He automated himself out of a job. It wasn't unfair at all -- he did nothing for a year (apart from creating his script for moving files) and likely expected to be fired or given additional responsibilities. He should have began looking for another job as soon as he had nothing to do, as then he could have two jobs and only really need to work one!

Do I pay a cleaning lady to just sit in my kitchen in case I drop something later in the afternoon or does she leave after the job is done?

Do you pay a cleaning lady when you realize they arent cleaning but they are using a robot that is way cheaper to clean for you? Your own example counters your own argument.
You can make an argument about should we need to work in order to live or should we get a universal basic income but that's another philosophical argument all together. But as for the worker getting let go, no one is going to pay for something when they don't need to. Neither you nor your employer. It's not the company's responsibility to make sure he can still get paid while playing video games, you can argue it's the governments job to make sure there are social safety nets so people who do get laid off have some time to search for someone else before they go homeless.

That’s how I feel about blue collar jobs and most side hustles including e-commerce and peddling unnecessary shit.
Gig work only is a viable option in a good economy. There’s a ton of down sides that weren’t mentioned in this video for a balanced perspective. No benefits or health insurance, no pension or retirement assistance, taxes are all on you, and even a slight recession can totally throw off your ability to provide and pay the bills with no stress. Not to mention how saturated it’s become in the last few years. Gig work is great for secondary income. Don’t go into it thinking it is the best decision to make a living. Learn a trade and join a union. You will won’t have to worry about a recession or living in retirement, or any unplanned medical situations for you or your family.
That annoyed me when he was going through only the upsides, he doesn't look like he has enough life experience so maybe he's not aware? Also consultancy is probably a bit more safer than just a gig, where you can take your skills and offer your services for a good rate.
@@Glenningway same I’m sure he had some good intentions but you can easily mislead people, especially young people like his main YT demographic, into believing being a gig worker is better than a full time employee. It most likely is the lack of life experience. No one wants to work their life away, but working your ass off in the beginning is the best place to start to see where your gifts and passions are. It’s so easy to stand out and be successful in a trade or a hard skill these days because everyone has his mentality of being allergic to work, or looking for an “alternate route”. Pick something, show up consistently, work hard, and be eager to learn and you’ll have a great base.
@@SFX_714 I did this!....was fired from my job of nearly 7 years a few months ago for pretty much a machine issue haha. By time I was fired I basically felt like offing myself any day though so I suppose it was gonna end very soon one way or another. Switching to freelance work as an artist quite literally is the reason I'm still here breathing...That lifestyle of only living to please others higher up than you on the food chain works and paysoff for a "lucky" few but numbers don't lie - it's just not worth it for pretty much everyone. Love the term "allergic to work" too. People don't mind meaningful work. But most people are products of their circumstances and their "choices" are 1.) take this pretty sh*t offer and get by barely or 2.) idk starve lol next

I'm just gonna embrace the fact that I might never """retire""" in the traditional sense. Can't work the time needed to put money into Social Security, so why bother thinking that I'm supposedly gonna just up and stop working come 65 or 70.
Busywork/makework/fake work drives me up the wall. Give me meaningless shit to do just to "keep me busy" if I finish early? Ok, I'll just slow down on my actual work so it takes a full eight hours to do then. You shouldn't be punished for being efficient and good at your job.
We had a code word at my last job: “broccoli”, which meant the manager was rounding the corner and we all had to look busy. I am so glad I work from home now, so now I can do laundry and start dinner instead of looking busy when someone shouts out the name of a vegetable.

Same. We didn't have a code word, but it was a weird scramble when our boss came into view. Now, I can fold clothes or take care of the dogs or play a pc game in my down time. I've increased the number of books I read as well. It's not my fault that my workload is lacking or that they make it easy for me to get all my tasks done efficiently. My husband even urged me to automate some of my work and I told him that wasn't even necessary, because it doesn't take me very long to do it.
I work at a law firm and 90% of most of my days is me doing busy work and by that I mean "checking my spreadsheets" so that according to my computer, I'm working

Well the wages of foreign laborers can be just a tiny fraction of the wages of US workers- thats often why they do it! wages 1/20 as high!

The problem is corporate capitalism, which is a corruption of true capitalism. Why do I say that corporate capitalism not true capitalism? For one, corporations are not risking their own money. The corporate capitalist system allows them to privatize the profits but socialize the risk. The system also stifles competition (a key component of true capitalism) by favoring corporations over small business and by favoring larger corporations over smaller ones. If unchecked, this leads to so much consolidation in the market that monopolies form. And as these monopolies form, the customers and employees of those companies have fewer and fewer options. This leads to price inflation along with stagnant wages. If a labor shortage begins to develop as it was in 2021-2022 and laborers start gaining bargaining power, then they use shareholder money to pay off politicians to throw open the southern border and flood the country with cheap labor. You see, in the same way that socialism leads to communism, corporate capitalism leads to an oligarchy. This is where we are currently at as a nation.

I retired from a union grocery company. I worked full time for 35 years. I got my pension and loving it. It wasn't the glamorous job, but it kept me employed during all the business cycles. It was a recession proof job.
Right. Less than 8% of Americans have union jobs now. Your generation, including my parents, lived in a time when working one job for great pay with great benefits was the norm. Times have changed and millennials like myself would rather travel blog, live off of English teaching, RUclips, and other side hustles,. When I graduated from college with an education chemistry, the biotech company that hired me for one year wouldn’t extend me because I didn’t have any experiencein their type of work. So I gave up and moved onto something else.
I got demoted as a federal employee, but I stayed for another 10 years to get my pension
@@darrellbratton9679 I’ve seen that many times when our coworkers wanted to leave the union for a managerial position. I always tell them that I will probably last longer in the industry than they would if I didn’t do anything illegal. I’m glad I did because 99% of the people who left the union eventually quit or got fired. To them, they wanted the title & pay. I wanted steady income and started investing in equities back in the 1980’s and done real well. I fully retired at 58.
You are very lucky, I just read a post from someone else working for Walmart for like 20 years and the moment he got cancer. They fired him. Union job is very nice.

G dang I feel the fake work problem. At my last job we had queues with jobs we were supposed to fill the day with. We could pick up work along the way but that was hit or miss. Most of the time in our slow season all of us were stretching out about 3-4 hours worth of work across 8 hours. When they coudlnt come up with something to keep us busy we were sent to help other departments that didn't really need it. There was so much time I wanted to go home and work in my garden, work out, or at least go for a walk and I couldn't because I had to be there even though there was nothing I could do.
and alot of the "fake-work" or "make-work" workers are still employed in 6figure IT jobs whilst much of the top talent, key leaders and contributors alike are unemployed and getting rejected left and right by interviewers who are more along those lines of the fake/make-work workers
Hey, corporate jobs have never cared about employees, especially my Generation X. If you noticed pension plans are no longer offered and 401k plans were savings accounts now turned into retirement accounts.
Yep, we GenX were screwed by Boomers, and now screwed by Millennials and those rising into power.
If people did their research, most in the U.S. don't work from 9:00AM-5:00PM. The 9-5 hasn't been the norm since the 2000s!
I'm on HR review at work for this same reason. I did my job but if I completed my tasks before working 8 hours they say I'm not productive enough
Sen Bernie Sanders wants to change the work week from 5 days to 4 days. I wonder if it would change the 9 to 5. Or reveal that employees are trying to look busy.
It’ll create a de facto second shift where office people are pushed to wfh on the new “day off”, and encourage the hiring of two 20-hour part-timers, no benefits, for coverage in jobs that have to be face to face. We did this already with the temp agency revolution in the late 80s/early 90s-in an employer’s market, the employee gets nothing, no stability, no benefits, sinking pay.
Honestly a 4 day work week but 10 hour day would absolutely be preferable to five 8-hour days. Also that would mean one less commute, one extra day of better sleep, and an extra day per week to do something else that's not waging.

9 to 5 in the UK is virtually gone, jobs are advertised and 'you are expected to be flexible,' ie give your life just for the company. I am currently looking for a p/t job, yet I have about as much enthusiasm to do this as put a gun in my mouth.
Yup, if you want true freedom, you have to ultimately employ yourself. Putting your financial eggs in the basket of your 9-5 employer makes you VERY vulnerable.
These corporations have no loyalty towards you, so be strategic about how much of your time and sanity you dedicate to their business goals.
I never understood some people and their cult like loyalty to their employer. I am loyal to the people i work with who i made friends not the firm. They will fire me in an instance if it benefits them, just like I will leave them if it benefits me. I also hate employee participation in company BS or any thing involving celebrating month of X whoever group. I come to work to work and get paid, thats the job.
It’s also a problem that work is too complicated now. Most people want a paper pushing routine IME. They can’t deal with all of the ad hoc stuff and problem solving. So the few smart people end up burnt out while everyone is lost and getting paid about the same

Another EXCELLENT video. Human work norms have always been changing over the centuries. Even in modern times after the industrial revolution, 9-5 would have been considered luxurious. For a brief period in the 20th century, 9-5 was the norm. I like that Vincent pointed out that today, corporate 9-5 actually means 24/7. Good observation that things are moving toward the at-will gig model. Beyond the gig economy, we have reached the point where multiple jobs are often a necessity and eventually may become the norm. I like the three tips for future-proofing your career. Regarding "time is money", always remember this is only true from the business perspective. In reality, time is actually a finite resource, the one thing that you own outright, and your most precious possession. Give it away at your peril. It is NOT always the best idea to see it as something that you need to receive dollars for. You should use it to your best interests.
My wife works an average of 60 hours a week she is an engineer!

Having a full time remote job that's also flexible for hours is great compromise. With the right company/job, you can balance out some weeks it's a lot, other times you don't do as much but don't need to fake work necessarily.
We are choosing freedom over security....plus employers dont want to pay benefits thus they hire independent contractors
With gig work you don't have 401K, medical insurance, sick days and other things that keep you going when you're not able to work. Also how freelancing different from contractors? Companies prefer to work with body shops like EPAM rather than individuals. Freelancers are getting peanuts.

My issue with gig work is I've found that many don't pay well or offer benefits, since the "gig" is your own business you're likely to fund your own insurance, which is very pricy in the US. At least pre-COVID.
And when the gig ends, you're out of work until you find another.

And you're trading one boss for everyone is your boss. And flexibility to work when you want means you have to work all the time at any hour you can get work.

This is not new. This has been going on since 2001. I think that era really changed the work economy and the economy in general for the worse.
I never thought about "gig work" and not much about freelancing. This is great information. However, the problem I see with this new trend of working alone is ..... loneliness issues getting even even worse (it's already sky high). There is noone else to interact with; no new people to meet.

I can assure you that this is entirely an American thing and not everywhere there, either. See Sales Jobs. You bring numbers or you're out. Come to Europe, Germany in particular. Try the "look busy" thing here. You'll be out sooner than you'll realize. The whole "there is nothing to do" is so deeply entrenchened American culture, I don't think any of you Americans grasp how different your reality is from the rest of the world. Except for Japan maybe, who have the "stay in office til the boss leaves" culture coming from their honor-culture. But that's it.
Having a “job” has become a dangerous prospect. It’s (almost) riskier to gamble your life away with a 9-5 than starting your own company. We’re close to a big shift in how work gets done. It makes sense to me to get ahead of this movement now.

Agreed! In fact the 8 hour tradition gives me a great reason to leave “early” since work is never done.
I am a finance data analyst and yeah there is enough work for 8 hours or more but it just is not realistic at all to expect anyone to work for that long in deep work for a mentally intensive job. You have no choice but to do some fake work just to take a break and let your brain recover. Hopefully my corporation is not spying on me right now reading my comment haha
Gig-work only is often is impossible to maintain in field like software engineering. Gaining knowledge of the current systems and leaving a system that can be maintained and have it running for the future in a short timespan is impossible. That said, I can agree that many companies can benefit from having less full time employees and more independent contractors in fields like this. I literally have no idea what some of my coworkers do everyday because the output is just not there

In Finland, we have the so-called zero-hour work contracts. They are "come to work when called" contracts that don't guarantee that you will have a certain number of working hours per week, but that you will only come to work when the employer needs you. You are still counted as a full-time employee and the phantom salary that you don't get is counted as a potential salary that you could have received. Its name comes from the fact that it is possible to make workweeks under that contract where you have zero working hours and you don't even get paid for this time, because you only get paid for working hours worked. In such an agreement, the employer's working time requirement for the employee is, for example, that the employee has nothing that would prevent they from coming to work, for example, one hour or half after the call, and this applies to taking other jobs because it would affect the employee's availability when called. It sucks for the employee, but at least the employers like it. If anyone even wonders how this is possible, we do not have a statutory minimum wage in Finland and no politicians who would be interested in changing this situation. The minimum wage is agreed freely between the employee and the employer or the trade union and the company so that there is flexibility in the wage.

I think you said absolete but meant to say obsolete. Also knowledge work has been a thing for decades. Multiple jobs has become a necessity for multiple reasons. Results vs time is a management shift but they're not effective at measuring the desired results and that affects the relationship and expectations. Good job thank you.
The issue with “finish your tasks” is that in many white collar roles, the “tasks” are just your morning routine and your actual job and what you put in your review and what you discuss in meeting is all of the troubleshooting and coding and automation

@@VincentChan tough job case management at Tuberculosis Control in New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. I am 50 and single... I just roll with a job until I retire with a pension. That is all. Grateful for the free health insurance.
Also at my job everyone commutes from ages late 20 to 70 all live far away, misery and all waiting for that pension to kick in and free health insurance.

(Company Probably ate it) And i doubt most retired people are looking to get into legal issues so they avoid doing anything about it. (This wasn't just in case of one person but more than one too).
- So they got nothing, thankfully they atleast got the one time big amount of money they get at the end of the retirement so they could invest that to atleast get an interest on it. You probably won't face it if your company was good though & depending on where you're living, but having a second plan is a good idea.

I started my little business around five years ago now since i kept being forced to choose between my childs health and my job, it has simultaneously been the most challenging and most rewarding thing ive ever done. Its incredibly hard but it's incredibly freeing and ive grown it to a point where i make enough to constitute a decent part time job. I can actually say im almost to the point of needing my own employees. Maybe one day.
I've been saying this for years before I knew the term "knowledge worker". I would say, I don't work in a factory, why am I puching in and out like a factory worker.

Freelancer work can work in many cases, but not all cases. In essence, freelancers don't get benefits. Employees do. Its actually more detrimental to freelancers in almost every way than to be an employer.
The thing you didn't talk about is how being a free lancer costs more money than being an employee.
HO + Freelancing = 0% knowledge transfer between employees. That's a disadvantage for both sides.
Yeah even in my current role. I sometimes finish my work early and just pretend to be busy for the full hour shift to be over lol

@@VincentChan oh its terrible but it motivated me to learn new skills i mainly trade stocks like a hedge fund now the 9-5 is just a safety net for the bills slowly turning something i learned as a hobby to a job would be amazing
I highly doubt they are paying any better. One of the biggest lies happening now it that blue collar jobs will make you wealthy.
Now being a business man first in the blue collar sector that may be true but it's being the "entrepreneur " that is the success part.

I am still in a 9 to 5 for now, I earn enough to pay for everything and paying off my student loan. After that I will look what do after that. Like investing.also my job increases it salary drastically as I work for the government in my country. ( I will have 20% increase this year ) and had same last year
Gig work could work for people who makes enough money to save for down time, taxes, health insurance, and other expenses, retirement, etc. This where having a good job or working for a reputable company with great benefits increases your chances to have a better future.
My assembly job got rates for builds. I be getting 8 hours worth of work done in 5 I ain’t finna be not a single 1 over the rate cuz my pay stays the same
This only applies to office jobs, tbh. Jobs like mine, delivery, or construction and such work fine with the 8+ hour schedule.

I’m in my office plotting additional ways to make money. Also have a second job and saving money and investing a lot.
I just do a small giggle every time a young person realizes that they are nothing more than an “at will employee”. I also giggle whenever my coworkers proudly display pictures of the CEO shaking their hand on their work anniversary AS IF he remembers, cares, or places your picture on his desk
But filling in time until finish with no work although counter productive, it pays the bills. If we don't have this and get told to work half the day our pay will be cut. No point mentioning this.
Always stretch your work out!!! Never let them learn you can do more… then eventually your 15min breaks and off days are luxuries

In my industry, the freelancers are all gobbled up by large consulting firms and there's a premium for typically worse talent.
I figured this out in 2010 itself and didn't do a degree. Just focused on the skills needed to get highly paid jobs

Gig work will ultimately employee individuals in India, Mexico, etc. many have been educated in Canada, USA, UK and once have degree go back to home country. These countries will become the hub of gig work and contractor jobs. North America will loose big.
I could do three people’s work in 1 hour per day. I had templates that I put together that made things take no time.

Karl Marx was right, you are a factor of production and consumption. Your employer is not interested in your humanity and is often openly hostile to it. Unions were developed in direct response to this reality. Overpopulation has also played a role as it cheapens your value when there are millions of people trained to be a classical musician or medical specialist. Just look at the plummeting job satisfaction of doctors and lawyers as one indicator. I suggest your voting patterns and choices about reproduction take into account these harsh truths.
First. Also I've yet to work a white collared job that actually has a union and that includes multiple fortune 500 companies.
