Absolutely NOT underrated in any sense of the word. Multiple Oscar noms. It was everyone’s go-to weeper for decades.
Second biggest movie of the year! Right behind Jedi!
Not just nominations. It won best picture, director, adapted screenplay, actress, and supporting actor. Huge hit at the box office. It grossed 20 times its production costs.
This. Maybe underappreciated by younger generations but those who saw it know it well

Wasn't Ashleigh also avoiding black and white movies for a long time? Oh, and that's not putting blame on anyone. Well then they are missing out. I would say the same to anyone who only watches TCM and ignores new releases
Shirley MacLaine, who won a Best Actress Oscar for this movie, was Ouiser Boudreaux in Steele Magnolias. Both movies were funny until they make you Big Cry.
She was wonderful in The Apartment with Jack Lemmon.
She also starred in “The Apartment,” which was also a Best Picture winner. She started out in Hitchcock’s black comedy “The Trouble with Harry” and had a memorable role in the Peter Sellers film “Being There.” Most recently, she had a small recurring role on “Downton Abbey.”
She has been one hell of an Actress for many decades!!
I loved her on "Irma La Douce" (also with Jack Lemmon)

I kind of wanna see Ashleigh watch "An Officer and a Gentleman" with Debra Winger/Richard Gere. Lou Gossett Jr. just passed away and it's one of his most recognized roles.
Also, since she enjoys John Lithgow "The World According to Garp" would be interesting. No one reacts to that one.

This movie was famous when it came out. The concession stands and restrooms would run out of napkins and paper towels due to all the people crying.
Saw this while in college with a bunch of macho friends. For some reason we all had some sort of allergy attack at the same time as we left the theater because we all had to battle watery eyes.
I mistakenly clicked on this after misreading the title. I thought she was reacting to the classic film masterpiece, “Terms of Enrampagement”.
No one reacts to this they are too busy with Steel Magnolias, Beaches, Fried Green Tomatoes. This is the original tear-jeaker from 1983 (when I say original I mean for modern times). The next time I cried at the movies, like this one, was Bridges of Madison County. Call your mom, just to hear her voice or say I love you... Oh and thanks for being the first to finally react to this great movie !

It is FREAKY that nobody reacts to this. It was a huge hit, won big Oscars like Best Picture and for popular stars... it's got Nicholson, that should be enough alone. This needs explaining.
People react to what they think will get the most views. Since the majority films reacted to tend to cater mainly to a male audience, weepy dramas tend to be overlooked.
If this gets enough traction someone else will react and on and on. That’s how it works, for the ones that I follow anyway

I’ve noticed that no one reacts to Woody Allen movies, which I guess is a bit easier to explain.
The scene in the hospital where she is saying good-bye to her kids is one of the most emotional and heartbreaking scenes I’ve ever scene. Breaks my heart every time.
When the little boy nods, I totally lose it!
For me, it’s the scene where Shirley is angry about the pain killers… I’m in floods of tears every time
It's so smart on her deathbed for her to reassure her son, so he won't be as tortured by it later - "I KNOW YOU LOVE ME!" So often when people lose a loved one, they're tortured by, "I don't know if he/she knows how much I loved them..."
She didn't want her son to realize later how much he loves & misses her, & be tortured by it.
Emma's eldest son wears plaid top while Emma wears plaid bottom. He's her.
The tough son always gets me. Emma the Mom is so impressed by her son's dedication to being a stone that she smiles at him. Then hard-boiled Garrett shows up and takes little tough guy in hand and they just go look at a swimming pool.
"I'm in the mood for a big cry today" - well, this is certainly the movie for that
"About six hundred times" Most women will agree he has asked well enough and respond with a leg hug.
"An Officer and a Gentleman". Must watch. Debra Winger is fantastic in it. Louis Gossett Jr. (who just passed) won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Richard Gere can get it.

Another mother/daughter movie for your consideration is “Postcards from the Edge” which is based on the novel by Carrie Fisher…yes, that Carrie Fisher. The novel is based on Carrie’s life & her relationship with her mother, Debbie Reynolds. Meryl Streep plays the daughter while Shirley McLaine plays the mother. It also has Richard Dreyfuss, Gene Hackman, Rob Reiner, & Annette Benning, to name a few. J.D. Souther is in it as Ted…though he did some acting, he was mainly a songwriter/muscian/singer. He wrote songs for the Eagles did: Best of My Love, Heartache Tonight, & New Kid in Town. Also wrote songs for Linda Rondstadt & collaborated with James Taylor. There is also a reference to “The Valley of the Dolls” which was the 1st film Dreyfuss appeared in (1967 - uncredited) Oh, Liza Minnelli told Carrie the film resembled her own relationship with her famous mother, Judy Garland. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear to be in your library.

Rest in Peace to a legend in Hollywood, Jeannie Epper (January 27, 1941 to May 5, 2024). She was the first woman to win a lifetime achievement award for her stunt work. She doubled for Linda Carter in Wonder Woman, did the mudslide stunt for Kathleen Turner in Romancing the Stone, and drove on the beach in this movie with Jack Nicholson's stunt double Alan Gibbs.

Her "Renoir" was the painting she referenced at the beginning. Pierre-Auguste Renoir was one of the great French Impressionist artists of the 1800's and early 1900's.
I've often felt that Shirley was/is your spirit actor 😂. Thought you'd recognize Shirley from Steele Magnolias, but then again she really did hide herself so well into her character (Ouiser). I hope to see more of her on yer channel. I think you'd love her in Guarding Tess.

FWIW, I look at “older” in these terms: Since sound movies have been around since, roughly, 1930-and it’s the very rare reactor who will feature silent films (Movies with Mia being one exception)-that gives us about 95 years of movies to choose from. But let’s say 90, for the sake of argument and easy math. I divide the timeline straight down the middle. To me, then, “older” would logically mean “older than 45 years”; newer would be within the last 45 years. But a lot of reactors call anything made before they were born “old” or, worse, it’s “old” if it was made before 2000. As if they should ignore the previous hundred years of filmmaking.

My mom has pancreatic cancer and I spent all day in the hospital with her yesterday. Something as simple as a UTI can be really bad for chemo patients. I live 4 hours away from my mom and I call her everyday even if it's just to talk for 2-3 and I always make a point to tell her I love her. So yeah, call your parents. Tell them everyday that you love them.
My mother died 25 years ago and I haven't spent 5 minutes missing her. Being a momma's boy is nothing to be proud about.

Totally. I'd give anything to be able to call my mum again. Early 2000s I lived in Glasgow Scotland and parents in Aberdeen. Mum would always call a few times a week. Then sadly after Alzheimers and dementia took hold the calls got less frequent and then stopped. She passed in 2021. I miss those conversations so much. 😢

Warren Beatty is her younger brother and she just turned 90!!

Shirley McLaine is a terrific actor. She was famous in the 50's and 60's, then made a comeback in the 80's. If you want to see her young, one of my recommendations is The Apartment with Jack Lemmon (Grumpy Old Men).

When the lights came on in the theatre I saw this film in '83, there was not a dry eye in the house. Everybody just sat in there seats and sobbed. We all filed out of there like we had just been to a funeral. Thanks you for reacting to one of the best films ever made. God Bless.
Shirley played Ouiser in steel magnolias and has been a star for many decades, her brother is also Warren Beatty.
Just yesterday I was at the check out at the supermarket. As I joined the queue, and was about to put my groceries on the conveyer belt, the cashier looked at me and said that she might be a while. There were two young kids being served, the oldest couldn't have been more than about 12, and a younger kid about 10. A second member of staff was assisting.
I asked what the problem was, the kids had put sweets in a bag from the 'pick and mix' but didn't have enough money. The second member of staff was removing sweets from the bag, to lower the bill.
No brainer. 'It's ok, let them have them, and add it to my bill'. The kids were embarrassed enough as it was and needed this ordeal to be over as quickly as possible.
Both of these kids said 'thank you' several times each.
Not having enough money happened all the time before debit and credit cards. It was a HUGE anxiety of mine.

@@SeanHendy Hmmm, probably not. But there might be a UK equivalent. Either way it's funny to watch the snippets from the show on RUclips, because especially nowadays when they do their filming, there's almost inevitably someone who says "Where's John Quiñones?" (the host) or "This is like 'What Would You Do?'" or "This is like that hidden camera show!" Although they've really been reaching with some of their set-ups. Recently they had a couple talking about abortion, loudly, in a public place. Now, I can't speak for everyone, of course, but if I were having that discussion, it'd be at home. In private!

"Shirley MacLaine ... never heard of her" made me do a spit take. So many possibilities esp back in her younger days Gambit (1966), Two Mules for Sister Sarah, Irma La Douce. Even "What a Way to Go".
She's great in Postcards from the Edge. She also gets one of the biggest laughs in the Albert Brooks movie Defending Your Life. Not to mention she's Warren Beatty's sister. Besides, Ashleigh has already seen her in Steel Magnolias.

Deborah Winger was *luminous* in this movie (as in, well, EVERYTHING). I'm glad she did what she wanted with her life, but am kinda sad we didn't get more chances to see her virtuosity.

Have you completed the Debra Winger trifecta? Terms of Endearment, An Officer and a Gentleman, and Urban Cowboy? You have to see all three, they were three of the biggest movies of the time and all starred Debra Winger.

Sitting with your legs crossed is how I remember Shirley MacLaine, I had her 1989 VHS tape "Inner Workout" based on meditation and balancing your inner chakra's😮. Shirley was Weezer in "Steel Magnolias" she's one of Hollywood's best. Her brother also famous Warren Beatty look him up he's a hunk😂. A good movie to react to is 1961 "Children's Hour" with Shirley MacLaine and Anne Bancroft, it shows people's attitudes of gays in the 60's the movie is tragic, shocking and powerful! @@kbrown5523 They were all fairly close together in terms of release. Urban Cowboy was so true to life with the exception of Gilley's. That place has always been an absolute armpit and the movie makes it look sort of quaint.
Pierre August Renoir was one of the most famous Impressionist painters. Monet was famous for his landscapes. Renoir painted portraits and no artist painted women and children so beautifully. If someone has a Renoir painting, he or she has some bucks. One of Jack Nicholson's former girlfriends said he had a Picasso in his home.
Greta Garbo had a Renoir.
The movie starting with her being an overprotective mother thinking her baby has died in the crib and then ending with her baby actually dying…. I cannot 😭😭😭

This film is great for many reasons, but one of them is that it's a great example of Debra Winger's star quality. This was obviously her career pinnacle, with An Officer and a Gentleman coming out the year before. She continued to work for years but never achieved the kind of stardom her talent deserved.
And she still hasn't done anything for Louis Gossett Jr.
I was going to say, love Ms McLaine's performance and think she totally deserved the Oscar but Ms Winger is amazing as well. I think she was co-nominated as well. I understand they didn't always get along during the filming but I think that may have totally benefitted both their performances.

In an interview, Bette Davis was asked if there was an actress whom she thought was of her caliber, and she thought about it for a second, and then said that Debra Winger was an actor whom she thought was of her caliber, reminded her of her, did not produce another answer besides that. I do not know if there was ever a better compliment given to an actor.

I can't make any excuses for Jeff Daniels's character's behavior. But I would argue that I don't think he didn't WANT his kids, I think - as his mother-in-law told him - he recognized his weakness. He didn't think he could be the parent they needed and wanted better for the kids. It's heartbreaking, but I've known many people in that situation (my best friend was raised by his grandma for a similar reason). It's not about "doing the right thing" as a parent, it's about doing the best thing for the kids. I don't think Flap was happy about it, or relieved or anything like that. I think he just knew it was the right choice.

I remember watching the Academy Awards when Shirley won best actress and there was all that commotion about her interest in new age mysticism and past lives. I finally watched TERMS OF ENDEARMENT on VHS at home alone. Had to stop when the little brother quietly weeps at the hospital room door. Cried so hard I almost threw up.
My mom took me to see this movie when I was 12 and I wasn't interested because I thought it would be boring. It turned out to be one of my favorite movies of all time. It was my first time seeing Jack Nicholson and I became an instant fan. Every performance in this movie is so good right down to the kids.

I was 12 years old when this came out, and starting to enter my 'too cool for mom' phase. Also, being an ass to my younger brother. My mom told me then that one day when she was gone I would feel guilty about things I had said and done, and not to because she knew I loved her. I didn't learn until years later that this movie must have inspired her to say that, but I am happy she did because she's no longer alive and it still means a lot.
This and Steel Magnolias are two films my Mom had us watch one weekend. The tears just kept coming. My sister and I were so sad, Mom had to take us to Thrifty for an ice cream to make up for that.
And POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE with Meryl Street and Shirley, which get my vote for Bravest Actress In Film when Shirley appears in the hospital bed.
If she'd thrown in "Beaches" you probably would have gotten new clothes and a cat.

As someone who has been with my mom and dad many times in the hospital to advocate for them, i relate to Shirley demanding pain meds for her daughter.

I really expected a bigger reaction to "GIVE MY DAUGHTER THE SHOT!" That's like the most famous line, and gets me every time.

Shirley MacLaine is one of America's finest actresses. Another Best Picture winner she was in is the 1960 romantic comedy-drama _The Apartment._ Directed by Billy Wilder ( _Some Like It Hot_ ), it also stars Jack Lemmon. It won five Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Art Direction, and Best Film Editing. Also, MacLaine and Lemmon were both nominated.
Billy Wilder paired Lemmon and MacLaine together again in the 1963 romantic comedy _Irma la Douce._ MacLaine again received a Best Actress nomination, and Andre Previn won for Best Original Score.

When kids say this, it just means THEY had never heard of it and no one in their peer group has. Meaning it has not made a great transition to newer generations.

Shirley MacLaine is Warren Beatty's sister. She was also in Steel Magnolias that you reacted to. But my favorite of her many great films was The Apartment, in which she co-starred with a young Jack Lemmon (One of the two Grumpy Old Men).
Debra Winger turns 69 in three days, on my birthday. She was nominated for three Oscars, including for this role.

This movie definitely hits different with me as an adult. I’m married now with two little kids of my own. And my mom died of cancer 12 years ago. This is a very “real” story. And it makes you feel all the feels in a genuine way. Great movie.

James L Brooks made a great movie with Jack Nicholson called As Good as It Gets. He also directed Broadcast News.
As Good as It Gets is wonderful! Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt (Twister), and Greg Kinnear are all great in it.

Fabulous movie. Debra Winger was also terrific in it and she was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role alongside Shirley MacLaine, but MacLaine ended up winning the award.
I really appreciate that Ashley saw the daughters hypocrisy about cheating. Cheating is cheating and no one has the moral high ground haha
Maybe but Flap was irresponsible and had kids at home and didn't think twice about uprooting his family just for his POA..whereas Emma (and Sam) just sought comfort
This film takes on a lot more meaning when you know more about Shirley’s relationship to her real daughter. It adds layers to her performance when she plays someone’s mother.
I chuckled a bit when Jack said "You bring out the devil in me." cause a few short years later he played the Devil in the movie "Witches of Eastwick".

There’s a sequel “The Evening Star” it was a box office bomb but in recent years, it’s kind of gained a cult following. Juliette Lewis plays Emma’s daughter Melanie and Shirley MacLaine reprises her role as Aurora.
Evening Star was just McMurty's way to end Aurora's story, the same way Streets of Laredo was to give Call a proper send-off.
I've never cared what critics say, I think "Evening Star" was a worthy follow up to Terms of Endearment. I quite enjoy the movie.

It also brings back Jack Nicholson and brings in Bill Paxton RIP as well as Scott Wolf. The movie was 13 years later in 1996.

All the performances in this film are outstanding. But the most memorable scene and performance to me is the younger son saying goodbye to his mom. Truly heartbreaking.

Just because a movie bombs at release doesn't make it a bad movie. There are a lot of movies that are great even though they failed at the box office, such as Raging Bull, it's a Wonderful Life, The Wizard of Oz, and Citizen Kane.

Culture gave Shirley grief a long while after her ‘Out on a Limb’ book & movie were released but that lady can act. The ‘Virginia’ upbringing came out in this one. BTW, her best comedic role in our house’s opinion is “Guarding Tess (1994)” with Nick Cage. Mildly dark humor but fun.

For my 20th birthday (11/63), my sister took me out for dinner and a movie. This was the movie (dinner was Emil Villa’s, since you were wondering). It solidified my “meh” feelings about Jeff Daniels (don’t fret; I’ve come to appreciate him), and of course, I balled like a baby! It was funny, snarky, sweet, sad - all the things.

I’m really glad that you made room for this one, Ashleigh. There are so many movies that are well worth seeing and reacting to that nobody (or almost nobody) reacts to on RUclips, and a lot of them are from the last century but weren’t necessarily big blockbusters or genre films that appealed mostly to teenagers or young adults. Some of them were just very good dramas that touched the heart and illuminated the human condition, and don’t often get talked about by the usual film enthusiasts of today. Some do, but they usually get drowned out by talk about the franchises or the big moneymakers or the cult hits. But movies like this were often the backbone of the film industry for many years, and would get noticed by critics and at awards time, but the general public zeitgeist usually just takes them for granted. So it’s nice to see you shedding a little light on movies like this.
It's not underrated, it's just that most young people do not want to react to "old" movies.

So I heard Roger Corman passed away last night. Roger Corman was a legendary filmmaker, king of the B-movies, and launched so many careers. So yeah, definitely, I gotta recommend a movie to honor his passing. There are honestly so many horror movies I could choose from, but I think it really comes down to one choice: One of his Edgar Allan Poe movies. His Edgar Allan Poe are celebrated and regarded as some of Roger Corman's best work, and for good reason. Roger Corman tried his best to adapt the Poe stories while also being original and paying tribute to Poe. They're gothic movies dripping with atmosphere. If I had to suggest any of them, I would recommend either the 1960 movie House of Usher or the 1964 movie The Masque of the Red Death, if that's OKay? Those are the two best of the Edgar Allan Poe series. It'd be another reason to react to them. I think it'd make for a fun reaction 🙂

Of the films Corman personally rejected, I think X, The Man With the X-Ray Eyes is one of his best. Of his Poe films, The Raven is fun. It would give Ashleigh a change to see Price, Lorre, and Karloff together as well as a young Jack Nicholson.

Oppie Cunningham directed it. He complained about Corman not hiring enough actors. Corman told him, if you do a good job you will never have to work for me again.
Ron Howard plays a poor boy in love with a rich girl. Her father doesn't approve. She has steal a car. Then either the mother or father steals a car to chase them.
After a cop has his squad car stolen he commandeers a bus load of seniors. ( if my memory is right) and those are just a few of the stolen cars...

Pierre-Auguste Renior (Ren wah) is a very famous painter from 1841-1919 he's an early impressionist a good friend of Claude Monet (Mo-nea, another famous impressionist). Renior has paintings sell for over 3/4 of a million dollars, so the painting the mother owns is worth quite a lot.
OMG! I was just watching "Postcards From The Edge" yesterday for Mother's Day. It's my favorite Meryl Streep movie with Shirley in it. You should watch that one, too. It's based on Carrie Fischer's book about her and her mother, Debbie Reynolds. Beautiful and vulnerable film and Meryl sings in it too.

Woooo... idk if I'll make it through this reaction. The first time I saw this movie I cried so hard that my dad put my mom on the phone immediately. As soon as I told her what I'd watched she said "aw baby" and talked to me til I calmed down. When my mom passed 3 years ago, I couldn't help but think of this movie and how precious the relationship between mother and daughter is. I miss her everyday.
Larry McMurtry also wrote the novels The Last Picture show, which was made into a movie in the early '70s with Jeff Bridges and others; its sequel Texasville, some 20 years later, which was also made into a movie with Jeff Bridges and the same director; Lonesome Dove, which was made into a miniseries with Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, and Angelica Huston; He also wrote the sequel to this, Evening Star.
Lonesome Dove is the best thing ever filmed in my opinion.
Larry McMurtry also cowrote the screenplay for Brokeback Mountain.

I have been waiting for someone to react to this movie. I watched it 2 decades ago as a teenager and it still makes me cry.
Also, Shirley was in a movie with Anne Bancroft featuring ballet dance stars, Leslie Browne and Mikhail Baryshnikov in a ballet drama movie called, "The Turning Point." It is SO good. It came out in 1977.
I love the movie's message because it speaks about the consequences of making difficult choices in life and how that can affect you and the people around you. Plus, the ballet is fun to watch

As far as I can remember this may be the first movie she's seen with Debra Winger, who was the hottest actress in Hollywood for close to a decade. She really needs to hit a few of her movies. Thought she might do "An Officer and a Gentleman", after Lou Gossett Jr. died.
This was such a BIG movie when it came out in1983. My favorite movie with Shirley MacLaine is The Apartment.. Still watch it every New Years.

This movie always makes me cry at the end. I lost my mom when I was 16. So I always cry for the kids. I know it is a sequel call Evening Star. But I never watched it.
And to reference some of the things for the past in this movie. The Burger King restaurant use to look like that before they remodeled in the 90’s. And if you called someone on a Rotary phone. And it was busy the operator could do an emergency interruption. (I feel really old knowing this stuff)And the baby had croup. People usually run a steamy shower to help the baby.
Here's my story about this movie. A girl at work said she wanted to go to the movies. But she didn't want to see anything scary or that would make her cry. The original trailer focused on the funny scenes. So I said, let's go see Terms of Endearment. As soon as she went into the hospital, Colette loudly said, "YOU SAID THIS WAS FUNNY!!!". I was never so embarrassed in my life.
