I think Selena as a TR is exciting for a couple reasons! One, a lot of TRs have such a hard time dressing casually, and I think Selena’s style can be an inspiration to those who don’t feel they like the clothes recommended for their type. Two, I see this as more evidence that dressing according to your essence might be more important than sticking to your lines. The confusion that a lot of people feel seems to be because she dresses (and looks comfortable/great) in SN lines which correlates to more Left/Down energy. I think Left/Down energy and TR stereotypical essence described by Kibbe are hard to reconcile… or at least they have been :) And again, that’s important to explore how essence AND your physical self combine to create your own individual style. Can you imagine Selena dressing with pure TR clothes/ lines all the time? I feel like she wouldn’t be herself. Lastly, I think this can help everybody chill with Kibbe’s rules… I think Selena’s ID is helping keep people humble and encourage those who are newer to Kibbe that there is a lot of nuance to typing and that what makes it fun! It’s ok if you don’t 100% vibe with what your type is recommended to wear.
You’re right! And I feel that it also applies for Taylor Swift. She is a Kibbe dramatic, but in my opinion she looks at her best wearing her Right+Down essence outfits. I guess that’s why some people are confused and think that she’s a gamine instead. (Sorry if I wrote something wrong, I’m still learning english).
As a theatrical romantic myself, I can say that even the outfits that don't look TR have A LOT of TR lines and elements and are quite waist emphasizing.
I can relate a bit to Selena - I have elongation in my body, but feel "puffy" or "fleshy" at any weight. SD scaled silhouettes overpower my face, and TR ornateness looks outdated and costumey on me. So I like how Selena styles her clothes with soft fabrics that show the curve of the body, with a touch of sharpness somewhere (pointed shoes, sunglasses, or sharply styled hair). She also looks so good in dewy, shimmery, fresh makeup. Edit: Watching the Vogue "Selena Gomez Breaks Down 15 Looks From 2007 to Now." So interesting to watch after this discussion!
I admit that I never saw width or bluntness in Selena Gomez, but I was certain she was SN because of her ability to pull off relaxed clothes, oversized sweaters and messy buns so flawlessly. I love flowy unstructured clothes on her. I was under the impression that a TR would be drowned by excess fabric and lack of structure.
Actually as long as we play it safe playing against our lines looks amazing on us, im a TR and I loooove dressing in messy outfits and honestly I pull it off mainly cuz my hair is just naturally messy
This make total sense to me ! She definitely has that TR look. Her strong yang undercurrent is less noticeable under her yin overlay. But it’s there ! Her bone structure Her shoulders Her arms & legs I think people miss it, because they think of a few celebs when they think of a type (TR: salma, jada, mila) But the system is not about thinking of a person, to compare another person to ! We are making the assessment based on the measures! I think this is the secret to having a good eye 👁 Getting out of that comparative world view. Also I think it’s so funny that people want to challenge the view of the man who made his own system 😂😂 Anyways as a TR, this news hasn’t surprised me.
I gotta admit I do think this confused people because of individual taste. I think Selena used to dress more TR when she was younger and experimented with other trendier lines as she aged, and I think she looks way more cleaned up in the TR lines. Looking at the pics in this video of her in more N or DC lines, I think she looks so unpolished, and oftentimes it looks more like the clothes are wearing her. When she’s in thinner fabric with light waist emphasis, she looks so cleaned up and natural. Compare her in the C&GI video to these looks. I’ve been compared to Mila Kunis and Selena Gomez, so I understand why people think they look similar. It’s the tiny sharp facial bones. They’ve got round faces but lightly defined eyes, noses, and cheeks. This helps me see exactly what TR is supposed to be, and I can now accept that I fall into that category. Kibbe officially feels like one of those systems where they more you learn the less you understand though lol. I thought she looked TR when I first learned of the system but became convinced otherwise the further along I researched.
Toss a grenade in the room and leave, Mr.Kibbe! I feel the frustration every student feels when a brilliant mind is not a brilliant teacher --- or doesn't want to be. However ... it just makes me want to see more of *your* essence system. (I'm waiting for casual trendy FN outfits now that *everything* seems to be waist emphasis ---- and I can't even find my waist lol) I adore your essence system and am having fun finding my place in it. Keep your content coming!
Dude, this makes me so happy. When I go to forums and stuff, it made me feel like I'm an idiot. It made me question myself. This feels like a breath of fresh air. Yin is sometimes hard to pick up if you do not see them in person. I think that's why even on the forums, blatant yin features are being seen as yang because of distorting, lighting, and camera adding 10 pounds. I will stick to what I knew I was.
It always felt a bit off that so many people assumed Selena was a SN just because she suited long/looser silhouettes. Mila Kunis and Selena look nothing alike to me, but I was also moderately surprised about her being a TR. I think there's a stereotype with Rs being built like Beyonce/Marilyn and TRs being like Selma Hayek. Taylor Swift used to confuse people by looking amazing in Gamine lines even though she looks most like a Dramatic to me... but with weight gain/loss, angles and not seeing people in person to know their real verticle line etc - it's difficult to type. TRs are probably undertyped often.
I’m pretty sure I’m a Theatrical Romantic. I’m super excited to have her a part of the Fam. Especially since she is so modern and stylish. The recommendations for TR is something soooooo far from everything I’ve ever done. I’ve been slowly trying to incorporate more feminine things and be comfortable with it. When I was younger (20’s) I honestly felt like I could wear anything and just rock it. It all looked good. I naturally followed more gamine or natural lines because I thought they looked cool. But even then I knew it wasn’t my BEST. I’m pretty sure that’s Selina. She’s beautiful and young and can wear anything she wants and look great! I never saw her as natural though. In fact she is what confused me into questioning whether I could be natural, but the description just seemed too far from me.
Ooh, this is so interesting to me (a Kibbe casual who really knows nothing tbh). I never felt like Selena fit the Natural category personally; I thought Natural lines kinda dulled her shine and sometimes overwhelmed her? But I assumed it must be the fact that I don't tend to "like" typical Natural lines myself (even though I think I am FN or SN), and just assumed that I don't have the "eye" for Kibbe the way others do. So this makes sense to me now and I feel I can really see a TR when I look at her. And AFAIK, David and his wife are both TRs so. It seems a lot of people see her firmly as a Natural though, which I think is so interesting; the whole Kibbe system is just so fun, how we all get different impressions and can discuss and compare what we see is so cool to me. Sorry, I'm just rambling, but also thank you Rita for having such a fun positive channel and reigniting my love for fashion/Kibbe/essence/all the things!
As someone pretty new to Kibbe but feeling pretty sure I may be a TR, Selena’s ID doesn’t shock me at all. The outfits you showed around the 10:30-11:00 marks definitely had waist definition. Almost all the outfits you showed did, even just tucking in the shirt defines her waist. The denim jumpsuit had a understated band right at the waist and I gave her more shape. I definitely see TR in Selena. I don’t care for baggier stuff but that’s just my personal preference 😅 she makes it work by subtly defining the waist as mentioned above. Also she’s thin, so she can get away with “breaking” the rules a little bit more than other TR with more meat on their bones. Thanks for going in depth and helping a newbie gain some perspective!
Well I think it's one of those things where it makes sense once you know! Before Selena was typed, among all the Kibbe "experts" it was all like "all Kibbe types can have waist definition, that's not the same thing as Kibbe curve!" Anyway she is a great TR example, welcome and glad to have you here!
I think with Selena Gomez being a TR and the singer HER being a R it goes to show that super yin body types can rock oversized clothing very well and it’s broadens the scope of how we think who should wear what
Selena always wears Natural lines which is why I always find there is something missing in her style, but now I totally understand why. I wonder how she would look with the TR recommendations. Actually, she resembles Priyanka Chopra who is SD. and there are many similarities between TR & SD in the vibe.
I didn't spend any time trying to type Selena, but as an R who is also left-down I feel like "oh yeah, totally TR for her," so, whatever that's worth haha. maybe she can carry the more "yang" looks because of the yang in her that makes her TR and not R? I dunno, I really don't spend a lot of time thinking about celebs hahaha. I agree with your criticism of the way david's content is presented online right now-- I was personally sort of appalled that the way you access his content is via permalinks to facebook posts?? lol, like don't they have enough money to pay someone to make them a nice website? that is very, very silly and more than a little embarrassing for them, IMO. I would definitely pay for a course, too! I think a lot of people would. or another book? something haha.
They don't have money to pay for a nice website as their online stuff is completely free and generates no income besides consults. I wish they would start selling something so they could use the profits to improve the online info.
What were the height limits for TR in David’s book? I thought maybe that’s where people got the idea TRs were petite - Selena usually appears to me to be super tall, but maybe that’s just because of her tiny head.
I definitely see her visual yang, that always threw me off. Even next to people her height or maybe an inch or two shorter, she looks so tall to me (like when she's next to Demi Lovato). Granted, I'm a 5'4 SN. And tbh DC still makes more sense to me. Most DCs aren't tall, but don't look particularly petite. Short/small details on her really don't highlight the best in her, and that's a core part of the R and TR identities. So that's confusing to me. I don't agree with a lot of the internet that's she's an SN. I'm not sure I agree with TR, either. 🙃
I think continuing the system in your own eyes is a good idea. There is a lot of gate keeping in EVERY community, but especially this one. Mcjimsey, Northrop, and who knows who else all made valid contributions, and kibbe continues to make his own valid contributions, but your take and your perspective add to the conversation and enrich the discussion. I love your take on kibbe and I also love your inclusion of other content. To me, between you and Aly Art, there is a much needed refreshment to a wonderful system that can feel gate kept, discouraging, and stale. You guys bring back the fun and the joy to the system.
Really interesting, I do see it. I agree she threw people off by never wearing TR style. Her youthful vibe along with the stylist she hires is what is making her wear other kinds of styles and making it work on her.
great to see your take + how you handle being proven "wrong," lol. I feel like her face does make more sense with TR than DC but I also wouldn't have typed her that way because David says not to go by the face and just look at the body. it seems like a lot of his Rs and TRs actually have conventionally "subtle" curve but do have small circles in their bodies that look really nice in waist emphasis and yin styling? but I definitely do see Selena as having longish-arms and a look where I did see vertical in her, and I would've thought that was more yang than a TR has. very interesting stuff! not something I plan to obsess over though :)
I never would have guessed TR for Selena, but I was never team natural either. In the promo material for the movie Spring Breakers she's in a bikini next to Ashley Benson and Vanessa Huddgens. Those girls I'm pretty certain are smaller than her, but they just have stronger frames. So the TR thing has just made me go, okay. Selena is a great case study for your system though, as she's what happens when a 'fancy' type is Left Down at heart.
Honestly, watching the outfits you chose in this video, this revelation feels a bit like an "ah-ha moment" for me, which is definitely not always the case. I never would've guessed based on pictures of her, but I do see the ways in which TR style guidelines suit her. I wonder if part of the difficulty with Selena is that she, like almost all of the modern celebrities we see, is so sculpted by personal training and extensive efforts to be slim?
This video was super fun. In the end, even though she doesn’t look like other TR, I’d agree with this solely based on the fact that she has a pure yin face in my opinion, and it’s very romantic looking to the point of being almost baby angelic like, but her body has some height and Yang to it, so she’s not super short/curvy she’s a bit taller and curvy, adding the Yang to make a dramatic romantic which I guess is TR.
I really got so sad when I first heard that she's a TR. I've looked up to her for years and the thought that I'm most likely SN and will never look like her is now unrealistic but still hard to take within the context of my own little world. Now I can't unsee that she's TR and can't believe I missed it entirely. Doesn't change how I see Theatrical Romantic but definitely changes the way I see Soft Naturals. This is probably what was keeping me from feeling at home with my style because I was following someone who couldn't have been further from my type and coloring.. So hopefully I'll get some clarity after some more research and new SN examples🌸
I really liked how she looked in the red dress you didn't like but you're right she does carry Vertical Lines well. TR's work well with very soft fabrics so those sweaters, soft draping, ruffles but not too much (medium size everything works well for TR's) and I dont know if you noticed but she created waist emphasis in all those looks with the side or front tucks (i personallylove oversized clothing so it's a trick I use to pull off these looks). I was thinking about Kibbe's system and I realized that people don't understand the bone and flesh distribution for each type. People take the descriptions in book and make it that you have to look exactly like the description when Kibbe notes that slight deviation is possible. I'm at this place where the constant interpretations are actually confusing people which could lead to wrong typing. I honestly thought that I was a FG but something felt wrong because I just felt more yin so I went to SG but based on the clothing that I like on myself it leans more TR, when I am more lean I definitely see more of an hourglass in my silhouette but I do have slight angularity in my shoulders, wider cheekbones and the length of my arms and legs, everything else falls in TR category.
Hip hip hooray let's welcome Selena to the TR fold! I'm so happy Kibbe is adding someone to TR instead of taking out! I puzzled over Selena never quite fitting into previous types, esp watching her in Murders, but now I totally get it! She's smaller than what you think and has a lux vibe. As a TR myself I'm totally over the stereotypical look and I think we need to refresh our opinion of what constitutes a TR esp combining with your system (im a right down) And, hello, you've now got your girl for modern casual looks for TR's❤
I'm very late to comment on this video. Does anyone else feel like Kibbe just looks at the general consensus online about a celebrity's type and then says they're another? I've spent about 3 years learning about Kibbe and have almost come to the conclusion that there is no system.
Selena is a TR? This is so weird and wacky to me... I have never been more confused... She seems to be barely in the height limits to be Yin dominant (1,65 cm according to Google) and she always seemed to have pretty strong Yang to me. I am so confused because I thought I finally understand Kibbe but if he tells me Selena can be TR then it means I understand absolutely nothing about his system, Yin & Yang and I might not be who I think I am (Romantic is what I settled for after a lot of research and consideration). I spend almost three years on Kibbe approach and it turns out everything I know about the "system" is wrong, what a way to waste my time. 😐
I feel you! As I said in the video.... It's really sad that so many of us are really interested in Kibbe, trying to hard to understand and yet... We can miss the mark so much At this point I think the blame cannot ourselves
@@StyleThoughtsbyRita I agree. I had a pretty strong reaction at first but now I am starting to think that while it is always hard to let go of certain ideas maybe Kibbe's little "Selena is TR" shock is not actually that bad as I thought it is, maybe it will lead to some new great style discoveries&inspiration in the future, who knows... 🌷
That’s why I gave up on Kibbe. I am not analytical, I am intuitive, and I need things to be holistic, philosophical, and fun. Kibbe is not fun for me. It’s stressful and confusing and ineffable. The point of a system is so I am not drowning out in the open sea. I can drown in confusion all by myself, I don’t need Kibbe’s help, TYVM! I can see it works very well for some and that’s great.
@@alteredcatscyprus I love this description and support you 100%, I think people can get so stuck on "wanting to figure it out" and end up pursuing style systems which don't really serve them
@@thebluehoodie2013 Yes, I agree. I think searching in itself helps you find your sweet spot. These systems are kind of like love languages. You have to find the ones that speak your love language for them to be helpful.
I actually really like the short red dress on Selena and I think in contrary a lot of the simple jeans and plain tops look boring on her. I my eyes the one where she wears jeans and the white button up shirt half tucked in looks especially unflattering. So there is undoubtedly an element of personal preference in what we perceive to be 'good looks' for a celebrity. The photo of her you've chosen for the thumbnail looks amazing though, so perhaps a lot of her essence actually exudes that strong femininity, rather than the girl next door, almost androgynous vibes of the Natural family. I know that Merriam Style was typing exclusively based on body structure and for David the essence is pretty important, so it doesn't surprise me that they would see the same person pretty differently.
Gomez being officially typed by Kibbe as TR, seems more apropos to me than soft natural, dramatic classic or any other ID. Her frame presents as yin and she has a sort of fleshy, round appearance. My perception is that she has a somewhat narrow and delicate looking torso, and an overall smaller yin frame. I've never found the slouchy, low, puffy-hipped unconstructed clothes at all attractive on her. The ultra-faded ripped jeans and other cheap, fast-fashion looking clothes featured in this video, don't do her any justice, in my opinion. The look on the right side, at 11:08 and at 11:26 are very flattering on her. Both those looks have waist emphasis, and look higher end, which I find appealing on her.
Well I am totally willing to see TR but honestly I think it's unnecessary to attack Selena's style by saying her clothes are cheap and fast fashion looking, she is a modern style icon and you may not like the specific looks i chose but they do represent her aesthetic Just because she is a Kibbe TR doesn't mean she needs to go out in an ultra ornate look everyday 🙄
@@StyleThoughtsbyRita My observation about the quality and appearance of her clothing had nothing to do with Kibbe's TR recommendations. Neither was my sincere comment deserving of the assumption of it being a sort of attack on Selena, because she is apparently perceived as a style icon. She is not a God/Godess, but a human being. I have been associated enough with fabrics and tailoring through family and other professionals in life, enough to see quite clearly what is quality tailoring, and quality fabric. I have also worked with enough people in the arts and entertainment to understand that being a well known figure, ie. a celebrity does not make one infallible, nor does it always make one entirely deserving of a title assigned by the public. If many people see her as a style icon, that is fine. That however does not necessarily make those with my viewpoint on the matter wrong, or deserving of hostility. I sat and watched your video and felt for you, in that you seemed to be feeling uncomfortable with the possiblity that your ID assignment being in conflict with Kibbe's, reflected on your acquired skills and your ability to guide others on their style/line journey. I had only the loveliest of thoughts about you and your discomfort about the situation. It seems sweet and open. Yet for some reason you felt the need to defend Gomez, and attack me for having made a very valid observation. There was not need for that, Rita.
@@Crewelperleology ok! I like Selena's clothes, I didn't mean that a celebrity is infallible I just don't think they look like cheap fast fashion 🌸 agree to disagree ✌️
Selena looks beautiful because she is a beautiful woman, she's a movie star, but I actually don't think many of the outfits you showcased are particularly flattering on her. they're well-constructed clothes but they don't do her any particular favors. watch the Come And Get It video and you will see the difference. she comes alive in those clothes.
I wonder how much the medications she’s been on might affect this. I know when I went on prednisone for s little less than a year my shape changed dramatically from more hourglass to an apple. I’ve since lost some, but not all, of that visceral fat. What clothes were most flattering shifted a bit.
You look beautiful today when I just saw your video I said wow that's good colours for you, your eyeshadow really highlights our beautiful blue eyes and the dress smashing colours for you
It is hard to tell if Selena is a TR since she NEVER wears outfits that are recommended for TRs. I am very surprised that Kibbe called her a TR but at the same time I feel like a TR outfit would look nice at least with her face. I feel like her body is really between SN and TR but her face is very TR, so she would look better in TR lines and fabrics although her body itself has a lot of similarities with SN.
Just a thought, maybe she does wear TR outfits and we have misinterpretted what is a TR friendly outfit. People keep showings fitted structured dresses with substantial yang as TR friendly. When a softly fitted dress would be more appropriate for a yin body.
@@tomjones2157 Well, when I say "TR outfits" I do not mean AT ALL fitted structured dresses. I think more about drapy fabrics with a slight shine, a bit of structure in strategic points (like shoulders). But it really does not have to be very fitted. I am a TR and I almost never wear super fitted garments since in general, these garments make my waist appear bigger on top of being uncomfortable. I mostly wear caftans lol.
@@SolveigMineo When Selena wears structured fitted dresses I don't think are her best look as they are so yang and I notice TRs seem to look better in just below knee length dresses than those mini dresses? Somehow on social media I keep seeing these super short structured dresses recommended for TRs :( When Selena wears drapey unfitted flowing fabrics I think this is great on her and other TRs.When she wears flowing fabrics she doesn't need to wear structure in the shoulders at all as her own shoulders themselves show their own structure through the draping fabric. SGs use this trick as well. You mentioned fabrics with a slight shine. For Selena its funny I don't see her wearing sparkle and shine that much, but maybe its because understated elegance is more her vibe? She reminds me of TR Jane Seymour alot that way, I hardly ever see her in shiny fabrics or sparkle either but she always looks so elegant and lovely. Also your KAFTAN styling tip for TRs' is brilliant! I did a search of Selena Gomez Kaftan and Jane Seymour Kaftan and I was amazed how flattering they are on these TR's! I'm sold! 🤩🥰
@@tomjones2157 you are right, her shoulders are angular enough to not need structured shoulders. I don't think TR need strongly structured shoulders. I just have shoulders that are a bit slopier than hers and I find I look better when the shoulder seam falls exactly at the shoulder, not further. As for shiny are concerned I mean a very subtle shine like in sanded silk or lyocell or cupro or a a few descrete interwoven metallic threads in the fabric. And I am glad you love the Idea of caftans for TRs. I sew my own and I love them. I personnaly love caftans from the 70s like the one Liz Taylor used to wear. But if course my caftans are not as sparkly as hers
hi Rita What a year and a half 2 years ago started as a funny test (kibbe) at some point started to become an obsession that made me more and more confused and confused, Am I now a natural with some extra dramatic features or am I a classic with a few dramatic features, the classic features seem so small on the ladies in the photo but i'm not big either (do my breasts count now, my chest is very flat and thin more i have more drama than flesh ) all those others movie stars look so thin is it really my type? with Selena Gomez I also recognized something in myself (I recognized myself in everyone ;) )and I thought recently when someone typed her as SD that that came very close too DC came close, TR not even the small sides and decorations don't suit her gr Sigrid
This is so nice, It really helps because I was kind of spiraling about my closet and style and how it flatters me... but overall I think it's okay to just wear what you like and feel comfortable and confident in. I believe I'm a SC but I thought I was TR for a looong time because I'm very petite 5'2 and my hips are my widest part. So I was confused and felt stuck dressing only for SC or TR when I love Sharon Tate, Brigitte Bardot and Audrey Hepburns style the most... I guess it's more like guidelines and not a strict follow for the types... I like this approach much better :)
I'm so happy to have a new typed Celebrity! Especially in the TR category that doesn't have that many examples. But gosh another "tall" 5'5" TR! . I never looked at her ID before except to be certain she wasn't gamine because over her smooth even length and curve. I think is super easy for us to overlook TR because of her height since we are told that tall TR's are rare in the general population. Also there was an overtyping of every cute girl being called TR for a while that got rightly slammed leading to people being afraid of placing people in this category. And this is compounded with not having many examples to know what exactly a TR "feels" like. Its so great to expand our vision, with each new typing David releases I feel I get to understand more. So looking close today I see she does have "trim" curves / petite curve vs fuller curve that comes with more yang. Also a very soft curved face. I notice that TR's seem to always have smaller hips, never very full hips. Finally I agree with you on the shorter fitted dresses. I don't really don't like Selena in them either! Perhaps its because they are too structured, and she is better in softly flowing fabrics and silhouettes perhaps?
I honestly never thought he was going to confirm her 😂 I wonder if he watched murders in the building. It’s good to finally have an answer on it but I imagine it’s shaking the community up pretty bad.
Just my take, but I think she's a case of TR body and baby face, so a lot of her overtly sexy outfits are therefore not her best looks. There needs to be some innocence added, IMHO. The jeans and tee, the overalls and blouse are good examples.
I disagree with David Kibbe on Selena being TR. She does not have an hourglass figure and she is too tall for being in this category just like Rihanna, who David also thinks is a TR. I think David needs to sit down and go over his system a few times and assign celebrities correctly. Rihanna is Soft Dramatic and Selena is Soft Natural.
For selena I never saw Frame so I thought she was SC because she is fleshy and without frame but also moderate. I don't know how she is petite tbh especially at her height that's a bit unlikely. Regarding the curves, most verified TRs (besides maybe salma hayek) aren't vavavoom curvy so I can see her as TR.
Honestly so super confused now haha. Someone looked at my photos and suggested SN for me so I'm exploring that now, but I'll say that Selena being typed as a TR just threw me for a loop. Even though I'm not as narrow in the shoulders as her, I definitely was using her to some extent to really cement partially that I was DC haha. So I dunno where I feel like I am now in my own understanding of the system anymore but I'm still trying to learn
After this announcement I realised that what is "flatterring" or "not" was based on our perceptions of what was said to be "true". And I agree with what you said around at 5:18. David Kibbe or all of the other similar approaches are very much heuristic so it's very hard to see and understand what they actually mean clearly (even though it makes sense when we try to understand what is already precise like the celebrity IDs). Also I think his system is quite inconsistent, saying this may be controvential but Beyonce being a 5'7" romantic shouldn't even be a consideration according to his ID limitations. So what I'm trying to say is I am not shocked at this point Selena being a TR but this made me realise that I trust this system less and less each day... Still a fun topic to discuss though it's interesting to see different perspectives when it comes to styling. (Btw sorry in advance english is not my first language)
i think and i hope that there.s a simple way to explain wat the kibbe types are with normal types .and i hope also that there,s a point (now there,s no pure natural and classic)to compare with i think thats essencial to compare yourself with some nutral point ,i ts diffucult to see it yourself every one things his/hear body is normal :thnks gr Sigrid
Yeah exactly! I think for Selena ultimately it's her face and what David perceived as her "essence" that make her TR. Obviously she does have a delicate body but she is not obviously TR just in her body
Please don't beat yourself up about it! I saw your video on her being possibly DC and thought you made very good arguments. I also think that DC is closer to TR than Kibbe's original typing of SN was! If he can get it "wrong", why can't the rest of the "Kibbeverse"? At the end of the day, she's a TR in his system because it's HIS system, but his system is only one interpretation of yin/yang balance, and his decision that she is TR is just one man's opinion, not a definitive description handed down by a god! :)
I also saw her video and I agree that she gave very good arguments. I like doing all this thinking and it's fun. I hope she continues. Could I also add that kibbe never typed Sheena as an SN? He never typed her at all. In fact the only thing he's ever said about her is that she is definitely _not_ and SN. The SN viewpoint was popularized by RUclipsrs like Merriam style.
okay I hear you!!! but like... why would David f*** with our heads this way? like why bother to "verify" her if he didn't take it seriously? I feel like he is a serious person so idk if he would just flat out make up some random ID for her
Thank you for having the balls to say this! And I don't think Rita should beat herself up either :) In my humble opinion, Kibbe has the ability to be wrong and he's been wrong many times (e.g. thinking Charlize Theron could be TR just because of her face, even though the face and body can't be two different types and what's in the body can be seen in the face if you look hard enough). We can respect his teaching without treating it as infallible gospel, lest this wonderful system start turning into a cult, LOL In my personal opinion Selena is absolutely a N type (personally I think she's pure N), and I think that's why she gravitates to those lines. The transparent sparkly makeup that looks phenomenal on TRs and Rs, looks like somebody threw powder on Selena's face and tends to make her face look broader and "puffier" than it is (see this example: media.glamour.com/photos/56959e3ad9dab9ff41b308d4/master/w_1280%2Cc_limit/beauty-2014-07-selena-gomez-makeup-main.jpg). Sometimes she looks overdone in matte deep colors, but she never seems to fail in "barely there" makeup with no sharp eyeliner or lip liner: assets.teenvogue.com/photos/55827feba28d9d4e0540a15f/master/w_1600/beauty-2014-05-selena-gomez-beauty-evolution-21.jpg I think Rita was definitely right with her guess of DC - and for what it's worth, DC and pure N are very easy to confuse!
You're being way too diplomatic. Tell it like it is: His system is incoherent, inconsistent, and makes very little sense. This is just a case in point. That's a failing of the system, not of your eye.
Right? Selena‘s typing singlehandedly made me question this whole thing. I am tired of a system making me feel „bad“about being 5‘7 when it doesn’t even make any sense 💀
yeah it's really losing me. he either does that arbitrary as some think or he doesn't explain his system enough and has turned it into a mystery he can only solve. whether we like other people creating their system or not, they usually do it or try to do it in a more simplistic way. i'm already lost about my own type but with this typing i'm even more lost on double curve, and yin dominant as I was more towards a some vertical for selena (i was more towards the classic family )
This! Its inconsistent yes!! Even for each subtype, like flamboyant gamines... you find so many body types (more natural, more dramatic, etc.). "His sistem" is a copy from a previous one, McJimsey, but it was she who came up with this ideia. He just followed her work.
To me she still looks like a soft natural. She doesn't look as good in TR clothing, I don't like DC clothing on her. Seems to me it's more of a perspective thing. Most of the natural looks she wears are FN and they dont fit her because the styling isn't good, the clothes are 3-4 numbers too big on her and the fabric is too bulky or rough. Even though you have a certain bodytype doesn't mean that all clothing recomendations of that type look good. I'm myself a soft natural, but boho style looks bad on me. I wear my lines with simple and soft fabrics and my hair I let it be free. This is also a misconception that the hair should be tousled when in fact in my experience no one really looks good with extremely messy hair. Might look good for a photoshot but in reality it looks messy and weird.
Yeah but DC is like the opposite of TR 😂 well I tried! I realize now that David really only puts women into DC if they have a strong "square" - ness to their frame and in their facial features. I used to think it was a bigger and more varied ID
I mean she looks rather small, soft and fleshy to me and her face ist obviously very yin. You could convince me that she kind of looks romantic face wise. Her shoulders and upper body is also pretty delicate and slightly yang BUT no double curve and the hips are not TR at all. I thought you had to have a double curve to be romantic oder theatrical romantic.
Hi Rita, to me Selena is a SN. I’ve seen the Merriam Style video on Selena, and it, along with all the pictures you showed of Selena in this video, has convinced me that SN is her type. I see width on Selena (this doesn’t mean fat or overweight), not as much as on a R or even a FN, and curve, again not as much as a SD, R, or a TR. I see softness, in her face, her features, and in her body flesh. Again, these three things, all slight, which are width, curve, and softness are her Yin. I see that her legs and arms look long, and she is slightly taller than 5’4”, which are her Yang. I don’t see any sharpness in her facial features, shoulders, hands, etc, so to me she’s more Yin with slight Yang. The Merriam Style video showcases different hairstyles that Selena has worn, and to me, Selena looks so much better with tousled, wavy, but still styled (not messy, wild, or unkempt) hair, that accommodates her Yin and Yang. All the makeup, hair, styling, and clothing in Merriam’s video about Selena convinces me that Selena is SN. To me she just looks better in SN clothing. And SN clothing has soft (loose) waist emphasis (or definition, or whatever it’s called; I don’t really yet understand the difference between these two terms in the world of Kibbe), not the absence of it in FN and D. All the pictures I’ve seen of Selena wearing clothes without this soft waist emphasis (or with clothing that is too boxy, or that doesn’t softly conform) don’t do her justice. I agree with you, Rita, about liking Selena in slightly longer lines, because they flatter her slightly Yang length. Key word is “slightly”. She is only 5’5”, not 5’7” and up. And I think Selena’s essence is a casual one, not an over the top sexy one like Marilyn Monroe (R), Sophia Loren (SD), Katy Perry, and Jennifer Lopez (two other SNs that I think are a little on the taller side). I never really considered Selena as DC because I don’t see any sharpness in her, either, such as Lily Aldridge, Diane Kruger, Nina Dobrev, and Courtney Cox, all DCs. These ladies have a sharpness on them that Selena just doesn’t have. The Merriam video also includes Janet Jackson, and Scarlett Johanssen, who are other SNs. And we can all agree that none of the SNs look alike! The video also delves into different essences, such as edgy, glamorous, boho, etc. So all these reasons, among others that I didn’t include because, hey, what do I know, are why I believe Selena is a SN. Rita, I in no way want to take anything away from you and your work by mentioning Merriam Styles’ video. I mentioned it because I wanted to support my views, and thought it perfectly does so. Thank you!
You have it twisted , the dresess you dont love on selena the short dresses are actually SG because she looks too womenly for it. And ypu said you like longer maxi dressess on her that is actually whay is recommended for a TR by kibbe.
Once we know "the answer" it's easier to work backwards. I think many TR women look beautiful in these shorter floral dresses you call "SG". The tricky part with Kibbe is that it's hard to truly educate ourselves without more guidance from David himself!
@StyleThoughtsbyRita hello, so I have been in the facebook group for a long time now and have studied SG vs TR and SD very intently. Kibbe has mentioned that TR's best look is a long ensemble the best look he says for TR is mermaid dress. All the dresses below the knee are SG.
Kibbe is crazy. Selena is 0% TR lol... TR look bad in soft natural/ or just natural looks meanwhile selena looks awesome in that. She doenst look her best in tiny dresses

Please can you do a video on Halloween costumes for the body types, if you release it around the start of October I bet it would do really well :)
100% agree with all your points!!!!!!
Especially #2, I literally just wrote that in a response to another comment 💗
#stayhumblewithKibbetyping
You’re right! And I feel that it also applies for Taylor Swift. She is a Kibbe dramatic, but in my opinion she looks at her best wearing her Right+Down essence outfits. I guess that’s why some people are confused and think that she’s a gamine instead. (Sorry if I wrote something wrong, I’m still learning english).
First time i'm hearing about left/down energy. Could you please explain what that means? Tanx
I don’t think I’m ever going to understand the system, or work out what I am!
This make total sense to me ! She definitely has that TR look.
Her strong yang undercurrent is less noticeable under her yin overlay.
But it’s there !
Her bone structure
Her shoulders
Her arms & legs
I think people miss it, because they think of a few celebs when they think of a type (TR: salma, jada, mila)
But the system is not about thinking of a person, to compare another person to !
We are making the assessment based on the measures!
I think this is the secret to having a good eye 👁
Getting out of that comparative world view.
Also I think it’s so funny that people want to challenge the view of the man who made his own system 😂😂
Anyways as a TR, this news hasn’t surprised me.
I think ... I really love the way your eyeshadow + eye colour combination picks up on the colours in your blouse.
❤️❤️❤️
Well said ✔️👏🏻
Dude, this makes me so happy.
Yes! Trust your eyes!!
Completely agree that camera makes it way harder to judge than IRL
Hi, what is meant by AFAIK?
@@inabind416 Hi! It means As Far As I Know
As someone pretty new to Kibbe but feeling pretty sure I may be a TR, Selena’s ID doesn’t shock me at all.
Before Selena was typed, among all the Kibbe "experts" it was all like "all Kibbe types can have waist definition, that's not the same thing as Kibbe curve!"
Anyway she is a great TR example, welcome and glad to have you here!
As someone who is also a moderate height TR, I appreciate that he typed and verified her. Annoys me when it's always assumed that TR's are petite.
What were the height limits for TR in David’s book? I thought maybe that’s where people got the idea TRs were petite - Selena usually appears to me to be super tall, but maybe that’s just because of her tiny head.
But she is petite though in the Kibbe way in that her curves are compact and trim. Kibbe's focus is from the shoulder to hips
Yes like they can be average height lol it’s such a weird assumption when average height is not tall.
Pretty close to my thoughts too
I think continuing the system in your own eyes is a good idea.
Yes agreed!!
We can miss the mark so much
At this point I think the blame cannot ourselves
Well I am totally willing to see TR but honestly I think it's unnecessary to attack Selena's style by saying her clothes are cheap and fast fashion looking, she is a modern style icon and you may not like the specific looks i chose but they do represent her aesthetic
Just because she is a Kibbe TR doesn't mean she needs to go out in an ultra ornate look everyday 🙄
@@StyleThoughtsbyRita Sounds good to me! 🕊🌻
maybe shes a tr with natural essence, cuz she looks really good in natural lines haha
As a tr I alway felt draw to Selena style even using some of her street wear as inspiration and they even flattered me. So make sense.
I wonder how much the medications she’s been on might affect this. I know when I went on prednisone for s little less than a year my shape changed dramatically from more hourglass to an apple. I’ve since lost some, but not all, of that visceral fat. What clothes were most flattering shifted a bit.
I have this issue, and it makes typing difficult. I look much wider and shorter than normal, at the moment!
I think Selena is more SN or possibly FG rather than TR. That's where I think her yin yang balance lies. But hey what do I know?!!
You look beautiful today when I just saw your video I said wow that's good colours for you, your eyeshadow really highlights our beautiful blue eyes and the dress smashing colours for you
Thank you!
I don't know. Not sure I agree with Kibbe here
Stop it lol
I agree with inquiry.
Honestly I think you were correct with your first take on Selena
hi Rita What a year and a half 2 years ago started as a funny test (kibbe) at some point started to become an obsession that made me more and more confused and confused, Am I now a natural with some extra dramatic features or am I a classic with a few dramatic features, the classic features seem so small on the ladies in the photo but i'm not big either (do my breasts count now, my chest is very flat and thin more i have more drama than flesh ) all those others movie stars look so thin is it really my type? with Selena Gomez I also recognized something in myself (I recognized myself in everyone ;) )and I thought recently when someone typed her as SD that that came very close too DC came close, TR not even the small sides and decorations don't suit her gr Sigrid
I knew she never fit into the N family for me, i always thought SG, R or TR
you are vindicated!!!
The TR is the one image Id that I understand the least. I would love if you would do a video describing Her! 😊🧡
I would love to make some short videos about the new celebrities, not sure if I will have time but this is my dream
@@StyleThoughtsbyRita oh,I meant the TR in general and not the celebrities!
@@sattvadevi oh yeah! I am doing the "trendy casual youthful TR"! It's coming up after the Soft Gamine video
@@StyleThoughtsbyRita Please do a video on the new celeb list. I"m so out of touch I didn't know this has happened!
Do you know where Kibbe confirmed this? Like does he have a blog or post that says it?
@@ricexcake143 See Facebook group - Strictly Kibbe. He comments on there using his wife's account.

@@ricexcake143 Though Kibbe does have a website, he is the most active on FB. Particularly his Strictly Kibbe FB groups.
As a LD TR, I am so relieved and appreciate Selena Gomez doing fashion her way 😊 She is inspiring!
Just my take, but I think she's a case of TR body and baby face, so a lot of her overtly sexy outfits are therefore not her best looks. There needs to be some innocence added, IMHO.
The jeans and tee, the overalls and blouse are good examples.
P.S. your dress/blouse and makeup are especially lovely in this video. I love that pattern on you.
Oh yes!! Ingenue would fit perfectly .
Wow, I never would've guessed!
I think even though those outfits aren't necessarily TR, Selena herself brings glamour to them on her own, which is very beautiful 🙂
Also love the blush Rita!!!
Saw a lot of people thinking she'd be dramatic classic...Hmm.
Beautiful top!
I'm sooo confused lol, I never would have thought Selena was a TR but I guess I never full agreed with the guesses that she was DC or even FN
Where did you find this information about Selena? I just want to subscribe to this source...
Strictly Kibbe of Facebook although personally I received 25 DM about it on Instagram hahs
DC to TR is a huge leap - so very nice to hear your rationale.
David has said that TRs are tiny, as are gamines. Maybe we're not perceiving what 'tiny' is.
It shows we absolutely can never understand it.
I don't think Selena looks long at all. To me she looks short and soft.
i think and i hope that there.s a simple way to explain wat the kibbe types are with normal types .and i hope also that there,s a point (now there,s no pure natural and classic)to compare with i think thats essencial to compare yourself with some nutral point ,i ts diffucult to see it yourself every one things his/hear body is normal :thnks gr Sigrid
When ur kinda average in height and have different essences it's so hard to find the body type
Yeah exactly! I think for Selena ultimately it's her face and what David perceived as her "essence" that make her TR. Obviously she does have a delicate body but she is not obviously TR just in her body
She looks like a SN to me, and her best outfits reflect that…
she doesn't have blunt bone structure or width
I disagree, because Selena doesn’t have a prominent hourglass figure. I would say she’s a soft natural.
Does she accomodate petite??? Double curve????
Just saying... I just did not understand... But I saw her on a vídeo... I see petiteness... 😅
Your blouse and makeup are gorgeous today!
Selena- what a surprise!
There is Kibbe System and the construct of Kibbe system ☺️
I'm a pure romantic body type and was compared to selena but I'm much smaller than her and I feel like she can pull off more edgy clothes than myself
We (TR )look horrible in oversized things and awesome in those shiny little dresses 💅
Nah. This ID assignment seems completely arbitrary to me. We shouldn't let DK or anyone else make us doubt our own perceptions and intuitions.
okay I hear you!!!
but like... why would David f*** with our heads this way? like why bother to "verify" her if he didn't take it seriously? I feel like he is a serious person so idk if he would just flat out make up some random ID for her
I'm over it.
@@candicedoss1112 😂
Sometimes she looks overdone in matte deep colors, but she never seems to fail in "barely there" makeup with no sharp eyeliner or lip liner: assets.teenvogue.com/photos/55827feba28d9d4e0540a15f/master/w_1600/beauty-2014-05-selena-gomez-beauty-evolution-21.jpg
I think Rita was definitely right with her guess of DC - and for what it's worth, DC and pure N are very easy to confuse!
You're being way too diplomatic. Tell it like it is: His system is incoherent, inconsistent, and makes very little sense. This is just a case in point. That's a failing of the system, not of your eye.
Thank you👏👏👏👏
Respect 🙌
I agree with you and I think sometimes we take Kibbe's word as unbreakable law even though he's human and he's able to be wrong.
👍⚘❤
where David Kibbe said that?, cause i'm trying to find his official social midias accounts
Check "strictly Kibbe" on Facebook
You were the cloests youtuber in guessing DC for Selena you saw sharpness and drama vs youtubers who gave her SN straight up bluntness
Yeah but DC is like the opposite of TR 😂 well I tried! I realize now that David really only puts women into DC if they have a strong "square" - ness to their frame and in their facial features. I used to think it was a bigger and more varied ID
What?!?!?!?
As a theatrical romantic, I do not feel represented by her lack of curves 😀
Wow!
I don’t agree that she’s a TR. She doesn’t have a small waist, it’s very moderate. I’ve always seen her as SN.
Thank you!
I agree with you and I think sometimes we take Kibbe's word as unbreakable law even though he's human and he's able to be wrong.
How in the world is she a TR?! No.
Her body screams SN
I’m sorry but to me Selena is not a TR.
No offense to Kibbe.
@StyleThoughtsbyRita hello,
so I have been in the facebook group for a long time now and have studied SG vs TR and SD very intently.
