      @@3DPrinty I am curious if you designed the whole part and then to split and add tabs and the brackets or did you designed half of it mirrored it and added the extrusion/cut for the tabs?

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  Год назад +1

      For this design I modeled half of it, mirrored it, then modeled the latching tabs. I knew the design was going to be mostly symmetrical, so that seemed like the easiest option to me.

    A quick idea for a future project if you need one, a door knob wall protector that has a latch to hold the door open. I uh....put a hole in my wall and need something to glue over it 😄
    Love your designs, this is a great one to show the wife it's not just a toy factory!

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  Год назад

      That sounds like a great use for 3D printing - especially in TPU!
      The final shape of something like that would depend greatly on the size and style of your specific door handle. I'd encourage you to give designing what you need a try :) There's a good chance you can build what you need within Tinkercad, which is both free and a good starting point with 3D design.

    • @brandonbolt3579
      @brandonbolt3579 Год назад

      I do use Tinkercad to modify STL's, though I'm not super good at it yet. Where I'm not sure on this design is how to make the hinge so that the latch doesn't stick out while it's not needed.

    I want to try to do the sign similar to this, but I would like the box to be with square edges and not with like this round part that the box in the video has, I don't know if I'm making sense but it's possible? Or do we need us to make the sliding part possible?

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  4 месяца назад +1

      If the box is large enough that the door can slide sideways without bending (like the classic sliding doors in Scifi or a Japanese shoji door) it could fit in a square box. If you want the door to be proportionally large (like in this design) you either need a soft rounded corner for the shutter to slide in or you need to tack on a fake sharp corner to make the box look square even though it secretly has a bend on the inside.
      I hope that helps!

    Why you not combining the "flat decorative insert" with the "staple" shape?
    Then the "decorative insert" would've require absolutely no glue. 😉

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  Год назад

      Definitely possible, but I don't have a multi-color printer (yet) so I needed to print the "Tea Time" sign flat... or use supports. And I really dislike supports. Good question!

    • @zsombor_99
      @zsombor_99 Год назад

      @@3DPrinty I think you can insert a command to park the printer after the specified layer then resume printing when you click the button on the printer, so, you would be able to change filament in mid-print. 🙄 Alternatively you can colour the raised letters with a sharpie or something similar, just don't give up. 😉

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  Год назад

      I must have misunderstood your first question and that lead to more confusion.
      The decorative insert is already available in a staple shape for glue-free installation. You have the option of either a staple shape or a flat sign.
      However, the arms of the staple forces us to print it on its side - great for a clean print, but not good for a mid-print filament swap.
      If you don't mind printing supports (or if you have a printer that can produce perfectly flat long bridges), you could print the staple-shaped sign so that the front of the sign faces up. In this position you can do a filament swap - just like I did with the "Tea Time" print in the video. I hope that clears up the confusion.

    Which filliment should be used for the shutter

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  Год назад

      While PETG would be ideal, PLA can work perfectly fine. For my prints, I used Duramic3D Marble PLA+, which is a nice tough PLA.
      I'd avoid silk or matte PLAs, as they are often extra brittle.

  • @johnalpa6086
    @johnalpa6086 Год назад

    Will the shutter work with just PLA?

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  Год назад +2

      Yes, but I'd avoid PLA blends that are extra brittle. Silk and matte PLAs are not a great match.
