I was on the fence initially because I thought the figures looked odd. Once I saw them for myself I actually quite liked them. I wouldn’t want all my figures to be this style, but they certainly work here. With the two TOS pack out now there is a ton of stuff to play with. I’d like to see a Borg Queen pack, another Romulan pack, and just about anything else they could come up with. I do wish that the Q stuff was available to buy rather than as a play kit. Make sure you grab the Jan 2024 FAQ, it has a fix for the Borg as well as a few additional clarifications that improve play.
Played a couple of playtest games in its early development with the Klingons, they have a lot more combat focused ways to score points so if you want to be more direct and less running around fixing things, Klingon all the way. On a related note, Gowron with a Disruptor rifle is scary! So are Borg that just wont stay down/keep regenerating! Was like a zombie movie where Gowron was mowing them down but was struggling to keep up with the numbers.
These minis are so bizarre. They look like janky 3D printed bobble-heads. Overall this game/aesthetic looks like it was made around the time the actual TNG show came out. >
Excellent review. It only makes sense that this should end up as one of the great Star Trek games. It is heavily based GW’s most excellent Warhammer Underworlds (“WU”) mechanics. I believe it is GW’s best game released since 2001 (and among Gw’s best games ever made). I am glad to see this continues that system and expands it to my beloved Star Trek.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer I'll end up trying the actual Away Missions game with the guys from my regular group, however, for me I think this will be a great product to serve as a physical representation of Away Missions in the TTRPG when combined with other resources. Admittedly I'll need something for the ships which is why I'm eyeing up Attack Wing for this as the Wizkids Fleet game doesn't seem to be available anymore.
Sold! Now to think about a storage solution for all the content and inevitable future expansions (some already announced!) Btw I'm with you, I love the look of the minis.
Great video, as always. Million dollar question from what I've seen on a few other videos - from what you've seen is the Federation overpowered vs. the Borg? (unbalanced in terms of the Borg having a harder time scoring points)
This isa fantastic game, i hope there will be more expansion and a solo/coop mode!!! But i have a question about the team composition. In the rulebook, it is state that i can swap a specialist with a specialist and a commander with a commander so, for example, i can change Riker with Piacard and Shelby with Laforge. However, in case i want to change other characters (besides Specialist and Commander), i could for example also include Deanna and Wesley in my team and then go beyond 4/5 members in total or is there a limit to the party number? I read the rulebook many times but this rule is not specified… Thank u!
Yes, but note that the themed dice for each are sold separately, which is kind of sucky. And to play with more than two factions you need an additional copy of the base game (SUPER sucky).
@@MaryJoSminkey Thank you. FFG is a company noted for getting customer to buy more than one core copy of a game. I loved Warhammer 40K: Conquest game but you do needed 2 for a decent set and 3 core set if you wanted to go into tournaments. So I do hate having to buy more than 1 core set.
What does captain Kirk say to his onboard crush before he beams down to a planet for diplomacy with a green skinned, big-bosomed alien ? ... ... .. .... "I'm going on a 'playing away' mission.
Better that than overstay its welcome. I like a game that is short and sweet. It forces the player to make meaningful, touch choices with every action.
Cody, I appreciate your reviews and opinion but I totally disagree with you on the aesthetics of this game. Those minis are horrible. If they wanted to go chibi, then go chibi not this aberration between the two. Screenshot cards can be fine but these look really grainy and unprofessional. With all the fantastic artists out there that could use the work and money, it just seems like a cheap-ass way for GF9 to save some $$$. That's why the make vanilla and chocolate! We disagree. Bottom line, I want to play this game without further judgement. I won't let the horrible look of the game stop me from playing it. But it will stop me from buying it.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer : I did read the rulebook last night and it's well laid out with good explanations of the rules. I'm looking forward to playing it. Thanks again for another great video!

It´s from GF9, there will be expansions - LOTS of expansions.
Hopefully!
Am I looking forward to this one? Yes! Great vid 👍
Thanks! Great game!
Oh god it would have been instant buy if there was a solo mode
Maybe they'll come out with a solo mode at some point.
Or on the flip side, that it supported 3-4 players without having to buy an ENTIRE additional copy of the base game! WTF.

To each their own. I think they look great.
Their heads are too big for their bodies.
@@kurtl8425 Bah!
I like them. If they were more realistic, they would be too hard to tell apart from each other.
I wish I could afford this. I can't wait to get to this, I wanna paint these minis so bad.
I wish I painted.

Admittedly this caught my eye but I'm thinking of picking it up to use in conjunction with the upcoming solo Star Trek RPG from Modiphius
That may work.

Yeah. I’m wrestling with storage solution ideas myself. First world problems!

I have seen the federation win more than the borg, but barely

Your best bet is to ask that question in the forums on BGG. Best of luck.
Any suggestions on how to build a Romulan or Klingon deck?
Not yet.
Do the expansions come with more missions cards
Yes.
I am curious but image they have to. But the expansions must have to have new cards. Also can the Klingons go after the Borg?
Yes. You can use whatever factions you want.
Yes, but note that the themed dice for each are sold separately, which is kind of sucky. And to play with more than two factions you need an additional copy of the base game (SUPER sucky).

Star Trek Alliance is also great game. If you like Attack Wing or X-wing. It has a great solo mode.
I haven’t played it. Thanks.
Wait, did they re-use the borg and federation dice from Ascendancy? LMAO if so
I don't think so.
Strongly recommend starfleet battles if you have the time and brain space to learn to play it. It is beyond rewarding.... though very complicated....

Have you tried playing 4 turns?
Nope.
Mulligan not MacGuffin :)
That, too.
Well... there goes my money.
It’s what I do.
This looks good but GF9 have scarred me a bit with Aliens (Another glorious day) boardgame…
That one was not my favorite. But I really like this one.
3 rounds sounds too short.

I was interested until I got a closer look at the miniatures. What incompetent bungler designed these ridiculous bobble-head monstrosities? 🤣
I like ‘em!

Just use counters. The minis are glorified tokens in the end.
