    I want to thank you so much? I had my C6-C7 mobi-c disc replacement on 6/5. I was terrified and watched this video so many times you were very informative and funny at the same time. Thank you I thought I would never feel normal again and because of you I had the strength to do it. You are a blessing hugz.

    I'm 34 and having 2 replaced. I have severe spinal compression. I'm not on pain meds and haven't had injections. They refused injections. I have a 2 year old and omg I'm seriously not sure how I've made it this far. When you have someone counting on you, the stregnth you have is incredible- super woman. Stregnth you didn't know you had. I wish I had a little help but I'm beyond excited about this surgery. I don't even care about the scar. ❤

    thanks for this video, I'm a 55yr old disabled vet who had a ruptured disc C6 C7 2 yrs ago but the Dr. went in at the back of my neck. Felt great! Now I have 2 cervical bulged discs w/spurs. Damn! Oh the VA did pay for the surgery.

    Hi Sonja, that you so much for posting this follow up video. I just had my 2nd surgery for another herniated disc on C45 level. Ugh!!! Had C56 fused in December 2010. My surgeon recommended ADR this time. I got the MOBI-C disc. It's currently the only Disc FDA approved for 2 levels. I am about a week and 1/2 post surgery. Doing well but sleeping kinda stinks right now. I am 35 so I am worried about the disc lifespan as well. Had the exact pain you described in your video on my previous level surgery. It is terrible and I don't wish it on my worst enemy. Anyhow, thanks again for posting this video. It's good to hear positive stories. Looking at reviews online is scary sometimes. Take care and God Bless you. -Justin

      How in the world did you hurt yourself in the first place to require all that? Sleeping is hard at first, you have to find just the right position, forgot about that, lol.

    • @jcook1437

      I have no idea lol! Only been in a few car accidents but nothing major (so I think) and I went to work afterwards. Played baseball in HS and college, workout and run like an average person. My surgeon says it doesn't take anything for a disc to herniate. I think it's my line of work (accountant) working all day on a computer. Constant microscopic tears over time.That's all I can think of. My surgeon said told me I could go "play football" after my first fusion. So I loved it up and did anything I wanted. This time I am going to be very cautious about everything. Dont want to have another surgery!!! Take care.

      I was one of 2 patients receiving ProDiscs 7 years ago. The other fellow hurt his neck in college playing football. I got mine in a military training exercise. We both suffered for about 6 years (Motrin, PT, Chiropractor, etc.) before we got MRIs showing the damage. He received implants at 2 levels. He also had to pack up his house and move from Ohio to S. Carolina 3 days later and seemed to do fine. Unless the Prodisc was limited after that time, it should be OK for multiple levels. They did a lot of that in Europe. I haven't researched it lately.

    When I researched the ProDisc, I saw that they were tested to about 40 million movements for the FDA approval process. It is estimated that there are about 4 million in a lifetime. I love my replacement. I stopped at an Indian restaurant on the way home for lunch the next day. Got hit in the head playing volleyball a month later and there was no neck pain from it. A while back there was a video of a woman who was crying her eyes out after the same surgery from happiness. You immediately know your life is changed when you wake up.

      I had my implant done at WPAFB Med Ctr. I am a military retiree. It is an outrage that they left you hanging this long. Do you have a recent MRI scan? If there is any way I can help you, please let me know. If they decline your authorization don't let it end there.

    • @FATHERKNOSEBEST

      Yes, thanks. I had to go to therapy, etc, etc before seeing a specialist. Long period. Ugh! The ball starts rolling today because my spine surgeon says they're contacting The VA Choice today for what they feel is urgent. Yeah, MRI, Xrays, Cat scan. Ive had it all now. Sounds like you've had experience with the tight fisted system.Thanks.

    • @2300Kenzie

      Actually I was fortunate to have a military neurosurgeon that liked the synthetic discs. Most recommend fusion, as did a civilian second opinion. However I am a researcher and after reading >600 articles on the topic, I found that the approved implants did well. I believe that if you have a herniated cervical disc and want an physically active life, an implant is the way to go. I did wait 2 months until my doc went to training for the new disc that I wanted. (I didn't want the Prestige.) If I can help you, please let me know.

    I'm 59 and had C4-7 fusion, no pain what so ever, currently 3 weeks out from surgery. I was not a candidate for the replacement disc because of a tiny spot of arthritis seen in the MRI. Neurologist suggest not allowing Chiropractic manipulation of the neck when you are older. If you are researching this surgery do not hesitate, life will be better. My second day at home I starting walking for exercise increasing distance every few days.

    I have multiple disc replacement multiple fusions I’m 67. I never have had a neck brace after surgery. However I do wear a soft collar only when FLYING TAKE OFF. AND LANDING. Only. I keep my soft Collar attached to my travel case not to forget it. I was in shock so to speak after surgery. The unbearable pain I endured before was. GONE I. Am doing strengthening exercises my surgeon in Springfield Missouri Dr Rahman. I HIGHLY Recommend is compassionate. Patient he’s amazing. I love him. So much his staff is also HIGHLY qualified. I am so happy I’m able to drive. I’m walking without. Walker cane. I was in a wheel chair for a while before the surgery. DONT. Put it off. Stop suffering my first. Fusion was 6 years before the second. Cause I put it off. Be HONEST. With your DR. If using ice packs daily. You cant drive. Dropping things. GET HELP. I. Didn’t go till. I could no longer make a bed go grocery shopping. Drive pick up things I kept dropping. IM telling you this because it only gets worse. Does. NOT. Just go. Away I couldn’t hold a paper cup full of anything. Its been a year since my last one all because of a whiplash. Don’t put that off either. Get a Gell cushion. Great for your back and neck. They have at truck stops. Called. WONDERGEL. Are the best for sitting long hours at a piano or Driving amazing. M. Also get a sport bottle it has a silicone mouthpiece straw built in. Walmart carries drink lying down even doesn’t stress the neck. A 4 wheel walker is a must have with seat to place items on traveling through your house fridge laundry meals. Helps sooo much. GOD BLESS YOU

    Thank you for the video. It was good to hear another's experience of having pain and getting treatment that worked. After a very active life style at the age if 75 I started having severe pain, numbness and pins and needles from my neck to entire left shoulder, arm and hand. I thought it might be another rotator cuff tear like I had 4 years ago on my right shoulder, but my left shoulder was OK and not the problem. MRI showed severe stenosis between C4 and C5 with no space around spinal cord at all. The surgeon recommended ACDF probably because of my age, but we have another appt to discuss everything and I will ask about disc replacement. But arthritis is present and I guess that's another reason fusion is the usual remedy and a redo probably isn't in the cards 15-20 years down the road. I glad it worked out for you. I just hope to be rid of the pain and enjoy doing my usual activities again.

  • @EricThompson-gs9ce
    @EricThompson-gs9ce 5 лет назад

    I had the same surgery but I didn't know that you could put in a artificial disc. I got two fusions instead. It would've been nice to of known if there is an option. I'm glad that it worked out for you Sonya because you're not kidding, that pain is unbearable. I, like you, was immediately relieved after that surgery. however because I had the fusions, I don't have any mobility like I used to. Plus if you sleep wrong you get the worst headaches. So anybody needing a fusion or a C 5-6 removed, check out your options before you have them weld your bones together. One more thing to add, but they give you epidural shots you will gain a lot of weight from the Cortizone. I gained 40 pounds.

      Hi Sonia, I am in need of a disk replacement in the C6-C7 area. I just saw your video which gives me comfort in moving forward in the replacement. I have a herniated disk and have tried all of the preliminary options including PT, chiropractor, injections 3 different times with releif at all. I have muscle spasms in my neck down to the middle of my back on the right side as well as numbness, tingleing in my hands which also makes them cold to the touch. How is your current condition post surgery?

    I traveled to Barcelona Spine Center Dr. Clavel in 2016 for a Lumbar Spinal Kinetics M6L and paid $26k and then again in 2018 for the two level cervical with the ESP discs and paid $35k. VERY happy.

    • @marioalday5966
      @marioalday5966 5 лет назад

      Did you get all expenses covered by 35K? I live in Spain and have asked another surgeon (not in Barcelona) and they ask for 30K for both C5 and C6. They have handed a detailed budget report which accounts for every minor detail, except post op cares are not included. So i wonder there may be other hidden costs. I dont need hotel and traveling fortunately. By the way, each disc costs 6000USD!

    I couldn't agree more! Chiropractors love to get 'a crack' so they can justify charging a small fortune (they even use tables with built in 'crack' noise). If you have a failed disc, no amount of manipulation will fix it no matter how loud the crack. Failed discs need rest and time to improve; any disturbance will cause pain and debilitation. Your scar isn't noticeable, I looked before you mentioned it and assumed they must have done it from the back.

    • @bodeghost
      @bodeghost 6 лет назад +1

      Iazzaboyce... Well said. I have an AMAZING Chiropractor & yes, even she said if you have a ruptured disc, I will NOT adjust the neck at all. Upon having my MRI reviewed by she & a neurosurgeon, I need Anterior & Posterior, ACDF SURGERY. Thank you for the added advice, information! 🍀

  • @BjornPettersen

    Great video. I wish the replacement disks were available when i had my surgeries (c4-c5 in '96 and c5-c6 in '03). I have 180 degrees of motion, which isn't very much less than I had before, so excellent results are possible with fusions also. My last surgery was done in one day, and I left with a soft collar. A slightly sore throat was probably the worst part. My first surgery used donor bone from my hip (which meant my hip hurt much more than my neck after the surgery).
    Like you I remember the instant absence of pain in my neck/shoulder/arms when waking up (that was the first time I realized how much pain I had been living with.. I was so happy I was completely verklempt :-)
    The (minor) problem with fusion surgeries is that the disc below the fusion will receive more tension when you bend your head forward, eg. to read a book. This is exacerbated when you have two discs in a row that are fused. Replacement surgery sounds like a perfect solution - and the recovery time you're reporting is just amazing.
    Replacing the artificial disc after 30-40 years, leaving the metal in place, seems like a much simpler surgery. I don't think you need to be concerned...

      I feel good. All arm numbness issues are resolved
      Shoulder soreness was the toughest thing to deal with postoperatively.
      I was able to eat normal food immediately after the procedure and my surgeon did not give me a neck brace.
      I'm glad I did it. I go back to work Friday...probably could have gone back a week sooner but better safe than sorry.
      No incision pain...no swallowing issues just shoulder soreness.
      By all accounts mine went super smooth. I actually ate turkey mashed potatoes and veggies 3 hrs. After surgery... came home the same day also.
      Surgery started at 1:30pm done by 3:00pm dinner at 5pm ( hospital food) discharged at 8pm

      @@northeastbirdsmore2281 thank you! Very helpful info.
      My spine specialist suggested I try a few more months of physical therapy and traction before deciding on surgery, since my injury was fairly recent (8/28/19). But it's a far lateral herniation, so he said there's a 90% chance I'm surgical. And so far, physical therapy has not helped much.
      I of course would prefer not to have to have surgery, but listening to other people's experiences has definitely made it seem less daunting.

    • @northeastbirdsmore2281
      @northeastbirdsmore2281 5 лет назад

      I had L4 disc herniation surgery in 2011. It also went very well.
      Personally I would not hesitate to get the surgery. I really don't believe physical therapy is going to help put a herniated disc back in.
      I'm not surprised physical therapy hasn't worked. Surgery is a definite way to alleviate abd and remedy the situation.
      Medical advances in this area are huge and fairly minimally invasive.
      Honestly in less than a month you can have all this behind you including the postop recovery.

    Thanks Sonia for making this video, my surgery is next month "April 17 2019". I had 7 surgeries in my life (I'm 54 years old) so I'm ok for the O.R. scene and being put out... my main worries are; being able to swallow and because I'm already on Hrydromorphone that I experienced a few times pain in the recovery room because I'm "immune" to morphine because I've been on opiods for years because of chronic back pain so I do need more than regular patients does, even when I tell them ( they seem to forget lol) & also vocal cords damage and most of all... the DREADED NECK BRACE, I had a bad experience 2 years ago when I got hit by a van... the first thing the firemen did was... yeah put a neck brace on me... by the time I reached the O.R. I was freaking out and even screaming at the nurses to remove the brace because I couldn't breathe... very scary for me. Anyway I'm getting 2 levels done, mine are at C5 C6 & C6 C7... I do have a question for you... how long did it take you to be able to eat and swallow without pain ??? and BTW 50 thousand dollars for surgery ??? I'm so glad I live in Canada Ontario it's all covered here thank God because there's no way we could even pay 1 thousand never 5 or 6 wow!!! that's a lot of money.

    Hello again, pretty lady! Hope this message finds you in great health.
    Well, I just found out I have a large herniated disk in my C4 & 5. I have horrible pain in my neck, shoulder, and wrist. And I can't really feel all of my fingers, minus my pinky...weird huh. Anyways, I haven't been to see a surgeon yet, but thanks for the info on getting a replacement versus a fusion. I'm a retired army veteran and I'm not sure if we get a choice in what surgery the docs do, but I definitely will voice my concern. Thanks again.

    How is your neck now....3 yrs later? Ive been suffering with 2 herniated discs for 3 yrs and Im about ready to give in and get the surgery. It has ruined my life. My doc wanted to do fusion in the beginning but now I think the replacements are more available (and insurance covers them more often).

      I had c6-c7 replacement on November 22nd. I went with Mobi-c. It has been amazing. I woke up and my right arm problems were 95% gone, with just some nerve numbness in my thumb, pointer and middle finger remaining. It is amazing to wake up each day knowing that I will be pain free!! Hope you are doing well.

    I been having neck issues for many many years as a kid at the age of 11 I loved taking jumps on pedal bikes. Until one day I took a jump. Overshot my landing front tire hit the side of a garage I had my head facing downward the seat flung me forward hitting the top of my head dead center i layed there not able to move for 5 10 minutes. Severe pain shot allover my body once I was able to move i walked my bike home in pain. A few days later it was gone. But throughout the years I'd wake up with numbness right arm shoulder and hand. and headaches 2014 I went to a chiropractor for my lower back they did an xray noticed my neck was the worst c4-c7 area I have a bone spur that overlaps c4/c5 area a herniated disc c6 that puts pressure on my cervical spine well. I did 3 sessions the 3rd time I never went back 2015 I slipped on ice backwards which hit the back of my head went to the er. They did an xray said I pulled a muscle next day I went back cause I couldn't move my neck or my arms due to pain. I was diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis I been to 3 different family doctors the first 2 said it will heal and were giving me motrin 800 4x a day which tore up my stomach. Finally I found a doctor that notices my condition and sofar I tried a steroid injection in c-6 nerve root that was painful it took the doc 3x to get to the nerve root the injection lasted 3 days and was back with the same pain. My family dr suggest a spinal fusion. I suffer with adhd so im like active I dont like laying in bed all day long I love working on things or trying new things and sometimes I got to turn my head a certain way spinal fusion from what I've researched eventually its another one and another. Disc replacement is what I want so I have full movement of my head and neck. If its just 1 disk in my neck c6 disc pushing on my neck I'd rather have a disc replacement than a fusion and my dr claims they don't work from all the research I've seen looks to me they do

    Hi thank you so much for sharing the video and answering some key questions. My condition is very much similar to you and have numb fingers and lot of pain in the upper body and right arm. So the key questions I have for you are:
    a) How long before you recovered you strength and got rid of the numbness in your arm and fingers? Did it feel awkward?
    b) As for your incision and the pain and inconvenience caused by it in terms of speech, swallowing and sleeping, if you could shed some light on that. How long it took to heal that and when did you feel comfortable driving etc.
    Thank You.

      6 years ago i had C3,4,5 replaced and i had a headache for about 24 hours. I didn't like wearing the neck collar but i took a month off work because i had a physical job at the time. After about 3 days i felt good. Limited motion of course but slowly got most it back after a few months. I'm 58 now and C6 is next so, if you are young, get it done. Don't put it off if you don't feel well. You'll be glad you did. My doctor here in San Diego is Dr. Allen. He's very confident that my upcoming surgery will help with minimal hospital time. I'm guessing one day stay.

    Thank you for posting this! I have the exact same herniation and researching my options. Trying to give myself a little more time to see if I heal before doing surgery as I have improved (my pain is annoying but not excruciating). But doc mentioned if you wait too long to fix, you could have permanent nerve damage...which would suck, surgery for nothing. Question, what was the period of time that you had your injury... to when you elected to have surgery?

    Hi! How long did you have to take the steroid shots for? I've taking those for the last 3 years or so (about 5 to 6 a year). My doctor says the other option is surgery, which I'm sort of afraid of, but I've been hearing good things about the kind of replacement surgery you had--as opposed to fusion. Were the shots becoming inconvenient for you or just ineffective? Thank you so much for sharing your experience!

    life After 40, I have a herniated disc in my neck. I'm 43 btw. It was caused from somebody punching me in the head 6 years ago and just stress and bad sleep over the years aggravated it and I never knew I had it. I'm not in pain. But do have pinched nerves which are hell. Doctors at least the bums I went to are useless and said it was all in my head. I had to see a chiropractor which made sleeping manageable but I think worse than the pinching in my neck is the psychological Trauma from it. I wouldn't wish this on anyone except maybe the guy who caused it.

    Hi! Good to hear that you have fully recover after your surgery. BTW I also have my disc replacement of C6-C7 last wed 21/9; after the surgery my neck, back pain had gone. However, I'm still suffering from my left hand fingers numbness. My doctor told me that the numbness should gone with pain once the surgery; but now he told me that I have to wait 2 week for the numbness gone. May I ask your experience on the numbness? Are they gone immediately or have sometime to recover? I'm so worry about that because I don't want to have another surgery again. Thx a lot!

    Hi from Nova Scotia, Canada, Sonja! :)). I'm a 49 year old female & after years of suffering, got an MRI & found out that C6 & C7 are in bad shape (osteophytes pressing a bit on the spinal cord, causing numbness in left arm, burning sensations, and I don't know if you got this one-please let me I know-but just recently I feel chest pain, burning on the breast bone...thought it was my heart, but I'm pretty sure it's connected to this issue). There were some mild problems with C5-C6 also, but the biggest thing is the MRI called the C6 & C7 as "severe on the left, moderate on the right". May I ask, can you swallow the same now that you've had surgery & recovered 1.5 years later? (I've noticed ladies saying they couldn't very well but they were early on in their recovery) and can you fully extend your arms above your head & to the sides without shoulder pain or fatigue now? We are moving to Calgary, Alberta and while my wonderful doctor did not at all encourage surgery here in N.S., there are many specialists in Alberta and after seeing your radiant face :)), I just feel encouraged today. It 's been a very rough day on me emotionally as I just got diagnosed with this officially with the MRI, but I've suffered 'restrictions' with physical movement since my late 30's (I had 4 babies in the span of 5 years & I do believe that carrying them around on one hip did not help my spine stay in line). Also, did your hips/lower back and glutes also be affected (i.e. Stiff, sore) from the neck issue? I am trying to figure out if there is a connection to that, as we are one body & one spine. :). God Bless you and thank you today of all days for "listening"...and genuine hugs for this video! :))

      Hello! I had terrible numbness and pain down my right arm, maybe a little chest pain when it went up under my shoulder blade. All good now, I have no problems swallowing, had low back pain, but that was due to letting myself get out of shape and loosing strength in my stomach which gives me back pain. Keep me posted on what you decided to do, I have no regrets! Thank you for your kind words!

      +Erikamartinssf1 Hi Erika, had my surgery 1st August, only spent 2 days in hospital. A bit sore back of the neck but had oxycodone so it wasn't too bad. Trouble sleeping in hospital due to some pain and noise etc. Went home about 48 hours after surgery and felt much better. Still some pain, but the meds dealt with it well. A bit hard to get comfortable in bed first night, I found a pillow under my lower back and neck supported it well. Next night was fine. So about 4 days of discomfort. Ran out of pain meds 2 days ago, and in Australia they won't give you Oxy unless you are dying basically, lol. A little sore last 2 nights in bed and slight pain during the day, but getting better. I have full movement, left to right, a little tender tilting my head back. Found I could drive on day 5 after surgery with no pain. As far as symptoms go, zero improvement so far, my left arm still has numbness, but the surgeon said even though they removed the cause of the problem it can take months for the nerves to heal, so I guess we'll see. Overall, surgery was painful for about 4 days, but not too bad, so I wouldn't worry if I was you, I was terrified the morning of surgery too, but it proved to be all unfounded, so good luck to you!

  • @johnflanagan9153
    @johnflanagan9153 6 лет назад

    Take it from someone who's been there, as this wonderful lady obviously has, and myself; If a doctor tells you that fusion is the only option, first...get up, tell him to pound sand and find someone skilled enough to do ADR(artificial disc replacement). Fusion fails in over 50%(it's true!) of cases, and adjacent disc degeneration is almost guaranteed. If you want your quality of life to improve, find a very skilled(they're out there) Neurosurgeon who's done a few thousand ADR surgeries. It REALLY works, and it lasts for the rest of your life.

      Hello, sorry to hear about your pain and the scar issues. So did you get a replacement or you got a fusion done? Also what sort of disc did you get replaced with? ProDisc or mobi-c or something else? I am scheduled for Aug timeframe, but still wondering..

    Hey,
    Just curious; I’m researching options for a bulging disc where the neurosurgeon is urging surgery for me. But did your disc replacement involve hardware like metal or titanium teeth of some sort? My surgeon said that fusion or disc replacement both involve using hardware, but that disc replacement is just less hardware. Can you confirm if this is true. Thx for any feedback.

      The fusions that are most often done are called ACDF surgery... It does involve metal hardware- bolts, plates, screws, sometimes something called a cage device. Disc replacement involves different materials, and less devices.
