I had a rattle for months and it was driving not only me but my neighbors crazy. It was unbelievably loud when I started the car in the morning. This fix works. I drilled a small hole through the collar of the heat shield. Do to the rattle, there was a small gap between the collar and the exhaust, so I was able to drill through the collar and not hit the exhaust. Just hold the heat shield collar with your hand and push it away from the exhaust where you are going to drill. I used a self- drilling screw, but before I used it, I ground down the tip of the screw so that there was no chance of the screw ever piercing the exhaust if it started to rattle again. I screwed it in until tight against the exhaust. It acts like a set screw. Rattle gone.
This was so helpful to watch. Even though I'm not going to do this myself, it was so validating to learn that this problem and noise drives other people crazy too!!
Very clear instructional for as you said, "a very easy, simple, quick, cheap way to fix it (the rattle); I agree, by no means a permanent fix, but that is what's needed from time to time. Clearly the screw is not being drilled into the exhaust pipe. I'll be trying a mixed method, your application with the use of a bolt, as Craig commented, earlier in the post, but with a different approach. I'll use a 3/4" or 1" bolt, pre-drill a hole in the heat shield to fit a bolt, JB Heat Weld a nut onto the heat shield over that hole, then with a lock washer, a bit of the JB Heat Weld on it as well, then screw the bolt in as you displayed until there is good tension. The issue arose for me about 18 months ago and I have had a steel shim wedged in, which is actually still there doing what I wanted it to do. Thanks for the post.
Pre drilled hole in my heat shield put a lock washer on the bolt, Tapered the end of the bolt a little so threads are clean and will start, screwed the bolt down through heat shield till the flat of the bolt pushed heat shield away from my exhaust and squished down the lock washer ( a little grinding for fine adjustments may be needed) Annoying heat shield rattle solved!! No need to pay dealer 300 dollars for new heat shields!!
2010 Forester, shield near the oil pan on the passenger side. Has enough of a lip around it so I bent both sides slightly down to increase tension around the exhaust pipe. The shield metal is pliable and it didn't break anything. If/when it loosens up again I'll add some gasket material around it and repeat the process. Thankfully the rattling is only at low RPM lol.
Use a hose clamp. My mechanic charged me $25 to fix the same issue. Few weeks later the noise came back. I got under the car and he put screws in the heat shield just like this. I bought a set of 3 different size hose clamps at Walmart for $5 and held up 3 years now…
Do not do this! Go to the hardware store and ask for a “hose clamp” - you’ll need more than one, just enough to wrap all the way around and do that. Don’t put a hole in something. It’s a $5.00 fix.
@@Robynhoodlum Probably not.... not a steel one no way. Plastic ones could certainly melt and then weaken. Although all this being said, not sure how a hose clamp could fix this. Not like you can really tighten the mouth of the heat shield
Hose Clamp! Hose Clamp! Hose Clamp!!!! If you use a Self Tapping Screw, you are likely going to drill though into the Exhaust Pipe, Header etc. You'll cause more issues like an Exhaust Leak or something worse!
I've got a different heat shield that's rattling... There's honestly so many under there lol, had to fix one under the trunk and now one under the right wheel area lol .. they are super annoying
Depends on the material. If aluminum and stainless interacting it would be the aluminum as its more galvanically negative. You can find galvanic series tables online to show you the potential of each metal. Whichever is more negative will be giving up electrons to the other and therefore corroding.
because the rattle appears after the inner lining turns to dust and leaves a gap between the header and shield. Using cotton wool in there apparently helps aswell

“Especially at 2500 rpm’s” exactly my problem!
I’m hearing some sort of metal scraping at 2500 rpm so I really hope it’s just the heat shield!!

Won’t a hose clamp break from the heat stress?

Eventually that pointed screw will make its way through the exhaust pipe and then you will need to spend some big bucks to replace the exhaust
Spot weld, fixed.
Thanks I’ll do this tomorrow, my right side is loose, I’m not sure how much it rattles but I’m curious what it will sound like when it’s not loose
Pack it with some steel wool between the exhaust and the heat shield. Problem solved.
thats why so many lose screws on the roads causing flat tires
Dude your my hero
Thanks for your video, just curious is that where the front center lifting point for the floor jack?
If you ever wondered why you pick up a screw in your tire.

What kind of galvanic action can take place with the screw touching the header? Which metal would be sacrificed to rust, the header or the screw?

Good idea. Mcguyver
subaru patiented rattle lol
it is spelled "Patented" as in patent
smart guy
Are you drilling into the exhaust pipe? Wouldn’t that make an exhaust leak or and I wrong?
Do you know what a heat Sheild is?
he said he just tightened it just touching against the inner exh pipe, not into it or thru it, so no hole.
Genius..,!
Why not use a regular bolt where it is missing

@@devonsfozzie so you mean its two layers of sheet metal on one side and two on the other? It straight up looks like it went into the exhaust pipe?
Terrible, that shield will give slightly over time, the screw will loosen, and then it will just rattle itself out into a tire. Garbage
@@AndrewWestrick better off just taking the rattling ones off tbh
