It's nice, i'm not completely sold on the styling if im honest - but at that price, lets face it, Triumph have a sure winner on their hands here against the middleweight competition from Japan
Yamaha has sold a lot of MT07s. The Trident looks good but the Yamaha is also a fun bike to ride and for that matter so is the Honda and both are also known for their stone axe reliability. That being said, I think the Trident will sell very well. It comes in at a great price point, has the Triumph name, and a unique engine.
Having previously had the xsr700 (MT in drag), yes i rate the Yammie twin, but there is something about that Triumph triple and price makes it the winner imo
I’m sure some company will come up with some kind of luggage or rack system, problem is triumph designed the back end not to be luggage friendly which i fear is its down side as lets face it this really is a good priced commute bike but that rack, luggage point lets it down. Not everybody wants to wear a rucksack to commute.

Short story. I went to collect my Triumph Trident 660 from a dealer, thinking I was going to get the silver and red one. When I turned up to collect my new bike. I made the assumption it was going to be the one previously mentioned. To my shock I ordered the plain Jane black version. But now I'm liking it. Because it a nice subtle design, which I think grows on you. It's classic looking with a nice small triumph badge So in the end Im glad that I got that model.
I took my Tiger Explorer for it’s MoT and annual service to Youles Triumph in Blackburn this afternoon and due to the mezzanine lounge/waiting area I was able to ‘browse’ the bikes on the showroom from a social distance and I was mightily impressed with the Trident. Looking forward to booking a test ride when we’re able to. I’ll be keeping the Explorer for a long time yet, but the Trident would be the perfect second bike for when you just want a quick blast with your jeans on and a casual jacket.
Great review Great little bike for someone commuting or a Sunday blast but I will stick with my speed twin as i find this a fantastic all round bike stay safe looking forward to more videos 🇬🇧👍
Tempting 2nd bike!!. A bit random I know, but glad you're wearing a brighter helmet, I noticed on your previous 660 review you where in stealth mode all very dark. BTW I'm not a hi-viz guy, but please give the tin cans half a chance to see you.
We need to do our part to be seen. I go with white helmet, yellow high-vis vest, red bike, and otherwise black gear. I think it contrasts well with most backdrops.
My 09 Street Triple had the best chassis for a motorcycle that I have ever ridden. I am considering this bike. I'm 67 and don't need a track bike just a little fun bike. This seems to check all the boxes. I have a touring bike, a cruiser, and a dual sport. This should fill in the fun factor.
Triumph have had a bunch of experience giving their triple more low end punch with less power for the Australian/NZ LAMS version of the street triple, i.e. the learner legal version. I loved my LAMS Street triple.
From all considerations, it's a really smart bike by Triumph. Very nice. Packaged for the price very well. Appealing to new riders and people looking for a nice second bike. Well done Triumph.
I fall into the latter category and closed tbe deal on a Trident this week. As I type it's getting set up and I can't wait to bring it home! I really appreciate your review as you address all the things that I looked for when considering this machine. My first bike is a Speedmaster which I love, and wanted my second to be something altogether different but still a trusty Triumph. I'm glad you're loving it! Happy riding to you!
Do like it, still not enough to persuade me it's time to chop my 2018, 7000 mile XSR700 in for one. Couple of years perhaps, but will see what Yamaha do in response in the next 2 years.
Another great video review Andy. Test rode one Monday, Ordered it Tuesday, Delivered yesterday.Have a quickshifter coming ,that is a first for an oldie like me .Agree with all you said in this and previous reviews. Look forward to more . Thanks.
Back in the 70's I had a T160 Trident which was great fun but when I put a picture of it beside this new Trident I realised why I hate the modern 'Volvo car park' look so much. Try it and you'll see too!! Excellent summary of the bike Andy and definitely a great choice out of similar style and size options available at the moment!! Were I still riding I'd go out and find a T160 tomorrow!!
I've always said of the Triumphs I've owned (a few now) the guys who decide the gear ratios and the engine tune must live in town. Punch and grunt at real world speeds is spot on, 2nd,3rd and 4th gears upto and around 60mph is where this shows .
Great price. Lots of torque in the usable rev range. Excellent TFT display. Oh wait......I thought you were talking about the Kawasaki Z650 for a minute. Does the Trident have the torque of a twin and the smoothness of a four, or the torque of a four and the smoothness of a twin? Or is the triple really somewhere in the middle? It faces tough competition in the US. The Z650 has a better looking back end and its TFT display looks nicer. The MT-07 is more of a hooligan machine and the CB650 is too expensive.
Three things makes me want to get the Yamaha MT-07 instead. 1: Warranty. Here in Sweden the Yamaha comes with 5 years warranty (and the lowest fail rate of any brand). The Triumph 2 years. 2: I find the Yamaha is actually more fun to ride. The engine just feels more peppy somehow and it turns easier. 3: Resale value. Even if you have had the Yamaha for several years the value is still there. You will get a decent amount back on your investment. With all three out of the way I think both are great bikes but I am leaning towards Yamaha.
I must admit when I had the Yamaha MT-07 2017 before it was stolen. I had no concerns about it. Absolutely no problems with it. The only thing was the switch gear on the handlebars are a little shabby, especially the indicator switch no tactile feel when you use them. The bike is bullet proof. However the Triumph felt rough from the get go, gears felt as though they were not going into gear, now after 400 miles it feels a lot better. When you first turn the key, the injection system primes then makes a weird clunking sound, then this weird electric motor sound until you hit the start button then it doesn't start the first time. You need to prod the starter a second time. On the last ride it really worried me. On a cold startup there was a audible cam chain clatter. But then it dissappears very quickly. Heard that would happen if you leave the bike standing for several days. It's because of the hydraulic chain tensioner not having oil to get it to push against the cam chain guides. Bloody hell lovely looking bike, but this is definitely my last Triumph bike. Please don't get put off my experience. Maybe I'm being over critical and shouldn't compare my Triumph with the Yamaha. Maybe as long it doesn't break down, I will begin to love these eccentricity. I think you call it character. I guess my Yamaha must have been characterless.
A few have commented about the rear numberplate hanger - & let's face it we all replace standard position hangers with R&G anyway. I personally like this style of hanger but can't understand why manufacturers that use them don't incorporate the indicators into the rear light, or place them on the tail as per the gsxr's a few years ago. That would leave a much cleaner profile, lighter, so the stay/cable mount could be thinner, & then if they produced a (legal) curved numberplate doubling up as the "mudguard" it woudl be a much neater job - just needing a small numberplate led above it. Come on R&G.........
I ride a 2014 675R Street Triple & comparing the looks of the Trident & the Street Triple I like the new headlight & TFT screen but style wise everything else looks worse... How do you get a pillion on that seat? How do you fit a rear carrier for commuting? They've stuck Union Jack graphics on it so I presume it's designed over here & in that case why does the rain protection look so poor? I hope it sells well but the CB650 & MT 07 seem better bikes for commuting & for less than 8K you can get a low miles 765 Street Triple.
@@TheMissendenFlyer If this engine is as good as the reviewer's say, I would hope Triumph use it in a few models.Look at how many units Honda have sold with that 471 Parallel twin motor, likewise Suzuki with their 650 V twin & Yamaha with the 750 CP2 they've sold tens of thousands.I just hope Triumph can do something similar.
Nice one Flyer. It does look like super fun to ride and price to quality build ratio makes it a great buy . I’ve never ridden a triple. I’ve always owned big twins.
I'm happy to see a more mid-range triple offering by Triumph. Perfect amount of power for the real world, sounds great, Road 5 tires standard, and a very reasonable price. While I prefer analog gauges over digital, that monochrome unit looks very crisp and responsive -- I'd take it any day over the TFT.
Great Missenden town centre down to 20 mph too. Same for most towns and villages in central belt Scotland. So now there is more congestion and 'chelsea tractors', trucks and busses 'idling. AND ruining all the great bike rides I have around lol.

It's a new bike so there will probably be some teething problems but providing it's reliable and any warranty issues are sorted by Triumph this bike could well be one of their best sellers and a way onto the brand for people who've not had a Triumph before.
G'Day TMF. A great job on this 5 reasons preview, i agree with all your comments. This will be a top bike for the masses, it's an all rounder. I like it.
Another great video.. I've watched you test ride all forms of two wheels from bikes to scooters. But have you ever thought of test ride three wheel? In particular a Can Am spyder f3 s sport special!! Be interesting to have your point of view. As an old rider myself I'm thinking of converting to 3 wheels to prolong my riding life. Keep up the good work and thanks for your videos in particular this last year of covid19
Nice bullet point review Mr Flyer. Fully agree with your comments, seems like Triumph have ‘nailed it’. Great; engine, handling, controls, etc and above all a really fun bike to ride and at that prices what’s not to like 🤔
I agree with your 5 reasons & am seriously cosidering - only thing not sure of the look of the back end & lack of hugger..🤔..test ride arranged for mid april..Decisions😉. Great appraisal..
Great vid TMF! Considered using an external audio recorder (under the seat or in a backpack) and mixing the helmet volume in the edit? Bit of a faff but would be a huge upgrade for those exhaust sounds! :)
It's a really nice bike and if I had money I'd definitely consider it. Although I'd have to think about how I would change its rear end. From the riders seat backwards is definitely its weak point....
I’m looking forward test riding one. I think people have to remember not every one wants a Street Triple. Don’t get me wrong I love them but they aren’t for everyone! 🤔
Very interesting, the 660 is definitely on my radar. I am same height and weight as you. I get your point about useable grunt at lower speeds, but I do the odd track day, what do you think? I did see the Aprilia 660 vid from 'Chops' I wonder how they compare? I think you both have on long term at moment!!! Social distance meet perhaps? I love the look of the Triumph 660, I'm waiting to test in Thailand Cheers......(weather looking good)
Great vid, How would you compare it to the Street Triple, I have a 2013 Street triple which I love and looking forward to getting out a lot more in the coming weeks but I do like the Trident, wondering if it's an option
2nd reason: The engine. 5th reason: The engine again Sounds to me like a MT-07 would be a better choice, as it has the legendary CP2 engine. You can actually get a lot of aftermarket exhausts for the MT-07. Personally, the top 5 reasons i'd get a Trident is: nr.1: Build quality. Nr.2: material quality. Nr.3: ride quality. Nr4: Seat quality. Nr.5: Looks like quality. Or just, "it's good quality"
Cracking review Andy and very nice to hear you are planning a video on the TFT display! (I wonder what smart, charming, erudite person mentioned that in the previous video comments?) Hehehe! Have you seen the new TFT touchscreen on the new Indian bike? Same shape as this one but even better tech. THAT is how it should be done! Good on Triumph for making improvements though and not resting on their laurels.
Good points. I expect Triumph to sell a real lot of these. Will they sell anymore 660cc Street Triple A2s at £1k more ? I think that will get dropped. At one point I thought I also wanted a 4 cylinder bike. I tested some, very smooth, but you do have to wind them up more than a triple. A triple does give power more where you need it on road riding. Yeah I get it that to win at MotoGP or the Isle of Man, it really needs to be a 4 cylinder, on the road a triple is definitely in the goldilocks zone of torque and reviness (is that even a word ?)
You say the price is cheap but I still think the street triple R is a better option. By the time you add extras like quickshifter, take into account discounts on offer for the Street Triple (no discount on the Trident), and look at the low rate PCP there really isn’t much difference in the cost
The Trident looks nice, but as long as my Street Triple R 675 works, I won't replace it. Which gloves are you wearing here? Are they warm enough in the cold?
The most annoying about this bike in Australia is that its restricted to 39kws at 8750rpm soo yeah great for learners anything to give more option for new rider is a plus, but for people with full license who wanted a mid range un restricted bike would look away from it. I wish for triumph to release a derestricted version of this bike like the MT-07 HO and the unrestricted SV650, granted there is the street triple which are full powered and the restricted model but most would be put off by the headlights. It would be nice to get the UK model of this bike here as well with the restricted Australian vision like the speed triple, from what i heard the current version thats going on sale wont have a official derestrictor kit heads up for any one wondering.
Sadly she couldn't reach the deck when she sat on the one we had....so no can do I'm afraid! Enjoy your new bike (I'm assuming it's "as well as" not "instead of" Paul?)......
Did you do the video on the TFT Screen I looked at one of these today think it might just change my mind over the interceptor as a returning biker.cheers👍
Interesting comment you made regarding the "Triumph quality these days". Maybe the move to Thailand has paid off in more ways than one. Great bike, if only it could take luggage it would be perfect for me IMO
Regarding the quality of their bikes, I think it depends where you read. There are owners of Speed Twins with surprising accounts of corrosion and clocks fogging for example. And those who have no issues at all. Thruxton was the same, there's a long list for that one. Corrosion, random stalling, broken wiring loom at headstock, gear selector shaft shearing, water ingress to instruments, brake lever pulls to the bars on first pull, side stand spring breaking (bike cuts out as switch goes open circuit), arcing spark plug caps. There's probably other more trivial issues I've overlooked. I still own mine in spite of all this so work that one out🤷♂️
I actually prefer the sound of the inline 3 in cars... has that thrum that sounds more like an inline 6. Well, anything is better than the sound of an inline 4. On the bike I find it can sound a bit digital at high revs... as if it were the artificial sound from a driving video game.
@@TheMissendenFlyer I’m pretty sure you have, given that you find them in most small cars nowadays and also in the base trim of most compact cars like the Golf.
Andy, thanks for the videos, great for a relative newbie, truly valuable and considering joining. Unrelated to Trident can I just ask please what jacket you wore in this vid? Looks cool Cheers John
Nice little vid. The Trident's surely got to be the new class leader. Although while I think the Tuono 660 might well be a "better" bike, it's £2500 more which is a big premium. Very interested to see your impression of the Tuono as and when to see if that extra cost is worth it.
Just curious where you feel the CB fits? It's more powerful, looks better; subjective I know, not that the Trident isn't attractive, and priced within a skinny digit of the Triumph. It also has very good build quality, a screaming four cylinder engine, and should be very reliable.
@@kevincrockett5155 It's an interesting & valid point. I'm not really a fan of the CB but that's subjective as you say & it's definitely a serious competitor because the price of the Triumph has now pushed the ceiling of the class up to encompass the CB. Before it was about a grand+ more than the others bikes in this class with a lot more power so not a direct rival as such. Personally I think the Triumph is cooler & more desirable than the CB but the different engine configurations will play a role & it will be an interesting group test. The other Japanese manufacturers really need to up their game but ironically I would still buy an SV for that engine & spend the difference on a full system. Go figure lol.
Triumph renaming the Street Twin to the Speed 900, I thought was strange. That would make more sense for the Street Triple which is actually fast. They could have a range of these triple roadsters with peaky hard revving engines, and a more low down torque focused range for the road/Street. A 900 version of this Trident engine would be very interesting!
Looks excellent the Triumph , was chatting to a m8 the other other day Be wonderful if Kawasaki brought out a retro mid sized 4 stroke Triple (600cc) styled on their original H2 500cc 2 stroke "The Widow Maker" bike , i know they so the Z900RS but thats a 4 Cylinder and in a bigger class Was just a rambling thought Best regards Shaun
Nice bike and really when it comes down to it if that was the largest capacity legally on the road it's plenty fast enough especially in the UK where the roads are at best crowded if not down right chaotic . I don't know what the top end is but you could probably get close to loose you license territory .Good one : )

Thank you for your very helpful review. Let's say you have a 21 street triple rs and you're looking to put another bike in your garage, something a bit different, not way different, still a street bike that's fun and easy to ride and different enough from the streetrp to make it a fun addition to your garage. IYO, Is the Trident a contender for that slot. Thanks JS
I do like this bike though at over six foot and sixteen stone I reckon I need a larger one... Just messing with ya Andy, call me what you like, I worked in construction for years. It's amazing what you can call people if you smile while doing it! 😉👍
Thai-umph are missing a trick IMHO, and have been for a while. They no longer have any 3 cylinder sports bikes (of any engine size) in their portfolio any more, and haven't had any proper big capacity fully faired triple supersporters since the mid/late 00's when the Daytona 955i was dropped from the range. That bike had everything, everywhere.......mega bottom end grunt, stonking midrange shove and screaming, howling top end hyperdrive. Absolutely Cracking performance in every conceivable way. Why they don't bring out another big cc pure supersports triple is beyond me. Their 3 cylinder motor is now powering all the Moto2 bikes, so it's not like the engine configuration is uncompetitive or unproven, or that they lack knowledge or past experience in producing this genre of bike. I guess they are just too scared to go head to head with the other brands in the 1000cc+ Hyper/Superbike sector.....instead they are intent on churning out nondescript and uninspiring dross like this thing. Pity. If you want a naked roadster, adventure bike or modern classic, then Thai-umph can just about be bothered to offer you one........but if you want a full on sports bike, or a tourer, errrr, forget it, you've got no chance!!!! Oh yeah nearly forgot....they can however offer you an electric bicycle, yours for the paltry sum of £3k........I bet they sell loads of those!!!
This bike is so appealing to me. Perfect power sweetstop, traction control, triumph, looks, value. So good. Really thinking about switching from my XSR 900.
I made a mistake of selling my Xsr900 to go to a Xv950, two different bikes altogether , now I'm looking at the trident or cb650r , nothing will be as good as the xsr9!
@@TheMissendenFlyer it’s a lovely bike but it has its hidden long time problems that are getting on my nerves. Power isn’t something I would really miss. I love the look, very close to a neo modern classic look wise, or maybe it is. anyway it looks like a bike should do. But the only thing that would keep me from buying it is that I still cant go over the choice of the way the modern frames look or are constructed from. Basically if you have been around in at least the 90s you would remember that the budget bikes used cheap steel beam like frames like the Trident uses. Many bikes that are considered "budget or learner bikes" use simple steel frames like that or even steel frames that try to make you think it is a twin spar alu frame yet they do catch a fancy penny in the end. I just cant come over that such designs are now on much bigger bikes with much higher price tag than back in the 90s. The best solution if you ask me is the old hornet900,cb1000r and the current cb1000r(especially the prototype with the 80s clothing on... Nom nom nom, that is how you design a steel frame that is cheap yet nobody like me can start raging about that the frame looks cheap because it is hidden :P Dont get me started on the hideous and cheap looking trellis frame on the naked h2... omg, that fabulous frame of the h2 would look so nice on a naked bike but I guess every penny is to be saved and it is cheaper do design a new ugly one than change geo on the h2 frame(usually they dont do it at all, but change geo with longer swing arm, different susp links and different angles on the tripple crown/yokes. :P Bah, rant over, anyway Trident is basically how a classical bike should handle like, do we smell a retro clad version of the Trident coming up making the t100/t120 obsolete?

Not everybody wants to wear a rucksack to commute.
@@tonebonetones yes i have seen that great idea, allthough personally i wouldnt call the aprillia 660 a naked bike really ;-) It has a bunch of plastic and a very different seating position you know lol
Good it is, Must admit I think id take a two year old street triple 765 over this
I am 62 and just bought street triple off 85 years young rider 👌 absolutely love it amazing bike Diablo Red 😎 don’t miss my FireBlade anymore! Trident better for new riders it’s to small for me 5’11
Short story. It's classic looking with a nice small triumph badge
So in the end Im glad that I got that model.
Glad it all turned out ok in the end!
Indeed it would Mark....but so would a Royal Enfield Interceptor....
Was looking to buy the Aprilia Tuono 660 but will now consider for Trident.
Think you should ride both, completely different bikes.
Great review Great little bike for someone commuting or a Sunday blast but I will stick with my speed twin as i find this a fantastic all round bike stay safe looking forward to more videos 🇬🇧👍
Cheers Richard - yes, a Speed Twin this ain’t! ...although it’s still very good....

Tempting 2nd bike!!. A bit random I know, but glad you're wearing a brighter helmet, I noticed on your previous 660 review you where in stealth mode all very dark. BTW I'm not a hi-viz guy, but please give the tin cans half a chance to see you.
@motorguitarcycle yea it all helps, my gear is quite bright with a yellow helmet.
Agreed....
Totally agree Scott....
Thanks Andy, can’t wait to hear more of your thoughts! 👍😎🇦🇺
More to come!

Cheers for watching Mick...
I've always said of the Triumphs I've owned (a few now) the guys who decide the gear ratios and the engine tune must live in town. Punch and grunt at real world speeds is spot on, 2nd,3rd and 4th gears upto and around 60mph is where this shows .
100% with you - makes so much sense...
Must get me a go on a Z650....
The Rocket is also a triple! Though it is more of a car with two wheels than a regular motorcycle!
Yes as you say, depends what you want from a bike! Stay tuned for my comparison with the Street triple and CB650R soon!
You should give one a go!
It's definitely going to give the MT07 a run for the money, the triumph offers great value with fantastic looks.
Couldn't agree more! ...although this is a TFT of course (at least the top half is).....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Ah I hadn't even noticed the full-colour display in the bottom-half. It really is a great looking unit!

Great vid, How would you compare it to the Street Triple, I have a 2013 Street triple which I love and looking forward to getting out a lot more in the coming weeks but I do like the Trident, wondering if it's an option
I have a video comparing the two (and the Honda cb650r) coming soon!
2nd reason: The engine.
5th reason: The engine again
Sounds to me like a MT-07 would be a better choice, as it has the legendary CP2 engine. You can actually get a lot of aftermarket exhausts for the MT-07.
Personally, the top 5 reasons i'd get a Trident is: nr.1: Build quality. Nr.2: material quality. Nr.3: ride quality. Nr4: Seat quality. Nr.5: Looks like quality. Or just, "it's good quality"
Fair enough....it certainly feels like a quality machine (except for the brake pedal)..
Another Great Review I Love Triumph Motorcycle
Cracking review Andy and very nice to hear you are planning a video on the TFT display! (I wonder what smart, charming, erudite person mentioned that in the previous video comments?) Hehehe! Have you seen the new TFT touchscreen on the new Indian bike? Same shape as this one but even better tech. THAT is how it should be done! Good on Triumph for making improvements though and not resting on their laurels.
Agreed 100% - they’ve defo cracked it with this TFT....
I agree!
You say the price is cheap but I still think the street triple R is a better option. By the time you add extras like quickshifter, take into account discounts on offer for the Street Triple (no discount on the Trident), and look at the low rate PCP there really isn’t much difference in the cost
Fair enough....
The Trident looks nice, but as long as my Street Triple R 675 works, I won't replace it.
Which gloves are you wearing here? Are they warm enough in the cold?
Yep - they're Dane goretex gloves - great for winter....
Yes very odd decision by Triumph that isn't it...
I see TEC bike parts have one now so some good addons will be coming soon.

Interesting comment you made regarding the "Triumph quality these days". Maybe the move to Thailand has paid off in more ways than one.
Great bike, if only it could take luggage it would be perfect for me IMO
Yes the build quality of Triumphs is right up there these days....
I still own mine in spite of all this so work that one out🤷♂️
It’s funny how people hate the three cylinder sound in cars, but love it when it comes from a bike.
I actually prefer the sound of the inline 3 in cars... has that thrum that sounds more like an inline 6. Well, anything is better than the sound of an inline 4. On the bike I find it can sound a bit digital at high revs... as if it were the artificial sound from a driving video game.
I'm not sure I've ever actually heard a 3 cylinder car!

Nice little vid. The Trident's surely got to be the new class leader. Although while I think the Tuono 660 might well be a "better" bike, it's £2500 more which is a big premium. Very interested to see your impression of the Tuono as and when to see if that extra cost is worth it.
Yes I like the look of that too I must say....
That would be on the Tiger 900!

Just messing with ya Andy, call me what you like, I worked in construction for years. It's amazing what you can call people if you smile while doing it! 😉👍
Well spotted Si!
I think you'd miss the XSR's performance....
I don’t have so many places where I can fully use the power beside the autobahn. But then again I’m avoiding the autobahn.

I’m triple junkie…
Either this is really a great bike or the Triumph marketing team is on fire. I suspect it’s both 😎
I suspect you're right....I think this one will do very well for Triumph
Bah, rant over, anyway Trident is basically how a classical bike should handle like, do we smell a retro clad version of the Trident coming up making the t100/t120 obsolete?
An interesting thought!
