Interesting listing! To be honest, I've ignored pretty much all Disney-wars since The Rise of Skywalker, so it's almost tempting to check out the short films published on Disney+. Biome, in particular, seems inventive, recalling the days when Lucas directed short, imagistic short films.
Agreed on The Last Jedi. The more time passes, the more I appreciate the film's spirit of rebellion and urge to break the toys. I wonder how many of its truly crippling flaws can be separated from having to exist with Abrams's shlock.
Also, on the point of high art and your, I guess, re-evaluation of Star Wars. What do you mean that the concept doesn't exist? Either way, I liked this little throwback to Star Wars.

    • @styleissubstance
      @styleissubstance  Год назад +2

I'd say that people can't meaningfully measure and distinguish high and low art to the point I don't buy into that dichotomy and think it's just arbitrary pretentiousness. The best binary framework would be non-commercial and commercial, but even that has so much grey area seeing how producers and distributors of film and music still want profit and how high of a price tag paintings go for. At any rate, Star Wars can't meaningfully be considered high art as some prequel apologists want to make it out to be, but they'd be better off resisting that framework altogether.

I would say A New Hope is the best, due to its accomplishment in getting the audience invested in an entire new world in a single film. But I really appreciate you putting Revenge of the Sith at #1, which is my #2.
My favorite part of Revenge of the Sith is the final fight scene between Anakin and Obi Wan. You get that scene where both characters use the same force push move at each other at the same time, emphasizing the tragedy that Obi Wan taught Anakin everything he knew. And the final part that allows Obi Wan to win is Anakin's hubris when he attempts to take "the high ground."
I even like how Obi Wan's failure to finish the job and make sure Anakin dies shows the weakness of the Jedi. Had Obi Wan been more ruthless instead of merciful, he could have prevented Anakin's ultimate transformation into Darth Vader.
It reminds me of the Tale of the Heike - the Japanese epic written in the 14th century about the war between Taira and Minamoto clans. At the beginning of the Tale of Heike, the Taira clan defeats the Minamoto clan. But rather than killing the entire Minamoto family line to ensure there would never be another rebellion against them, they allow the then 13 year old Minamoto Yoritomo to live and be banished instead of being executed. Years later, Minamoto Yoritomo would grow up to be a villain and destroys the entire Taria clan. In other words, it was *the mercy* of the Taira clan that led to their doom.
Given that Star Wars has so many Samurai themes (like the Hidden Fortress), I like to think that Obi Wan's death in the hands of Darth Vader follows the same theme of the Tale of Heikei - that mercy is self-destructive.

I too consider "high art" as a concept which was created by culture. Generally we give artistic creations rank and titles based on our cultural values in a very simmilar manner we give those to people in a hierarchy. In the end I think debating art and morals is part of a cultural powerstruggle, or rather it is very major factor in our motivations, even if we are not entirely conscious about it.
When people refer to "high art" they usually think on art which has qualities which are regarded highly in western philosophy and christianity. Like abstract>concrete, ideas>action, also even things like low budget>high budget. In the end it is kinda inevitable to judge and rank art based on our values, but I dont think there is an absolute or objective way to do that. Sure they are better and worse methods, but I don't belive that there is a singular truth, which dictates how we should do this, like we like to belive in our monotheistic culture.
Also I became increasingly sceptical about our current judgements on art. As much as I like director like Bergman, Tarkovsky, or Godard, It is kinda unhealthy that we regard their more abstract existential films as inherently superior even to a blockbuster. You can pretty much identify signs of - what Nietzsche called - the ascetic ideal. It is obvious that certain films are made with more skill and greater craft, and why the play it safe, often shallow blockbusters are regarded as a lowly form of art, however I also find it worrying that many of those more "artistic" and better crafted films mostly seam to seak some great artistic Truth with a capital T.

There are no prequels fans who dislike the Original Trilogy. Except for me, that's my unique role in the Star Wars fandom, but me alone, and even I never made an entire blogpost dedicating to how overrated I think ANH and ESB are. But the truth is even most Disney Star Wars stuff I've found more value in then the OT.
I think a lot about the quote from C. S. Lewis about how wanting to be seen as a grown up is the real sign of not being a grown up. And in the context of Star Wars ranking The Last Jedi above the Ewok Movies and the Star Wars Special. All the book things ever said about The Last Jedi are all come doing to thinking it did something more "mature" and "adult" then anything Star Wars ever did before. However it's the "Leftist" version of that as opposed to the Right Wing version usually associated with being a Snyder fan.
Consumerism is a buzz word created by Capitalist to distract people away form actual Anti-Capitalism. The justifying ideology of Capitalism is Meritocracy and to a lesser extent Individualism. That's why saying "this movie has no reason to exist" and presenting it as a critique of Capitalism is an oxymoron.
RikaDot is pretentious but not in the condescending way Rick Worley was. His discovery about how bad the overarching moral of Star Wars is I am in completely agree with and am indebted to him for discovering.

I agree that the prequels were never "high art", I'm sure Lucas himself would laugh at that concept. They are simply blockbusters, but some of the finest and most thematically and culturally rich blockbusters out there. Revenge of the Sith is my personal favorite Star Wars movie and in my opinion the most impressive, but I think A New Hope is probably the most structurally sound. I would put Sith at an extremely close 2nd.

Why so many video essayist hate capitalism?
I'll be honest, most people who have a problem with capitalism really have a problem with corporatism. And then blame capitalism for something that has absolutely nothing to do with it.
That said I'm not gonna make assumptions about you and what you believe without knowing, and I'll try and watch your video objectively.
I don't mean to attack you, I'm just pointing at a recurring theme within a particular type of content.
I might add my thoughts on the video later as an edit.
    Cheers from France! 🍻
    *1st Edit*
You still haven't watched the later seasons of TCW, you should reconsider. Yes the first couple of seasons aren't that good (but not that bad either), the later season are pretty good.
You can probably find lists of the arcs that are more worth your time since there are still a few bad episodes that you might wanna skip.
But the build up towards the last arc is worth the time and the reward. Not gonna spoil anything here though just in case.
    *2nd Edit*
When it comes to the droid in Solo, it seems the original directors meant it as a caricature, but Howard (and maybe Disney) tried to make it look serious without changing enough of what had been previously planned. Hence why it's so ambiguous wether or not it's satire or not.
    *3rd Edit*
I didn't expect to see the Sequel movies so far apart, quite interesting.
Also, most of the people who dislike The Last Jedi are "bigoted *ssholes*. Maybe some of them are, but that's it.
Most people, whether you agree with them or not, have legitimate criticism.
I honestly enjoyed it overall when I saw it in the theater, even though there were thing I didn't like at all. I just ignored them subconsciously.
But there are things I genuinely liked. Rey and Kylo's interactions and Mark Hamill's acting. I'm specifying Mark and not Luke's portrayal. I'm one of those who think it was pretty much character assassination.
    *4th Edit*
It's really interesting that you put all of the Prequels above RotJ. Usually people only have RotS above it.
That said I see where you're coming from.
To me personally, I always have a hard time choosing which of the two are bes. I'd say I like Return more because it's the one I grew up with, and I saw Revenge at 16yo, right when the comedy didn't work as well to me.
I'd say the age at which I've seen each film affects a lot how I feel about them.
I've seen the OT as kid before the Special Editions were made, then saw each Prequel when they came out in theaters at 10/13/16. Starting as a kid then going through my teenage years as the movies released, I think it informed a lot how I see them.
And it probably applies to the Sequels as an adult.
That said, I still love the first 6 dearly.
    *5th (and last) Edit (hopefully)*
"Apology accepted, captain Needa." I love it.
I'll always see Empire as number one, but (as I've already mentioned) I understand where you're coming from. You've given your reasoning quite well.
I don't agree with all of your ranking, but I understand it and that's all I could ask for. It's honest.
One thing people tend to overlook when talking about Lucas, he's not just a writer/director but also an editor.
It's nice to see you praise his editing work.
Finally, Irvin Kershner was credited for Empire, but let's not fool ourselves. Lucas was the filmmaker.
Now I'll say I really liked your video
Even though I was a bit taken aback earlier on, I'm glad I stuck on and kept watching. Thank you.

I'd rank the main live action films as:
    11) Rise of Skywalker: It's just trash ripped straight from a wattpad fanfiction that tries to serve as damage control for episode 8, but in doing so muddles the themes of an already shaky trilogy and the saga as a whole. Theres some cool visuals though I guess.
    10) Force Awakens: Everyone says they love how it 'feels' like the OT when all that's present are the aesthetics. The film, with a few minor exceptions, is painfully unoriginal and afraid to explore new territory, and thereby doesn't justify its existence as part 7 of a 9 part story.
    9) Solo: There are some fun parts (and the casting is well done), but that can't really save it from painfully dull lighting and cinematography. The film also doesn't really have anything new to say about Han Solo as a character, and ends on a cliffhanger which will probably never be resolved.
    8) Rogue One: Loved it when it first came out but as the years have gone by... I've become highly critical of it. Nothing really happens for the first two acts, the characters (save for the droid) are forgettable, the world is just the aesthetics of the OT, it doesn't justify its existence, and even the fun third act has set pieces we've seen before. It did offer a non Jedi/Sith angle on the plot though, which was somewhat refreshing.
    7) Last Jedi: Johnson ATTEMPTS to provide commentary on the mythos of the saga but he falls flat, often muddling the movies themes or failing to make new points. I do however appreciate the attempt to go outside the box of nostalgia, and the film has a much more artistic look to it via its cinematography and style.
    6) Attack of the Clones: As you mentioned, the film is a fun blend of a whole host of different genres, so there is no end to the creativity and new iconography (Kamino alone is an atmospheric location to marvel at). The films plot of the Separatist leadership circling all the way back round to Coruscant is genius too. However, there are many action scenes which drag on too long from a pacing standpoint, and the mystery concerning Sifo-Dyas was never properly explained.
    5) Phantom Menace: What a great film. The characters opposing ideologies and viewpoints bounce off each other very well, and the seeds for the political conflict of the saga are expertly sown. Its themes are clear and complementary to the story of Star Wars as a whole. But, the second act slows down a bit too much imo and, for as much as the film wants to be 'the beginning', it's peculiar how no proper explanation for the Force is given like in ANH.
    4) A New Hope: The film's simplicity in its timeless story is its greatest strength alongside its cast of colourful characters. And of course, there is immense cultural significance concerning the influence ANH brought to fiction as a whole. But, I can't help but think how there are aspects to the film which don't feel as fleshed out or defined as they would be in the succeeding films.
    3) Return of the Jedi: Perhaps if I went back and rewatched it right now, I would be more critical. But as it stands in my books, ROTJ is an emotionally and thematically satisfying end to the story of both the OT and PT, with the latter having greatly strengthened the dramatic effect of the films ending in my eyes. There is admittedly an overly prolonged first act and not as much characterisation provided to Han and Leia, but the dynamic between Luke, Vader, and the Emperor is the creme de la creme of not just this film, but arguably of the entire saga.
    2) The Empire Strikes Back: What can I say about this film that hasn't already been said? It's a classic that was a grand successor to the original, built upon and expanded it in every way possible, and built towards one of the most iconic twists of all time. But I think that the characterisation of Vader is what makes this film brilliant - he's no longer a dark lord, but now a desperate father embarking on a personal crusade of sorts to reconnect with his flesh and blood, no matter the cost.
    1) The Holiday Special: Wookie sperm is a welcome addition to the franchise which elevated cinema and the style of Kubrick and Coppola in every conceivable manner -
Okay, the real number one is Revenge of the Sith. I'd say that Empire and Sith are both tied for the position of the best Star Wars movie, and that whichever one comes first is down to personal preference. I prefer the hellish fires of Mustafar and a break neck pace to the unforgiving of ice of Hoth and a steadier pace.
In some respects, Empire may be the better film concerning its handling of all its characters and well rounded plot. But Sith accomplishes so much more in its epic tragedy of a story than Empire.
It ties up the Clone Wars, Anakins transformation into Vader, the transition into an Empire, the destruction of the Jedi masterfully all while oozing with creativity in almost every scene and creating a visual and narrative bridge into ANH amidst its Macbethian plot. It does all this with a thrilling pace and incredible score, and I agree that ROTS is the best Star Wars will ever be.
After typing all of that and having a Star Wars profile pic, it might surprise you to know that I'm actually not a major Star Wars nerd anymore and regularly have moments in my life where I touch grass and focus on the more fundamental questions of life such as 'do I like bread too much?'

Worst to best main movies IMO:
Last jedi - the one that ultimately killed the franchise for the fans hoping for something groundbreaking
Rise of skywalker - albeit a mess from last jedi, its still a mess as its own right by writing themselves into a corner that had no way out from force awakens
Clones - cgi overload, plus haydens acting really made it unable to watch and take seriously, but lots of cool elements that could've been better implemented with better pacing
Force awakens - reignited the excitement from fans and felt like redemption for the prequels, although it was a copy paste of a new hope in the end.
Revenge - better than clones, also lots of dark action going on. A better bridge to a new hope without all the filler from rogue one
Phantom - more nostalgia for me really, but the jump in action scenes from the 80s was really cool, also it was before cgi really took over. Also qui gon is one of the better jedis in the series imo
Return of the jedi - lots of cool moments but several wtf moments. A decent closer to the og trilogy overall tho
New hope - the one that started it all, kind of a typical heros journey movie for what it is but still it has stood the test of time
Empire - the best star wars movie and just a well made movie in general
    Worst best side movies:
Solo - i haven't seen it but still can't remember who the guy playing han was lol, at least darth maul makes a cameo and danny glover makes a fun lando i guess
Rogue - very cool vader scenes but mostly forgettable characters and a thin plot thats just padding long enough to bride a new hope
Clone wars - ahsokas in it so it gets top spot lol
