I guess Malaysians personally do not really need tourists to make a living. We do not look at tourists as some kind of opportunity. But as a country, tourists' money is always good for the economy. So, tourists are welcomed, but at the same time, we like to keep our country as it is.
As a Malaysian, I completely agree with Ben’s observation about condos in tropical climates. The hot and humid weather means pests like cockroaches, house geckos, small spiders, and ants can show up, even in high-rise buildings. While this isn’t the case everywhere, it’s always good to inspect the property before renting. Pest control is the owner's responsibility, so be sure to clarify this beforehand. I grew up in a small rural kampung (village), so I’m quite used to dealing with these things. At my parents' house, you might still spot snakes or even wild boars wandering through the backyard. When it comes to fruits, Malaysians are definitely spoiled! Our mangoes are much more flavorful, and while our bananas are smaller, they’re much tastier. Mangosteens and rambutans are also fantastic-and if you’re feeling adventurous, give durians a try! That said, be cautious about how sweet our food and drinks can be. Malaysians love their sugar, so if you’re dining out, it’s a good idea to ask for less sugar in your beverages. Alcohol can be expensive here, so if you don’t drink, you’ll save quite a bit. Malaysians may seem a bit shy at first, but we’re incredibly friendly and always willing to help. Don’t hesitate to ask if you need anything! Also, make friends with the locals-you’ll likely be invited to join a celebration during one of our many festive seasons. It’s a wonderful way to experience Malaysian culture and hospitality firsthand.
Malaysia is a great country with great food. The problem is that the income requirements are very high for Malaysia while being somewhat lower for Sabah and Sarawak.

KP would be ideal if it weren't for the very uncomfortable high heat and humidity and especially for older folks. Maybe Ben could discuss this. Thrn there is the complicated and risky immigration system.
I’m low carb and mainly carnivore due to health issues so $ 600 was what I budgeted since beef there are imported from Australia. Glad he confirmed my food budget. Not sure if pork is readily available since Muslim country. I eat mainly ribeyes, ribs, shrimp, salmon, cheeses, macadamia, pecans, etc. so my food budget is ~$300 per month in SE FL but I know where to shop here for quality and great prices. I don’t eat out much since hard to figure out they put in the entrees.
@@jackbaldwin3649 You want to live cheap cheap and not enjoy life maybe. You pay $600/month and try to live on $400 it’s not gonna work. Consider the fact Malaysia immigration won’t even give you a long term visa and doing border runs they will catch you. I live on my retirement and investments so I live very nice on $5,000 per month and I own my own condo on the 38th floor. That’s the way to do it and enjoy the country not beg packers amount. The main thing is getting approved by Malaysian immigration. Get an agent to help.
28:25 Nasi lemak RM5 - RM10 not in dollars. But basic nasi lemak can be just RM4 or less. (1USD or less) if in KL (Kuala Lumpur) maybe Ben made a mistake he's thinking RM( Ringgit) but said dollars instead lol
Ben is so articulate. But the very hot and humid climate....!!! Who wants to be confined to air conditioning 24/7?? Retirement visa.....the whole arrangement requires a fixed investment plus financial requirements. The Malaysian bureaucracy could make life difficult just by making changes intolerable and forcing people to leave!
The Malls are huge and has AC it doesn't feel confined at all . Also its not that hot in the morning between 6 am - 11 am its cooler than Florida after 12 noon however its just like in Florida summer time except it rains for an 1 hour every other day and at night its just balmy weather. Also Malaysia has highland areas that's around 60-70s all year long.
@keangwooichoo6138 Yes, but I figured as a single young guy there might be more similarities between KL and Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, and maybe some advantages in terms of immigration in Cambodia.
@dovygoodguy1296 I never saw similarities when watching vlogs(of cambodia, Laos, vietnam, etc etc) Only singapore is similar to kl. Others have crazy tuk tuk and bikes. And wires hanging dangerously above your head. Sometimes physical development is faster than mental development in some countries. Thailand has more tourists than malaysia but wires still hang above your heads. Pollution is bad in some countries too. Scammers , I heard quite a lot in vietnam. So no place is perfect.
Don't ask, don't tell. There are underground clubs. People generally don't care but no rubbing it in anyones faces like in the West. That's the big no no.

How would Ben compare KL with moving to Cambodia?
Just check safety index first. Then check health care.
