This is a lovely song, well sung by Morten. Some nice musical and lyrical touches to what is a simple melody, particularly the refrain with Neil Tennant backing Morten’s main vocal … believe me, excellent 👍🏼
Written by the Pet Shop Boys for Morten, I think the others have mentioned it was written by them and that later they recorded their own version, but the important point is Morten is on record actually sayiing that they offered it to him for his album and he was very happy to accept. They sing the backing vocals, most notably towards the end. I really love this Morten version of the song….he sings it with such beautiful expression to the words…💕
Written by the Pet Shop Boys, this one goes back to their 2000 album "Release" and the track "I Get Along" on which "Listening" is based on or at least heavily borrows from. The Boys included their own version of this song as a B-Side on their 2012 single "Memory of the Future". The same year that Morten released this album.
This song is (to me) a song of love. Not necessarily romantic love but just love. As Matt suggested just talking and have someone listen that wants to hear it all is a HUGE tool for staying mentally balanced. Thoughts lead to other thoughts and the mind can go in strange directions but letting it out when it all gets too much is a big thing. Wonderfully honest and heartfelt Mortens tone is one of concern and non-judgement. Euphoric keyboards hold the songs opening and the chorus is celebratory. 10/10
Okay…I do have to say something. First off, I love reading all the comments from below and your Comments, Matt, with how much you love the song and what it does for you. Love hearing how much you love the album too, Matt. Boy, I do wish I could discover this joy it brings people. I guess I am really picky now with Morten, it seems. When I first jumped back in this A-ha journey, I heard stuff that Morten could do like “Manhattan Skyline”, “IBLY”, all of EOTSWOTM, all of Memorial Beach, many songs on other albums with that deep voice, with the raspiness, with the extra embellishments and sounds, with all the passion, all that emotion. Also a lot of Wild Seed, the song “Heaven’s Not For Saints”, “A change is gonna come”, the Vogts Villa album…well…it’s like someone presented me with the most amazing Italian dish…a rich sauce full of amazing spices and complex flavors with the most amazing cheese that melts in your mouth. I am in total love. ❤️ Then, I hear this album and some other stuff and it’s like they hand me a plate of buttered noodles and say “Isn’t this just as amazing?” Hmmmm…well…not to hurt feelings but no, no it really isn’t to me, unfortunately. I am truly learning I am just spoiled I guess, with a certain style and my brain just doesn’t want to accept anything else. 🤷🏻♀️ It does kinda remind me of Roxette. Marie Fredriksson was that amazing Italian dish to me. I get it. When she died, Per needed to move on. I listened to some of his new stuff and he had a woman singer with a strong voice. I was loving it. He then went a completely different direction with a woman who did have a beautiful voice, but it was just so soft. To me, it is buttered noodles to the amazing Italian dish, but others love it. Hey, it’s all opinions. I am happy people are so into this album and it makes them happy. I will just sneak quietly into the night and go back to the Morten stuff that makes me happy. 😅❤
You know, your reaction might be a bit different in different circumstances. I have no idea how I would react to this album if I only heard most of a-ha's and Morten's albums in the course of a couple of years (or less than that), like you. It's funny to think of myself having access to everything at the same time, it changes everything completely. A lot of the emotional weight would be lost, and then I suppose I would react to the songs and albums in a more "objective" way. Like I said, I can't tell how I would feel about this album in those circumstances, but it's very possible that I would, like you, just put it aside, and focus on the best stuff. 🤷♀ But when you look at it "historically", things are not like that. It was 2012, a-ha had said goodbye "forever" at the end of 2010, when Morten released this we were so eager for it! It wasn't a-ha, but it was the closest it could get to a-ha, and we were craving for it. And they knew it (Morten, manager, whoever...), so Morten was announced everywhere as "the voice of a-ha" and even sang a-ha concerts in his solo tour! 😳 (Which I found very cringy, to be honest...) Even if I knew right away that this was not the direction I expected from Morten, I took it as it came, and with pleasure! 🤗 What I have always said is that this album, like FOTM, hasn't stood the test of time for me. I grew tired of both of them and I don't listen much to either, but when I hear the songs I can still recall the excitement, and nostalgia is very powerful. 😉 Most of all with my favourite songs, which have that extra emotion attached to them, even if now, considering all the albums as a whole, I wouldn’t put them among my favourites. Of course, happily there are people that genuinely enjoy this album for what it is. 🙂 What I am saying is that maybe even you would be able to enjoy it more if you had been through what a-ha/ Morten fans have been at the time. 😉
Buttered-noodle slander! 😂🤣 But cheers, that does make sense, and who knows, maybe I would react differently if my experience of Morten’s singing prior to hearing this was different. Hard to say. But I really do love this album!

@@mattsnider2667 I have lost count of how many times I told you, including last time you did a Morten reaction. 😀 But you're right, too, I like it that you listen to the songs without knowing too much about them. I only thought you'd remember this piece of info, since you apparently like PSB so much (not me...). 😉
What can I say, I do find it a bit funny, but the joke is mostly on myself. I feel the ridicule of saying things over and over again (like the proverbial parrot) for no use. 😂
Nothing against your memory, don't feel bad. 😉
Haha, well I promise, I don't mean to make you feel silly or embarrassed. But I am serious when I say we should do regular chat-"meetings" on FB just so I can try to keep things in my front view-screen (so to speak). :)
@@SofiaMarques18 Trying to bring back old memories. They called me Pet Shop Boy at school. Matt made you say it, didn't he!
@@mattsnider2667haha I did tell you ages ago when you began the album 😂
Will you react to Undecided as well? I think it's a bonus track on the album...and also the best IMO.
Yep, Sofia is going to make that available to me! Cheers, Jesper, hope you've been well.
Hey Jesper, how have you been? Been a while since we’ve seen you here. Hope all is well.😊
You think Undecided is the best track on this album? Wow! 😯 Never heard anyone say that before. Such a shame that it was left out of the album, I really like it too. 🙂
If everything goes as planned, Matt will hear it in two weeks - stay tuned! 😉
@@SofiaMarques18 yes, I really think it stands out - maybe that's why it wasn't included on the original album - but personally it's my favourite. It's a bit of a mystery to me that it was excluded....kind of like with Driftwood.
@@shelld1261 Aloha :-) The ups and downs of life, you know. Been through a difficult time. Thanks for asking and noticing ❤🙏
Ok, what is it I am supposed to be listening for? Is Morten pining for the Fjords?
He's not an ex-parrot!
@@mattsnider2667 Helloooooo Polly, I've got a nice cuttlefish for you when you wake up, Polly parrot!
@@mattsnider2667 Parrot? What parrot? I missed the joke completely, but I have become very sensitive lately to references to parrots... 😂
Haha, I knew you would find this for that reason, Sofia! But it's a Monty Python reference, to arguably their most famous sketch---The Parrot Sketch, which features a deceased, ex-parrot that has shuffled off this mortal coil (and lots of other comedic expressions driving at the same point---the pet-store owner sold the customer a dead parrot).
@@SofiaMarques18 Don't listen to him, he is not British. He can only lay claim to Friends. Parrots are my domain!!!!
