The is the best explanation on RUclips of the Dorian mode in popular music and by implication in other forms of music too. Many thanks for the insightful examples. Your other videos are equally good. Clearly a talented singer and guitar player. Good luck to you.
Kinda bums me out that RUclips videos like this came out 30 years after I started to learn how to play guitar 🎸. To anyone who is far enough along to understand what she’s teaching, this would have been worth all the weed in my duffle bag back in the 70’s & 80’s 😊😊😊 !!!!
Preach it! Maybe I would still be only an average lead player, but I would have gotten to my pinnacle much faster with youtube teachers like Rhinebeck.
I have been making slow progress with understanding modes for a few months, but these lessons are a game changer. Thank you. I can’t wait to get to my guitar lesson on Thursday.
Oh man !! Thanks for keeping this so simple !! This is Extremely Helpful to me. Nothing better when the light bulb💡 comes on because of the way you explain it. THANK YOU !! I’m subbing Immediately !!!
Excellent examples thank you I knew how to play the Dorian scale by ear but would get lost in the middle of the leads thanks to your examples I can see where I’m going now, your awesome, God Bless!!!
Excellent video. Starting to explore modes after 15 years of not playing and using my notebook and pen along with your examples really helped to refresh my understanding of Dorian. All about the tonality.
Parts of this were over my head which is great because that's how you learn. You don't learn from stuff you already know. You build on that stuff. Thanks for a great lesson. This is a keeper. I have fun tracking down similar if not identical chord progressions like Moondance and Billie Jean and Riders on the Storm and The Story in Your Eyes and a Boz Skaggs tune that escapes me and Dancing Madly Backwards by Captain Beyond (remember them?) And I thought I heard a little Locomotive Breath at the end of your Jewel example. Not quite, it would have to end where it began on the Am. Fun stuff. Just stumbled into Scarborough Fair about a month ago. Subscribed. Haven't done THAT in a while.
Thank you so much for this making this video. There are many video that speaks about how to construct modes, but this video shows how to apply the mode. I really benefited from this video. Erin is a very gifted teacher!
Love it - subscribed. I was doing an Dm, Am, G progression tonight trying to get the dorian sound with the D and the 6th B - but it really sounded Aeolian - so this video really helped me out. Thanks!
What a great video. And what a great voice on top of illustrating examples on the guitar. Only recently got ho modal playing is mostly about the chord progression. Scale follows along. Great lesson. Thank you!!!!
@@RedHookGuitar2 Awesome!! 2 Quick questions, 1. How do the concepts of tension and release work on the Dorian mode? In a regular major (Ionian??) the chords V and vii' generate that longing for the Tonic. Is there a Dominant chord that causes that tension on Dorian? 2. What stops us of thinking that a song in Dorian is on a regular major? for example, in "who will save your soul" one could say that the song is in G and the progression is ii - IV - I - V. I'm a beginner in theory, hope it's not a silly question. haha Thanks!
@@jutopri good questions. Modal tunes are different in that they have a way of floating around in more of a repeating harmonic pattern. The Santana songs are just two chords, but the pull is always to that one minor chord. Modal songs are usually just a few chords that center around a distinguishable “sound.” I usually think of the first chord in a progression as setting the tone to whether it’s minor or major and go from there. In Who Will Save Your Soul, sure you could think of it as diatonic in the key of G, but saying it’s in G Major to me implies a Ionian or Major sound, when the progression has a very minor tonality. It’s not necessarily wrong to say that. However, since the progression is minor with a major four chord, a friendly minor sound if you will, that would be Dorian. It makes more sense to approach it with the scale from a lead guitar perspective. Would you start playing on the G or the A? I would start on the A with that Am chord and play from there, which would lead you through the Dorian mode.
You are freakin Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!,I'm a bass player, and OMG you have taught me SO MUCH!!!!! What Prince songs are Dorian?. You need a Pateron page,I would sign up for sure!!!!!!!!!!
yes very good lesson this is what I was looking for Can you make a video lesson like this one for each mode? To learn how to do the chord progressions for each mode
To me dorian will always mean the opening of "dark star" by the grateful dead from the "live/dead" album. Free, floating. structureless. Just the mood and feeling of dorian, suspended in space
Thank you, this is a great lesson! Hint: use a microphone near your mouth and another in front of your amp. Your voice is a bit difficult to hear with only a room mic.
Dickie Betts doesn't use the dorian scale for uses the Minor Hexatonic scale which is 1-2-b3-4-5-b7. It's the dorian scale without the 6th degree used for the i-IV progression the allman brothers uses the hexatonic scale for some reasons the minor chord to a Major chord the i-IV progression you use the hexatonic scale 1-2-b3-4-5-b7 which the 6th degree is taken out. The Hexatonic scale is made of two triads a Major 2nd or Minor 2nd part. I'm not sure why the Allman brothers use the Hexatonic scale often but also Derek and the dominos used it since Duane Allman used it to harmonize with eric claptons parts. its used to harmonize guitar parts and play triads a semitone or tone part from each other. If you know examples of how to use the hexatonic scales and playing triads a tone apart from each other to create the hexatonic scale would be nice youtube lesson
This is what is needed. If you can say to yourself 'Oh! Dorian is the 'Oye Como Va' scale you have a far better sense of the context it gets used in and licks which are typical of the mode. Thanks. Is Planet Caravan by Black Sabbath Dorian?
Please forgive but I'm struggling with modal harmony. That said, at 3:10 you identify a 4 chord Bb11. Isn't your voicing a Bb7sus4 (I'm not seeing a major 3rd)? And wouldn't a 4 chord major 3rd "D" note more firmly establish this song as being in F dorian? Also the C7#9 is a Dom 5 chord that I often hear in Aeolian wherein it's major 3rd is described as "borrowed" from the parallel major key creating 5-1 functional Aeolian harmonony?
Is That Happy Feeling (Eli Wala Dong) by Ghanian Warren Akwei in Dorian? I can't find the sheet music bcz they have it only for songs (it was a big hit as an instrumental) or songs that are well-known (the original is obscure, n I can't even find the lyric for it).
Hello! Thank you for the video. If you don't mind, I have a question. In the example song ( Van Morrison- Moon dance ) of Am key, I know that the case like F# note is Dorian Mode. But I don't know how to explain Bb note in Bass line How can Bb note explain?
It’s technically a Jazz/Rock song, so that Bb in the bass line is a chromatic passing tone that connects the two chords, providing moments of dissonance and then resolve. It’s a walking bass line, so it’s common to use chromatic movement. The melody of the song and improvisation over the two chord vamp is a definite Dorian tonality though.
@@RedHookGuitar2 Thank you so much for your answer. I finally understood. !! I'm studying 'Mode' through your Examples of Mode videos. Can I ask you two more questions about Van Morrison-Moon dance and 'Mode'? That's the part I was really curious about.
I don't get why you don't just call it the key name instead and then see the chord as a tonal centre for that pool of notes.I enjoyed your playing and explanation though.Thank you.
I think Dickey Betts is playing the Dorian Mode in this melody but during the rest of the song he adds in the blues root flatted 5th. I think Dickey Betts plays the flatted 5th in allman brothers whippering post & In Memory of Elizabeth Reed by using the Dorian scale and adding in the flatted 5th note.Watch the video if you think this is Dorian mode or what mode?ruclips.net/video/sa6Tq2o2K34/видео.html
