Weird coincidence. Just learned that Monty Colvin (bassist for GC) has a podcast called Monty's Rockcast, thanks LL-vq1ws. Anyhow I started listening to it and Monty had just uploaded a new episode and the first thing he says is that it's been 31 years to the month since Space in Your Face was released. I didn't even plan this!

THE GALACTIC COWBOYS ! Pure genius, a missing link between metallica and the Beatles, will always love this band . Following albums were less thrashy but their songs were all gems . The first album is a must have . Kudos to you for speaking about this underestimated band !

I discovered them in July 1993 opening up for Dream Theater. They came out on stage during Dream Theater and sang the chorus of "Take the Time" while James L. sang the lead. Galactic Cowboys had so much energy when they were on stage.

Wow, never thought I'd see Galactic Cowboys featured in a RUclips video! As for that bass tone, it's class bi-amping a la Doug Pinnick; split signal right out of the bass into a crossover, with clean lows going to any number of 15" speakers, and distorted highs going into (typically) 4x10s with variable tweeters, and all of it powered by either SVTs or Mesa tube amps (tubes are critical for that sound). Season with compression to taste!

Great to see some Galactic Cowboys love. Definitely a desert island band. Never got their due. Geffen was putting them up to be the next big band but Nirvana came around at the time of their first album and Geffen changed their mind and chose to go with Nirvana instead. What could have been. Galactic cowboys never age.

Genuinely, objectively!, one of the best albums and bands ever. I travelled from Ireland to Houston especially to see them, and I would absolutely do it again (I'm not wealthy by any means!). Their music is that special. Their catalogue isn't just fantastic music, it's feels, to me, like a guidebook for striving for true originality, not settling to just be another band. Haven't watched this video yet, but Wally, the guitarist from I think '95 or so onwards, is (along with Will Owsley) the single greatest writer of guitar solos ever. Pick your cliché... "it's a self contained song", "every note counts", "you can whistle the entire thing from memory", etc. Dane is an unbelievable guitarist, I personally just happen to gravitate towards Wally-type guitar exploration!

Of all the CDs in my CD collection, This album probably got the most plays along with AIC Dirt, and Masters Of Puppets. Another hidden gem for me is the band 'Biohazard'. I was lucky enough to have seen them live. It was a great era of music. 🎼🎸

No Problems was probably my favorite track on this as a teen. While I had the angsty teen vibe going on, it was the most emotional song to me on the album. I needed to hear the message. This is still a go to for me on the album. My first GC experience was them opening for Dream Theater, and they came out and did the vocal harmonies on Take the Time. Got to hang with both bands after the show. As a 17 year old, they made their mark on me and it still shows 30 years later.

I am a massive, massive Galactic Cowboys fan. Sam Taylor, who worked with ZZ Top and then went on to produce and manage bands like King's X, Galactic Cowboys and Atomic Opera. This album, although only their second, was the end of this era for the Galactic Cowboys. They got dropped by their label, split up with Sam Taylor, and lost their guitarist Dane Sonnier as they basically broke up. Two weeks later, they were offered a deal from another label and everyone but Dane got back together and they brought in guitarist Wally Farkas. The album that directly follows this one, "Machine Fish", is outstanding as well!
As a big fan, I think all of the albums are great, but SIYF and Machine Fish are two absolute gems and required listening for sure!

Heavy guitar riffing, amazing vocal harmonies... this band needed far more attention than they got! "About Mrs. Laslie" is the killer track here. THey also toured with Dream Theater in the Images and Words days. The GC would all run out and help sing the chorus on "Take the Time" Great stuff! Glad you found it!!!

I've heard of this band but never listened to them before... they sound killer. Gonna have to check them out more. They have a little 90's Anthrax in them when they get thrashy, imo. If this is a new series, I love it! Also 93 is the year I turned 21 so that's when the party really started for me, lol!

I listened to album to death! I still love all the catchy melodies mashed up against brutal riffs and playful shifts. I wish you had covered Still Life of Peace... what a killer song and a brutally insane cello & sitar breakdown section!

These guys are from Houston and I ran into them several times. In the 90s that was a common Houston sound for bands (melodic, harmonizing, with heavy riffing). Congrats on finding them and thanks for covering them! #HTownrepresent

Monty Colvin has also his project Crunchy which is heavy melodic punk always with some beatles in it, and another band you could listent to beatles wise is BEATALLICA ! A band that mixed metallica ans Beatles song in a most puzzling ways, you should listen to them they were excellent !

One of my all time favorite albums ❤️ They deserve all the attention they can get, so I think it’s great that you made this video.
My brother and I have a podcast (in Norwegian), and in a few weeks we will release a new episode where we talk about «Space In Your Face. We also got to interview Monty Colvin for it🤘🤩

Would love to do an interview with you some time, I'm starting to interview people on my channel about passion. I have heaps of questions for you!!
    Cheers from Australia 🍻

WOW, I thought I was the only one who picked this up when it came out! Back in the day I had no way to audition any of the tracks, I thought the cover and band name were cool so i took a chance! lol BTW picking up some serious Sepultura Arise album type vibes in some of the rhythms!

Saw them open for Dream Theater in 1993. Bought this album the next day and it is an all time favorite

Complete agree with the assessment here. I also think the the production of the album also has a big part in it. It adds up to al you explain in this video. Especially the drums and bass production makes it very chugging sounding without being 'real thrash' from that era. It's very unique. I think the made more great albums, but this one has always been my favorite since it came out.

Early to mid-90s I was mostly listening to bands like Melvins, The Jesus Lizard, Shellac & Neurosis but I still liked a lot of “alternative metal” like Galactic Cowboys, Warrior Soul, Mind Funk and a bunch more. One of the best albums from that side of things is Last Crack - Burning Time…I probably listen to that one more often than the rest.
