  • Three meters in diameter, two tons of weight - the Ocean Sunfish or Mola is the biggest and one of the most weird bony fish in our oceans. Underwater filmmaker Thomas Behrend manages to search out this giant in the Pacific as well as in the Mediterranean Sea. He captures unique scenes of a creature that normally lives in the unreachable deep sea.
In Florida Thomas also meets a real giant. Massive but gentle Manatees put a spell on Thomas. But then the filmmaker witnesses how an undercooled Manatee gets into danger. A race against time begins…

I live in florida near manatees. I see them all the time. The Crystal river is not too far from where i live. But you can see them in many different places. I actually live in Manatee County, Florida. We had the oldest living manatee in captivity who was 59yrs old. One evening, someone at the aquarium forgot to shut a gate that leads to some equipment. The next day the found the manatee dead in the equipment area. The manatee went in there but couldn’t get back out and couldn’t get air so it drowned. That was about last year. It was a huge story and all the Florida people were so sad. Poor hootie. RIP Hootie. It really was a sad affair. I feel bad for the person that accidentally left the gate open. So much for seeing how long they can live. Start over I guess.
Since Manatee are endangered you are not allowed to touch them. So if you are wondering why Thomas puts his arms out to the side when the calf climbs up him.

The lady with the little braids, I love her little Mola hair ties. She is the one who is tagging the Molas. What a wonderful presentation about both the Mola and the Manatee.

They saw a manatee in the film with evidence of a shark bite on him/her. What would cause the shark to not continue in his/her attack so that the shark can eat something? It doesn't seem that a manatee can easily fight off a shark to cause the attack to stop. Manatees also don't seem fast enough to out swim a shark to safety. Could it have something to do with most sharks preferring saltwater and this Florida manatee was in freshwater when the researches noticed the shark bite on her belly? If not, could it be that the manatee stirred up the silty bottom to create an inability to see which direction the manatee swam off in? Do some sharks bite and then suddenly decide they don't need any food? Why would that manatee still be alive is what I'm asking.

I think it was an injury from a boat, not a shark

    • @ylenagreen4084

Sharks often take an initial bite to check that is is food that they are biting. This is really the reason that most mynas survive shark attacks as it is often a reasonably light bite and then the shark realises that this is not a seal but a human and swims off. I would assume this is what may have happened with the sharks

" Maybe if we're lucky, we can see a shark attack and eat a Mola Mola"? Would that be just as much fun as watching a Grizzly tearing a Hamster apart...what an unusually cruel thing to say.? The outcome of the shark and the docile Mola Mola is predetermined and not a particularly appropriate thing to wish for. They are not there just for your delight in your odd predilection for violence, madame...
