😮 WTH? I think I’ll stick with G shock, Seiko, Hamilton and Tissot. Tissot is the Seiko of Europe. 😂
Only "fancy" watch I own is a Tissot with a Powermatic 80. At least they don't try to hid the fact that it's an ETA-based movement, and even modified it make it something genuinely Tissot. You can clearly see the tiny ETA logo engraved on the movement through the sapphire case back.
I love my Tissot
Yeah, a Seikopath, and just started in on g shocks….and I am good.
Good choices there! Hamilton is the best bang for your buck, and G-Shock is just great!
And Orient, Oris and Citizen.
A watchmaker friend of mine told me more than 15 years ago that many luxury watch manufacturers cheat brazenly when it comes to movements.
Including rolex?
Seiko and Orient have some magnificent in house movements that are super affordable and well made.
With much respect,
Please don’t put orient in the same sentence as Seiko…..Seriously. Just because they’re both Asian? Wtf. Lmao.
Respectfully
You know that orient is owned by seiko-epson right? Stop being a correcting people without knowing, with respect.
Seiko lied when they said their products arent habit forming. Just lies.. :)
Seiko is the crack cocaine of watchdom.
I love Seiko, I have a kinitc watch, and honestly think it's immortal, my capacitor has yet to fail me.
Those bastards, like crack dealers!
Information like this is what keeps me following you Brother. It’s nice to see someone in our side. This channel and The urban gentry are my 2 favorite channels. ❤❤❤
Thank you timeteller for telling it.

I look forward to shopping at your site.
Got my Tag Heuer Aquaracer 200 with the blue dail recently as my wedding present, when this watch came out, I fall in love for the look of it and perfect size for my wrist. But I knew im not gonna pay the 3000USD retail for that movement. I looked around and found one brand new second hand for half of the retail price, that price tag makes more sense to me and I bought it straight away. When I was doing research on this watch, the hate on Tag Heuer is crazy, but mainly cuz they are overpriced, and things that T3 stated in this vid. But I would suggest if you love the watch, do some research and look around before you buy. I am totally happy with this watch, and it holds a sentimental value.
Good for you mate. TH got nailed on one watch not their entire catalogue, they have great heritage and have made some fantastic movements. Video like this are a bit misleading at most brands have had to adopt other movements at some time and didn’t own up to it. Ultimately the watch you have is a great piece and better still you have the story to match it.
John, I got my start in watches via Tag. I call it my soft spot. I have several and although I understand the price vs value i still like then.
My guilty pleasure LOL.
Congrats on your wedding!
It probably holds the sentimental value from the person that owned it before you and it's just residual
What prices should I generally look at for TAG? I want an AquaRacer or Monaco but don't know how much I should expect to spend on a used one!
@@justinwhite4995 well generally I will say a brand new condition second hand Tag Heuer will be at least 50% off its retail price, but it also depends on what movement the watch have, for example the Aquaracer also offer quartz version that might be cheaper than the Sellita version. Im not sure abt Monaco cuz I dont know much abt it. But I would still suggest do your own research, so you know what you are spending your hard earned money on😊
Go for the Casios if you have budget constraints. If you are ready to spend more, go for Omega.
Eye opening video for me, great work! These brands are out of my reach, I can't imagine someone laying out that kind of money to get lied to and ripped off. I'm on a Helm kick now, excellent tool watches with reliable and accurate Seiko NH 35 movements, good value for money spent. Cheers!
BUSTED!!!!
We can always trust Casio 👍
Good on you for calling out the liars! I've started doing with watches what I do with beers...gravitate toward the small craft brands that take pride in what they make and have excellent customer service.
This is always a good way to approach such hobbies and passions and give so much more satisfaction.
I can't say I'm really surprised. It's a shame these watch brands see the need to deceive the public. Now, you've brought it out and there'll be more that will. Thanks for bringing this to us watch enthusiasts and please keep up the scrutiny.
Their deception is why I shop micro-brands. It means I can still get nice watches with decent movements (Sellita, ETA, Valjoux, Seiko etc.), and more of them, without spending thousands on one major brand and having to stop there. To think that I almost purchased one of those Panerai watches. Phew!
Con’t forget Rolex claiming their mass produced watches take a full year to make. How many million watchmakers does Rolex have?🤣
Rolex never lies. How they do it, is they don't tell the truth.
They may be thinking of the time between when the ore is mined and the gold is dug out of the ground, to the time the finished watch is shipped to the dealer, including all the testing and documentation that goes into it.
@@chrisrussell63 and advertising…
Even though I almost hate them and they’re obscenely overpriced……. I have to admit that Rolex does make very high quality calibres today and decades & decades ago!
Why hammer on a non-profit company that makes well-built watches?
Recently bought an Orient Defender 2 from Jomashop on sale for around $160. This actually has an in house movement and keeps helluva acurate time for that price +4 seconds. Always loved the look of Panerais but with thier recent press I am better off with an Orient or four of them 😂. Watches are also like cars, most expensive ones aren't the most functional or realiable and mostly just marketing.
I’ve bought an Orient Kamasu for my father and myself when I first got into wristwatches, and they’ve been constantly wound and running for 2 years, and it’s still accurate to +-3 seconds and +-7 seconds respectively, from when we first set it to the exact accurate time to the seconds using the international GMT time.
We definitely got lucky but in the end, it mainly is the luxury branding and feeling isn’t it.
I collect Orient watches and the least accurate one I have is about -20sec/day and its from the 1980's. Most of my 'new(ish)' ones(2000+) are under +/-10sec/day.
These arent the best watches out there, but they are inexpensive mechanical time pieces with tons of character.
This is long known . When shopping for a high class watch you dig in to it a bit and you find this info very fast on the internet . That is why i look at only a few watchbrands , if i want to spend a couple of 1000s on a watch . btw , i do own 2 Omega's .
You forgot to mention last year's aqua terra colorful dials being delays due to covid lock downs in China.
Seiko and Hamilton are my go to watches now until i got some for Tudor or Cartier, which are not that expensive compared to Hufukinblot and Panassrai
I’m new to this world, so I appreciate this information. I know very little aside from what I like visually and what my budget is. Thanks, guy. Sincerely, Watch Girl
I get the hate for the brands not being honest about using off the shelf movements. Personally I prefer off the shelf it make’s servicing less expensive down the road. Sheet Rolex used Valjoux, the Zenith movements in the Daytona and almost every brand used ETA movements from the 60-80’s and most vintage Chronographs have Valjoux movements.
The common between the 3 brands is that they are subsidiaries of LVMH, and Hodinkee as well...
Panerai is a Richemont subsidiary. ZENITH is Loius Vitton also btw. Capitalism is a bitch subsidiary 😆😂
really ? Panerai is owned by LVMH ? shocking...
Wow, an eye opener for me. I always wanted a Panerai, but the price doesn't justify the quality issues for me; now it does even less.
Mine has no issues, even dropped it (more tossed it) from almost 2 meters on the floor and it works perfect. It gains under 45 seconds per month. And the design is awesome. Yeah ,the movement is maybe not so in house but as long as it works and works well that more important to me
Happy owner of a Panerai here. No quality issues so far. 🤷♂️. Built like a tank.
The 3 you listed are not really high end watch makers in my opinion. They are more fashion pieces for chavs, brand name wearers. That's why watch collectors will show you more respect if you were wearing a $1000 Orient than a $15000 Panerai. I think some of their watches are nice eye candy and in their own right are pretty good watches for daily use.
I like playing in the cheaper end of the pool with my seikos and g shocks, I know what I am getting and it’s done for fun
Hublot and Panerai I understand, but I am almost sad about TAG. I LOVE them and have wanted a watch for a while now. One of my friends has an AquaRacer that is so beautiful and comfortable, and I have always wanted a Monaco (Moreso after seeing one in person and trying it on) I have heard mixed things with TAG but my friend who owns one loves it, and I felt I would too. Knowing the movement is not a real "100% In-House" movement breaks me and makes me wonder if there is a better option for the Monaco looks (Bulova has a pseudo-clone cheap that I almost want to try) but with a movement and a price that is actually worth it! (Please I want a TAG so bad and this made me depressed now!)
Buy the watch YOU love and want. The movement in question was an extremely modified movement. Everything was redesigned by Tag if I remember correctly but the wording from them was not fully honest. At least the owned up their slip up.
I have an Aquaracer that is 12 years old now. Absolutely love it. Built like a tank. In my opinion miles better build quality and feel than comparable Longines, Oris, Certina etc. peace ✌🏻
technologicallu speaking there is nothing wrong with the base Seiko 6S Movement. its just that they LIED in their marketing. they underestimated their loyal fans and thinking no one will notice. i still love Tag. and i still think they can make in-house 100%. they just want to cheap that time.
It's best to take all watch marketing with a grain of salt. If anyone actually believes that a steel Rolex sports watch is really worth $10-20k, well, than you have to buy into the "aura" of the watch. Of course, any product is worth what a buyer is willing to pay for it, so....there you go!
Don’t forget to mention that Rolecks likes to claim they are using uniquely made “oyster steel” or “RLX titanium” when in fact they are just plain old commercial grade metals.
Show me a Rolex Datejust 41 that actually IS 41. It's 39.5 and that sh!t matters to some of us....They sit on a throne of LIES!
Never been a big fan of any of these brands, and now, even less. Thanks, a great video.
You discussed Hublot, Tag, and Panerai…I thought you were going to talk about luxury watches?
Yep, definitely not luxury, just high priced.
This is the main reason why I started buying Chinese clones. At least I am going in knowing they are and not paying thousands for it.
Always appreciate the fact checks - and the way you tell the story. Best in-house RUclips channel for fun watch news!
Plus don't forget to mention the 70.000 dollar white ceramic panerai with an extraordinary cheap stamped or pressed bridge inside
If you are buying a watch with an ETA, Seiko or Miyota movement in it, there is no point in buying a chi-chi branded watch, just get the original and pay the minimum amount for it. We completely agree.
Well Well Well!! Wouldn’t you know they’re all of the usual suspects. I wrote each of those brands on off years ago because they’re notorious frauds. They’re insulting their customers.
Yeah man, that's why I don't bother with these luxury pieces or companies for that matter. I don't know if you already have one, but it'd be nice to see a video on what companies have gone out of their way to be honest to their customers. Those are watchmakers I'd go out of my way to support. You're doing the Lord's work, chief!
Why don't we discuss the lies of the big boys? Like... Rolex?
Shhhhhhhhh, we don't discuss Rolex short comings, its high treason.
As a watch collector, what your saying about Panerai is the reason why I’ve never purchased one , such a shame .
And some watch enthusiasts will say that "in-house" doesn't mean anything.
Even Tudor is using the B01 Breitling movement on their chronographs. It is a wonderful movement. Just admit it.
That is correct. But they never lied about that nor did they deny it. It is known that both Tudor and Breitling use the same movement.
Panera is a joke. Had a submersible sent to a Panerai dealer to have it verified, but he said there’s almost no way of telling a fake from a real one now. That tells me how overpriced their watches are if a 300 dollar fake is a one for one copy.
Panerai was still OK in the early 2000s, it did started to shift during the Brooklyn bridge edition…
Hey Jory, have you considered covering the topic of "in-house" versus "in-group" movements? For me, I don't care much about the distinction. But I definitely want to know I don't have an ETA in a watch above 2-3 grand. But I'm fine with "in-group."
NGL it took me a while to get on board with your humour, but I really do enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for the insights, and highlighting what seems to be a rather sketchy practice. Friends of mine would recommend I look into Panerai because I have the wrist to pull off 42-44mm watches and I must say, your video has given me pause about their watches. Even second-hand, a number of models seem to fetch silly money, and it all just seems like an unfortunate trend that has no legs to stand on. Anyway, keep pumping those biceps, and all the best!
My Omega chocolate speedmaster sapphire sandwich says on the case back "the first and only watch worn on the moon". Turns out Boluva was also worn there.
And many other watch makes too, research it.
@@smgeraldo they all lie, because no one went to the moon. I wish I knew this before buying a speedy. Still, a nice watch though, which I wear for work every day (plumber/heating engineer). It has taken a beating.
@BonnieDoon84 correct. Einstein said "the height of ignorance is condemnation before full investigation".
Who cares. Just wear and enjoy the damn watch.
I can't afford an Omega for a start.
@@markjones1337 No one went to the moon? Can you explain then why there is a mirror in the moon that you can bounce a lazer off of ?
I’m glad I came back. I had arbitrarily kick you out of my subscriber list but one screw tube did Jody dirty you were one of the ones that stood up for him and I respect stand up guys and I found out after watching anymore now I hate to admit it I was wrong about you. We actually agree quite a bit on watches
Man it’s been forever since i got one of your videos recommended. Glad to see you’re still at it goodsir!
You skipped the part where TAG Heuer started to put Sellita movements in their watches, but left the words "ETA based" on their website. Also after the Seiko debacle the watch internet forums with TH in them were on fire. So bad that during one hot thread where TH was getting killed some fool logged in as JCB was defending hard. Finally someone said "WTF do you know?" and it was then that the person revealed that they were Jean Christophe Babin, the then CEO of TH... Do I bash TH hard? YOU BET. Why? Because like many others who do, I own one. I could sell it, but I keep it as a reminder to do my research. Like most, it was my first watch and my last mistake.
Then there should be an honorable mention for U-Boat putting "standard" calibers in them with a big plastic spacer ring so it fits the sewer lid of a watch. At least Panerai collected their screw ups and replaced the movement with a finished one and gave it back.
You could also mention how before Swatch wanted to stop selling movements, companies were buying the rights to defunct out of business brands, digging up any relative they could find and making up a story about how they are continuing the family's history of watchmaking.... I guess they told them, they would get a suit, their picture on a brand and a check for $10k after they sign the NDA.
Copy and paste the below into Google and see who and what I mean:
The Brand’s Backstory
To better understand’s the brand’s legacy and birth, we must start in the year 1942. The Italian Navy commissioned wristwatches for its pilots with precise technical specifications. A pilot’s watch is an important and integral instrument in the cockpit. As a result, the task itself was quite a challenge. More importantly, watchmaker Ilvo Fontana drew up designs that guaranteed optimum visibility and waterproofness. The unique design was unlike anything before. However, Ilvo’s designs never ma...
The Brand’s Founding
Meanwhile, decades passed and the new millennium arrived. In the year 2000, Ilvo’s grandson chanced upon the designs and blueprints of his grandfather. Subsequently, grandson
Omega lied to me when they told me their METAS master chronometer is suppose to be 0/+6 secs/day.
Mine speeey 3861 is less then 2sec/ day
It's supposed to be 0/+5
@@Draknareth so it is ok. in that range. As I said less than 2 seconds.
Mine was losing up to 8 secs/day.
@@Draknareth Depends on the model. The older models are METAS tested to be within 0/+6, but the newer models are METAS tested to be within 0/+5.
Many luxury brands are living off their names and charging way more than they should versus the manufacturing cost.
Pana-lie, You-blow and Scag-Heuer are prime examples.
Enjoyed the video, as alway. Pretty old news in each case, though.
What?? Watchmakers BS's us? Never!😂
These three aren’t the only examples. Bremont lied about the purportedly in house nature of an LJP movement that they put in their watches, and Ball is currently claiming to be using an in house movement on some of its models which is clearly an LJP movement.
I mean would you really consider any of those brands to be “luxury”? I know they’re expensive ass watches in some cases but none of them have ever been known for exceptional finishing or innovation.
That's flat out criminal and should be investigated!!
I watched the movie Ex Machina for the first time last night and I thought damn Oscar Issac looks just like the time teller!
You should do an episode about all the micro brand lies!
The same problem used to apply for IWC.
Maybe just get the Swatch Omega Collab, its clear what it is. Inspired Omega designed licensed watch inexpensive too.
Its better to stick to tissot, longines and hamilton the best value to your money period.
What year did PaneraI die?
I have a 2007 and a basic 2008 that I’m worried about now 😕
It is good to have people like you calling out these companies. With that being said, I absolutely love my PAM 1314. Does it have an in house movement? 🤔. I was told so..🤦♂️. Did I buy it because of rhe movement? No I didn't. No regrets so so far....great video.
Hey Jordy! Happy Passover! Also… have you done a video on Ball watches yet? If not, what’s your thoughts on them? Keep up the good work! Also… flexing.. beast mode lol
Nothing wrong with ETA movements. Personally the whole in house thing is more marketing than anything.
when you buy an BMW you want BMW engine or KIA engine ?? Same thing with watches ... Its common sense ...
@@Ariel.Fortele Worst comparison I've heard yet. So you're saying all watches should have in house movements
If you have at least 2 neurons in your head, then absolutely yes
@@Ariel.Fortele I believe they should advertise the actual movement they use. I have watches with in house movements and eta movements.
My point is a modified eta movement like in my Tudor Royal 41mm keeps time just as good as my Black Bay 58. It’s not like they use it straight off the shelf. They do upgrade like use silicon balance spring and etc.
Not all standard movements are garbage because they are not in house. Honestly for my next watch I’m trying to decide which GS spring drive I want. I have a few Grand Seiko just not spring drive yet. The accuracy on those put regular mechanical watches to shame. Plus I love my GS dials.
So yes I agree they should disclose what they are using movement wise but that’s not to say that in house movements are always the best.
@@shawnmartin1306 Horology is about emotion, about living the spirit, it is about the history of the brand and its evolution... It is about the DNA of the brand, about the pedigree of the brand..In that mechanism it stays or it doesn't stay that emotion, that transcendental experience, that history, that evolution, that heritage, that story, even the future... It's not about PRACTICABILITY
That was my problem/concern with Rolex. Now they are coming with display case backs. But they are 20x more expensive. Crazy.
After long time using outside movs,( like Zenith), Rolex aquired their "in house" without developing them. R simply bought mov makers.
Ahh. I’m new to this. But ya. I headed something similar. It’s kinda a shame for what you paying but many high end makers buy outside movements and just ass the emblem or some etching or cut outs on the rotor counterweight and call it “in house”. Guess that’s the biz. Like cars and trucks. Other companies build there engines (especially diesels trucks- example GM Diesel is Isuzu, Cummins , dodge and International , Peugeot / fiat, ford. It’s a shame. But gotta contract the work out to the specialist to get the assembly line rolling to make money and decorate and “tune” for marketing. Damn shame.
Zenith made mov for many watchmakers. And I think JLC?? Not sure. One of those. It’s really interesting to be honest. But can’t beat and ETA on my hammys thos. My daily drivers
Hublot STILL uses inexpensive movements and Charging rediculous prices.
Panerai is just a joke a this point... how either of these companies are still in business is beyond me.
I guess it's people with more money than brains... or a fool and his money are soon parted.
Enjoyed this I am currently wearing my Casio a 158 we but early today was wearing one of my Invicta aviators
Why would anyone pay extra for a decorated movement in a watch with no display back??
I'm not convinced that this is as big a revelation as you're making it out to be. Most watch enthusiasts are aware of these untruthful representations.
Do people who buy these $20,000 and up to $100,000 watches really know or care what's inside of them? My feeling is if you got the kind of money to buy super expensive watches you're probably not a watch geek. Just like the people who buy exotic cars probably couldn't tell you a thing about the engine in them.
Exactly! The noisy ones are but a tiny minority and not even their primary market. Most of these geeks will rant and whine about almost everything but actually purchase very little.
They are not the market.
Nice to see some personal grooming improvements since i last visited your channel. Good job.
What about Bremont? They also aren't exactly clear on their "in-house" movements which are actually originally designed by Horage. Bremont are essentially the British version of Hublot.
A modul- chronograph movement in a Panerai is cheeky !😠😠And then you know what they think about their customers !
That crown guard alone on Panerais is enough to put me off.
The fact remains, nothing justifys the costs... Its been going up some more too and it is silly.
And how about all the social media myths every body promotes about this brand and that.
We r being mislead all the way dude..
Great video ,I’ve got a Pam 1033 I’m sure it’s in-house movement, thanks 👍🏴🙏
What about iwc. Not only the older models. Even the "new" pilots chrono 41 movement is also said to be heavily inspired by eta. Also what about breguet
IWC is under the same umbrella with Pam. Just as shit!
A view from the UK. well done. I have been banging on for years about this. How much of the cost of a watch is in the movement. I've got a funny feeling that should you or i pursue this line of investigation, you would be very unpopular very quickly. Even "in house" made movements have components mass produced on machines for assembly. Rolex is a good example & admit to making 800,000 units a year so economies of scale come into play here regarding cost to manufacture. Yet this brand sells at ludicrous prices. There is an old saying in marketing which is; Create an image and sell that image. Off-Road 4x4 vehicles are a good example. My own passion in horology are the hand crafted movements such as the Lange & Sohne, Vacheron Constantin etc.
Tag Heuer said 100% designed in house not made in house
3 brands I would’ve never bought before seeing this video. This just reinforced what I already thought of these crap brands.
I. Seeing the term “manufacture” used more than “in house” in my research for my next grail watch.
In happy with my seiko 5 gmt ssk005 .
"In house" is cool, but not everything. A good movement is a good movement even in a foreign case.
Send a copy of this vid to the marketing department of each of the offenders. Hoooo-eeee!
Great video! Thank you for telling the truth!!! Keep busting the fraud!
Well... That's the Panerai Luminor Quaranta PAM01372 off my collection list. I followed up your video with a search across multiple platforms and watch sites, including Panerai, but couldn't find anything other than a reference to movement being 'automatic' and then a load of faff about watch straps, date windows, power reserves, and sunburst dials, with Panerai bombarding the viewer with random images of models trying to give Balenciaga a run for its money. What I found (or to he precisely the lack thereof) was enough for me to think twice. Thanks for the heads up.
I love your channel , always looking forward to seeing everything you post . Keep up the good work .

Lack of critique and critical media is a real problem.
Thank you for the update on these brands
In house isn’t a big deal but lying about it should entitle all owners to return the watch for a full refund of original msrp without a receipt.
Seiko movements are reliable and available. I can understand why luxury brands use them. Too bad they are not more transparent about their use. I will never understand luxury. Maybe you're paying for "bling".Great content, as always.
Better have your lawyer on speed dial.
🎉 Great Channel...thanks for the info 👍
Always enjoy them. Thank you.
If the folks at Panerai cannot discern between their own watches and fakes what does that say about the quality of their products? Hmmm
Those dog brands are NOT watchmakers! All they are is simply Case makers 👎👎👎
Very informative video. The big corporates lie, and they are shameless about it. Well, it's your money. Do proper research before putting your money on these so called "luxurious" brands.
