Ferrari being buried!

Cops investigated him to the MAX and found no wrongdoing by the first owner , genius. He was a family man , a business man , and definitely NOT. living paycheck to paycheck.
