Local wisdom is something that has sadly lost it's way in our modern fast paced society. Where we live in Costa Rica is commonly referred to as the "campo", which would be roughly translated to the countryside. Small farms, community support, trade economy, knowledge sharing are all things that still exist in these little villages that have somehow been lost in time. The street we live on didn't even have electricity until 1995. I feel very fortunate to still be able to visit neighbors and receive local wisdom that has been passed down through generations of farmers. When we first arrived in Costa Rica 10 years ago, I was so excited to share all my "permaculture knowledge" I had learned from courses and books... with a little bit of real experience here and there. I have really come to appreciate the local ways and to realize many of these people have been doing "permaculture" before I was born and that they learned these techniques from their Grandfathers and Grandmothers. We are very fortunate to have this opportunity to make a video with one of the most amazing permaculturist I know. Francis has been working with us since we moved here and I have learned so much from him. We will continue to create videos on local hero's like Francis, and hopefully be able to support the continuation of the age old tradition of passing on wisdom from one generation to the next.

Such a beautiful and amazing place! Thanks for sharing this with us. :)
Awesome video.. as a Costa Rican, born and raised in the country side, I really appreciate the way you present this alternative lifestyle!
That soil looks great. I love seeing permaculture in use in other countries. Interesting systems he has going on there.
Nice rich black soil is fairly rare in the tropics. ..we are lucky to have it at our EcoOasis property! What I LOVE about permaculture is one is always learning and adapting what one learns to their situation. Thank you for your comment and watching our Permaculture Homestead tour video!(-:
Brendon,
This is one of the best agroforestry projects I've seen. I've been growing rice in Rhode Island, USA on the Bluegrass Sustainable Agriculture Project in a small food forest. This exhibition by Francis' valid lifestyle. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share with us.
Thanks for the kind words wilderness walker, I'm glad you enjoyed the videos. Yes, the agroforestry project has come together very nicely, I am excited to interact with it as it grows....and already so much food popping out in only a 2 1/2 year system. We will be doing a series on our agroforestry system soon...stay tuned.

How are things going ? I am finally able to visit Costa Rica soon. Any advice or suggestions for a single 57 year old man to visit eco villages with permaculture inspired practices?
Great video.

The botanical name for the purple flowers discussed at 3:37 are Impatiens hawkeri :)
Thanks Mike!(-:
Eco Oasis Thank you Mike. I was wondering what the name in English was. Do you know if this is just a tropical flower? I'm wondering if I can plant this in the states???
It's definitely in the states! Very Common!
Thank you Mike. I will have to locate me some.
Love it!!! Where do I sign up! Mi sueño es vivir así!!!
Please leave a comment on any future video you want us to produce! Thank you for watching.
Did you say "Ganea" ?? They look like a xi between banana and plantain and are sweet like pumkin pie when black and fully ripe! I freeze them and add to smoothies.. Havent tried cooking them but I gues that would be good too! Keep up the awesome work protecting the natural way!
i think my next eco tourism vacation will have to be to costa rica. I will work for housing lol !
Let us know when you are headed this way...we may be able to help you out!(-: I accidentally erased your message from our last video. Can you repost your comment? Come on down Joseph!(-: Thanks for watching...good to know you LOVE our video!
I guess I will keep plugging away one summer at a time.
The sancoya reminds me of jackfruit
wonderful homsteading but needs alot of hard work thanks for uploading the video.
+waqar ayaz Yes but this is a persons living so I assume it's not much different to having a job. Everything is supplied that is needed to live and surplus food can be sold.
Also, permaculture is set up to be the least amount of work as possible.. Most of the work is in the beginning, after that it's nowhere near as labour intensive.
lea perrins yes you are right and i think homesteading is more better than having a job because you have alot of free time to interact with nature and eating organic foods makes you healthy
+waqar ayaz Definitely! I plan to do this in seven to ten years when I have the money to buy land. I just wish I could do it now!
lea perrins yes you should do this because nothing is better than homesteading.
I think that was a Glass Frog, no?
The frog is real. Thank you for your comment Perma Torus.
Eco Oasis No, there is a species called Glass Frag that is very small and almost completely transparent. The pattern on the back is the same as the eggs when they hang on the leaves. The frog appears on the "Planet Earth 2" Documentary by BBC with David Attenborough
much Love, thanks for sharing. Is the Water Kress or Naturtium officinale or Apium nodiflorum? They are very similar, but the latter tastes like carrot.
Aho, hermano, all the best :::)
Right on Perma Torus!
