Jessica Lange said that her grandkids were watching Tootsie on television, and didn't seem to know that it was her in the film. It was a scene with her and Hoffman as Dorothy. She said to them, "You know, that's Grandma in that movie." They looked closely, and said, "Which one?"
The casting director was Lynn Stalmaster, who cast almost 400 films in his illustrious career (died just recently, in 2021). He (yes, it's a he) cast Harold and Maude (1971), Superman (1978), First Blood (1982), The Untouchables (1987) and a gazillion other films. His name was so familiar to me growing up in an age where opening credits were a thing.
John: "I want you to know that for the record, Jeff, nothing happened here tonight." Jeff: "Thank you, John." Hilarious. Re-watch that scene and look at how much Bill Murray is trying not to crack up.
I love Hoffman's story about being so disappointed with how he looked as a woman and it making him realize how many interesting, brilliant women he ignored because they didn't meet his/society's standards of attractiveness.
@@itzakpoelzig330 He became a movie star because he was a good actor, and he got famous playing 'short, funny looking' characters. He wasn't a pin-up or romantic lead. Lots of short, funny looking women become successful actresses, but we tend not to notice that they're odd looking because they're neotenous, and we have wider parameters for 'pretty' than 'handsome'. Meryl Streep (who acted with Dustin in Kramer vs Kramer) is slightly odd looking, but she became a massive movie star. Bette Davis too. A modern example might be someone like Anya Taylor-Joy - she's objectively odd looking, but people think she's pretty, and she's a movie star.
Jessica Lange was a double nominee at the 1982 Oscars. She was nominated as Best Actress for “Francis” but won the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in this movie.

Teri Garr plays Sandy who played the lab assistant who ends up with Gene Wilder in “Young Frankenstein” & Richard Dreyfuss’ wife in “Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind.” One of my favorite actress. She plays Michael Keaton’s wife in “Mr. Mom,” another movie you should put on your list to watch. Keaton’s character loses his job & ends up being the “SAHM” while Garr gets a job. In 1985, at the height of her career, she was diagnosed with breast cancer & elected to have a double mastectomy with no reconstruction. She decided to talk about it which was a rarity back then…Hollywood actresses were to have this illusion of perfection plus women just didn’t discuss that topic publicly.
Teri Garr was also in "Mom and Dad Save The World" (1992) with Jeffrey Jones and Jon Lovitz. A very silly take on Flash Gordon with bright, colorful characters. This movie's failure at the box office is said to be the reason "The Super Mario Brothers" movie went from bright and colorful to grim and gritty.

That's what I meant. His unconscious social conditioning is that women should try to be attractive to men, period. And if you try hard enough, you'll succeed. (Privileged guy worldview.) Ergo, women who aren't attractive, don't try hard enough. So, of course, he was upset when he realized that all of those things are untrue. *shrug*
YAY!!!!!!! YOU'RE WATCHING IT!!!!!!!!! Everybody's fantastic. Dustin is perfect as Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels. However, for me, Teri Garr was my absolute favorite. I love her character's natural progression after their fight scene. It boosts her confidence and makes her more sure of herself and her talent. I love this movie so much that I bought the vinyl version of the film soundtrack for $4, lol. That final reveal is the best part. Almost every scene in this movie is perfection
The critic interviewing Dorothy on the cover of TV Guide is Gene Shalit, who was the film critic on “Today” from 1970 to 2010. He retired from there and is still alive at 98. He was a great personality on television and that cover was a quick way to show us that Dorothy was now nationally famous.
During the opening credits right when you made the 80's sensual sax comment, it showed Music by Dave Grusin. He's the "G" in GRP records, the company that launched the "smooth jazz" genre of the 80's-90's.
Fantastic reaction Ashleigh ❤ I love this film so much. My brothers and I would always be in pieces watching it as kids because Dustin Hoffman as Dorothy was the spitting image of our Aunt. Even down to the big glasses🤣
Tootsie is a great movie that time has sadly forgotten. I never hear anyone mention it anymore, and this is the first reaction to it I have ever seen. I would love to see you react to Oscar (1991), another forgotten movie (although to be fair it was never as popular as Tootsie). I think it is very underrated. It's not a great work of art, but it is very funny, it has a killer cast (Sylvester Stallone, Marisa Tomei, Don Ameche, William Atherton, Chazz Palminteri, Kurtwood Smith, Kirk Douglas), and is the vessel for my favorite Tim Curry character.
I saw this movie in a movie theatre with my dad when it was new in 1982. I must have been 10 years old, but I still loved it, and it's still one of my favorite movies.
I 💕 seeing you gush over young Jessica Lane. I was a teen in the 80' s & I was in awe of Jessica because she was involved with my teen crush Mikhail Baryshnikov . Jessica has major films in the 90' s but I have a soft spot for How to Beat the High cost of Living which was before Tootsie & which I think is a great time capsule of the time 😊
King story short. In Cincinnati while filming rain man my mom met Dustin Hoffman. I made a caricature of him and a note about how I loved tootsie. He sent me a lengthy note and autograph about loving the caricature and how much I loved tootsie. He wished me luck in my future as an artist. I still have that note framed and hanging on my wall.
Ashley, I have not even watched this review yet but I know you’re going to love it and I’m so glad you’re finally covering it. I have seen this movie, no kidding, about 30-40 times. OK some of those times it was just on in the background while I was doing housework or working on my computer. It is so friggin wonderful. I can’t wait to see your reaction. I know it’s going to be great. You made my morning. RIP Dabney.
Right off the bat this is making me smile and laugh I love this movie, I got out of the hospital after almost dying from my eating disorder and now I'm living my best life! I love you girl!
I bought the soundtrack in 1983. Like you, I just loved the feeling the background music gave me. Dave Grusin did the music for ‘On Golden Pond’ too (another Dabney Coleman movie well worth your time).
17:47 Answers to questions you never needed to know: Teddy pronounced it “Rooze-uh-velt”, Franklin (and, presumably, Eleanor) pronounced it “Rose-uh-velt”. You’re welcome.
Actually, Eleanor might have pronounced it like Teddy did-he was her uncle, after all, so she might have grown up with the same pronunciation. It was her maiden name as well as her married one.
For Dabney Coleman's best role(s) - Cloak & Dagger, a dark 80's spy thriller for kids 😅 Dabney plays dual roles and crushes them both. RIP You would also enjoy him in Dragnet, with Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd, and Beverly Hillbillies (an almost 9-5 reunion with Dolly & Lily Tomlin).
And Short Time. He's a cop about to retire. A urine sample switch makes him think he's going to die shortly after retirement with no insurance. But if he dies in the line of duty...
2:08 You say that bit about saxophone music, and immediately Dave Grusin’s name appears. “Goonies,” “Tequila Sunrise,” “The Firm,” “Mulholland Falls,” that guy got around. Now, you really need to see “Victor / Victoria” where Julie Andrews pretends to be a male drag queen to get a job. (And Robert Preston is her gay drag queen friend/confidante through the whole thing.)
Victor/Victoria is such a great film! I think it’s Blake Edwards’s best, and he had a lot of fantastic movies. Henry Mancini’s music is top-notch (“Crazy World” is one of my favorite songs), the script is hilarious, and the casting is spot-on across the board. Not just Julie Andrews and Robert Preston, but also James Garner, Lesley Ann Warren (“What’s with the soap?”), Alex Karras, and, my favorite, Graham Stark as the waiter.
Dabney died on my birthday. I vaguely used to know his daughter. She's a singer who goes by just her first name, Quincy. One of my favorite musical moments was during one of her shows at The Hotel Cafe. Her trumpet player, Stewart Cole, was sitting at the bar across the room from the stage. I was standing next to him. I thought maybe he had left the group. Mid song, he gets up and stands on the bar and plays his solo from there. The place is small enough to sound good. That was cool. Dabney's son was half of The Coleman-Dixon Line with my friend Chet Dixon. I only recently learned he was Dabney's son. The soap opera doctor starred in Police Academy. You have seen THREE Dabney Coleman films. He was in War Games.
I was right, you heard it here!!!! My Tootsie harassment campaign has finally paid off!! You're welcome, everyone! And special thanks goes to Kristian, Bolt, Cody, Tim, Grace, and even Tyler!! We did it, guys!!! The day has finally arrived!! Our work is done! What a time to be alive!!
In my unpopular opinion, this is the best movie of the 80's, and one of my favorite movies ever made! I could watch this literally anytime thanks to its brilliant acting and razor-sharp script!
Another great movie with a young Dustin Hoffman is "Kramer vs Kramer (also stars a young Meryl Streep) and "Sweet Dreams is a great movie that stars a young Jessica Lange and a young Ed Harris. Glad to see your reaction to this movie. One of my favorite Hoffman movies next to Rain Man and Kramer vs Kramer. You're always such a joy to watch, Ashleigh. You always make me smile.
My parents live right around the corner from the entrance to the soap-opera studio, and sometimes I walk down that street just to "re-enact" that last shot. 🤣
Mimes are real. My brother was a street performer in San Francisco, and we grew up with a famous mime, Don who did all of Mel Brooks mime bits, puppetry, and "shadow" choreography (Dracula dead and loving it). Mimes are used a lot in horror movies.
They filmed Tootsie near my home in Ulster County, NY. The Farm and Bar are located in Hurley, NY. The Bar was the Hurley Mountain Inn (where Michael gives the ring back to Les). The Farm was the Opdahl Home and all the Exterior shots were done there. Through a Connection I got to see them film some of the scenes. When I first arrived at the Farm I asked someone where Dustin Hoffman was. They pointed at a small group of people. A woman waved at me. I almost passed out later when I found out it was Dustin Hoffman in Drag. Dustin is such a perfectionist to prepare for this movie he went around dressed like a woman because he wanted to be as convincing as possible. I did get to meet Dustin Hoffman at the Inn. He is nice, down to earth guy.
Jessica Lange in 1976 King Kong with Jeff Bridges, if you want to see more Jessica Lange younger, but I also enjoyed her performance in Rob Roy with Liam Neeson they had great chemistry and it is a great story.
I saw this movie the day after graduation at the Great Lakes Recruit Training Center. My folks came to the ceremony and took me out to the movie. I fell in love with Jessica Lange as I'm sure all 18 yo sailors did.

Side notes: "The Coast" in entertainment means Los Angeles. The restaurant he sees his agent in is The Russian Tea Room, a sort of NYC artsy trope location. In the photo shoots, the guy before Andy Warhol was Gene Shalit, a art and film critic.
Not surprised you ,liked it - now that you've seen it, this is one of those movies you can come into the middle of and watch for a bit or to the end and it still entertains
Dabney Coleman was in War Games, computer tech guy, who deals with Dave Lightman, and Muppets Take Manhattan, Martin/Murray Price, a produced who tried to scam the Muppets, then got pursued by Animal.
As you mention it in the intro, I'm thinking "How could you not like this?" But then I remember you haven't loved some of my favourites. No worries. You have to express your opinions and be honest. I'll still like you even if you hate it. I may not respect you, but I won't hate you.
For more Dabney, watch the comedy "The Man with One Red Shoe" (1985). Also has Charles Durning (Julie's dad), Tom Hanks, Lori Singer, Carrie Fisher, and Jim Belushi, among others. And , yes, Dabney is pretty much the same type of character.

@@jdb101585 That could be, or at least it's part of it. It doesn't seem like he ever gave it much thought. But it speaks to what he said about realizing he didn't pay attention to women he didn't find attractive. Maybe he thought they weren't trying?
That's what I meant. His unconscious social conditioning is that women should try to be attractive to men, period. And if you try hard enough, you'll succeed. (Privileged guy worldview.) Ergo, women who aren't attractive, don't try hard enough.
So, of course, he was upset when he realized that all of those things are untrue. *shrug*
Best line in the film,
“Does Jeff know?”
😂😂😂
Yes
“That is one nutty hospital!”
Heh . . . that one was pretty great. Bill Murray's "You slut" was also hilarious.
the 'has been' doctor- Van Horn is the actor who played the Commandant in the Police Academy movies.
And equally well-known as the foster dad in Punky Brewster.
and was great in the many many sequels.
George Gaynes. But born George Jongejans in Helsinki, Finland.
@@JeffKelly03 Ironic that his name is "Dr. Brewster" in this.💙
@@DravenGalnot ironic. Coincidental.
Now that you've seen Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Lange in "Tootsie"
you've gotta see Games Garner and JulieAndrews in "Victor Victoria".
R.I.P To A Great Actor Dabney Coleman, You Will Be Missed 😢
I was 20 years old, just made movie theatre manager when Tootsie came out. It played for weeks and weeks with lines of people waiting for tickets.
FINALLY!!! Someone does a reaction to this movie.
I saw this movie in a movie theatre with my dad when it was new in 1982. I must have been 10 years old, but I still loved it, and it's still one of my favorite movies.
One of my ALL TIME FAVORITE COMEDIES!
So glad you're finally experiencing this classic. Everybody loved this one back in the theatres. 😊
I 💕 seeing you gush over young Jessica Lane. I was a teen in the 80' s & I was in awe of Jessica because she was involved with my teen crush Mikhail Baryshnikov . Jessica has major films in the 90' s but I have a soft spot for How to Beat the High cost of Living which was before Tootsie & which I think is a great time capsule of the time 😊
R.I.P To a Beautiful Gorgeous Woman ❤❤❤❤ Teri Garr You Will Be Missed😢
My favorite Dabney Colman is The Man With One Red Shoe. Very underappreciated movie.
Ohhhhhh, I’ve been waiting for thissssss!!! Yippeeeee!!!🤸♀️
I'm so so so happy that you finally watched this movie!
Interesting point! I think 'rooze' is also more of an East Coast pronunciation.
Actually, Eleanor might have pronounced it like Teddy did-he was her uncle, after all, so she might have grown up with the same pronunciation. It was her maiden name as well as her married one.
And of course, during the time that FDR was president, there were certain people who insisted that he must be Jewish and pronounced it "Rosenfeld".
Cab Callaway in his song FDR Jones pronounces it Rooze-uh-velt. That may have been the first time I heard it pronounced that way.
For Dabney Coleman's best role(s) - Cloak & Dagger, a dark 80's spy thriller for kids 😅 Dabney plays dual roles and crushes them both. RIP
You would also enjoy him in Dragnet, with Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd, and Beverly Hillbillies (an almost 9-5 reunion with Dolly & Lily Tomlin).
And Short Time.
He's a cop about to retire. A urine sample switch makes him think he's going to die shortly after retirement with no insurance.
But if he dies in the line of duty...
@@stephenolan5539 Haven't seen that one. I'll seek it out. 👍
Modern Problems
💯 Ashleigh will get an absolute kick out of Victor/Victoria!
(Edit: also, loved Grusin's music in The Firm!)
Robert Preston is great in Victor/Victoria (as he is in everything), but my favorite movie with him is Blake Edward's S.O.B.
“There’s nothing sadder than an old queen with a head cold.”
He also did the music for Three Days of the Condor. Great old spy thriller.
Your opinion isn't unpopular with me...
I LOVE Tootsie
Dabney also briefly appears as Tom Hanks' father in 1998's " You've Got Mail."
And he made a WOPR in another movie.
@@stephenolan5539 Yes, as McKittrick in " War Games."
He also appears in the *OUTER LIMITS* episodes *SPECIMEN: UNKNOWN S1E22* . I happened too just watch that episode last week.
@@calme-dx2dp He was also in "On Golden Pond"
The actress who plays Sandy is Terri Garr, who you've seen before in Young Frankenstein as Inga
She was also a dancer/extra in at least 6 Elvis films during the 60's
Oh and little big man 😂
"Kramer vs Kramer", "The Graduate"
Dabney was also in "War Games" with Matthew Broderick.
Dustin Hoffman's agent is played by director Sidney Pollack. He directed "Jeremiah Johnson", "Three Days of the Condor" and "The Yakuza."
He also played Will Truman's dad in 'Will & Grace".
He also had a cameo as the doctor who has a heart attack in "Death Becomes Her" which Ashleigh already reacted to.
And won an Oscar for directing Out of Africa
...and "The Way We Were"(1973)
YES!!! -- I have been waiting for this for so long!
My parents live right around the corner from the entrance to the soap-opera studio, and sometimes I walk down that street just to "re-enact" that last shot. 🤣
💐🙏🏻RIP Dabney Wharton Coleman (January 3, 1932 - May 16, 2024) (aged 92) you will truly be missed and my prayers go out to you and your family. 💐🙏🏻
My first thought: "Ashleigh's watching Tootsie--OH this is going to be good!"
I’m SO glad you loved this Ashleigh - I knew you would! Yay!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Mimes are real. My brother was a street performer in San Francisco, and we grew up with a famous mime, Don who did all of Mel Brooks mime bits, puppetry, and "shadow" choreography (Dracula dead and loving it). Mimes are used a lot in horror movies.
I read that Bogata mimed the streets.
And it worked traffic fatalities went down dramatically.
There's a hilarious mime named Tom at Sea World who has a bunch of tiktoks out.
RIP Mr Coleman. Such a prolific actor.
Hoffman in MARATHON MAN!! That's a good one!
I saw this movie the day after graduation at the Great Lakes Recruit Training Center. My folks came to the ceremony and took me out to the movie. I fell in love with Jessica Lange as I'm sure all 18 yo sailors did.
Yes. People are starting to react to this. Love the back and forth between Dustin and director Sydney Pollack, who plays his agent. Jessica Lange and Teri Garr are amazing in this, and of course Bill Murray:)
Everyone in this movie was so good! A few years before this, Jessica Lange starred in the 1976 version of King Kong (also with Jeff Bridges).
Big Fish
I'm an 80's baby, but only saw this movie a couple of years ago for a film class. I loved it so much, and found I missed Dorothy when it was over. 😂
Tootsie is a Classic movie with a great cast! Lots of stars in their prime! Jessic Lange was also in the 1977 King Kong with Jeff Bridges! Another Great movie you need to watch!! The guy playing the Dr. Was the commander in the "Police Academy" movies. (Lasard) Great reaction Ashleigh thanks for sharing ❤️💛
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I’m glad you finally got to see this very entertaining film
Tootsie .... the original Mrs Doubtfire :D
Saw it Christmas 82 with my dad....one of the few movies we saw together. We both liked it surprisingly.
"Double Swing", it's a double glider, they're a pain in the ass to swing normally, but as a kid me and my cousins had a ball playing on them.
YES!! Soap dish !!!!!!!!!🎉❤😂
Dabney Coleman was in War Games, computer tech guy, who deals with Dave Lightman, and Muppets Take Manhattan, Martin/Murray Price, a produced who tried to scam the Muppets, then got pursued by Animal.
"On Golden Pond" would be another great movie to watch in honot of Dabbey Coleman". Great performances with beautiful scenery. Must watch.
As you mention it in the intro, I'm thinking "How could you not like this?" But then I remember you haven't loved some of my favourites.
No worries. You have to express your opinions and be honest. I'll still like you even if you hate it. I may not respect you, but I won't hate you.
Dabney Coleman and baby Henry Thomas in CLOAK & DAGGER was something on repeat as a kiddo.
Oh, you're going to love this movie
One of my favorite movies!!! Everyone is perfect here. Don't forget Tery Garr (the unsure friend actress) ,she is always so good!!!
We knew you'd love this! In your face!
Micheal's agent is the director of Tootsie. "The Tongue" was the loopy captain in Police Academy movies. Also, if u want to see other Jessica Lange movies, watch Hush with Gwen Paltrow and Losing Isiah with Halle Berry.
I have been wanting this one for a long time. RIP Dabney.
