This is a lovely song, well sung by Morten. Some nice musical and lyrical touches to what is a simple melody, particularly the refrain with Neil Tennant backing Morten’s main vocal … believe me, excellent 👍🏼

Written by the Pet Shop Boys for Morten, I think the others have mentioned it was written by them and that later they recorded their own version, but the important point is Morten is on record actually sayiing that they offered it to him for his album and he was very happy to accept. They sing the backing vocals, most notably towards the end. I really love this Morten version of the song….he sings it with such beautiful expression to the words…💕

Written by the Pet Shop Boys, this one goes back to their 2000 album "Release" and the track "I Get Along" on which "Listening" is based on or at least heavily borrows from. The Boys included their own version of this song as a B-Side on their 2012 single "Memory of the Future". The same year that Morten released this album.

This song is (to me) a song of love. Not necessarily romantic love but just love. As Matt suggested just talking and have someone listen that wants to hear it all is a HUGE tool for staying mentally balanced. Thoughts lead to other thoughts and the mind can go in strange directions but letting it out when it all gets too much is a big thing.
Wonderfully honest and heartfelt Mortens tone is one of concern and non-judgement. Euphoric keyboards hold the songs opening and the chorus is celebratory. 10/10

Okay…I do have to say something.
First off, I love reading all the comments from below and your Comments, Matt, with how much you love the song and what it does for you. Love hearing how much you love the album too, Matt.
Boy, I do wish I could discover this joy it brings people. I guess I am really picky now with Morten, it seems.
When I first jumped back in this A-ha journey, I heard stuff that Morten could do like “Manhattan Skyline”, “IBLY”, all of EOTSWOTM, all of Memorial Beach, many songs on other albums with that deep voice, with the raspiness, with the extra embellishments and sounds, with all the passion, all that emotion. Also a lot of Wild Seed, the song “Heaven’s Not For Saints”, “A change is gonna come”, the Vogts Villa album…well…it’s like someone presented me with the most amazing Italian dish…a rich sauce full of amazing spices and complex flavors with the most amazing cheese that melts in your mouth. I am in total love. ❤️ Then, I hear this album and some other stuff and it’s like they hand me a plate of buttered noodles and say “Isn’t this just as amazing?” Hmmmm…well…not to hurt feelings but no, no it really isn’t to me, unfortunately. I am truly learning I am just spoiled I guess, with a certain style and my brain just doesn’t want to accept anything else. 🤷🏻‍♀️
It does kinda remind me of Roxette. Marie Fredriksson was that amazing Italian dish to me. I get it. When she died, Per needed to move on. I listened to some of his new stuff and he had a woman singer with a strong voice. I was loving it. He then went a completely different direction with a woman who did have a beautiful voice, but it was just so soft. To me, it is buttered noodles to the amazing Italian dish, but others love it. Hey, it’s all opinions. I am happy people are so into this album and it makes them happy. I will just sneak quietly into the night and go back to the Morten stuff that makes me happy. 😅❤

You know, your reaction might be a bit different in different circumstances. I have no idea how I would react to this album if I only heard most of a-ha's and Morten's albums in the course of a couple of years (or less than that), like you. It's funny to think of myself having access to everything at the same time, it changes everything completely. A lot of the emotional weight would be lost, and then I suppose I would react to the songs and albums in a more "objective" way.
Like I said, I can't tell how I would feel about this album in those circumstances, but it's very possible that I would, like you, just put it aside, and focus on the best stuff. 🤷‍♀
But when you look at it "historically", things are not like that. It was 2012, a-ha had said goodbye "forever" at the end of 2010, when Morten released this we were so eager for it! It wasn't a-ha, but it was the closest it could get to a-ha, and we were craving for it. And they knew it (Morten, manager, whoever...), so Morten was announced everywhere as "the voice of a-ha" and even sang a-ha concerts in his solo tour! 😳 (Which I found very cringy, to be honest...)
Even if I knew right away that this was not the direction I expected from Morten, I took it as it came, and with pleasure! 🤗 What I have always said is that this album, like FOTM, hasn't stood the test of time for me. I grew tired of both of them and I don't listen much to either, but when I hear the songs I can still recall the excitement, and nostalgia is very powerful. 😉 Most of all with my favourite songs, which have that extra emotion attached to them, even if now, considering all the albums as a whole, I wouldn’t put them among my favourites.
Of course, happily there are people that genuinely enjoy this album for what it is. 🙂 What I am saying is that maybe even you would be able to enjoy it more if you had been through what a-ha/ Morten fans have been at the time. 😉

@@SofiaMarques18Those are some very good points,Sofia. I am curious if I would have followed A-ha and they announced they were “done”, would I have been just overly excited that Morten had put ANYTHING out? That ANY of them put anything out and I would eat it up, no matter what? Hmmmmmm…I don’t think I have anything to compare it to. I am trying to think of anything similar. 🤔I don’t know. Maybe since I don’t think I would have had a crush on him, physically, but had a crush on his voice and style, that maybe I could still trust my judgement on what I was hearing?
It is a good point and I guess I will never know there. 🤷🏻‍♀️
I mean, I know how that certain style makes me feel and that I can have that with some other artists. I love Alannah Myles’ “Black Velvet”. Her voice and the style of the song just…whew…does similar things that Morten’s style I love does. I checked out other stuff of hers and it wasn’t the same style voice or music. It was just okay, but didn’t grab me. Like Roxette above. I love Per’s gravelly but kinda softer voice with a strong woman’s voice. When he is with the woman with the softer voice, it doesn’t do much. I think I am just into the stronger, more emotional, “Umpf” stuff. I do like a few songs Morten does when it’s softer, but they’re few and far between.🤷🏻‍♀️
Okay well maybe NKOTB? Of course, I believe mostly I liked their music as a teen because I had a crush on Donnie. Although I would have to say it’s not like they were bad. I mean, two of them had some serious voices. One as a teenager and even now could go deep and high and had serious talent. The other had a kinda Frank Sinatra style and was really good. The other three, including Donnie, weren’t horrible, but their singing was nothing like the other two. Donnie was/is an amazing drummer and rapper for sure. Anyway, so they did break up and then they did get back together in their 40’s and still do stuff. I do have nostalgia and I do love to listen to their stuff from the late 80’s/early 90’s. I tried their stuff now and it just doesn’t do anything for me. Well, just one single does. I admit that when I hear that one song and I see Donnie, my heart does go pitter patter with nostalgia a bit and I am into it. Their other new stuff doesn’t do anything for me. I am not sure if this is a good comparison? I don’t remember being terribly devastated when they broke up. I think maybe I realized they were older and probably wanted to pursue other things?🤷🏻‍♀️ They were ACTUALLY a boy band and A-ha is ACTUALLY a different kind of thing, so maybe not a good comparison? I do think I was emotionally attached to NKOTB though, so I don’t know. Hmmmm…Anyway 😋

It’s what came to my head to try to explain what I mean. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Truthfully though, I think this stage in my life, my tastes have changed a bit. I think I am just into more jazzy, bluesy, rocking, folksy, emotional stuff. I am liking the stronger voices with emotion too. Like I was totally eating up Jon Batiste and the Black Puma’s close to around the time I got back into A-ha. That’s when I ate up MB and EOTSWOTM and some of Morten’s style similar. I think that has a lot to do with it. I just went to a festival over the summer and they had this amazing bluesy/rock band playing. This person singing and playing guitar was just slaying it and I ate it up. I sat down and watched the whole performance. My body and mind were so into it. It’s just a style that attracts me for sure. Just not into the Out of my Hands style.🤷🏻‍♀️
Haha, I bet I could be original with that comparison of amazing Italian dish to buttered noodles. 😂

Surprised you didn't pick up on Neil Tennant's backing vocals. Their own version was a b-side to their Memory Of The Future single. It's a lovely song and reminiscent of their track I Get Along in some ways. Thematically a bit like Chiquitita - tell me your troubles, I'll listen, you'll feel better.

It's not easy to pick up on Neil's vocals (for an average ear, at least). I didn't know it was Neil singing the backing vocals for years and I used to think it was Morten himself doing the (layered) backing vocals. 😛 Well, in my defence, when I have Morten's voice at the forefront, my ears and brain don't really pay much attention to what's going on in the background. 😁

Wow, judging by the views and comments on this video, this song is a hit! 😊
It is one of my favourites on this album, though I don't enjoy the production that much. I am not in the least am expert, but as Shell would say it lacks "umph" and is "too polite". 😁 Seriously, I have read so many of Shell's comments that I think I can feel what she feels when she says that. 😉
As others have said, Morten just sings it so well that it must be the main element that makes me like to this song. I like the melody, it's a good song, but - brace yourself and try to forgive me - when I listened to the Pet Shop Boys version I hated it. 😳 So, Morten clearly makes all the difference to me. 🤷‍♀
I wasn't even aware the Pet Shop Boys had recorded it too until recently (I mean, maybe a couple of years ago), when I found it by chance on YT. Rounding up what others have already said (and maybe making it a bit clearer?), they wrote this for Morten but then released it in December 2012 (quite a few months after Out Of My Hands was released) as a b-side for their single "Memory Of The Future". (I have never heard of that song at all, I have just made a quick search for this comment. 🤓 Just to clarify that I don't know anything about the PSB discography.)
Great reading of the lyrics, Matt. Completely agree with you. They're not difficult lyrics at all, but you summed it up very well. Haha, I have never paid so much attention to the lyrics as today, to be honest. Listening with you does that to me, because I know you're paying attention. 😉

    • @shelld1261
      @shelld1261 10 месяцев назад +1

Yep, that is where my brain went, Sofia.🙈
I just listened to the Pet Shop Boys do it and really, that didn’t make it any better for me.🙈
I have listened to a few other Pet Shop Boys songs. I can admit, just the popular ones though that played on the radio. I liked those better.
I want to like it. The music is really cool and the words are great. To me though, it’s just the style of how it’s sung both by Morten or them. It’s just kinda there. I don’t feel the feeling in it that others do here. To me, they are all singing it in a style of almost monotone. Yep, no umph, no real feelings. I do seem pretty alone there, well, seems you feel it a bit. Ah well, I guess really this just isn’t my album at all. I truly am more of a lover of Morten’s voice and music in a different style, it seems. Just all opinions, of course. 😋
I will just leave my thoughts here for I feel to bad writing my own comment and saying this stuff. I feel like a Debbie Downer.😂
This album with the photo used for the cover and ALL but one song are just not my kind of Morten. 🥱🥱🐌🐌
May others keep enjoying it. I’ll stick to the Morten I am into. You know what one that is. Sigh….🎸🎷🥁🔥🤟🏿🤯🤤❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥🥰🥳

So first answer is relatively soon, probably in the coming month to start. As people will know, I've still been sorting the process of shooting video-reactions/watchalongs, and now that I've been doing more TV watchalongs, I've been getting better at it and finding the right sound levels. Plus I wanted to start with some music-videos related to stuff I've wanted to talk about for a while, but eventually I will react to a-ha and other music-videos.
As for the Super-Thanks thing, I'm confused by that myself, as you're right---sometimes the tab is there, but sometimes it's only the Share tab in that spot. So I'm not sure, maybe it relates to different copyright protections of different tracks? Either way, I appreciate the attempt at a Super-Thanks!
