How To Fix A Rattling Heat Shield

  • Here is a short video showing you one way to fix a rattling heat shield. Remember jack your car up safely and secure it on stands. Also if you are not sure what you are drilling into...DON'T DRILL! Seek professional help. Sure would be a shame to ruin a wiring harness, or drill through your gas tank. Any how, hope this gives you an idea to use. Thanks for watching!

    Did this last night on my daughter's 2009 Corolla. Used the drill and screws method and it is great now. I do wish I had a lift because I only had ramps and it was a bit cramped working under there but it's all good now! Thanks for the video!

    Larger aluminum washers under the rivet head will provide a bit of stress relief allowing the repair to last longer. Obviously, the additional time/effort for the washers makes sense to those of us doing this ourselves and planning to keep the vehicle until delivered to the scrap yard.

      Good point. The heads on rivets is pretty small and the heatshield itself is pretty thin metal.

      I am giving this a go on my own. ( going to roll/crawl under) my factory low to the ground, pain in the rear, Chrysler sebring 00 model. Mine came loose, lost half on the interstate. Thought my car was finally biting the dust. I know where it's at, my question is, if I don't see rivets, can I just use something to tie around it. The existing clamp is still there. I just couldn't seem to slip it back under. If I could it would probably come loose quickly anyways.

    I thought it was my muffler the entire time! We were on the road last night and the car must have hit something on the road and then the rattling noise would not stop. When my husband told me this morning he looked underneath the car and said that was a piece of tin that was leaning to one side, I knew it was the heat shield. Thanks for clarifying it for me! Only the Toyotas I’ve owned have had this issue and it wasn’t with the old ones (like 1980s). Toyota started making the THINNEST shields, like Pepsi-can thin. Toyota needs to thicken that section (at each bolt hole) or use a very large washer under bolt head. That’s what I did after the heat shield fell off the bolt (bolt remained). If you hear metal rattling at a stop light idle and put car in neutral and it goes away, then this is most likely the culprit. In your driveway or other safe area, with car running, looking under car, you’ll see exactly where the sound comes from.

    I've had this problem on my 2001 Astra. They tend to break around the original nuts so what I did was to undo the nuts and put a big washer between the nut and heat shield to hold it in place. I had a couple of them shear off but I still had enough to be able to hold the heat shields in place.

      @Daedalus_UK 6 лет назад

    I prefer to use plastic washers for the heat shields. Stops the galvanic corrosion from getting any worse. And may sound cheap but I typically just use old bottle caps, center drill 1/4" hole. If original nut can be removed, have the inside surface of the cap facing outwards. If too rusted to remove nut, but with enough thread protruding from the stud, flip the cap over and then 2x nut it. Repaired countless vehicles with way over the years. Never had a comeback.

    If there's no structural member to secure a rivet, instead of drilling through the floor, I'd suggest using JB weld or similiar epoxy, and "glue" a small piece of flat aluminum stock to drill the hole into instead of the floor. Add cross spacers to the flat aluminum piece so you're not "gluing" the piece directly to the floor. You need a gap between the floor and that glued piece for the rivet to mushroom and not drill into the floor.

Once i slowed down, the sound was terrible as it fell right on my drive shaft (AWD). Both fittings got broken. Drilled new hole on one side and used the same whole on the other side (just the rivet went brokeon one side). Used bigger diameter bolts for metal with big threads. Now it is sitting tight and nice but maan it was loud.... People were turning heads when I was passing by them on 401 Hwy LOL

    Thanks for showing that most people just rip them off not realizing what they're doing ...👍

    Can l do this on my 2012 Rogue? I’m not sure if there are any areas to drill a hole, for my pop rivets. Is there another way, if this fails? Thanks, it’s loud, and the neighbors started looking today!🙄

    I poked holes in mine and tied hose clamps around the muffler. My guess is washers would have been better but one was stripped and I couldnt get it off

      TheAodha lol unless your racing or under constant full throttle it’ll never get hot enough to burn anything it’s a very thin sheet separated into panels If you think that would protect you from a fire than idk what to tell you. many cars don’t have it from it simply rusting off and it’ll go unnoticed the rest of that cars life

    Had this done at a local Midas. Cost $60 CDN to have it done. Was it worth the cost. Note I am a senior and have a hard time getting under my car.

    What about heat shields for the power steering rack?

    Just had this issue with my Nissan Titan. Took it in for service for a rattle and slight vibration at high speed. Thought maybe it was transmission related. Turned out to be a $1.50 clamp on the heat shield. Nissan was happy to replace it for the low, low price of the $139 diagnostic fee + $1.50 for the clamp. I'm pretty sure diagnosis and repair took them about 15 minutes. Not a bad way to make a buck. But I don't have a lift... so I guess I'll consider this a "convenience charge." 🙄
