This is different from the version I know, which is probably the radio mix. Neil Tenant is my most random celebrity encounter. He was arriving in Stockholm at the same gate I was departing in 2004. I didn’t approach him but I smiled and nodded. He returned the same.
Agreed, it's the most PSB's sounding of their collaborations, but the music was by Bernard and Johnny (the ravey piano riff was by Bernards brother), then Neil wrote the lyrics and melody. I absolutely love it, though I think the single version is superior as it doesn't have the musical breakdowns this one does and emotionally it flows better. At the time it came out I was living in London and life was a whirlwind of failed romances and one night stands so this track really spoke to me. I think it's Neil doing all the vocals but if anyone knows better they can correct me. I love how dreamy and romantic it is, how it soars at the end like you're in love. Wonderful.
If I didn't know better, I'd think this was a PSB track. Those high vocals put me in mind of One in a Million from Very, so yes, Neil can sing like that. I love the funky bass, how big it goes into the chorus along with the string synths and then the addition of the guitar riffs. I like the piano, too. The lyrics do seem to be about finding someone who won't disappoint you as others have, but the line "at the back of my head, I believe what you said" makes me wonder if our narrator fully believes it's true himself. Maybe his desire for a good relationship has him dreaming that it is real this time.
As someone who has been listening to both Neil and Bernard since the 1980s, I can tell those high-pitch harmonies are Neil's. He does occasionally go high, notably on the single Before.
Great song! But hey! Anything that is made from Sumner, Marr, Tennant, Low and with orchestral bits from Ann Dudley… it was the supergroup of the early 90s
This is so haunting, melancholy beautiful dance track, which played a lot radio in August 1992, never played after that. Even said it's PSB, but in some extenct even exceed it. Get's better in the end, background synth gives even more atmospheric impact on it with his instinguish falsetto vocals. Wish You have reacted to shorter radio edit, cause it's still the best one.
One of my favorites, not just of Electronic, but all songs.

Yes it was Neil singing the high notes
Always great on a sunny day.
Good review

The lyrics were inspired by DESENCHANTEE by MYLENE FARMER.
Love this one 👍🏻
❤
Great chorus. Agree re the 90’s-dance piano riff, not that it’s that offensive, but looking back it was everywhere at the time 😄
This song could have been on New Order Technique
This song is very...................Northern!
And wonderful! 😊
That piano is very "early 90s dance".
7 inch mix is a far better version... in my humble opinion. Recommend playing that
Right on, I'll do that one and the 12" Mix too. Cheers.
