Pure Genius. This version hurts my heart so very much, when I say Genius I give that credit to the whole band, how they just flow in the same direction as Adam's improvised lyrics, paints and incredible picture of a conversation between two people. Every time I hear a different version of this song it makes it better because its the same song but different and gives us more to love. *Small town afternoons* love it. So happy I was there that night!
Fabian, I found that version years ago and fell in love with this song - yet again. It's probably my favorite song written oddly in my life. I believe Adam is more outward in Pinkpop, but I also hold this version very dear as well. It's strange, because both versions (this and Pinkpop '08) are the same artists, band members (I think) and even emphasis on emotion, but they sound like two different songs with a common purpose. Also, the performance on Letterman is remarkable, even if they were still an early band with less self-innovation of lyrics and atmosphere.

I usually get disappointed when a band changes a song from the studio version to an unrecognizable live version. However, I have been listening to these guys and going to their concerts since the 90's and the evolution of this song shows a depth of emotion that relates to and is reflected in so many of their songs. This is a work of art. Brilliant.
Me and my mom's favorite band together. I've seen them 3 times with my mom, and her and I always talk about how no show is the same. The way they're able to turn a regular song into a 10 minute song, and you NEVER lose interest. They do it right. I'll be a counting crows fan until I die. I'll forever think of mom when I hear this band too.

I hate where this song takes me, but I keep coming back to it, because it's SO....... real. I can't help but think, we need to be more kind to people. You just never know what they're going through.
Adam is known for being melodramatic during his performances. That's not to say he fakes it but embraces each feeling to the fullest. However, when he moved his hands to his mouth or chews on his fingers like he does on the "Come Outside" part here, I think he is baring his soul for everyone to see. I've noticed him do this on a few live performances and it always seems to be when he is most emotional and most vulnerable. It's pretty incredible for him to relive his past horrors for the audience and stand emotionally naked like that. I also think he does it for himself to remind himself of how far he's come.
Absolutely incredible performer. Adam sings all of his songs the way he feels that day because he doesn't believe in trying to recreate the emotions he was feeling when he wrote the song. Thus creating a beautiful and unique experience for every song he sings.

everytime adam sings this, it’s like he’s trying to piece together stray memories he has of a girl. every time, the story gets larger and more detailed; it’s coming back to him slowly, fictional or not. and we’re witnessing it first hand through these live performances. this is fucking art, man. this is it. counting crows as a whole is horribly underrated, but adam especially, is the best writer, the best artist in my mind. who else can bend emotions this easily, this vaguely, this powerful? he perfectly captures how scattered a persons brain is after losing someone, how the memories come and go as time passes on. no one else can write the way he writes.
Too all the idiots saying they prefer the studio version.... listen to the studio version?? The improvisation and emotional intensity is what keeps the real fans flocking to all these beautiful live versions. So BEAUTIFUL PUT ME INTO TEARS ❤️❤️😭
... it seems like any and every version l hear ... l have to hear it over and over! l lost all my music in a fire and now l feel it coming back aglow and a flame burning deep... this is the best one that resonates even deeper... thank you! THIS IS FOR BRITANNY as she knows what it means to me too when she listens to it and the reads the lyrics !
I NEVER TOLD HER THIS, NOW SHE SHOULD KNOW!....slowly every part of this lingers!

what a powerful performance I cried... lol
everytime adam sings this, it’s like he’s trying to piece together stray memories he has of a girl. every time, the story gets larger and more detailed; it’s coming back to him slowly, fictional or not. and we’re witnessing it first hand through these live performances. this is fucking art, man. this is it. counting crows as a whole is horribly underrated, but adam especially, is the best writer, the best artist in my mind. who else can bend emotions this easily, this vaguely, this powerful? he perfectly captures how scattered a persons brain is after losing someone, how the memories come and go as time passes on. no one else can write the way he writes.
Gord Downie ... Adam is on the same kinda level as him ... it's a rare craft
This was truly an amazing performance.
Seeing you tomorrow night in Tampa. I am crossing one more thing off my bucket list. 6/16/2024....I cannot wait to see you.
Ive listened to 20 live versions of this song and this can not be touched
Beautiful song ...❤
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL..
masterpiece !!!!!!
Some may not like the Alt's but after listening to them for 20+ yrs the Alts make going to the shows that much more exciting 2.5 decades later
The best lyrics of any song I ever heard. How do you write a song so good?
Seeing these guys in June. Can't wait!
Just saw them in San Fransico last night and that song was incredible... I don't think I have ever seen any singer put so much into a song live..
If you want to hear it the way it was recorded, go listen to the album.
This song is insane & I love that he threw in some stuff from his Sordid Humor days.
Too all the idiots saying they prefer the studio version.... listen to the studio version?? The improvisation and emotional intensity is what keeps the real fans flocking to all these beautiful live versions. I’d like to see you be able to breathe new life into something you made 30 years ago every night.
I would loove to be sitting next to the ocean at night listening to this song.🏖️🌺🌊
I love the lyrics..
Love, love this song,! One of my favorite versions!
completely amazing
