One of the biggest shocks in this film was seeing Tom Selleck without his moustache. It was his signature look, he'd had it for decades. He was a big TV star with a very "man's man" image, so this was a real breakout role for him. The really funny thing about him taking the moustache off is that moustaches like that had become a huge gay image thing in the 70's. Any other actor with that kind of image would have _added_ one to look gay, but he had to take it off. The gay stereotypes were already starting to wear thin by the 90's, as were many of the tropes in this film. That was the point - it was a parody of the ideas people had about gay men (limp wrists, liking Broadway and disco, being "artistic"), pointing to how outmoded it all was as acceptance was slowly starting to creep into American culture. We still weren't there yet, but Hollywood was loosening up some. So after a spate of films about AIDS and homophobia (like "Philadephia", "Boys Don't Cry" and "It's My Party"), we started getting a few films that went past that and were about "let's just drop the hate thing, it's getting old". Some people didn't like this film because of all the tropes, but poking fun at them was the whole point.
It wasn't until the credits that I realized Tom was playing Peter, though thinking back he did still have the voice. Dang, that moustache was a major look for him.

You haven’t seen Funny Girl? Oh Ashleigh, you rain on my parade! You know people, people who have seen Funny Girl, are the luckiest people- some would say in the world
I love the acting work Kevin Kline is putting into his hands. Just watch his hands and you'll see all the little flourishes that he does. It's wonderful.
While accepting the award for Best Actor for "Philadelphia," Tom Hanks gave an emotional speech in which he thanked (among others) his gay high school drama teacher. That speech was inspiration for the film. The very big difference being that Hanks called the teacher before including him in the speech, so while he was outing the teacher to some people, it was with the teacher's consent.
The short actor in the bad toupee playing Aldo Hooper is Ernie Sabella ("Yentl. It sucks. It's boring." and "I'm Howard's stylist, and I'm gay!"). He's the voice of Pumbaa in Lion King (1994).
I love Kevin Kline! FYI, he's been married to Pheobe Cates, who you saw in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", for like 35 years. He's been in lots of great stuff, but a couple of my favorites, are actually both Lawrence Kasdan flicks. Not sure how familiar you are with that name yet, but he is a writer/director that wrote a couple of the original Star Wars movies, and has had many successful films of his own. "Silverado" is an 80s western with Kevin Kline among a great ensemble cast, that he and his brother wrote as a nostalgic homage to the Hollywood Westerns that they grew up on as children, but had basically died out by then. A real Fun watch. The second is one of my two favorite romcoms that involve European travel, called "French Kiss" with Meg Ryan, who was the queen of romcoms at the time. Btw, the other one is "Only You" with Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei. Also, another good Tom Selleck flick is another western from the 90s called "Quigley Down Under", about an American cowboy that goes to Australia. Oh, and "A Star Is Born" was originally a movie from the 30s, and had been redone in the 50s, 70s, and the one you know with Lady Gaga and Bradly Cooper. The 70s one starred Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. And, did you say that you don't know Paul Newman?
14 minutes in, and here are3 people Ashleigh needs to learn more about; Tom Selleck (who could have been Indiana Jones), Bob Newhart (legendary comedian and tv star), and PAUL NEWMAN!!! He was one of Hollywood's all-time great actors and leading men! Must see movies; The Hustler, The Color of Money (with Tom Cruise), and Cool Hand Luke!!!
I could honestly see Ashleigh knowing about Paul Newman just for his spaghetti sauce or salad dressing. Almost expected her to say "Oh, the sauce guy?"
One of his last movies was the "Hudsucker Proxy", the critically savaged Coen Bros film. But I love that movie, and I'm sure Ashleigh would, too. Has she done any Coen Bros? I don't recall that she has.
Just putting this out there: A STAR IS BORN originally came out in 1937 and has been remade four times, one with Judy Garland and one with Barbra Streisand. EVERY version released has been a success.
A Star is Born has the unique distinction of having been made 4 times and generally being considered really good all 4 times. Each time they made it, it was redone for the current generation with changes that were important, but without losing the basic core of what made the story good. And all 4 were both well received at the time and have held up over the years.
I love that you watched this! They filmed in my hometown, in my high school, which was my towns 15-minutes of fame. That “intersexual, homosection, intersection” and “look at my hand!” Were heavily quoted through my high school days. 😂😂
Joan Cusak was nominated for an Oscar for this movie. Tom Selleck, star of "Magnum PI" in the 80's, movies like "Three Men & a Baby" and "Quigley Down Under" and currently the star of the show "Blue Bloods".
Kevin Kline is such an underrated actor, he's had so many great roles. If you haven't seen it already it's worth checking out the film "Dave", (which to me should be required viewing for every aspiring politician, wherever ther are from)
It's interesting that after his dead-serious film debut in Sophie's Choice, his career veered heavily towards comedy. He's certainly capable of doing both comedy and drama.
I love the humor in this movie, but I also love how Joan Cusack was able to go from hysterically funny to breaking my heart a little bit when she was confronting Howard. When she talked about being the girl nobody wanted... 💔 I understand that feeling, and it's awful. She did an amazing job in this role. Also, she has one of the funniest lines: "F*CK BARBRA STREISAND!" First of all... sacrilege. Second of all... 😆🤣😆🤣🤣
Not knowing paul Newman is unacceptable. ;-) You should add "The Sting" or "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid" to your paylist. You get two for the price of one, because in both movies his co-star is Robert Redford
1/ Paul Newman was a major film star during the 60's thought to the 80's who's films include The Sting, The Hustler and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. 2/ The Bridges of Madison County is a film starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep (Great Movie) 3/ Tom Selleck was in The original Magum PI, Friends and Blue Blood as well as films Runaway and Three men and a baby.
This movie is based on when Tom Hanks got the Oscar for Philidelpha, he outed his teacher in his acceptance speech. Tucking his pantleg in prevents it from getting caught in the bicycle chain. Kline did the same thing in Dave.
Wow! I NEVER see this comedy get any love from anyone, but it's been one of my favorites since it came out. Gigantic laughs, amazing cast, heart in the right place!
"A Star is Born" 2018 (Bradley Cooper & Lady Gaga), 1976 (Kris Kristofferson & Barbara Streisand), 1954 (James Mason & Judy Garland), 1937 (Fredric March & Janet Gaynor)
"A Star Is Born" has been made 4 times...the first time was with Janet Gaynor & Frederic March in 1937; second time was with Judy Garland & James Mason in 1954 (both won Golden Globes); the third time was with Barbra Streisand & Kris Kristofferson in 1976 which won an Oscar for the song "Evergreen" (writte by Barbra & Paul Williams) & swept the Golden Globes; & the last time with Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper. Tom Selleck was the original "Magnum P.I." in the '80s & now stars in "Blue Bloods." He did a film called "Quigley Down Under" with Alan Rickman & Laura San Giancomo. Really good western. Oh, & the "Three Men & a Baby" movies with Ted Danson & Steven Guttenberg...huge hit back then. As for Emily & Cameron, he was a high school senior & she was a student teacher which means they were only about 3 or 4 years apart.
EVERY TIME you said "diabeetus" I LMAO.. it made my 80's kid heart so happy! SO many celebs in this! OMG.. that reporter is Tom Selleck!!! He's currently on Blue Bloods?? The original Magnum PI?? Joan Cusack is seriously a delight in every role she plays whether it's this one, Addams Family Values, Working Girl, Grosse Point Black and Toy Story. She was nominated for a well deserved Oscar for this performance. You will absolutely love Kevin Kline in his other movies Soapdish and Dave. This movie was inspired by Tom Hanks' Oscar acceptance speech when he won for Philadelphia, it's a brilliant idea of a what if situation.
Pail Newman (my secret crush🥰) did a movie called "CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF," based on a Tennessee Williams play that co-starred Elizabeth Taylor. It was made in the 50's, so the studio had to be cautious with some themes, but it's very, heavily implied that Newman's character was dealing with issues of his sexuality and his romantic relationship with Taylor's character. It's an AMAZING movie and borh Taylor and Newman are outstanding (and sexy as hell) in that film!!🤩😍
Oh man, I'm crushed! Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke "I don't care if it rains or freezes as long as I've got Plastic Jesus sittin' on the dashboard of my car!" "What we have heah is failure to communicate". And that's just two of the many iconic lines in Cool Hand Luke.
"What are you talking about?" 'Climb a clock tower and take out the town' is a reference to the 'Texas Tower Sniper' who shot people from the clocktower of the University of Austin 1966 😬 The shooter is mentioned in Full Metal Jacket and the events in Natural Born Killers.
It was found out later that guy had a major tumor in his brain, hence had been acting irrationally for a while before that. There was a great doc called Tower (mostly animated) on PBS from 2016 about this incident.
@@wesleybush8646I found that out too, it’s quite sad, this was a good person his whole life, and because his body betrayed him, he became the embodiment of evil for a generation.

Oh, and in doublechecking that detail, I found that he saw multiple psychiatrists before hand for help, including one at UT and specifically mentioned having violent impulses and wanting to climb the tower and start shooting people. So many missed opportunities to prevent that one.
The ending was mostly a Spartacus reference (1960 starring Kirk Douglas & directed by Stanley Kubrick when he was still doing more mainstream studio films) - a movie you should add to the list at some point. Not to be confused with the series that was from the past decade.
Remember the Blade comments when we were surprised you didn't know Kris Kristofferson? He and Barbara Streisand starred in the 3rd version of A Star is Born. Maybe a good movie for the channel one day.

My favorite Kevin Kline performance is "Fierce Creatures." A very underrated spiritual sequel to "A Fish Called Wanda," where Kline is so hilarious at playing an utter sleazeball.
I know times have changed, but I remember when this came out, Wiford Brimley just melted my heart. He was trying his best to be loving and supportive in the best way he knew how. 🤗

@scottboswell6406 I 100% can see that casting. Or Madonna and Sean Penn would be brilliant casting too.
But what about a 90's black version; Whitney Houston and Jamie Foxx.
Millennials, what are you gonna do.
If memory serves, in the commentary Kevin or Tom say they took 30-40 takes to get the kiss done. Toward the last, one of them said, "If we can't get it this time, I'm going for tongue." LOL
Joan Cusack was nominated for an Oscar for this and, in my opinion, should have won!
She lost to Kim Basinger for "L.A. Confidential".
@@Madbandit77 As good as Kim was...I'm still going with Joan.
@@Madbandit77 A really great movie too.
Joan Cusack for me kills it everytime. I loved her in "Grosse Point Blank"
Again. One word. Soapdish. (1991)
OMG yessss!
Hilarious movie.
Oh wow I haven’t seen that in years!
YES!
I adore that movie. I think everyone here would get a jkick out of Ashleigh checking it out!
You haven’t seen Funny Girl? Oh Ashleigh, you rain on my parade! You know people, people who have seen Funny Girl, are the luckiest people- some would say in the world
I second this. Funny Girl is a masterpiece of a musical and should be on this channel!
Good one. Thay are the luckiest
I love the acting work Kevin Kline is putting into his hands. Just watch his hands and you'll see all the little flourishes that he does. It's wonderful.
I love Joan Cusack's delivery in this. So funny.
Wow he's married to Phoebe Cates?! I guess I could have googled 🤣 love French kiss such a feel good funny movie
Great movies, but let's not leave out Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting. Both with Paul Newman and Robert Redford.
I was going to mention Redford and Newman. She must learn more about Bob Newhart. Also if we're on Newman why not Mel Brooks Silent Movie?
One of his last movies was the "Hudsucker Proxy", the critically savaged Coen Bros film. But I love that movie, and I'm sure Ashleigh would, too. Has she done any Coen Bros? I don't recall that she has.
@chrismiller7743
Raising Arizona, a long time ago

Really need to watch Soapdish w Kevin Kline and Sally Field (among MANY others). So slept on and so camp!!!
"OH! THAT'S DEBBIE REYNOLDS!!!! .... right?" killed me. 🤣
@9:32 you tuck your pants into one sock to keep your hem from getting caught in your bike chain, and the chain's only on one side of the bike 😊
The chain grease was a bear to wash out.
Correction: it’s to avoid getting caught in the gears/spokes and getting grease on your pants
Just putting this out there:
A STAR IS BORN originally came out in 1937 and has been remade four times,
one with Judy Garland and one with Barbra Streisand.
EVERY version released has been a success.
Debbie Reynolds was hilarious in the movie Mother with Albert Brooks.
Omg I love that movie!
Yes! ''Oh, honey, lettuce doesn't get old''
@@jadzia911 🤣🤣🤣 Don't forget that block of freezer cheese! 🤣
You should see him and Meg Ryan in French Kiss!!
Definitely! Love that movie
Yes, Dave and French kiss
I love the humor in this movie, but I also love how Joan Cusack was able to go from hysterically funny to breaking my heart a little bit when she was confronting Howard. When she talked about being the girl nobody wanted... 💔 I understand that feeling, and it's awful. She did an amazing job in this role.
Also, she has one of the funniest lines: "F*CK BARBRA STREISAND!"
First of all... sacrilege. Second of all... 😆🤣😆🤣🤣
I paused on Cameron’s yearbook picture, and his quote is: “Life’s a game, and it doesn’t matter you win or lose, it’s how good you look.” Iconic
Sounds incredibly superficial.
Should definitely watch Quigley Down Under with Tom Selleck!
It so weird seeing Tom Selleck without his mustache. 😂
Not knowing paul Newman is unacceptable. ;-) You should add "The Sting" or "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid" to your paylist. You get two for the price of one, because in both movies his co-star is Robert Redford
Another Kevin Kline movie to watch is the 1985 western, Silverado.
Omg yes. One of his best! And one to avoid is the Big Chill.
4:32 YESSSSS YESSSSSSSSS I'm glad you remember 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤ she's in talks of maybe making a number 3!!
Bob Newhart is a classic comedian and comedic actor.
Arnie doesn't dance, he can barely walk!🤣🤣🤣
1/ Paul Newman was a major film star during the 60's thought to the 80's who's films include The Sting, The Hustler and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
2/ The Bridges of Madison County is a film starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep (Great Movie)
3/ Tom Selleck was in The original Magum PI, Friends and Blue Blood as well as films Runaway and Three men and a baby.
I was thinking she'd watched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid too
Tom Selleck without a mustache? "Look what they did to my boy"
This movie is based on when Tom Hanks got the Oscar for Philidelpha, he outed his teacher in his acceptance speech.
Tucking his pantleg in prevents it from getting caught in the bicycle chain. Kline did the same thing in Dave.
Matt Dillon's character also spoofs '90s-era Brad Pitt.
In that situation, he talked to his teacher and got permission first. However, yes, that inspired this movie.
Wilford Brimley you obviously know from his "diabeetus" memes, but among other great characters, don't forget he played Blair in "The Thing."
Wow! I NEVER see this comedy get any love from anyone, but it's been one of my favorites since it came out. Gigantic laughs, amazing cast, heart in the right place!
Another lovely Kevin Kline movie is French Kiss. One of my favorites.
Yes!!!! An all time favorite. And Soap Dish!
@@toxicginger9936 love that one too. BTW-I moved to France in 2017 and have been to the area where the vineyard is!
"A Star is Born" 2018 (Bradley Cooper & Lady Gaga), 1976 (Kris Kristofferson & Barbara Streisand), 1954 (James Mason & Judy Garland), 1937 (Fredric March & Janet Gaynor)
Doctor, this patient needs a healthy dose of Paul Newman, stat!
Monica's boyfriend on Friends?? He does look different without a mustache. OOOOOHHHH... she DID not just say eff Babs!!!!!!!!!! Queen Babs!!
Did you just ask, What's funny girl? This is A MUST WATCH MOVIE. Pleaseeeeee
I think Funny Lady (the sequel) was the film mentioned, but Funny Girl is definitely the better film for Ashleigh to check out.
“He just came out at his big church wedding! Martha Stewart is furious!” 😂😂😂
"The Bridges of Madison County" would be a great one for a "Out of character movie star" category!
"What are you talking about?"
'Climb a clock tower and take out the town' is a reference to the 'Texas Tower Sniper' who shot people from the clocktower of the University of Austin 1966 😬
The shooter is mentioned in Full Metal Jacket and the events in Natural Born Killers.
@@RLucas3000 He literally wrote a suicide letter before going on the rampage saying he doesn't know why he feels compelled to do this, and asking for an autopsy to be done to better understand . He also asked for his estate to be donated to a mental health foundation. It is utterly horrifying, as if he were a perfectly rational prisoner in his own mind, watching as he does horrible things he would never do.
Seeing Tom Selleck without his signature moustache is like seeing an owl without feathers - weird AF!
It's probably why I never remember he's in this movie. It just ain't natural.
@@jaynahoffacker2557 LOL yeah it's like he's some other vaguely familiar actor.
Tom Sellick, Paul Newman, Bob Newhart, Little Oral Annie…
I’m so old.
Remember the Blade comments when we were surprised you didn't know Kris Kristofferson? He and Barbara Streisand starred in the 3rd version of A Star is Born. Maybe a good movie for the channel one day.
I love when you burst out laughing Ashleigh. The way your uvula starts vibrating and dancing is adorable!!!
Always loved this movie, and how it plays with stereotypes ("I mean, clean? Smart? Nice? Totally gay!")!
I never thought I would see anyone give this movie the respect it deserves. Kevin Kline is absolutely phenomenal. So happy you did this!
"I am Spartacus."
Three years is not that long, but your former student being nominated for an Oscar is a weird thing to wait for (probably just a joke).
The way Kevin Kline casts the remote away after turning the TV off is a perfect moment of physical comedy! He's so funny and the faces he makes 🤣🤣🤣
Kevin Kline is such a talent! The scene of the tape deck berating him as he dances with pure joy is a delight also.
Just paused at 14.50 as mind blown. The priest he is confessing to is the same from Sister Act! After the nuns first perform and Maggie Smith is losing it, he comes in praising them and talking about the teenagers coming in off the street. Can't believe I've never caught that before. Love this film
My late wife and I saw a pre-screening of this before it came out... we thought it was soooo funny!
My favorite Kevin Kline performance is "Fierce Creatures." A very underrated spiritual sequel to "A Fish Called Wanda," where Kline is so hilarious at playing an utter sleazeball.
Wilford Brimley is also in The Thing he plays Blair
I know times have changed, but I remember when this came out, Wiford Brimley just melted my heart. He was trying his best to be loving and supportive in the best way he knew how. 🤗
Everytime I watch something with Kevin Kline now, all I hear is Mr. Fischoeder from Bob's Burgers.
Also, Tom Selleck without his mustache just feels...wrong. lol it took me a bit to realize it was him.
Selleck sans 'stache is jarring, but not for nothing this might be the best acting he's ever done! Being able to see his face was a revelation.
One of my wife and my's favorite movies. We quote it often.
Another good Tom Selleck movie that I think you would really appreciate is one called Shadow riders it is an absolute fun film, and it has both Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott also known as the mustache twins

That line delivery at 24:34 should been Oscar winner.
Well, we know Kevin Kline was only pretending to be gay here since he's been married to Phoebe Cates (the one who memorably lost her top in Fast Times At Ridgemont High) since 1989.
She didn't *"lose"* her top. She very deliberately and very slowly took it off! I know...I rewound that scene about a million times!
It's about time someone watched this. And I can't think of anyone better suited for the task than Ashleigh
14:16 funny girl is a movie. 14:30 a star is born is a remake
Bridges of Madison County is a older-person romance movie--that was very popular with the 55+ group. It has Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood.
Ever since Adams Family Values. I've had the biggest crush on Joan Cusak.
This movie gave me a new appreciation for the song “Macho Man.” It’s one of my favorites now. Especially that “I said, dig my big thick mustache!” line 😂
