I had this exact surgery done about a year ago and everything she is saying is spot on. I was apprehensive about having it done, but I am so glad I did!
As soon as you wake from surgery you'll immediately notice you'll be pain free.
To be honest, worst part of the surgery was the sore throat afterwards when trying to swallow.
I have since fully recovered with no issues. Having the surgery was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

62 yo. I'm one week post-op ACDF. C4-C7 fused. Three discs excised, replaced with titanium cage with cadaver bone and other materials put in there. Eight screws, three plates. Feel better than expected. Was kept there three nights. Insurance jacked me around for 2 months over allowing me ONE overnight stay! I was draining a lot through the first two nights. My throat is better than anticipated. Coughing, sneezing and clearing my throat hurt, like having a bad cold, how the chest, back and neck hurt. For the first couple of nights in my own bed, my LOWER back hurt badly. I hurt it thirty years ago, but haven't had problems for over a decade.

I had this surgery Jan 27. The worst part was the cramped muscles from the position they put you in for surgery. Also the throat pain. It was harder than I expected. I am on day 5 and still eating cream of wheat and oatmeal. Food gets stuck. I have to wash it down with water and hard swallowing. The incision doesn't hurt. My arm nerve pain is gone. My arms feel the same weight. I still need a little meds but only 2 times a day. I must of done too much today cause It felt fine when I woke up then my arm hurt a four afters after I woke. So I went 9 hrs with out pain meds.

I’m a month out from this surgery. Wish I would have watched this before having it done. I was so nervous to have it done, but it was literally a walk in the park. The sore throat was awful, but the surgery was nothing. I took Tylenol for pain for about 3 days and that was it. The hardest part of the whole thing is learning to relax and not overdo things. My incision is only about 3” long. To hear you say you had staples was the only thing that was different from my surgery. This is a great informative video and everything you said is spot on. Thanks for sharing this!

I'm having this surgery for C5 C6 in a few weeks. Your experiences are helping me a lot. To know more what to expect after the surgery. I've talked to several friends who have had it and they all say I'll be glad I did it. But to see you and hear you a week after yours, helps tremendously! Yes, I have a great surgeon who explained it thoroughly, but it helps so much more . Just the idea of somebody cutting into my neck is scary. He told me he goes in through the front, uses cadaver bone, etc but to see you in a collar, explaining what happened to you during the first week makes it easier to deal with. Thank you.

    Board-Certified orthopedic spine surgeon here.
Great recap! You really knew what you were getting into. I wish my patients did more research and were as knowledgeable about the process as you are. This video goes a long way.
    Couple of comments:
"scars are gnarly and cool" - staples tend to scar more, and I don't know any surgeons who would staple the anterior neck. I saw your scar in a follow-up video and it looks great.
For young, active viewers with a similar problem - discuss the possibility of a cervical disc replacement with your surgeon. I don't know if this was an option for you or not, but it's a better alternative to fusion in many younger patients.

I had my C4-C5-C6-C7 ACDF surgery Thursday morning, (10/20/22), and it went so much better than I could have hoped for. My surgeon was an Orthopedic spine surgeon, and he used all the nerve monitors and safety precautions that you mention, so I'm not convinced you HAVE to use a neurosurgeon. The key is picking the right surgeon based on experience (whether he be an Orthopedic or Neurosurgeon), and do a thorough vetting to make sure they use all the latest safety precautions. My surgeon has performed over 2,000 of these types of surgeries, so I had all the confidence in the world with him. I didn't have to wear a collar, which I'm so thankful for. I'm on my second day of post-op, and most of the pain and tingling which used to radiate down my arm is completely gone. However, my throat is so sore, so I'm using Cepacol extra strength lozenges. I'm also taking two prescription meds (Oxycodone and a muscle relaxant), because I do have pain and stiffness across the back of my shoulders. I know I'm only two days into this, but without a doubt, the throat pain when I swallow is the absolute worst. I'd recommend the lozenges and sucking on crushed ice. Also, soft foods are the way to go until your body learns how to swallow properly again (stuff like mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, grits, scrambled eggs, jello, ice cream, yogurt - you get the idea. Laura, thanks for the great video. You're almost 4 years into yours, so I'm sure you're at 100%. Thanks again.

Since I also had with cervical myelopathy which means spinal cord symptoms i think the fusion was the best way to go.. besides the bulging discs and nerve root impingement there were bone spurs and nerve compression of the spinal cord which caused symptoms in my feet and bladder. .that went away also .

I thought about posting a video about my operation but listening to this it is almost identical to my experiences pre and post op. I had 3 discs replaced last week and the only basic difference is that my consultant did not recommend a neck brace he advocates using the neck muscles straight away in a controlled method, slow to start and leading up to normality after a few weeks. Looking forward to full recovery after another 5 weeks or so.

I just had mine Thursday. C6-7.... 😩😩😂😂😂 the pain/tingling/numbness was instantly gone in my left arm.... I’ll probably regain strength/grip in that hand over time once the nerves fully wake up.... Just stay AHEAD of your pain meds. Don’t wait until you start hurting to take them. Get you a schedule for them and stick to it. I sleep sitting up in bed. I use ice packs faithfully for my shoulders... applesauce and soup have become my best friend, and yogurt! lol.... To me, the sore throat is the worst part. Just rest and be prepared to take it easy for a few days. Good luck! ❤️

Degenerative arthritic changes are causing my diagnoses. I’m inspired by how well you’re doing. My doctors have said that running and doing other vigorous activity is not a good idea for me. It must feel great to be told you can continue doing things as you used to. If you have any ideas on what I can do to at least get some meaningful exercise going, I would welcome your response. My throat still has discomfort when swallowing. Upper chest discomfort. Not overly painful, but still sore. Pain was mostly in my arm and that ceased immediately. I left the hospital with a soft collar. You're right, every doctor varies with the collar. I've seen so many different videos with some wearing one and some not. On the 3rd day, I was walking a mile or more. I was surprised how great I felt so quickly.

I was given medication for muscle spasms. I'm now four months after surgery and still have numbness in my neck as well as pain. I haven't been cleared for Tylenal. For the first few weeks, my voice was scratchy and sore for three weeks. Eating was problematic as food got stuck and I had to drink water immediately. 14 days after ACDF and this is largely my experience as well. My doctor is of the "no collar" school, though he says I can wear a soft collar loosely. I think it is pretty important to wear the soft as a reminder since I am supposed to no look too far down or up yet. It also keeps the aching muscles warm. I wish I had been prescribed a muscle relaxant. Getting off Percocet was key to being able to sleep at all, it gave me weird dreams.

I am 55 and having pain in my neck and shoulder specifically left side. I have been contemplating to go for the surgery. Glad to hear people are generally recovering well albeit with some complications post op.

    • @StarRiderDi
      @StarRiderDi 11 месяцев назад +1

I'm 4 weeks post-op. I went to physical therapy several times. It did nothing. I finally said, "no more." And it's difficult to strengthen your neck muscles, even more so when you're in pain.
I've had a great recovery. I can't tell you when I was pain free because I'm on pain meds for my lower back until I get a pain pump in December, They glued my incision, and the glue comes off as the incision heals and mine was healed when I went to my post-up appt a week later. I still have some swallowing issues and I choke every now and then. I prefer to eat soup but I can eat anything if I take small bites and chew them up real well. My voice is still hoarse and raspy. Sometimes vocal cords get damaged, but they should heal within 3 months. The swallowing issue and the vocal cord damage are part of the list of risks that you sign. All in all I'm very glad I had the surgery. My left shoulder and upper arm were in excruciating pain, and there was numbness and tingling in My lower arm and hand. My arm and hand were also getting weak. That went away before I left the hospital.
