    Desert Hearts is an icon movie. It’s the first movie that portrayed lesbians in a positive human way. Before this movie they were almost alway shown as mentally unstable and predatory. It was also one of the first movies where there was no violence against the women. Although it wasn’t a big budget it had a bigger budget than most movies at the time. It is considered one of the best lesbian movies of its time and opened the door for more mainstream movies with storylines that weren’t negative.

    • @malingor7042
      @malingor7042 6 месяцев назад +1

      Desert Hearts did NOT have a big budget. It cost 800 thousand dollars. ALL IN. The director, Donna Deitch, remortgaged her house, and a bunch of lesbians donated too. I saw it when it came out ( I was 18) and I cannot emphasise ENOUGH the impact it had. It was ground breaking but that's largely because it was directed by a lesbian ( other films, however well-meaning had been directed by men) and she stood up to the censorship they tried to impose, and it was based on a book by a lesbian, who gave her permission to make it how she wanted. This s why ppl making their ''own'' films is important, whether thats LGBT or POC or whoever. Another great ( but sad) movie is The Childrens Hour, based on a book by Lillian Hellman who's had her own struggles ( woman, Jewish, possibly bi) and the film was as forward-thinking as it was allowed to be in 1961..

    Some commenters have mentioned Rock Hudson. He was a celebrity with a manly persona (admittedly his prime time was behind him) who publicly announced that he was gay and did the things that gay men do, and had contracted AIDS as a result. This was in contrast to the earlier campy innuendo about being gay by people such as Paul Lynde, Charles Nelson Reilly, and Liberace, and led to healthier coming-out actions by people such as Elton John and Ellen DeGeneres. My grandma loved Liberace and would have recoiled at the suggestion that he was gay.

    The poster at the beginning was Melissa Ethridge. Huge deal in the 90s that she was gay. The 90s was a wild time between anti-gay accusations (groomers/pedos) and acceptance. We saw more people being gay in public- then Will and Grace *really* helped "mainstream" it. There was still super heavy bi-erasure though, heh.
    Bris is what a circumcision is called in Judaism. A bris is performed by a Mohel- usually a rabbi but not always. Traditionally the Mohel does the cutting and then uses oral suction to remove blood, it's called Metzitzah b'peh (likely the source of the rumors that Jews eat babies or drink baby blood). Some babies have contracted herpes via this method in NYC due to certain Mohels, some have died. The entire thing is called a Brit Milah or Bris but many reform Jewish families will go with a Brit Shalom, which does not include circumcision at all.

And no sweaty palm-holding, neither... can't sign along and hold hands!

    It's a fun movie but I really wish they hadn't portrayed all the gay guys as being so flamboyantly effeminate. Yes, it's a great stereotype for comic relief and makes it easy to write but not all gay guys act like they're Bette Davis. It's like having a character from Italy and having them say "Mama Mia" at the start of every sentence. It's lazy writing.

    To begin with, Natasha Lyonne first big role was in American Pie.
    The blonde friend 9by locker and intervention) is Michelle Williams from Dawson's Creek fame and former wife of Heath Ledger. (Brokeback Mountain, The Dark Knight)
    The blonde woman in the red poster is Melissa Ethridge is a songwriter, guitarist, and singer in heartland and country rock genres. She is also a well-known lesbian.
    That is a New Zealand accent because that is Melanie Lynskey famous for being in "Two and a Half Men) as Rose, in "The Last of Us" which you have seen, "Ever After: A Cinderella Story" as one of the stepsisters, "Up in the Air", "I don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore", and "Heavenly Creature". She is also currently married to Jason Ritter, John Ritter's son (Three's Company).
    Cathy Moriarty (Mary Brown) is known for being in such films as "Raging Bull", "Kindergarten Cop", "Analyze That", "Matinee", and "Cop Land". Eddie Cibrian (Rock Brown) is known for being in "The Young and the Restless", "CSI: Maimi", "Baywatch Nights", and "Sunset Beach" and movies like "Living Out Loud", "The Best men Holiday", "Tyler Perry's Good Deeds", and "The Street lawyer". He is currently married to LeAnn Rimes.
    Clea DuVall even though being in this one and "Girl, Interrupted" in 1999 at the age of about 22, did not come out as Lesbian until after "Intervention" in 2016 at the age of 38.
    Congratulations for recognizing Dante Basco (Dolph) as 'Rufio' from "Hook".
