This is my favorite Mr. Show skit. In the commentary for this episode on DVD, Bob Odenkirk said he got the idea from watching a documentary on TV about Al Jolson. He said that the people being interviewed who had worked with Jolson thought he was talented, but they hated him. "I was his assistant for 30 years. He was a cruel man. He was cruel to me, but boy could he dance. Then they cut to Jolson, dancing like shit."
Dancing like Shit, like Shitty Dancing, or Dancing like SHIT like, just Dancin Dancin Man!? lol its only been 14 years, so im sure you'll get right back to my comment lol
Tragically, Dickie's girlfriend, real-life aviation pioneer Audeline Smithson, died when her airplane's wings fell off mid-flight a few weeks after Aeroplane was published.
Both these guys have excellent crooning voices. The "Baby Loves" and "Baby's got" are too good to be anything but divinely inspired. I've been singing 'Sports Bra' and 'Elevator' for 26 years.
It’s a lead a horse to water thing. There’s a lot of great stuff out there that people just don’t appreciate. “What is this.. I don’t get it?” Their loss.. this is one of the best produced sketches they way they told the story. So good
kinda like tool, who was on here a few times. if you show someone a tool song they'll be like eh why is it so long, but if they find it themselves it's an incredible discovery
Wow, I remember watching this in the 90s and thinking it was hilarious. I randomly searched "counterfeit money machine song" today and found it again. Pure gold!
This has been my favorite Mr. Show sketch since I first saw it on HBO when it was new. I've seen it many times on the dvd's and on this youtube clip, but only just now I notices that they are singing about the vacuum cleaner and carpet sweeper they're using at the end. It's nice that this sketch is so genius there's still new stuff to find after all these years.
To the person downthread who wondered why they used megaphones in this sketch: Microphones as we know them today weren't good enough to use widely until the mid-1920s. Before then, performers' voices had to carry, and there were times when some pop singers really did have to use megaphones on stage in a big music hall.
Electric tie rack it's so nice moves ties from side to side. Electric tie rack, baby loves it, rackin up electric ties. Wear em all over the town. Thank you.
WHY DO SOME PEOPLE NOT THINK THIS STUFF IS FUNNY? My GF looks at this stuff and gets pissed off that I'm even showing it to her. ARGH. Hey, maybe you guys would like to watch my RUclips show on my channel? It has a similar polar effect that Mr. Show has. Btw, in high school, I named my band "Mr. Combo." That was before I had seen Mr. Show. We think the same way, I guess. 10 years later there was still a band named Mr. Combo at that high school, too. Weird. It wasn't even mine.
This is going to sound WAY lame...but Tom Kenny completely sells this one...and towards the end lends a certain meloncholy to it that is just awesome.... you still got it kid ...thank you
This was based on an Al Jolson bio where they would talk about how he had a beautiful voice and when they would show Al singing he sounded just like Dickie and The Kid.
I love how this turned from making fun of "In My Merry Oldsmobile," the custom of playing performances of very small song snippets in biopics and documentaries, and the Roy Smeck documentary into these two dudes having to invent entire things just to keep screaming about them in a megaphone
I also love how Bob, David and their writing staff constantly turn the Bob/David comedy rivalry into a vehicle for legitimate pathos regarding those we tend to throw to the wayside. This and the Gibbons/Fairsley skit hit hard.
I listened to some of the commentary on the DVD for this, and they said they based it on some old PBS show were old folks kept saying how wonderful these old singers were, but in reality they thought they were awful. I think Tom Kenny may have come up with it.
You've got it backwards. It's the only real name. The others are fake. They just wanted to make it seem like anyone was good enough to share a venue with him.
My favorite episode to show people who've never seen Mr. Show. Season 2 episode 6: The Velveteen Touch of a Dandy Fop. close tie with S3 Ep 3 "OH, You Men" the "lost episode"
I wish they would bring back Mr. Show or at least run the (entire) series again via on-demand. More People need to see these episodes. So many come to mind that had some of the most hilarious stuff I've ever seen in my life.
There's little audience reaction because the skit isn't laugh out loud funny. It truly is one of their best skits. While I do not laugh out loud, I do appreciate it's humor, and smile watching it. The skit ends on a note as sad as the passing of time.
One thing I just noticed recently, and you can see it at :40, is how the Dickie Crickets name on the marquee looks superimposed and fake, lol. Awesome segment - when Jay jumps in to apprehend Kid Jersey on Counterfeit Money Machine, I lose my shit. "You still got it, kid." "Thank you."
yeah it's one of their best skits. i too busted a gut the first time i saw it, and it still cracks me up. glad it's on youtube so i can just give someone the link, instead of lamely trying to explain the bit to them.
Damn, that little tune could get stuck in your head. I'm fucking singing everything I'm doing now. "Gettin' a drink, don'tcha know I'm gettin' a drink.." Ugh. So much awesomeness in this sketch I"m not even gonna bother to write it all. clearly, you all agree & see the genius, too. Fucking brilliant. ..Thankyou!
I remember him from even before this when he was the host for Friday Night Videos in the early 90's. Plus he was also Binky The Clown in one of the greatest alcoholic clown movies ever! That was also before Mr. Show.
Maybe because it's kind of sad to see formerly big stars, forgotten and lost in their own little world of memories. Too many performers have ended up like that.
Love how the ending goes from Tom Kenny's character fondly reflecting on their legacy to bitter rambling about the crappy movie playing at the theater.
yeah if you listen closely he says "electric tie rack its so nice, moves ties from side to side. electric tie rack baby loves it, rackin up electric ties" it's wrong like that on purpose, they talk about it in the commentary
Looks like Bob’s future after Better call Saul. Sad. Joining David. Seriously, I love these guys! They only get better with age. Like a discount box of CVS wine. No… But really, these two have shaped an entire generation of comedians and I can’t thank them enough. Peace.
This is one of my favorite Mr. Show skits. What's even funnier is the commentary track on the DVD where Bob Odenkirk talks about how he came up with this skit by watching a documentary on Al Jolson, where those who worked with him said how cruel he was, but boy could he dance!

HAHAHAHA!!!!! Gold.
This is my favorite as well. It's one of few that a couple of my friends got a kick out of when I showed it to them. Public's fickle, I guess.
Dancing like Shit, like Shitty Dancing, or Dancing like SHIT like, just Dancin Dancin Man!? lol its only been 14 years, so im sure you'll get right back to my comment lol
@@Polygonlin I think he may have meant dancing in a fashion he perceived to be poor. See you in 2034.
the kid was so polite, he coined the phrase (thank you), people say it all the time now.
Megaphone crooning, or as we called it, megaphone crooning
Yep, that's in the show.
so goddamn funny
Always reminds me of that. Gatorade comical haha
@@skeletonbuyingpealts7134 yep, that's what the comment was quoting

Dwayne Richardson it would have been nice if Biggie and Tupac ended up working at a Walmart together or something
@@spankytag I guess they just never got their _shot_ or perhaps the problem was that they actually _did._
The East Coast is the better of the two coasts.
Ugh, don't taint Dickie and Kid with rap.
"Aeroplane. Baby loves my aeroplane. Can't get enough of my aeroplane. Flying it round and round." Dickie Crickets, 1923

“Penicillinnnn, baby loves my penicillin, baby’s WELL because of my penicillin 💉 takes it all day loooong...... thank you.”

Tom Kenny's delivery in the sketch really makes it.

Tom Kenny cracks me up in literally every sketch. His comedy is so gold
No I agree with you
his voice makes everything so fucking funny, what a legend

1:07" He coined the term, everybody is saying it now". This skit can get funnier when you notice things you did not at first. It is a classic.
This bit got me into this show way back when. "Rackin' up electric ties" for the win, as the kids say. Top notch.
I love when Bob is singing "Electric Sports Bra" gets booed and then apologizes
"sorry....sorry"
I like how "Dickie Crickets" is superimposed at 0:40.

Yesss this was my favorite Mr. Show sketch, thank you for putting this up.
Genius!!! Love all the guys from Mr Show! And the girls too! Thanx for sharing!
Aw man this is one of my favorites! Thanks for uploading
Mr. Show did this thing where they created backstory and lore that they only allude to. A 1920's crooner invented the term "thank you". Hilarious.
There's little audience reaction because the skit isn't laugh out loud funny.
It truly is one of their best skits. While I do not laugh out loud, I do appreciate it's humor, and smile watching it. The skit ends on a note as sad as the passing of time.
When David Cross says that Thank You at the end it always makes me smile
I sometimes find myself singing "Electric Sports Bra". This is of course almost impossible to explain to other people.

I don't understand the electric tie rack. Is the tie rack itself electric or does it rack up electric ties?
"They were the kings of Megaphone crooning. Or as we called it back in our day, 'Megarphone crooning'." Fucking rediculously funny.
